From Nickslive, here are Stevie's Grammy Submissions for this year's awards. Nominations will be announced in early December:

Stevie Nicks | Lindsey Buckingham and the Grammy Possibilities

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham
Two amazing artists putting out arguably their best solo material
Could a Grammy be next?

2011 has been an incredible year for both Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Within the span of 5 months both have put out critically and to a certain extent commercially successful albums. They have both toured North America this spring, summer and fall and continue to tour with upcoming shows booked in the UK and Australia. They have surrounded themselves with incredible musicians backing them up in the studio and on the road which resulted in two stellar albums, cool videos and really amazing interesting live performances in some great historic venues! It goes without saying that each has had an amazing run as a solo artists over the years, not to mention being members of Fleetwood Mac, so to see this level of artistic achievement from them at this stage in their careers is just mind blowing... And both show no signs of stopping now! In fact it almost feels like they are just getting started! They continue to roll on with Lindsey releasing a live DVD/CD package out Oct 31st in the UK & November 1st in North America and Stevie is reportedly prepping her "Making of" In Your Dreams documentary. It's also been an incredible year for fans on both sides of the fence so any Grammy nominations on top of all this would just be icing on the cake!

I'm really excited for both of them and wish them both the best of luck as the list of artists and their submissions is fairly lengthy with a lot of really great performers this year hoping to grab a nomination.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Here's a list of submissions for Grammy consideration for both Lindsey and Stevie. Actual nominations are announced at some point in December with awards given out early next year.

Stevie and her team have submitted two songs in 5 categories. "Secret Love" for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video categories. They have also submitted "Soldiers Angel" in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories. Stevie's album "In Your Dreams" was also placed in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year categories. Lindsey Buckingham and his team have submitted his album "Seeds We Sow" in for consideration in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year categories with the lead single "In Our Own Time" being submitted to the Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year categories. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH!!

Oh, I think she stands a good chance at a nomination. Best rock song or rock performance, most likely. She's a grande dame of the industry now, and that earns some votes (though probably not enough for a win).

Secret Love's a nice tune, but I don't really think it's "Song of the Year" material.

I don't understand. Stevie's team submits for Grammy consideration? In any case, I think she could win a grammy from this record. Not sure I agree with the choices above. I do think In Your Dreams is good enough to be Album of the Year but that won't happen. I think she gets best female vocal maybe if for Moonlight. And I quite frankly if there was a song for record or song of the year, I think For What It's Worth is a better selection than Secret Love.

I really like Solider's Angel but don't see that as best rock performance. Very odd. Again, her best work and she deserves to win a grammy but I don't think the above choices were the best ones.

By the way - I rarely see grammy awards go to truly the best so maybe better that she not win.

Well IMO, Stevie has a real great chance of receiving The Best Rock Performance, with that Epic Soldiers Angel performance at Buffalo Sturgis gig.. with the crazy wind which almost blew her & the band off stage..Now that's true dedication, kept her focus throughout the whole performance. I would love to know what was going through her mind at the time. Amazing!!!!

I also think if that Moonlight "A Vampires Dream" was released as Stevies 2nd single, she would of stood a chance in the Song Of The Year ( songwriter award ) Nominations.

Except for Street Angel and TOSOTM...she always gets a Grammy nod. TILL had several nominations as Album of the year...Planets Of The Universe was best song nod...

Maybe she will even get a lifetime achievement Grammy!

She did get a Grammy nomination for TOSOTM: Best Female Rock Vocal, "Whole Lotta Trouble."

Record companies and individuals submit recording to the Grammy nomination committee for consideration and to assess eligibility, etc.

This year, the Grammy org has reduced the number of categories from 109 to 78, and it has eliminated male/female category distinctions. So Best Male Rock Vocal and Best Female Rock Vocal is now one category: Best Rock Vocal. They've done the same with every genre. Best rock instrumental recording was eliminated.

These are the awards for the entire Rock category:
Rock Field

Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance
Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance
Grammy Award for Best Rock Song
Grammy Award for Best Rock Album

Stevie has good shot at a nomination or two in this category because this year she's met all the criteria the Grammy committee responds to, including her recent Grammy museum appearance/student lecture. They'll also want both sexes represented in the Rock Field or risk criticism. (However, Lady Gaga will probably take the nomination for her big rock hit "You and I," which features Queen's Brian May on guitar. Lindsey won't receive any nominations in the rock category. The nomination process filters out artists and albums with what it considers "insufficient sales" (i.e. less than 50,ooo units).

But, it's Adele's year. Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Pop Vocal Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal will all go to her. With 4 million in U.S. sales, 21 is 2011's biggest seller. That's twice as many albums the #2 best-seller, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"1.9 mill. Adele also has two #1 singles, Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You, and she just might find herself nominated twice for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Someone Like You just moved back to #1 this week.

I don't care if Stevie is nominated or not. I rather see the organization demand that Beyonce return her undeserved Grammy for Song of the Year (which goes to the songwriter) since she didn't write it (or any of the other songs she falsely claimed to have written. NeYo, Rob Fusari, and a number of "collaborators" have called her out for it. The Oscar committee stripped her of a nomination when it discovered she had not contributed either music or lyrics to "Listen." Interestingly, Stevie is still unaware that Beyonce's father scripted her story of how she was inspired to write Bootylicious after hearing Edge while on a plane, etc..All scripted lies, as detailed in a two page interview with hitmaker Rob Fusari in Billboard.

I'm not sure but didn't Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers release new albums this year? I think they have pretty good chances of winning album of the year if I've got my facts right.

I really wish they'd put Moonlight forward for a nomination, IMO it's the best song from the record.

A lifetime achievement thing would be cool, I'd love to see her win anything tbh, she obviously deserves recognition for her work.

The only one Stevie has any chance at is Best Pop Vocal Album. Since that's not one which carries a lot of notoriety and prestige, she just might be able to get away with winning it. Though like others have mentioned, I can definitely foresee an Adele clean sweep this year. But just as 1977 was Stevie & Fleetwood Mac's time in the sun, so is 2011 for Adele. :)

I agree Stevie's chances of a win are very slight. I'd be amazed if she wasn't nominated in two or three categories, though.

Edit: I initially couldn't fathom the choice of Secret Love for the songwriting award, but now I've realised it's because she can't submit anything with a co-credit, isn't it? That does rather leave the field a bit more sparse, and SL probably not a bad choice. It has no chance of winning, though. :(

...but strangely enough, the "geniuses" in Stevie's camp did not submit IYD for best rock album. You really have to wonder what drugs these people are taking. Or maybe they know something the rest of us don't know... After all, there have been some oddball album of the year Grammys given out over the years: Turbulent Indigo by Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters by Herbie Hancock, Two Against Nature by Steely Dan, etc. From what I can recall, none of these albums exactly blew the minds of the critics when they came out (although Turbulent Indigo did garner some glowing raves). I do believe that IYD absolutely deserves to be acknowledged with a Grammy, but the whole marketing of the album just seemed so reticent and tentative. Instead of assaulting the airwaves with the A-list "hit" songs from the album right from the get-go in rapid succession, they just kind of allowed it to plod along while releasing radio-unfriendly songs to radio without accompanying videos and spacing the releases too far apart. It would be a miracle if even half of the voting Grammy Academy knew Stevie had released an album.

I definitely think that the FWIW video should have been presented rather than Secret Love.

However, I think Song of the Year is awarded to the composer, which for FWIW, would have been Mike Campbell, at least to my understanding. I'm not sure if Stevie would get anything for having written the lyrics.... I might be wrong.

ETA: And all this just reminds me of when Kathy Griffin & Bette Midler called Stevie because she thought she was a member of the Academy, haha.

I agree. Soldiers Angel is her best shot at receiving a Grammy in this (rock) category. BUT if nominated she'll also up against males & bands in the rock category, since the Grammy's eliminated best "female" rock performance and lumped them all together. It would be nice to see IYD at least earn a nomination for album of the year, but no way would she win that. Adele is going to sweep. And Stevie has not got a chance in the pop categories imo.
Soldier's Angel is her best bet!

Thank you!

On another note, I love what Stevie has put forth, but I don't think she's gonna get much out of it. Maybe for the album but not for Secret Love or Soldier's Angel. A nomination would be really great though!

I think she deserves at least one nomination for the Album of the Year. "In Your Dreams" is such a wonderful album and should be praised by academy. Stevie is a legend and the only thing she lacks is of course Grammy Award on her shelf. I don't think that "Secret Love" will get any nomination (yet still I cross my fingers for its success). I wonder why they didn't submit "For What It's Worth"...great song, great video...

I'd like to have seen Anabel Lee submitted. It's a great song, and it would be great to see Edgar and Stevie going up to the stage together to accept an award. He hasn't gotten any awards in a LONG time.

If "For What it's Worth" were nominated, Stevie and Mike Campbell would share the nomination. Lyrics and music are held in equal esteem as both are "composed." Unfortunately, anyone listed on a song's publishing credits - regardless of how much they actually contributed to the writing of the song - shares the nomination with all those listed. (Billboard Magazine recently detailed the disturbing practice of major entertainers demanding a piece of the publishing/songwriting credit for monetary purposes and to build their credibility as "artist.")

I'm not sure but didn't Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers release new albums this year?

Red Hot Chilli Peppers album has suffered from disastrous PR since it was the first album specially mastered to optimize digital sound quality for iTunes Store and the general consensus was that the album was overly compressed and distorted on CD and mp4. Coldplay's album was released in October, so it missed the qualifying period. And the plagiarism scandal with the first single release may have hurt its chances for a nomination. (Chris Martin says he was inspired to write it after hearing a song in a club, not realizing that the song he was ripping off was built off of a huge chunk of "I Go to Rio," so the composers of that song were added to the album credits after an avalanche of criticism including feature stories about the band's history of song theft. Coldplay settled with Joe Satriani out of court after they ripped off one of his songs for the Grammy winning Viva La Vida.
Warner should have gone for Best Rock album, even though all the sub genre which used to have their own categories, have been merged into this one.

Stevie has a real great chance of receiving The Best Rock Performance.

Grammy Awards only recognize recorded performances that have been commercially released. That amazing performance, which requires the visual to really impact, would have to be issued as part of compilation or live album or track in order to qualify.

Also, all of the MALE and FEMALE vocal categories have been merged. No more Male Pop Vocal and Female Pop Vocal, just Best Pop Vocal, Best Rock Vocal, etc.

Why do people put down other genres of music in order to lift up their favs?

I don't know - it's annoying - like the people who say "music isn't good anymore" or "all new music sucks". Sorry folks, Pink Floyd can't record forever.

It's just lack of exposure to decent material; it leads some people to believe that there really must be no good new music, or that all R&B/Rap/Hip-hop sucks, which simply is not true.

What is true is that there is a severe lack of decent radio stations, and decent DJs who know how to enthrall an audience - or who even have the freedom to do so, anymore.

Corporate radio with label incentives is the true downfall of the music industry. Not internet piracy. People cannot buy what they do not know exists. DJs used to introduce us to new artists, new tracks - they used to play deep album cuts - they used to play b-sides.

On topic, there's no way Secret Love is winning anything Grammy related, except possibly for the video because it was well done and visually stimulating. I do however hold out hope that In Your Dreams could win overall as an album.

Regarding Coldplay, I don't believe Chris Martin would rip off anyone intentionally. The man is simply too good hearted and genuinely honest to do something mean spirited - and besides - they are so huge worldwide there's no way it could be done without someone catching on. What I do believe is that his cushy marriage to the beautiful Gwennyth Paltrow has totally destroyed his muse and ruined his ability to write lyrics with any substance or depth. Boredom leads to finding inspiration in the creations of others instead of finding creativity inside of yourself.

I can't find the quote to quote this and I don't mean to be snotty but reading that just made me crack up for some reason. I mean really? As much as I would love for that to happen in all likely-hood it will not for many of the reasons people have stated, namely the lack of big commercial success but then again there have been exceptions to this in the past.

Corporate radio with label incentives is the true downfall of the music industry

This is 100% accurate. Instead of diverse playlists with all kinds of artists, Top 40, AC, AAC, etc. have blurred together and they all play the same 40 songs from the same 20 brands, not one of which is over 4o years old (except for the odd 41 year old that sneaks in with songwriting/production chores by of-the-moment studio hit-makers, like Max Martin, etc.

I don't agree entirely that nominations are based a lot on commercial success. Why then would there be a list of of 290 submissions for Best Rock Performance? Looking at the list, there is some really obscure artists on there with music I've never even heard of. If a chunk of the criteria was based on commercial success and an artist knows ahead of time the track wasn't all that successful, why go through the bother of submitting it for consideration.

my guess if she gets a nomination it would be for best rock/pop vocal female and producer of the year dave stewart for In Your Dreams. I would only guess about 2 nominations for the grammys and hope she wins one but not holding my breathe on it. I don't think Stevie records an record and thinking I am going to get a ton of grammy's but in recent interviews and she has multiple trophys she gets more grammy's every time I read an interview or see an interview clip the last one i saw was she won 23 grammy's?

I totally agree that there are stronger songs than Secret Love from IYD that could have been submitted, but I have a hunch that, as much respect and honour as Stevie has for her co-writers, there's a part of her originating ambition or legacy-ego-whatever that just can't countenance being nominated for (never mind winning!) a songwriting Grammy and having to endlessly reference that it's for a song she didn't write all by herself.

There is also the fact that she has said over and over that Soldier's Angel is her most (self-) revered song, and, as much as we're all used to her hyperbole around here, maybe she really means it? Maybe the thought of NOT submitting Soldier's Angel never crossed her mind?

You should all go back in time when Secret Love was released as a single. All of you raved about what a great song it was and bla bla bla. Me and a small handful of other Ledgies said it wasn't anything special and now all of us agree that it is not Grammy nominated worthy.

^^^ I don't see your logic here. Secret Love can and was rated on several different criteria. Is it a good 'Stevie' song? How does it fare in the context of the album? Is it Grammy-worthy? The answer to those can be 'Yes!', 'Average' and 'Hell, no', without a shred of inconsistency.

This doesn't really relate to anything in the discussion except for this statement, and it's not even directed at any one person or group here, but the thing that kind of irks me is when people say there's no good music anymore yet they wouldn't dare venture off the well worn and beaten path of top 40 radio. As much as internet piracy has caused major structural damage to the music industry machine the availability of music and recording software have made home recording such an easy thing that many artists can put their own recordings online, sell CD's, have downloads from their websites and all sorts of avenues to get their music heard. There are thousands of blogs that promote every genre of music out there from the biggest names to the person who just writes songs simply because they love to record. How many of you will listen to a scratchy Stevie demo that's sounds like it's been dubbed from cassette to cassette about a dozen times before being committed to digital yet wouldn't consider listening to recording from a new talented artist just because he recorded his songs in his basement. I'm not condemning anyone for this, just sort of pointing out that there is amazing music just beyond itunes and the radio dial. And the best part is many music blogs that feature new artists will have sample mp3's and youtube videos so you can check these guys out before you buy. :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly! I *love* discovering new bands, and even old bands that I'm not familiar with. I'd say that nearly 50% of my music collection is stuff that iTunes recommended to me in the past 5 years, mostly new artists from the same time period, and almost everytime I've been amazed at how good it is in detecting my tastes - and equally amazed that I still listen to music very few others ever bother with even though it was an iTunes promoted band/artist/album.

I also will buy the album playing in my local record store when I go in if I like the mood/vocals. That's how I discovered Neko Case. And Art Brut as well, though I don't usually publically admit to loving his music!

Although I do see the benefit of music being more DIY these days, I have to admit that there is so much putrid garbage out there. Discovering interesting music really is like finding a needle in a haystack. And it's great if you have time to sift through multiple sources to discover the next great thing. But for the rest of us, being spoonfed new music (via mainstream media like radio) is the only practicable way to discover new music whilst having some semblance of a life.

One unexpectedly good source for new music that I have discovered is the Palladia channel. In between programs they usually play 2 or 3 music videos to fill the void, and usually they play pretty interesting stuff. That's where I first heard/saw La Roue's "Bulletproof," which is one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure singles.

Palladia is great! LoGo's PopLab has been a good source of new tunes for me as well as NewNowNext.

Sometimes I just dive right in and buy all sorts of odd stuff. I was sure that The Bravery were going to be a favorite band of mine after sampling one song on iTunes. Meh.. not so much after buying the whole album. Win some / Lose some.

I'm putting big money down on Soldier's Angel getting a nomination for Best Rock Song, and I even think it could have a decent shot at taking home the award. The category is about composition. It's a perfect chance to give an aging legend an award, show a military friendly face, and even include Lindsey in the show. Seriously, anyone want to take my bet?

That's funny, these shows you mention esp. the bolded ones, are where my brother discovers new artists all the time. I honestly don't know anyone who buys more cd's & new artists than my dear older brother. More often than not, he usually turns me onto newer stuff/artists, cause I generally don't have the time to sift through Itunes recommendations etc. Most often I have found that the artist's that they recommend are just sound alike/copycat's of artists I love and adore already...fine tuned marketing. Itunes & now Facehook, be careful what you "like".

You should all go back in time when Secret Love was released as a single. All of you raved about what a great song it was and bla bla bla. Me and a small handful of other Ledgies said it wasn't anything special and now all of us agree that it is not Grammy nominated worthy.

I still surmise that "Secret Love was Stevie's finest single since ROF (cept' for perhaps POTU - which was just sent to AOR radio as a promo single & rarely played beyond clubs & the #1 dance charts success that version enjoyed)

It's just that the clamor died down significantly once most heard the entire IYD recording. The whole record glistened & overflowed with could be singles (Moonlight, IYD, FWIW, Annabel Lee, New Orleans, Everybody Love You, etc.), much less the 1st coveted single choice .However SL did achieve top 20 AC chart status & received significantly more radio spins than FWIW. I heard it played here in Denver on KBCO pretty frequently in March through May. So its pretty obvious as to why "they" chose to submit SL for nomination in certain categories.

Sometimes, yes, this is totally the case. But I don't think it matters, ultimately. Let me use the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as an example. Critics around the world have noticed that the band has a sound - and even a vocalist - remarkably similar to Siouxsie and the Banshees circa 1988-1992. While it would be easy to pass them off as a copycat or sound-alike band, the fact remains that they've had great commercial success with a fan base who has likely never even heard of Siouxsie.

Lets talk Gaga for a moment. As a guy who grew up listening to Madonna from her first single "Everybody" when I was 10 years old all the way to the present... I have to say there are Gaga songs/videos/fashion statements that seem to me to be a complete and total ripoff. At the same time, it''s hard to deny that Gaga has become a worldwide sensation by providing a product that people were craving and clearly not getting enough of. If Madonna were filling that role, Gaga would never have stood a chance.

(speaking of which, I've heard the new Madonna album will feature Nicki Minaj which is enough to make me run screaming)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's inevitable that a band or singer will sound like some other band or singer somewhere else in space or time. This doesn't diminish their viability or creativity in any way and it certainly doesn't take away from the original or make it 'lesser'. If anything, it elevates the originals to a place of homage and tribute. Music, like fashion, comes in cycles that repeat. Never quite the same, but with obvious likenesses paying respects to an earlier era.

I am rambling. I could talk music all day.

Another part of me thinks she's better off not being nominated and rising above the fray like she always does. With the current nominees that I saw tonight, not being nominated makes her stand out more positively it seems.

Let's see, Kanye West, Lady Gag, Rihanna, and Cat Perry on the list

Reading more about the Grammys I discovered that they had over 17,500 submissions this year, so that's pretty daunting. Also, the number of catagories shrunk dramatically, dropping from 109 last year to 78 this year. They also consoldated 52 of them into 21. This obviously made it a LOT harder to get in this year versus years previous. Obviously she would have had a much better chance if she could've gotten IYD out last year, but coulda, shoulda, woulda, right?

If you give awards any validity at all, then you have to go with what they choose. Stevie's music didn't just get worse because they didn't nominate it, just as those other people's music didn't get any better. Would Stevie have found it pleasant to get a nomination? Probably. But beyond that, I hope she shrugs it off and - as others have said - gets back in the studio and keeps on doing what matters: making new music for me!

I was hoping Stevie would get a nomination or two too for her In Your Dreams, I heard I think this year they changed the awards and took out a few catagories. They should but in classic rock performance by a female or male catagory. Grammy's want to go to the younger crowd. Stevie doesn't need a grammy anyway she has us that love the new album and anything she does. The Grammy Awards are not like they used to be they used to boost your album sales alot back in the day. Stevie will tour next year with the album and probably release a few songs with videos.

I recommend a music gender change to have Stevie get notice at the Grammys.I've been saying that for years.Rock tunes are dead now especially from older performers Like Stevie and others that we love.Stevie is old enough to be some of these young artists granny.Sorry Stevie. She's got keep to the current beat. She's got to make a change to keep up with the Lady Gaga'a,Adele's,Katy's and Taylor's.She probably got to start Rappin' Hip Hoppin' Or get on the high horse and belt some country tunes out .or sing with Katy Perry or somebody that is current. At lease Stevie will get a nod for a collaboration Grammy award. Now I feel like my parents when they were watching the Grammys back in 1978 when Fleetwood Mac was hot. They were saying the same thing as us.wheres Perry Como,Benny Goodman,Dean Martin,Sammy Davis Jr or Frank Sinatra. In the meantime WB records is not helping with any promotion.

I am actually very surprised by this development- I really thought this was Stevie's turn in the sun. After all, she's the most nominated female artist to never receive a Grammy. Stevie's received the most positive reviews of her career for IYD, but sales have not reflected that. Low sales plus good reviews are usually the perfect formula for an underdog Grammy win.

Oh well, I don't put that much stock into the Grammys anyway. The most absurd people sweep the awards every year, while some of the most talented artists out there will never receive a nomination.

As much as I feel that FWIW should have absolutely been submitted over Secret Love, Stevie's chances of being nominated were bleak, being that she didn't work with a "hot and in demand" artist to produce and record the album. TISL was star-studded and although POTU didn't have any special contributors, the fact that the album had so many big names attached to it helped to move it along in that regard. As talented as Dave Stewart is, he's not the kind of producer who is capable of pushing Stevie to that recognition level.

I see your point, but I think she would have at least eeked out one nomination, maybe for vocal performance, if she had submitted something else (FWIW is a good example.) I LOVE Soldier's Amgel, but her voice is pretty nasally & I wouldn't say it's her best vocal performance on the album.

Stevie Nicks has been on the road most of her life. She endlessly tours. She claims that the business people said, "don't make a record...they'll steal it" which kind of sounds like Illuminati...or conspiracy theories. haha

Seriously, her endless demos to full completions of unreleased songs and studio sessions and just her and a tape recorder... stretching from Fritz in the late 60s until today with a ton of stuff that keeps surfacing.

I think, she is totally dedicated to her loyal fans...and she is so excited to have a solo album that she digs. I have a hunch, as I've said before...Stevie must have invested into this project. Its seems weird for record execs and management to tell her...don't work...its a waste...to today, in the hardest of times for many Americans...financially and at each others throats and bullets over political affiliation, war and sexuality.

Yes, this. There are so many great singers and songwriters out there, and Stevie feels compelled to bark up the trees of the ones who need 78 writers to churn out an album.

However.....and I don't even like saying this.... Stevie likes what she likes, and apparently that's Rhianna and Katy Perry. Art is subjective and totally a matter of opinion for everyone - there are no "facts" about what is good or not good when it comes to art, especially music.

At least, she isn't doing the Bonnie Raitt thing... which was basically sucking up to the old-timers. Yes, it got Bonnie some grammy's but her grammy's always fealt dubios to me. Nicks of Time is not anywhere as good Bella Donna, but Bonnie had the better the story and made some clever moves.

Stevie has made a ton of mistakes in her career. She is trying to play it really smart. Who can blame her?

And...I actually like a lot of Rhianna's songs and vocals. :D

Stevie only needed one writer to churn out IYD...

But she praises Rihanna and the like who have tons of different writers on their albums.

Why are some people suggesting that Stevie "go country" or start rapping just so she can get a Grammy award? I'm sorry, but I'd lose a tremendous amount of respect for her if she did that. Her constant shilling for Katy Perry and Rihanna already irritates me.

So if you record a country album, then you get a Grammy? It's that easy?

A lot of Stevie's music has country influences; she wouldn't be selling out if she put out an album that had predominent country leanings. It would essentially be country rock, which is a style she's been mining throughout her entire career.

I am equally irritated by her shilling for Katy Perry and Rihanna. Aside from my personal ambivilance about them, I don't see the musical connection between them and Stevie. Is she just pandering to them because they represent the popular youth market? They are so contrived and lightweight in comparison to her.

I would think she'd be referencing more (current) classic rock and roll artists -- but not sure who that would be. At least Lindsey is speaking about respectable new bands -- artists which I can clearly see why they caught his interest.

The connection is that they are successful female artists. Stevie basically said it herself in a recent interview.

But the contradiction resides in the fact that Stevie has previously chided Britney Spears (and other female singers) for being too sexualized and wearing too little clothing. Clearly Katy Perry and Rhianna are not exactly keeping their "assets" under wraps, so why is she not being critical of them as well? I dunno... but I do suspect that her people are probably telling her to stop being such a curmudgeon when it comes to talking to the media. One can appreciate music on a strictly musical level, even if you don't necessarily care for their (lack of) clothing or conduct.

Yes, but if I recall correctly (and I might not be), she was saying those things about Britney when Britney was going through all of her problems and stuff, and just like the LiLo situation, Stevie shows some very tough love for people struggling with drugs and various other vices in the public eye. I believe she even said something along the lines of Britney needing to write her own songs instead of showing off her body and whatnot.. I think that is the main difference, because Britney doesn't write her own material in the same sense that Katy could be considered a songwriter (despite her co-writers) .

Now, with that said, I don't understand her love for Rihanna at all because much like Britney (whom I happen to personally love, for nostalgia's sake), Rihanna doesn't write her own material or even sing/perform very well live - but to each their own.

On the other hand, Katy may not be the best or most respectable, but she is at least marginally talented, if you've ever seen any of her acoustic stuff. I can get behind Stevie vouching for Katy.

I don't know. I don't particularly enjoy or go out of my way to listen to pop music despite being in it's target demographic, but this is very obviously something Stevie has always done and the type of music she enjoys. Just because someone likes one pop artist and not the other doesn't make them hypocritical, for instance, I love Britney but hate Gaga... just like I don't have to love The Eagles just because they're contemporaries of Fleetwood Mac... it's just personal preference, which Stevie is entitled to. If Stevie loves Rihanna and Katy Perry, good for her for embracing mainstream music today if it's something she enjoys. It's all subjective. I don't see why it's such a big deal.

yes - kick them while they are down and struggling. how exemplary. :distress:

and praise people who are already doing well and don't need your support anyway.:p

although, did anybody notice that Katy Perry received only 1 grammy nomination while having 5 number 1 songs from her latest album? if that's correct, seems like a snub to me...

I thought it was completely ridiculous that Katy didn't get nominated for Best Pop Album or Album of the Year, considering the success her album has had.. and yet, Gaga got nominated for Born This Way which has been kind of a flop in comparison to Katy for sure, and was not nearly as strong as her previous material, imo.

my understanding is that Adele had #1 selling album last year, Gaga had #2, with everybody else's album sales far behind. however Katy had the most #1 singles, and she received a nomination for just one of the singles, no album, record, etc

EDIT: Gaga didn't get too many noms either, btw - not sure, but possibly just 2.

Right, but I'm not really talking sales... In terms of quality, Katy's album was consistently better than Gaga's, as evidenced by the plethora of singles she released from it doing so well. Gaga's album sold based on hype and not actual quality, for the most part (like lots of big acts - this is not something specific to her in particular obviously).

Katy Perry's album doesn't qualify for anything album related, since the album has been out so long, and was nominated last year.

Now I'm wondering why Stevie never got a number 1 hit in her solo works. It's to bad the corrupt industry does not recognize her with her talent.Todays sale of music especially Itunes,Amazon downloads which to me are useless without a physical hardcopy of a cd should not be counted as a unit. It looks like this will be the new trend of buying music and I dont dig it.If the hard drive crashes .goodbye tunes .

Well Fleetwood Mac only got one #1, so its probably not surprising that Stevie never hit the peak. She came sort of close with "Stop Dragging My Heart Around", in that that song stayed in the top 5 for quite awhile.

Re: Lady Gaga. Actually Born This Way has had four top 10 singles just like The Fame did. "Born This Way" was the only #1 (compared to "Just Dance" and "Poker Face") but was at #1 longer than either of those two songs. If "Marry The Night" goes top 10 it will pass The Fame.

I like all three Lady Gaga releases, though my favorite is actually The Fame Monster. Even though it's technically an EP there were enough songs there that I consider to be essentially a second album.

Re: Katy Perry. Five number 1 singles from an album is quite an accomplishment, no matter what the Grammy noms are.

I was sifting through this thread and I have to say that I am shocked so many people feel so negatively about current music because current music isn't just of the 'Katy Perry/Rihanna/Gaga' ilk. No, not even of the Coldplay or . I love the person who expressed themselves about indie artists. I'm a massive fan of so many artists who write and create music outside of the box (charts) platform. For example, the following artists released [i]amazing, critically-acclaimed albums this year:

PJ Harvey, Let England Shake
M83, Hurry Up ,We're Dreaming
Bon Iver, Bon Iver
The Black Keys, El Camino
James Blake, James Blake
Florence + the Machine, Ceremonials
St. Vincent, Strange Mercy

Recall last year that it was Arcade Fire and not some huge, well-known top 40 act that took home Album of the Year. It's about time people looked past charts and popularity and looked for originality, creativity, and quality. The above albums are only a handful- and of course I personally would say Adele's is beautiful, I deeply enjoyed Jay Z & Kanye's, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, The Roots, and a ton of others (not naming FM members). But you know, I think *some* people seem to categorize all music that isn't their favorite artist's, who is a legitimate member of a superstar band of the 70s for example, as "crap" and that is far from true. There is SO much great music happening. I am loving the indie resurgence and the love that is shining on those artists who make music first and foremost without a care about fame or numbers. To be honest, I think PJ Harvey's album is the greatest of the year. I'm not alone in thinking that, and you can check her out on TONS of 'best of 2011' lists. But will she win? Probably Adele. Still, like you, I'd love the nom but it is inconsequential to her brilliance for me.

Yeah, but what was great about the 60s/70s/80s was that it seems you didn't have to look- it was all right before your ears. Now what is popular is not necessarily a representation of the best quality of music being made.

That's not just exclusive to right now.

All eras of music throughout the decades had very popular chart-topping, award-winning music that has not withstood the test of time. A lot of it is rightfully forgotten. However, every era leaves behind a legacy of timeless classsics. History lets that play out.
