I love this. Even though this song doesn't make a lick of sense, I have always liked it, especially because of the vocals. This video showcases a different version of the song...

I LOVE Mirror Mirror and have a few different demo versions, I could listen to this song all day!:) Thanks for posting this! I sure wish it had been included on RAL , not on the B side of Blue Denim. *sighs* "Oh well....who can tell!"

Holy sh*t what a find!! Where has this been hiding all these years? Jondalar you are a Goddess for this. I literally have tears in my eyes as MM has always been a favorite gem. Someone please make an mp3 of this, it's priceless. I'm just slightly excited about this and could go on for the next hour about how gorgeous the vocal and piano are but I'll spare everyone. I mean a new spin on an old fave with new lyrics too, it doesn't get much better than this!! :blob2:
I really wanted you!!!!

This version of "Mirror Mirror" is what was intended to be the b-side to "Maybe Love" - it's from the Street Angel sessions. It surfaced earlier this year and has been on regular play on my iPod ever since :)

Yes, I'm the one who posted this 1992 version of "Mirror, Mirror" here on The Ledge this past June, from the eBay win (which you helped with, Lindsay, and DLed the song back then, and raved about).
It was recorded in July 1992, produced by Chris Lord-Alge. Sara told me in July that it was supposed to be the b-side to "Blue Denim", but the 1984 Rock A Little version accidentally got put on instead, a mistake. then, this version was supposed to be on Enchanted in 1998, but was pulled at the last minute.

that makes more sense. I never understood why a RAL era song was on the b side of Blue Denim. Pretty big mistake, huh? And nobody could have caught that? It's a crying shame this version didn't make it onto Enchanted. I, for one, am very curious as to what the reason(s) is. I need to know!!

so it was part of the original group of SA recordings or was it just a demo?

It's a fully-completed song; I wouldn't call it a "demo".
Sara told me that Stevie was shopping for producers for Street Angel, and CL-A was one of them, and he produced "Mirror, Mirror" and "Thousand Days" (and perhaps a few more) in Summer 1992. Stevie decided to go with Glyn Johns, who was the producer of the bulk of Street Angel before he left the project.
This "Mirror, Mirror" was found in a storage unit formerly rented by Sara Fleetwood (along with the tapes with the other songs from 1992-1993 that I bumped).

I adore Mirror Mirror, especially this version. Stevie's vocal is so passionate. The musical introduction with piano is absolutely haunting and brilliant and I love the fade-in with the synthesizer and cymbals. I can only describe it as "1990's soap opera music". I think it's unfortunate that a complete album wasn't produced with Chris Lord-Alge. After listening to Thousand Days(which I love) and this version of Mirror Mirror, I don't think he would've necessarily been right for the production of all of the Street Angel tracks but could have been great for an adult contemporary album.

OMG Mike, thanks for reminding me since I've apparently forgotten that I heard it. Oh well at least I still love it lol.

Thanks Mike for the info. You also explained the origins of "Thousand Days", something else I"ve been wondering about for some time now. I always liked that track.

I agree that this is the best produced version of the song that i have heard but I think it represents Stevie at her most vague...When writing she sometimes streams togther thoughts or phrases and hopes it produces a song...Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't....
In some cases I feel that stevie will have a single lyric or a single verse in a song that saves the song for me and there's enough for me to love...Mirror Mirror misses that mark...and then the chorus goes no where...

I love Mirror Mirror. I have to say I much prefer the vocal on the Rock A Little version, however I really like the instrumental on the Street Angel version.

This SA version of "Mirror Mirror" is interesting...and more elaborate. There are sections of it I like better, but overall its arrangement is longer & meandering, warmed over uninspired adult contemporary. Stevie made the right choice nixing Chris Lord -Alge as producer for the SA sessions:nod:!! He also wisely stuck to his strengths as a top mixer. This sounds like Stevie's OSOTM through Timespace tour band arrangements :o. Nothing spectacular here or there ;) Mostly I miss Stevie and Waddy's (he's absent on this SA version) INTENSITY! But I do not miss the 5' O clock news syncopated rhythm of the RAL outtake. I've never minded that this is a story/prose song without anything really resembling a chorus ("Sara" anyone). This song had potential as a pure art piece, But BOTH versions/arrangements miss the mark, so it's not that hard to understand why they weren't picked for official release on her solo records. That said, "Mirror, Mirror" would have made a nice addition to her Enchanted box set's 3rd CD of rarities . Both recording "as is" would only be appreciated by die-hard fans. Most of us!

it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, it's one of her flow-of-mind songs, but her vocal on this song was one of the best vocals of her career and it should of made an album

The new version of Mirror Mirror has atmosphere and Stevie's vocal delivery is awesome. It would've been neat had the old version actually appeared on Rock a Little and been updated for Street Angel. I think this is one of her best songs of the era and the dust bin treatment it got is one of Stevie's many career misfires/inconsistencies (IMO of course).

I love the harmonizing with herself, the melodies and the general vocal acrobatics of this song. Also when she is singing Mirror Mirroorr it really sounds like she is talking to the mirror! The first time I heard this song I liked it because it was around the time I also heard the demos for Thousand Days and Smile At You!

Mike, did Sara Fleetwood mention whether or not Running Through the Garden was recorded for possible inclusion on Street Angel? I know there's been some speculation. If it was, I'd be thrilled if it surfaced some day.

Sara doesn't always answer all the questions in our conversations online, but she does have some great stories and information!
I specifically asked about "Running Through The Garden" and "I Call You Missing" being recorded with "Mirror, Mirror" and "Thousand Days" with CL-A as the producer (since all four songs were re-submitted for copyright in July 1992 as new recordings), but she didn't answer that part. She did say that their Street Angel version of "I Call You Missing" is incredible, though, but she didn't say the producer. But that was right when she was telling me that CL-A produced "Mirror, Mirror", so maybe we could infer that.
However, "I Call You Missing" was still on the "final" Street Angel track listing as late as March 1994, so I'm betting that Glyn Johns produced it, with Stevie & Thom Panunzio tweaking it. But maybe Chris did produce it, and "Running Through The Garden", too. Hopefully, we'll find out!
Off topic: Sara told me about a song of Stevie's called "Crooks Court", and she mentioned it in context with "Watch Chain" as two songs she wasn't crazy about. She seemed very surprised that the fans didn't have their hands on "Crooks Court", since we would probably love it! Ooh, I want this song!!! And the 1992 "I Call You Missing"!!!!!

Yes, someone else mentioned that song back in January. Nice to know there are still things left to uncover.

Thats interesting info from Sara, Mike. Thanks for telling us. I do like this version of MM and all the others. I love having different versions of other songs. The 'Crooks Court' song sounds interesting. I wonder what its about??:shrug:

Me too, I would love to get the Street Angel version of "I Call You Missing" and "Running Through The Garden" as well. If the SA version of "Mirror Mirror" is this good, I can only imagine how great the other two would be!!
