More 'Seeds We Sow' for Lindsey Buckingham
By Brian Truitt, USA TODAY Updated 2h 26m ago

Karma is at the center of Lindsey Buckingham's sixth solo album, Seeds We Sow. With the perspective that 40 years in the music business can give, the Fleetwood Mac guitarist feels he's still on the positive side of the karmic scale.

Lindsey Buckingham says he has heard "rumblings" of a new album with Fleetwood Mac.

Creatively, he has been able to strike a balance between working with his influential band and on his smaller solo efforts. And on a personal level, Buckingham has avoided the trap he saw many peers fall into of putting their music careers over their families.

"I had a lot of crazy girlfriends — it seems to go along with the business — but I didn't marry and I didn't have children before I was ready to," says Buckingham, who had his son, William, when he was 48. "I had all of that other garbage out of the way. So far, we haven't screwed him up."

Now 61, Buckingham is hitting the road this fall for his first solo tour in four years. He also has gone his own way with Seeds We Sow: In addition to writing, singing, producing and mixing the songs, Buckingham self-released the album after his deal with Warner Bros. Records expired.

"We just didn't think they were on the same page as we were," Buckingham says. "They were always thinking, 'Yeah, this is nice, but let's get back to what's really important.' They wanted us to be cranking out Fleetwood Mac albums.
"Let's put it this way: I couldn't be doing any worse."

Buckingham expects there to be at least a tour with the rest of Fleetwood Mac next year, and he also has heard "rumblings" of a new album. The band's last CD was 2003's Say You Will.

But he hasn't missed "the big machine," he says. Instead, Buckingham has enjoyed splitting time between his new album and his family: wife Kristen, whom he married in 2000; son William, 13; and daughters Leelee, 11, and Stella, 7.

A younger generation of fans was exposed to Fleetwood Mac classics on a May episode of Glee that featured six songs from the 1977 album Rumours, and fan interest sparked its re-entrance into the Billboard album chart the next week.

"The fact that all of that stuff seems to have worked its way into the fabric and crossed generational lines, obviously we've done our job properly," Buckingham says.

He says he has never seen Glee, but if show creator Ryan Murphy was in need of more material, he could have his pick of the tracks from Seeds We Sow, Buckingham says: "Just about anything on there is going to make sense for a young listener."

Does anyone else wonder, when he says his 'crazy girlfriends' line, if Stevie is included? And, here, is she part of the 'garbage'?

No. When Lindsey is talking about his crazy girlfriends he's referencing the likes of Carol Ann Harris & Anne Heche. In essence, all the crazy women he dated after he became famous.

Lindsey has really softened up to Stevie in recent interviews, and has probably given her more credit as a person and a muse than he ever has.

Thanks, and I'm sure you're right. It just struck me, so I thought I'd ask. While I'm here, I do wish he'd maybe use a slightly different tone, though. I'm sure he used to talk a few years back about his unhappy relationships in a way that sounded like he shared some of the responsibility for their failure, whereas these remarks come off sounding more like it was all the women's fault. But that's just a bit of a red rag to me, though! And you have to always be careful with interviews, because you never know what's been left out; doubly so for print sources. Just musing.

Usually when he makes that comment he says, "and I was crazy too."

Who's Hot in Hollywood

Fleetwood Mac singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, 62, says being a father late in life has allowed him to relax and enjoy his musical pursuits more — he recently released a solo album, Seeds We Sow. “It does infuse your entire life with a calm and a sense of purpose you didn’t have before, a sense of love for something else,” says the father of son William, 13, and daughters Leelee, 11, and Stella, 7
