View Full Version : Prominent Lori vocals?

It seems to me that on most of Stevie's songs, I can very, very easily hear Sharon's vocals standing out (maybe that's just because she sings the higher part), but I can't think of any time that Lori's part stands out (obviously the "Nightbird" Solid Gold clip is the exception).
Does anyone have any examples of Lori's vocals standing out?
The only part that I think maybe could be Lori is in "You May Be the One," on the "flying across the ocean" line. It sounds like it could be her, but I also sometimes listen and think it's Sharon. WHO IS SINGING THAT PART??

Are you being sarcastic, or did you not read my post? I'm hoping its the former.

I honestly think Sharon is the stronger of the two vocalists... which is why you never hear Lori. ;) Just a guess...
As far as "You May Be the One"... it sounds like two voices there, it might be Sharon and Lori.

I'm thinking after all these years they've been fine and content just standing in the shadows and being background vocalists for Stevie. You have to want it bad enough to get out front and do what Stevie's always done as a solo artist and with Mac.

I don't know how to explain this but I did not see that part you wrote about Solid Gold when I first read this. How strange. Strange indeed. I agree with you though. It is hard to hear Lori. What about the video version of Doing The Best I Can. Can you hear Lori clearly there?

I mean, I can hear her on things like that...I just mean in studio recordings, it sounds like thye always showcase Sharon...or she's the only one I can pinpoint...I can't tell which. I can point to numerous songs where Sharon is featured, but not one where Lori is featured or stands out.

What were they supposed to do? Piss her off to the point where she would fire them?

not particularly prominent, but you can certainly hear her vocals clearly:

I think that's a fair enough comment from an outside perspective but surely addiction is almost always a gradual process, which is what makes it so dangerous. If people just rocked up at breakfast one morning looking like that, everyone would go 'Whoa, what happened to you!' But it takes years, and when you're close with someone, you don't always see the tipping point so clearly. Like when your lover gains weight or loses their hair, it happens slowly and you still love them even though other people meeting you both for the first time might wonder why you're with them.

I'm sure they DID see it....but what they did DO about it is something else..... I think the answer is right there in the beginning of the video clip, where in the interview she says she's sick and tired of people giving her their opinions of her life and how she's living it and basically the song is her telling people to either "give me a break or get off my back" and "let me live my life and make my own decisions". I think they were well aware that she was not open to inputs from anyone else at that point and would have to reach her own conclusions.... like watching an impending car crash, but they weren't at the wheel.....

And I think Sharon and Lori might have been going through some crazy things in their own lives. Not necessarily substance abuse, but relationship issues that probably didn't make them the best rescuer for anyone.

I do agree. If they did went on their own.Stevie would be afraid to lose them.I dont want that to happen.
To answer the OP's question, I can't think of a single studio recording on which I can pinpoint Lori's vocals.
Not very helpful, I know, but it's because I've often wondered the same thing that I've listened as hard as I could to hear it. Nothing. The only exception would be live performances (which you weren't asking for). ;)

Yes, to answer the question: to me, Lori and Sharon are frequently mixed into a generic female 'pad' of sound that sits quite far back beneath Stevie's lead. Moreover, when you do hear a prominent female harmony, it's almost always Stevie harmonising with herself. I'm not sure why this is. I don't think it can be because L&S don't have the chops. For example, you can hear Lori on the Wild Heart dressing room footage, and she's a good singer. So it must be deliberate in the making of records, not to foreground them and to foreground Stevie instead.

What about the video for "Moonlight", which shows during the first chorus only Lori singing the backup part "they run from the ones that hunt them" while Sharon is nodding and looking downward?

In Kick It, I think Lori is the prominent voice at the end
Stevie: Well I love you more than life itself
Lori: Something like for evermore
Stevie: But I'm prepared to kick it
Lori: Something like dying...
It's definitely not Sharon - it might be Sara Fleetwood, but it sounds like Lori to me :-)

Doesnt Lori have a prominent harmony solo (meaning no Sharon) in Sable on Blonde? She's singing right along with stevie during the "One fallen leaf" section. You can really tell its her when she goes up to the "hide" on "something that you hide" -- as well as "hurts too much". It's definitely her and not sharon, as we know sharon has the thicker/mellow voice since we have always heard her solo.
just having relistened, i've gotta say, i LOVE Sable on BLonde and would just love to hear it remastered with the rest of TWH.

There was a really neat and catchy song on Sandy Stewards Cat Dancer. The song was called Not Like The Others...or that was the chorus line...and in my record sleeve Lori was the only background vocalist. She gives Stevie more of 2 part harmony which makes her singing base gravity strong and tight...with Sharon...first off...she has 2 very different voices. Her alone...Is like Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simonish...but her back up vocals...she hits the leads high notes from the albums, live...and strong with her dead on pitch. Also, these gals are very intuitive...esp Sharon when in the blow days...she watched Stevie like a hawk and for the vocals...had to sometimes keep some semblance of decorum during those shows.

Planets of the Universe is a good one. Listen to the second verse on the line "in the cool, silent moments." Her backup vocal is very pronounced. She sounds a little like Kate Bush. When I met Lori backstage after a 2005 Las Vegas show, I told her how much I loved her voice in this song, specifically on that line. She gave me the biggest hug and said, "no one has ever told me anything like that before." :woohoo:
