CD format to be abandoned by major labels by the end of 2012. (http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=46980_0_2_0_C)
I'm not complaining. In the last couple of years, I've whittled down a collection of over 500 CDs to about 50. I bought IYD on CD, but other than that, I've been buying mp3s exclusively for a while now. I love having my entire music collection at my immediate disposal and never having to lug CDs around. The bit about magazines doesn't bug me either. Does anyone even still read print magazines?

I hate downloading music. I don't want to lose CDs just to "move with the times". Why do I have to constantly be forced into this cold and decadent "techno future" when I don't want to be? This is bull****...... I'm in a bad mood now...
Edit: I really couldn't give a tut about magazines, though. I haven't read a magazine in years and I don't plan to.

This is pretty much how I feel too. Downloading and playing an album isn't even a shadow of the experience of going to a store, holding the new album in your hands, opening it up, and putting it into your stereo for the first time... while eagerly looking over the album notes and pictures. I find downloading to be dull and even nerve wracking. I had to pay for & download Lindsey's new album twice because something went wrong. I've heard far too many stories of people losing all their mp3s because of iTunes flukes and such. I'll never leave my music collection to the whimsy of electronic equipment. I'm holding onto buying cd's until no more cd's are made. Which unfortunately, will probably be within the next 5-10 years.

I read magazines all the time. I love them. And I love having physical CD's to lend to people to listen to, to listen to in the car, to look at the album booklet, just to physically hold in my hand.
This sucks.

I realise now how people felt when they began to phase out Vinyl and Tapes for CDs. I don't like the idea of having intangible music floating in the ether, where I can't see and feel it. Yeah. That sounds very airy fairy. But maybe you know what I mean. If I have a physical copy, it's a comfort that it's constantly there. I'm not going to one day put my CD into the player and find that the files aren't there any more or its corrupt.

I'm very anal about not playing my original CDs. Every CD in my car is a copy, as well as all in my garage.
Even though I'm talking about vinyl, cassettes and yes, 8 tracks, having to buy 8 copies of Rumours(having worn them all out), trained me to make copies of my CDs, and wear out the copies. MUCH cheaper in the long run!:o

Sort of like how DVDs are going "out of style" now, you can already see it's going to be a space thing like how they're going to stop selling DVD recorders because they want you to go tivo/DVR and I don't want to because that box will fill up then they milk you to buy more space on it. I like burning CDs & DVDs because there's no limits on how many you can have and like some have said above about pride in a collection. When you make friends with someone and tell them you collect music, what do kids now do? Take their friend in to their room and point to a small black box on the other side of the room and say "well, there's my collection"?

What a bunch of luddities.
I got the impression that article was specifically talking about music magazines (Rolling Stone, etc.), not magazines in general. The only time I look at magazines is in a waiting room, and it seems like they're about 60% advertisements, so I won't miss the damn things. I'll just start bringing my Kindle Fire with me everywhere I go.

CD's get SCRATCHED. I don't know about you, but if I spent $16 on it, and really like it, and end up spending $32 on it, I'm pissed. Thank you very much, I'll spend $16 on the original, and 20 CENTS on the copy, and be good to go for life(or however many 20 cent copies I go through).

Get with the times people! I haven't played a CD in ages other than in my car (still got to get an aux jack fitted). CDs are yesterday whether you like it or not. I don't care about holding it in my hand, and it will sure save a few trees and emissions from transport so that is a good thing.
I do not look forward to losing books to e-readers though but I'm sure I'll learn to live with that too.

I totally agree with you. I have over 400 cd's and over 300 albums. Part of the joy of collecting for me is reading the liner notes or the booklets, finding out the specifics of the recording - who, what, where, when, and how. I miss that with downloading.
And, I love magazines too.
I'm totally bummed.

I don't care for MP3's. I mean, when I buy CD's I've got something to look at and listen to. There's always nice booklet, lyrics (which you don't have to search via net), extra pics and stuff like that. Downloading may be useful for me only when I discover new artist and I am not sure if I want to buy his/her album on the CD format. I just love seeing how my CD collection grows with every year. (This year I went a little over the top and bought more than 40 CD's:)). I can't imagine listening my favourite music without reading booklet, looking at the cover art, etc. For me listening to music is a complex and intellectual experience that covers all the aspects of the reception of the art: listening, looking, reading and...thinking. And CD format does that for me.

I'm not sure, but my general impression was that the vinyl market's doing pretty well? That could be a good alternative for music hobbyists... if everything you wanted got a vinyl release anyhow. Probably be a limited run as well.
I'd definitely miss having a physical medium.

Hear hear! This really p***es me off. I like having the artwork, liner notes and something tangible as part of the experience of listening to music. I don't own an ipod. I do have an ipod shuffle but I only very recently got that so I could have music at the gym. and even then I was the last person I know to get one. I have a combined cd/vinyl player and even that's only because I live in a small flat and can't fit a big proper turntable in here!
I still buy cds all the time. In fact I went ona bit of a spree and bought 10 yesterday! Mostly they were for only a few £ each from PlayTrade and amazon marketplace though but I did get a couple of new ones too - new Kelly Clarkson album and Miranda Lambert's new one.
I'll keep buying cd's as long as I can. Even when the format is dicontinued you'll be ale to fill out your music collection with older cd albums from marketplace, ebay etc.

CD's only get scratched if you're careless! I have hundreds of cds, many that I've had for many, many years and they're fine. I just make sure to put them back in the box immediately after playing. They go back in the correct box, with the text facing the way it's supposed to so you can read it. It''s something I'm really anal about. I can't stand to see cds in the wrong boxes or sitting out on the shelf/on top of the stereo when the box is right there! God forbid people leave them shiny side down too... aaarghhh! I'm the same with dvds.
I also just wouldn't have the storage space for duplicating my collection, and since that's one of the reasons people want to get rid of the format (boo!) then you'd best not tell 'them' you do this!

You leave my beer out of this argument!
I'm not careless. For me, it seems like the CD players in vehicles scratch them. BECAUSE, I know that the CD was perfect when I put it in, and VISIBLY scratched, when I took it out.
May I add the bonus of - my vehicle has been broken into twice.
100 $15 CDs= $1500
100 20 cent CDs = $20
^^^I challenge anyone to argue with that point...:p

I was so terribly happy when cassettes gave way to CDs. I have LOVED the way personal computers have advanced since the 1980s. Today's modern cars are technological wonders. Give me a DVD any day over a VHS. And today's cheap audio systems sound worlds better than the high end audio systems of 2 decades ago. I have absolutely no aversion to the advancements of electronics. I just don't like buying an invisible product.
I have the same aversion to eBooks. A huge part of the experience of reading is the book itself (this is why I don't buy paperbacks if I don't have to). The binding of the book, the type of paper used, the dust jacket, and even smell of books... I love it all! You just lose so much of the experience if you take all of that away.

Fair point about having less $ in the car if broken into though.

Louie you're so right. DVDs are far better. The only time I prefer vhs is when I'm teaching (which I haven't for a while) because you can have them all cued up and ready to go to show any clip mid lecture. It's tougher to do that with a dvd because you have to ether sit through all the warnings etc mid-class or, if you have it paused at the start, it my have un-paused by the time you get to the clip - bah!
Good call on e-books too. I have refused to get a kindle because I like to read books! I likely will get one for travelling though, I should have recently. That's what I think about these things. Great for tralling but that's it. It's a shame they've fully replaced, or are beginning to replace, the tangible product.
Because I have a soft case, that holds 100, in one NEAT small "bible".
Oh I can't stand having cd boxes in the car. They clutter the car/glove box up, they get broken, cracked, scratched.. no! Much better to put them in a wallet for the car. ^^Pretty much this. My purchases right now are about 50/50 download/CD. I've been downloading since 2005 and never lost a single song to computer issues.
It is true that iTunes will not replace your files if they are lost - so it's important that you be careful. This should not come as any big surprise, though - no music retailer on Earth is going to replace your records or CDs if you should be careless with them.
Get an external hard drive. Back-up your purchased files. One interesting advancement is Cloud. Amazon offers this for instance - if you purchase music downloads you have the choice of either downloading them or putting them in your Cloud, where you can access them from anywhere on any wireless device.
I do very much enjoy the CD format - but the only gripe I have about the loss of this format is that downloads are just not a complete product in thier currrent incarnation. 256kbps as opposed to 1411kbps is a substantial loss of fidelity whether you can hear it or not. It's safe to assume that advancements in technology will allow for greater quality with smaller files sizes in the future, and many albums are already mastered with MP3 technology in mind so the file compression is almost meaningless in terms of sound impact.
Ultimately I can live with this. Just knowing how many millions of tons of plastic (and thus oil and energy) will be spared is alone enough reason to abandon the CD format. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already considering the astronomical amount of plastic waste the CD format has generated over the past three decades.
I hate downloading music. I don't want to lose CDs just to "move with the times". Why do I have to constantly be forced into this cold and decadent "techno future" when I don't want to be? This is bull****...... I'm in a bad mood now...

Well, while John Cusack's character is more my style, the "personality" pretty much was covered by Jack Black's character. I swear the movie just a remake of my "typical" days back when I worked in record stores...from '73-80.

What about old people who have no idea how to DL music? Like my mom. Poor mom - she won't be able to buy the 57th version of Elvis' Greatest Hits. Seriously, though.

I'm sure there will still be CDs. The article said "major labels". That doesn't mean all labels, and it doesn't mean a complete abandonment of the format. After all, most new music still comes out on a vinyl release, 30 years after records were declared obsolete.
Also: The only CD-formats that will be left over will be the limited edition ones, which will of course not be available for every artist.
This, to me, says that any big-name artist who typically has strong sales is going to continue to see limited CD releases. Stevie? Probably not. Gaga, U2 or Coldplay (and yes, Elvis) will still probably see CD releases in much smaller quantities, along with hundreds of other artists.
For me, the biggest impact here is what will happen to the few remaining *true* music stores. Not Target or Best Buy, but real music stores like the legendary Twist & Shout in Denver.

I don't know about Twist & Shout, but Amoeba Records will probably thrive, at least the used CD media.
CD's disappearing completely will take a long time. They can't even get rid of vinyl. Besides, CD-R's will also continue to thrive.
As for me, I am fine with record companies stopping manufacturing them. They really are ugly things, take up space and perhaps I am getting too old, but the thought of looking at minuscule typeface on a little square page sounds tedious. If I want liner details, I hit the internet.

Truer words than these have seldom been spoken.
Another thought I had last night: Existing CDs will probably go up in value. Already out-of-print and promo CDs will probably skyrocket in price on places like eBay. If existing CDs become one of the last methods of securing lossless digital files, this is pretty much a guarantee.

As far as discontinuing c.d.'s, well, I think we need some tangible form of music no matter what the form. I like album art and it would be a shame to lose that forever.

I will miss my cd's too. My car doesnt have a jack for my mp3 player so I love to have my cd's just for my car. I can burn them once I download a cd but I never have the cases for them or I forget to write on them and then they seem to scratch so much easier. I have heard the FM trasmitter for the ipod doesnt sound that great but does anybody have one?

I hate downloading music. I don't want to lose CDs just to "move with the times". Why do I have to constantly be forced into this cold and decadent "techno future" when I don't want to be? This is bull****...... I'm in a bad mood now...
Edit: I really couldn't give a tut about magazines, though. I haven't read a magazine in years and I don't plan to.
I agree. The same goes for books. I like to have the actual thing instead of something on a Kindle. It just doesn't seem right to me.

I had one for my last car- a Belkin Tunecast, I think. The sound wasn't terrible- perhaps a smidge better than a standard FM broadcast. The most annoying aspect of it, however, was trying to find a clear bandwidth on the FM dial, which is no easy feat near a large city. And when you are driving long distances, you will have to constantly change the transmitting station to a clear frequency.
BTW, I still have my transmitter- it's yours if you want it.

Im very VERY fussy now with buying the most original of CD album possible, those with the black and dirty cases. Those to me are special and really make a CD more enjoyable, so much that if a reissue has extras on but is the shiny cases, i wont usually buy it, but keep looking out for the originals.
Yes it has something to do with being lucky and half a dozen 1st pressing cd's i have being worth quite a lot money, but its adds character and age to it! I do download MP3's all the time and enjoy them, but i will go out my way to buy the CD second hand, and no i dont like buying new CD's for the reasons above- so buying second hand isnt as such paying the band unfortuantly, but if they made them all old and crap and sold them as new, id be giving them a fortune !!
and now to say how much i prefer VHS Video tapes over DVD's.... but that will bore the hell out of everyone.......
Crazy young adult(19;)) not getting with the times... pfft.... long live the days i never can appreciate for real :(

A lot of albums on iTunes come with artwork, lyrics and even extras that might not be in the CD booklet. The format is Adobe PDF. It's not the same...I know, but it's nice nonetheless.

This has been my experience, too, even in a much smaller city.
