so, i'm looking through the list of songs and thinking what silver springs said about it being experimental. while i agree with that, i think that what i dislike on it are songs that are not so experimental, in fact. i listened to one of the newer bands LB says that he likes nowadays - and that is some experimental s**t - i couldn't even stand to listen to the whole song!! (and no, i'm not talking about more mainstream stuff like vampire weekend and arcade fire).
so here are my opinions on go insane songs currently - but i'll give it a few fresh listens to see whether i hear something that i overlooked before:
"I Want You" - alarm clock thing is interesting, the whole song is ok
"Go Insane" - i love go insane song, but album version is very poppy, not that experimental
"Slow Dancing" - too poppy for my taste
"I Must Go" - hmm - i'm ambivalent about this one, sometimes i like it, sometimes i think meh
"Play in the Rain" - bores me
"Play in the Rain (Continued)" - love it!
"Loving Cup" - see I Must Go
"Bang the Drum" - love it!
"D.W. Suite" - love it!

I find 'Go Insane', 'I Want You', 'Slow Dancing', and 'Bang the Drum' to be EXCEPTIONAL Lindsey tracks! Other than that, though, the album really doesn't stick out to me. 'D.W. Suite' is a great track as well, maybe one of the most creative songs he's ever strung together.

Would you be talking about Phoenix? Because, thanks to him, I listened to one of their songs. Tedious. Over produced. Indulgent. Dreck. I don't like that he likes them, lol. He needs to have taste. And to like really strange or folky music (he just looks like the sort of person who would hide in the back, dark room listening to Bjork on his earphones). Probably why I squealed when he mentioned Mumford and Sons :p

i have to listen again - can't remember but think it was dirty projectors. will let you know.
mumford and sons is some pretty mainstream stuff imo, at least what i've heard from them. i like them (btw, LB displaced them from being amazon's #1 dowload w/ his SWS for a day or two).

Dirty Projectors. Hardly a name that appeals to me lol. Some of the music he listens to really is strange.
I know lol. I was aiming for the more folky demographic in that comment. Is it just so wrong that I want him to like the music I like? Then we'd actually have something to talk about :p. Aside from The Beach Boys, I'm stumped. I'm hoping he likes R.E.M. because I intend to shoehorn in my shenanigans at my last R.E.M. concert when I meet the man in December :p
Aaaaand...I appear to have derailed the thread. I tend to do that alot. *Le Blush*. To get back on topic. *Ahem* Yay!. My favourite album.

I tried listening to some song by Phoenix. I have no idea which one, it was whatever came up on Vevo... YIKES. Does their stuff even count as pop/rock/whatever? Sounded like some kind of electronic awful to me.
Vampire Weekend is decent enough to be acceptable, but Phoenix? NO.
Songs:
"I Want You" - I love this. Totally quirky, catchy, and fun.
"Go Insane" - Love of course.
"Slow Dancing" - I like the beat, the synthesizer (or whatever) parts, and the Spanish guitar.
"I Must Go" - See, I think this is great great work by LB... completely not what anyone would expect, but still melodic and fun to listen to!
"Play in the Rain" - part one isn't as good as
"Play in the Rain (Continued)" - Much better.
"Loving Cup" - I never liked this one as much. Not sure why.
"Bang the Drum" - love it!
"D.W. Suite" - love it!

Ahaha. It's like The Editors. It's bloody difficult to name something they did, too. All I know is it all sounds the same to me. To quote my Dad, "That's not music. That's just bloody noise".
"I Want You" - At first I didn't really like this. But as I listened to it more, I got into it because it's just so much fun. It's a lovely introduction to an offbeat album.
"Go Insane" - I do love this. But I'm never sure whether it's the acoustic or album version I prefer. I do tend to fall in love with lyrics before songs, and the lyrics were the first thing that made me fall.
"Slow Dancing" - As much as I hate to admit it, I do prefer the video over the song. But bring them together in marriage and you have one of my favourite "Lindsey moments". It wouldn't have felt completely out of place on Tango In The Night.
"I Must Go" - Carries off Lindsey's trademark quirkyness splendidly.
"Play in the Rain" - How can you hate a Lindsey instrumental? Seriously?
"Play in the Rain (Continued)" - Concurrent
"Loving Cup" - Opens with a very nice guitar riff and has a very eighties, glam rock feel to it, to me. I feel like I should be listening to it in a dark and smoky warehouse wearing a black outfit covered in gems and rhinestones.
"Bang the Drum" - There's almost something in the opening synthesiser that reminds me of a fairground. It's in keeping with the upbeat and merry feeling of I Want You and I love it.
"D.W. Suite" - One of my favourite Lindsey songs. The closing rhythm is my favourite. Reminds me of a Scottish parade. He really should have made a demo version with bagpipes, if just to appease my curiosity.

Like I always do...
To this day, I listen to "go insane" and always hear something different, which is why it is,to this day, my favorite Buckingham record. I do adore it for...yep.. It's so unique.. And so Lindsey..
I'm really digging the new record, too. I do hear shades of Lindsey's past in "seeds we sow".. Why do you think he called it that.. My fave tracks are: stars are crazy, rock away blind, one take, when she comes down (love it), gone too far, that's the way love goes, and illumination.
I've been listening to Seeds We Sow non-stop since Tuesday..thanks Mr. Buckingham.. Excellent record that I'm proud to have in my collection. You made the mac family proud.

Am I the only one who cried upon first hearing I Must Go? :distress:  Probably.
I think it was because I had just finished Storms and was thinking about how CAH first describes hearing that song, and the whole album. And....I don't know that part just really stuck with me...sounds really lame....but it's true.
Even though I have yet to hear a lot of Lindsey's work, I think Go Insane will probably be my favorite because it was how I was introduced to his solo work.
I had the strangest reaction upon first hearing Go Insane. I ventured into Lindsey solo with Out Of The Cradle first. Honestly, how can anything follow that one? If I had to go back in time I would have started from the first and worked myself up, but it is what it is.
Anyway, so when I played GI the first time I was just like, "WTF is this?" I really, really, really didn't like it. I actually made fun of it in my head because it sounded so mechanical and dated...and then I played it a second time, and a third, fourth, and fifth and then...
Bam. I just fell. It is so strange from going from one extreme to another but it soon became one of my most-played albums for like 6 months straight. Every play was a new uncovered nuance of beauty. I love the desperation in his voice on some songs, and the pain, as well as the blatant sexiness and the beauty. There's so many different presentations for each song.
The songs:
"I Want You"- When Lindsey says "I was someone hard to lose" and it goes into the music I just can't...it's the desperation I sort of hear/feel in the way he sings and the lyrics. The verses are crazy. And that's basically what draws me in...
"Go Insane"- Both versions do it for me, though the acoustic is where you feel the pain in the lyrics. But the album version is crazy fun and represents that side of Lindsey that makes him such a singular talent.
"Slow Dancing"- My favorite. Absolute perfection and I want it live.
"I Must Go"- Definitely one of my other favorites because it's got such a sadness, yet the music sort of masks it. I don't care I love the lyrics man. They are simple and say it all.
"Play in the Rain" - This and the one below don't hold me as much as the other songs but I still wouldn't kick them out of bed. ;)
"Play in the Rain (Continued)"
"Loving Cup"-HOT!!!! And I like it like that.
"Bang the Drum" - I don't play it as much and now hearing it again I feel like I never gave it it's due respect. I'm including it in a few new playlists to make up for it.
"D.W. Suite"- gorgeous, beautiful, awesome song is awesome. How perfect of an album closer can you get? Nothing more can I say.

I find it amazing that some peoples opinions on newer bands such as Phoenix, the Dirty Projectors, or The Editors is so negative, granted I'm in my 20's and have seen all of these bands live and own their records, but we are talking about the cream of the crop in terms of current music.
How on earth can you possibly like Lindsey new music and to a further extent Go Insane or L&O, and dislike that kind of music. Are you only enjoying Lindsey because you have followed him for a long time? Mentioning bands like REM as examples of bands you wish he listened to is scary. When Stevie mentions crap like Katy Perry and sings with **** like Taylor swift we have an issue. I'm honestly blown away by the distain for Phoenix, my god, they had the album of the year 2 years ago with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
Do you enjoy Tusk or only because it has the Fleetwood Mac brand attached to it?

ok, so i can't find what i listened to that i severely disliked, but i'll get find it eventually... it sounded very dissonant (you know, kind of like a lot of classical music became in the 2nd half of 20th century:p).
meanwhile, i found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4he_jgJrMCk , and harmonies, or whatever you would call that, sound to me somewhat like BN - no wonder LB likes it. i know i'll be stoned for admitting this here, but i'm not very fond of most of BN stuff i've heard.:sorry:

i'm listening to different songs by phoenix, and it was definitely not them. must have been dirty projectors - whatever highly dissonant song i've heard when i looked them up. i'll find it... as i said couldn't stand listening all the way to the end:eek:
re phoenix, i actually know lisztomania, just didn't know who sings that - was a huge hit a while ago, and i did like it. don't remember hearing if i ever feel better before.

Phoenix aren't really my favorite in the realm of modern bands, but they're definitely a hell of a lot better than most of the crap out there. Lindsey's shown himself to have great taste in terms of new music (as opposed to a lot of what Stevie talks about listening to these days... yikes indeed ) I may be biased because I was already a fan, but it was so awesome to see him say he loved "anything by Radiohead" from 1997 on. It's great that such an elder in the ranks of rock keeps an open mind & has a love for music that, when compared to his & FM's cannon, is pretty far out there. And I personally think it goes beyond admiration, I can hear the influence they have on him in his newer stuff, albeit subtle. And naturally, some of the most talented, progressive musicians today cite him as an influence. Always love when the members of Animal Collective name drop LB
I think Lindsey is just progressing WITH the more art oriented pop rock we're hearing today, that he no doubt had a hand in brining to the mainstream in his heyday..whereas so many other musicians of his stature & age are outside of or unaware of such musical movements, just resting on their laurels.

But see, everyone has different tastes. Although I personally enjoy a lot of Phoenix there are plenty of other amazing indie bands out there that may be along the realms of other people's personal taste. I see what you mean, though, and you make a lot of sense. I think LB has pretty fantastic taste in music, as many of his personal favorite modern artists are ones I adore as well. But then again, since I agree with him of course I'll say he has fantastic taste. ;)
And I kind of love R.E.M. Not everything, but certainly they have made some great stuff. I would never put them on the same level as Katy Perry or Taylor Swift (barf). I mean...come on! They may be more mainstream but they have had quality stuff.
I did think it was cute that Stevie Nicks mentioned John Mayer's album Battle Studies as her personal top album and then Lindsey, when attending some Grammy thing, said this just skip to 0:24):
<iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yviRsUDJBbA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Woah. Chill out before you explode, or have an embolism or something.
Just because they're artists you like, doesn't mean that people who enjoy one artist automatically ought to like them to or they're being some kind of music heathen. We're perfectly entitled to dislike them if we so wish. Being "current" or not has absolutely no baring on it. We enjoy music because we have a personal connection to it, be it lyrically or melodically. Just because an artist resembles their style doesn't mean we'll have the same connection. And seriously....You think winning an award is a good enough reason to listen to an artist? Honestly? Well Chris De Burgh won awards but I'd still rather have my ears plastered.
No. Does that answer your question? I enjoy music because I enjoy music. I couldn't give a hoot about the brand attached to it. As you seem to accuse us of enjoying Lindsey's music merely because it had the Mac brand attached to it (which these days is barely even relevant considering how far removed the styles are from the other), I feel it necessary to accuse you of the same. You seem to hold alot of store in what's popular currently, what album won an award (and why that removes any right people had before of disliking them), and as such, why it is such an offence to not share your own tastes.
To be honest with you love, your post makes me quite angry. Which may be due in part because the hypocritical aspects of it are quite glaring.
Oh, and by the way...R.E.M. rule. That's my opinion. May not be yours but I don't even care.

I sometimes think that love for Go Insane will depend on how old the album was when you first heard it and how old you were.
I first saw the video for 'Go Insane' in 1984 when I was almost 10. I had never heard a song like it and I had never seen a video like that one.
I did not hear the whole album until 1988. At first listen, I loved almost every song. It did take time for some parts of D.W. Suite to grow on me.
If someone first listened to GI after they heard OOTC , they are going to hear it differently than someone who listened to it earlier.
If someone first listened to GI in 2004, they are going to take it very differently than someone who listened in 1984.
I've heard the comments about how 'dated' it sounds. I know that good music should be 'timeless' and sound 'fresh' in any era. Still GI is a 'period piece'. It's always going to have '80s' stamped right on the listening experience. Still, that can be okay.
You can tell what eras paintings are from by the style, but that doesn't detract from something being a work of art.

A great way to listen to GI is in sequence, after Lindsey's songs on 'Tusk' and the "Law and Order" album. Such a different style to L/O, much more 80's. Suits Lindsey's intense ('turmoily') style back then, IMO.
To me, GI represents an evolution from the delibarate off-key Tusk stuff and the off-center L/O stuff. Both of which I love, incidentally. ;) But it's Lindsey going as mainstream as he would wit hthe 80's style music.

It's very rare to hear the word "mainstream" used synonymously with Lindsey's work :p The next time I have chance to break out my vinyl I'll take your advice and do the whole Tusk, L&O and GI sequence. I look forward to the new perspectives. I don't usually tend to sequence my listening, and merely jump from album to album of whatever artist I feel like at the time. So a more technical approach would be interesting to take. I think the last time I listened to GI, I chased it with Nick Drake. Boy was that an experience :p I never believed that you could literally trip listening to an album before that.

I don't listen to music that much anymore. I'm sad to say that it was this car commercial that turned my attention to Phoenix. I thought the music in the commercial was captivating and I wanted to know what the lyrics were. So, I did an online query for that car commercial and I saw that it was 1901. I saw that the lyrics I was focusing on were "fold it, fold it, fold it." From then on I got the song and then I got the album. But for the commercial, I never would have inquired into the band.

Go Insane has always been my favorite Lindsey-album. It still is, but SWS is becoming a real contester. It are both albums with a thought throughout. UTS is too, but it has some weaker songs I think. Still, these albums are the ones that I cannot put on pause. You have to listen to them beginning to end, because everything seems to need eachother to shine in full form. The other three, to me, are more compilations of songs, and although on OOTC everything is linked too, I still feel that those songs standout more "alone" than as an album.

Yup. That's all I could think when I first heard MPP. I love both albums. Animal Collective and Lindsey... I wonder what they could come up with if they worked together. They both write great pop melodies and have plenty of glorious weirdness.

I love the second part of "Play in the Rain". It is such a cool piece of music. My friend and I like to sing along to it, which essentially means swapping off singing the instrumentals. It's very fun.
I don't love the title track but I honestly think that is because I heard The Dance version of it before the album version (seeing as The Dance got me into FM/Lindsey) and preferred that. I also don't like "Slow Dancing". It's one of my least favorite Lindsey songs.
"Bang the Drum" is awesome (makes sense, since "Eyes of the World" is one of my favorite FM tunes), I love "I Want You" and "I Must Go" has always been a fave of Lindsey's solo work. "Loving Cup" I can take or leave. It's not as interesting as most of the rest of the album (except "Slow Dancing", zzz).
I love "D.W. Suite". I love the different movements of it and it's really quite gorgeous and moving, musically, and vocally awesome. Very calming to listen to. I wish he'd put something like this together again. Also, as a big Dennis fan, love the sentiment.

Lindsey has a pop sense of melody. what you reveal is what YOU hear when you hear Tusk and Go Insane, certainly not what I am hearing.
and "cream of the crop"? it is to laugh. the state of music is awful, but we haven't sunk that low yet.
Well, that was the one that gave me an instant headache
exactly. i always feel nauseous.

I actually made fun of it in my head because it sounded so mechanical and dated...
I think most people had a strange reaction to Go Insane. One
of the record store managers I used to work with concerning promotional
materials (on occasion) commented that he didn't like Lindsey's solo
material. Though at the time I was becoming a big Lindsey fan, I
understood where he was coming from. Lindsey's albums are an
acquired taste. Like you said Go Insane sounds dated, very
dated! But so does Stevie's Wild Heart. And it's my favorite
of hers. Drum machines and all.

I collected Lindsey's solo albums in order. GI still makes my head throb:laugh: I appreciate him for trying to be artistic., But all I hear is.....noise. I keep coming back to this album thinking, Maybe this time it'll be better. But nope, and it's been over 10 years since my first listen.

Yup. That's all I could think when I first heard MPP. I love both albums. Animal Collective and Lindsey... I wonder what they could come up with if they worked together. They both write great pop melodies and have plenty of glorious weirdness.
Yes, I always wonder if LB has listened to Animal Collective cause I think it would knock a door down in his mind and if he know how they admire him maybe a collab would be in order. Both of them making music together would be ridiculous.
