Painful to see my beloved WSS go.
Annabel Lee was the easy choice for me, but YMBTO was painful. I just couldn't touch FWIW or Moolight, though.
God, this album is brilliant.

IMO "Annabel Lee' has the worst vocal and blandest melody on the album. FWIW could have been pretty great but for that coarse/flat/GodsGardenesque quality to her voice on the chorus.

Me too...."Moonlight" and "Annabel Lee" are of the same level of quality as Stevie's classic songs. The YMBTO fans are pretty fervent about keeping it going. It would have been my fourth vote off (after "My Heart", "Ghosts Are Gone" and "Soldier's Angel" in that order).

Yup, Annabel Lee is a pretentious nonsensical effort at putting an irrelevant and inappropriate poem to very pedestrian music, while FWIW is basso profundo flat vocals over a sleepy, depressing, irritating arrangement.

I'm not sure I understand the first bit of that. Are you saying the music is too pedestrian for Poe's poem? Is that what makes the poem irrelevant? Or is the poem irrelevant in another way, to something else?

Yes, I'm curious too.
irrelevant and inappropriate poem to very pedestrian music
I agree that the music is pedestran, but I'd hardly consider Poe's poem irrelevant. Inappropriate . . . well maybe in the necrophiliac sense. If it's about his wife/cousin the 13 year old that's creepy too. But what is tedious in a song means a lot to me in the poem.
In the poem the repetition not only stresses the depth of his feeling and agony, but his growing irrationality and madness. In that sense, it reminds me of The Bells -- another poem Stevie should not try to sing.
The actual poem carries a petulance and resentment that the song lacks and I think it captures that anger you get when a loved one is taken away. You feel a "too good for this cruel world" thing and start to wonder why someone you love was taken when less worthy people are roaming around leading meaningless lives in perfect health.
I think that's a phase of grief that they should talk about more. You go through denial and anger, but the anger has multi-folds. It can be made up of paranoia and resentment too. You're mad at the person who left, but you're also mad at the world that took them. The God (or angels) who spirited them away, but there's also a resentment, a jealousy towards those who still live. Poe's guy said that the angels were jealous of Annabel, but I think he was kind of jealous that the people who survive have lives and passions inferior to his own and they can still enjoy them.
I think the emotion the poem deals with is quite potent.

The poem was written long ago by a man about a girl, which makes it an irrelevant theme for a song by Stevie, who is a woman. To me it makes no sense. Why couldn't she have been inspired by the poem and adapt it to be more appropriate? The melody and arrangement of AL is pedestrian, to me, quite ordinary, and fails to compensate for the way offbase lyrics.
I simply cannot see where the love for this song comes from. I am baffled by both the song and the reaction to it.
Just opinion, is all.

Well, I agree in a sense. I don't want her to adapt the poem and change gender or anything, but I think it's one of those things you can be deeply inspired by but not exactly want to hear with music. Just because the lines are sing-songy doesn't mean they should be sung.
I think you can take the spark of an idea and incorporate it, which is what Lindsey did with A Dream Within a Dream, but not all good poems make good lyrics -- and vice versa.

Granted, the drugs were there throughout, but the songs you mention, especially the true classics like Dreams, Sisters, Sara, Storms were before the drugs really took over. And Stevie herself has said that Jimmy really disliked her using drugs and she tried hard to cut back while they were together (Edge of 17).....

I don't think it's irrelevant - I relate to a lot of poems/songs that are written from a man's perspective about a woman.. love is love. If she was inspired/touched by it, then how could it possibly be irrelevant to her? And it being from that perspective doesn't mean it is inappropriate.. she's just singing from someone elses point of view, or maybe her own, depending on who Annabel Lee is to her personally.
I'll belt out 'Yesterday' and keep the female pronouns in tact, because that's how it was written and who am I to change it? The meaning is still the same.

This is interesting, and I'm wondering why that atmospheric disconnect didn't occur to me before. What you have in Stevie's track is a great pop hook applied to something altogether much more angry and twisted. I'm going to have to watch this doesn't spoil AL for me!
I don't think it will, though. I think what I immediately connected with in the track was the coda, from the drum break, that kind of stomping 'I lie down' repetition. Maybe that's a hint of fierceness coming through? I don't know. I'm content to keep living with it and let it evolve.

That's why it reminds me of Gypsy. If you don't pay attention, it sounds just like a catchy, relatively happy little tune, nothing too serious or anything. But then you listen to the words carefully and you're like damn, this is kind of depressing..

And I think that people are just obsessing over it because it is about her and freekin Buckingham. if you connect personally to the LYRICS of this song then I get that But don't tell me that you don't like country music, And then are obsessed with the song, If that is the case you might try listening to some more country. ALSO Don't try to tell me that this is her greatest vocal ever, Because I've heard her use more voice inflection in interviews. She herself admits that she talksang this. That bothers me because I know that her voice is capable of so much more. The girls harmony is superb. Especially on the chorus I think the chorus is fantastic. I also love the line I used to love you so much, because she sings it like she means it. Dave's guitar in this is typical country, and nothing spectacular. And as much as I enjoy hearing her talk The verses are just her talking, and I think that's what gets. that for me and not in a good way.

That's exactly the reason why i love this song so much. "I used to love you, see the light inside of you, i used to dream that you were an angel, and i was a starving child" are some of the best lyrics she wrote on this album. The "talking" verses are just there to underline the chorus' melody, and harmonies. I love it.
Those 4 songs are like the main reason why i love this album so much, so i'm not voting (and we all know that Moonlight is going to win anyway).

Because rather than the somewhat casual attitude most people have in voting on this, for some reason the people pushing YMBTO have invested emotionally in it. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up coming down to Moonlight vs. YMBTO (which is baffling to me) with the YMBTO lovers suddenly finding all kinds of "faults" with Moonlight.

You know, the way this poll is constructed, I really don't think you can shove anything down anyone's throat. We used to do a poll on fmlegacy where you could rate a song in points and it did make me a little distressed when Matt or Chili would give songs very low points like even a 0, to insure that they couldn't win. But there's less room for such machinations here.

Are you kidding? If any song has been shoved down people's throats it's Annabelle Lee. The song didn't even appear as a song that could be kicked off until other songs were kicked off. It was saved. Moonlight was the song to save, since it's almost always considered the best song from this album.
Annabelle Lee is way tooo long and her voice is the moast goaty on it, although not terrible. It's not as sophisticated as You May Be the One and it doesn't have the great ending. You May Be the One is a GREAT song.

Sorry but the 'starving child" line in particular kind of kills it for me ..maybe we can blame that one on Dave..."Annabel Lee" is one of Stevie's top 10 solo tracks ever IMO the production is top notch and the drums are the best on a Stevie song since Seven Wonders.

I don't rate songs based on sophistication. I don't even know how you would determine how sophisticated a song is.
Annabel Lee has an amazing track, the production is super, the music is wonderful, it has that amazing interlude, and it's melody/chord structure wise it's rather complex for something Stevie wrote herself.

Team YMBTO are master strategizers. Should be interesting to see it up against the Moonlight juggernaut. I actually don't know which one I would choose (they're my 3rd and 4th fave songs on the album).
It's a no-brainer that Moonlight is going to win.

Annabel Lee is very unique in that it just might be the only song that Stevie has written the music for, but not the words ( for the most part).
YMBTO's " sophistication" has nothing to do with Stevie and everything to do with Dave Stewart.
I love YMBTO but I love Annabel Lee more.

Well the best part of Annabelle Lee, the bridge, has nothing to do with Stevie and everything to do with Waddy. And this round should be over by now. Are people waiting for a last minute Annabelle Lee save? 911 views, compared to 600 for the last round. Are you kidding?

Indeed..and it's also kind of interesting that in the great reviews this album recieved like Rolling Stone for example Annabel Lee was cited as a stand out track, many others mentioned FWIW ..not one single one even mentioned YMBTO yet the first two have more votes.Kind of an interesting phenomenon we have here.
Well, no it's Rolling Stone reviews are not quite amazing. Remember, Rumours. They didn't like Dreams.

Not really. It's very similar to "Gypsy" composed to the chords of C, Bb, F & G, with Dm added for flair during the interlude. For me, I instantly connected the dots to Gypsy, even when I just heard it in demo form, thats why this song sounds very vintage FM/SN. And actually, Gypsy is a little more complex because it utilizes some F & B major 7th's & F major 6th chords  but I digress......

Just wanted to say...she didn't even write most of Annabel Lee :p
YMBTO ftw
Not True. Stevie wrote at least 50% of the song when you consider she composed the melody and the songs whole chord structure. Waddy just added little interlude Dm A Dm C Bb etc....EAP the lyrics obviously.

yeah, the interlude is the best part of the song and takes the song in a different direction.
P.S. I'm getting real tired of these polls. I'm talking crap about songs, but the truth is there is not really a bad song on the album.

PuLEEZE! This song so deserves to be here you conspiracy theorists!:p
YMBTO is great classic songwriting Plain & Simple! I've always contended that it has an Eagles air to it in the melody, esp the chorus, with those big sweeping D, C major chords.
My love for this song has nothing to do with it (allegedly) being about Lindsey, nor has it been crammed down mine or anyone's throats  as Phoenix declared! How could it? It's buried at the end of the record (3rd to last song), Stevie has barely talked about it in great detail during interviews (outside of mentions of it being Dave & her 1st collaboration in the same room), Stevie has not performed it live or included it on her current tour, nor has it been brought up as a standout in any critical reviews. Fan's have deservedly connected to it all on their own. It was like finding a hidden treasure on the whole record:nod:. The lyrics resonate, they are universal, despite being about a certain somebody in Stevie's life. And finally, I completely disagree that the lyrics sound forced or sound sing-songy or sing-talky . There...I feel much better....rant over.

Yes! And yes again.
On the conspiracy subject: Stevie didn't even write Annabel Lee. It's just a poem she liked and set to music. If Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus or god forbid Lady Gaga had done this and had a huge hit with Annabel Lee, there would be so much trash talking about how uninspired and stupid the whole thing was. It hardly deserves to be in the top 2 let alone the top 5, in my opinion. Is it a good, fun song? Yes, it most certainly is. Is it as good as Moonlight, For What It's Worth or You May Be The One? No way. And finally, it's an utter and total travesty that For What It's Worth had to be sacrificed to (maybe) save You May Be The One. Give me Stevie's lyrics any day over someone else's words.

Why would shippers like the song for romantic reasons? In it she is saying, "You'll never be the one for me, you low life liar. Dry your crocodile tears, take your fake apologies and leave."
That's not something that makes me go, "Oooooh, Stevie and Lindsey forevah!"
If shipper hearts were voting, I'd say that Italian Summer would be in the lead, because it is dreamy and loving and, yes, I do think it's about Lindsey and his guitar. Everybody Loves You is about Lindsey, according to Stevie. I don't see that in the lead.
I can understand that the song you like is losing, but I don't understand casting aspersions on people's motivation for liking other songs.

Yes, I know you're sick of it. I just didn't understand your SHIPPER. SHIPPER, SHIPPER conclusion.
This song has little positive to say about the relationship in question and many other songs that do are not winning out over FWIW, so your rationale for people keeping this song in the running out of blind love for SnL, just didn't seem logical. It's really quite clear. There were four songs - the two songs with the most votes were to be eliminated - one got 43, and two got 40 each, resulting in a tie. Thus all three were eliminated leaving only one track left.
I suppose we could have only eliminated For What It's Worth only, and put You May Be The One and Annabel Lee up for a tie-breaker round, but what's the point really in delaying the results for several days only to come to the same result? In the end, the winner was going to be Moonlight. We all know it. There is no way that either of those songs were going to come out on top of Moonlight.

But with that kind of logic, we could have just done one poll, saying vote for your favorite.. and tallied them up according to how many votes they got, and ranked them that way? Right?
I thought the whole point of a 'survivor' thing was to see who would be the last one standing. 'Cause with this type of thing there's a lot of strategy and stuff to keep certain songs in as long as possible, which definitely influences how people vote..

To your first question: Yes, absolutely. In the end the results would likely be the same, with the odd exception every few years. In the years I've been posting on this or other boards, the same songs almost always win these games. It's predictable from the first round. Wild Heart wins Wild Heart; No Spoken Word or I Can't Wait wins RAL, Bella Donna or Edge wins Bella Donna; Blue Denim always wins Street Angel. TISL wins the TISL survivor. This year, I think How Still My Love won for Bella Donna which is just weird - tantamount to the U.S. electing a non-white self-professed-atheist lesbian President. It's that odd, in my opinion.
In the end, strategy is usually pointless. I believe that none (or very very few) of the folks who fought to keep You May Be The One - myself included - were going to pick it to win over Moonlight, because Moonlight is like Dreams or Silver Springs or Sara - it's an instant classic in the grand tradition of Stevie songs.
I'd love to be wrong, but I don't think I am. :xoxo:

What this really is about is that YMBTO fans wanted a chance to try to take it all the way to the win. I don't think this is about anyone caring that "Annabel Lee" or "For What It's Worth" might have got 'robbed'. (I don't think YMBTO got robbed either, just pointing out that there's a group of exceptionally passionate people about that song). All that being said, I don't really see the point of dragging it out either, so YAY "Moonlight"!:blob2:
