I have been listening to this song on repeat for 3 days. I know this song sounds familiar to those of us who lived the 70s and 80s, but no one has came out with such a ass-kick song in so long, this song sounds refreshing.

I'm just really digging the riff, the vocal and the feel of this song. There is a manicness to this song that just get your brain pumping. I think it is one of Stevie's best ROCK OUT songs, along with Edge of Seventeen and I Can't Wait. It belongs on her greatest hits, because it shows the rocker side of her.

I think if it were to ever get released she would need to cut it down by a 1.5 minutes, but there is so much to work with for a single. That shouldn't be a problem.

I wonder if I'm sooo attracted to this song because I'm male. I have noticed that alot of other males dig this song and turn it up!

I just drove around Columbus Ohio with my speakers full blast listening to this song, and I want some more....

I did listen to you honey and always liked it, unlike some others who blew it off. But what I'm saying, is that I'm gravitating to that song more and more. When it comes on, I turn it up really loud. Since every song is different, it really makes an impact. I mean, rock has been dead for soo long, and out of the blue comes Stevie with this thing. I just love it. It's never boring. I'm really finding that I love the second half of the album better than the first.

You have good taste. Rock has been dead. This is a shot in the arm. Thank god.

This song is totally my jam. I rock out to it ALL THE TIME!! My dad used to yell at me for having this song on too loud and he had to do it multiple times...that's when you know you have a good rock song . It's one of those songs that just lets all of that raw emotion out. Plus that "really cool guitar riff";) is pretty darn awesome!

I wish I could hear this song the way you all do. The intro and outro guitar part just throws me off the song. I just can't get into that part. I like the long drawl on "heerrrrre" and such...that gives the song some character. I love the lyrics. Really its just the heavy guitar, especially at the end, that just doesn't work for me.

I still think its a very good song. It's just that comparatively its the weakest on the album (for me....I'm not counting "My Heart" as a regular track).

I didn't take much to this song, musically. The riff does remind me of '70s hard rock, but I never much liked that, either.

The vocal line needs more movement across the staff. Something ....

Yeah, I love me some rockin' Stevie that's for sure :xoxo: but at first I thought the riff was unoriginal as well - an underwhelming throw back. But I've come to appreciate the riff much more 4 months into the record, especially the ending (and Stevie does not have many songs with a signature guitar riff that really stand out outside FM (i.e., Rhiannon, Gold Dust Woman) besides "Edge" , so GAG is refreshing just in that fact. But also the riff is raw and has an alternative reminiscence of something between The Cult meets The Smiths and some of Morrissey's latest solo works over the last 5 years. I do love the song & she needed a decent rocker on the record ala "Fall From Grace", but my only complaint about GAG is that I have a hard time connecting to the lyrics  They're not horrible, just not very original or special as her kiss-off songs usually are i.e., Long Way To Go, Fall From Grace.

As an aside, I too think this song is about her coming to terms & peace about her relationship with Joe, putting it squarely in sober perspective and releasing the ghosts of that relationship for good! That's a really long way to go to say goodbye and good riddance :laugh: just 2 years after outing him as the love of her life in 05'-09';)

Interesting. I like the sound of the riff, but not the long drawl that you describe.
But my big problem with the song is that the riff needs Stevie singing along to it. I make up lyrics whenever I hear it. A Stevie solo song should emphasize Stevie, not a guitar. Even the great guitar parts on "Edge" & "I Can't Wait" don't pull focus from Stevie.

I think GAG is no better or worse than her rockers on the Street Angel album. It fits well with "Love is Like a River" and "Listen to the Rain".

One thing that I love about GAG is that it usurps FFG as a concert number. I'm so glad to see Fall gone. I appreciated Stevie wanting to keep something edgy in her setlist, whether the audience knew it or not. I was proud of her for that, but Fall did nothing for me. I feel that Ghosts Are Gone is more unique and its sound more catchy, distinct and diverse. To me, with Fall, Stevie tried to create with voice and emotion, the spark that a rock song should have built into its music.

Yeah, GAG does usurp FFG as a concert number. These songs are pretty opposite, too. FFG has way too many lyrics and GAG has just enough. You get to enjoy the music and let it carry you. One of the best rockers she has ever done. Such a Godsend on this album.

P.S. She doesn't have anything from TISL she should play. This album usurps that album just about completely.

There is a thing known as a remix or an rearrangement. Something Stevie has never heard of. A lot of artists do it. It makes a song fresh and new. I wish she would do something like that.

I'm the opposite. I love "Fall From Grace". The speed of its rock really takes you to the edge in the opening, and I love it that the song ends with a whole new verse. The lyrical allusions to being on stage and the still tense relationship with Lindsey - even during their rekindling - make for a great song.

I like "Ghosts Are Gone" a lot lyrically. I can't agree with whoever it was that said that the lyrics aren't imaginative. I actually think the lyrics of "Ghosts Are Gone" are better than the lyrics to "Fall From Grace". I like the rocking sound. I just can't get used to the loud guitar at the beginning and especially at the end of the song: For one thing, its not that catchy to me. For another, it sounds totally added on over the song, especially at the end. I find myself constantly trying to hear the song under the riff at the end. If there's one song on this album that needed an edit, IMO, this is it.

Yall will learn to listen to MiMi!!! Lol!

I don't know. I think I "May" have told yall this first. It's in the Initial reactions to IYD thread and I call GAG possibly her best song ever. Just saying.

That being said, this song has fallen a bit for me. Now that I step back and have had time to let it sink in, Fall From Grace is still the most rocking Stevie song of this century and it is FAR better live. The ideal situation is the wiltern where she did them both. And I do think shes doing the right thing by playing GAG instead of FFG on this tour and hope she continues to do so, so as many people as possible can hear GAG live, since we have ALL heard FFG pretty much. But if she ever does one of her random tours down the road (not saying I want her do but "if" ) FFG should come back and GAG should leave. It's not an In Your Dreams lifer song like Sorcerer and FFG have become for TISL.

And then Love Is should be removed and For What Its Worth could be the new closing song.

Hands down my least favorite song on the album. The reviewer who said that it sounded like a ZZ Top cast off had it right, and I can't say I have a high opinion of "good" ZZ Top songs. The track sounds...forced...to me somehow, and the lyrics aren't just uninspired, they're completely unevocative and impossible to either listen to or remember.

The end of the song kind of redeems it for me. Otherwise, I wouldn't really like it much at all. The guitar is nice but doesn't affect me greatly or anything.

With Stevie's lyrics, because they are oftentimes so... abstract? (I guess.. you guys know what I mean), it usually doesn't matter if some of the words themselves aren't exactly clear, because I can hear the meaning through them, if that makes sense. Or at least, what I interpret to be the meaning, what it means to be, etc. However, I just don't understand this song, at all, aside from the ghosts being gone, hah. Ultimately the verses just confuse me. I don't dislike the lyrics, but the fact that they still don't make much sense even after being repeated in some variation throughout the whole song.. LikeAWillow is right in that it makes it hard to remember them, and for me, hard to relate to them or attribute a meaning to them.

However, sometimes I have fun sitting in my car trying to figure out what in the world she means. So it's not all bad.

It's one of my least favorites on the album, but I still like harmonizing to it, and like I said, the end redeems it for me. The ending lyrics as it trails off evoke more of a feeling for me than the entire rest of the song.

I thought Jim Ladd might be on to something with the meaning of the lyrics to this song when he asked Stevie if it was in response to a song from one of her ex-lovers. He didn't actually come out and state who, and when she didn't catch his draft he said he was maybe reading too much into it, but I think you could read it as a response to Don Henley's "Miss Ghost", from his 2000 album, Inside Job:

On a misbegotten, moonless night
I stumbled in my door
Disgusted with my circumstance
Soaked to every pore
When floating from my bedroom
Came a moaning and a sigh
“Oh, I've had one too many
It's just the wind,” says I

I lit up a cigarette
And I poured a good, stiff drink
You see, I needed to compose myself
I needed time to think
No sooner had I settled down
The moaning came again
Drifting through the silence
Like some otherworldly violin

I bounded up the staircase
I went slippin' and slidin' down the hall
You know, I've been around the whole, wide world
But I was not prepared at all
Uninvited visitor, unsuspecting host
“Well, I see you've made yourself at home.
Good evening, Miss Ghost.”

You're more beautiful than ever
I feel just like a kid
And I commence to trembling
When I think of all the things we did
Skin as pale as marble; lips as red as blood
Imagine my surprise, my dear
I thought that you were gone for good

You look so lovely lying there
All stretched out on your back
But I'm the one who's strung up here
On old temptation's rusty rack
And in the wee small hours
Is when I miss you the most
And I confess it, I have missed you
Miss Ghost

I threw open the window
And I howled at the rain
And I cursed the weakness of the flesh
This breath and bone—and this brute, reptilian brain

What dirty tricks the mind can play
In the lonely dead of night
When you bump into the shadow
Of a faded love that wasn't right

Way down beneath the surface
Far beyond the light of day
So many things lie buried deep
And baby, they should stay that way

Oh, my wicked, little habit
We've really made a mess
Everything's been trivialized
In our vain pursuit of happiness

And even though you've come for me
I won't go back with you
To some temporary heaven
Down some empty, dead-end avenue
But it's been so good to have you here
And I propose a toast
“Here's to seeing through you—
Miss Ghost.”

Or maybe I'm like Jim Ladd and reading too much into it??

I can't really compare these two songs because they are as different as night and day to me.

I prefer Fall From Grace because (I think) I understand what it's about; it speaks to me. I hear a whole story. I have no idea what she's trying to convey in The Ghosts Are Gone. I just cannot follow it. There doesn't seem to be much of a story, other than some people leaving something, somewhere, or someone.

So help me out. Who are the lost girls? Why plural? Who are the boys who are gone? Why plural? What do the lost girls and the boys have to do with each other? What the @#$% is this song about????!!!!

Hmm. I've never really given this much thought since I don''t care for the song too much, but since Stevie has said this song is about the ghosts of relationships past, my guess would be that those lost girls and boys are people from past releationships. The crushes, the troublemakers, the subject of fights and jealous fits, the secret (and sometimes not so secret) loves, the "other" man or woman, the stranger you pass on the street that looks at you like they know you from a past life and makes your head spin because you think about them for days or weeks.

Sometimes, all that fades away or gets put to rest. Then, you just see yourself for who you are, and who you've been in the past doesn't matter anymore. The ghosts are gone.

Stevie has said in many interviews over the past decade that she sees herself as being all about ACDC and Led Zeppelin. In reality she really isn't. But I love that in her miond thats what she feels. Specifically in 05 right before her first vegas shows, she was telling Jim Ladd how her whole thing when she's rehearsing for her show, is I'm just like ACDC. I feel like wiht Ghosts are Gone she finally has lived up to that ACDC/Led Zepplin vibe that has lived in her head for years. So in the words of Daniel Tosh "For that Ghost are Gone we thank You"

YES!!! Haha totally agree, this song is great because it's different from the rest of the album, and also very fun and free. The slide guitar riff is kind of like the synthesizer on Stand Back because those portions set the songs apart (in a good way) from the rest of their respective albums.

I like this. This interpretation makes sense to me in the context of Stevie's past. All the hanger-on's, sycophant & groupies, be them musicians, love interests, past business partners, photographers, etc., Male & Female...ALL GONE! She's clean out the baggage, and only the true friends remain in her circle. This happens as we get older, our circle of friends becomes a little smaller as we reflect and understand who's most important in our lives, and whose trouble and draining.

Aside from a couple of songs on The Other Side Of The Mirror, and the song Gate And Garden, I continually find a lot in her lyrics that makes a whole lot of sense. I didn't understand it when I heard it, it just sounded cool (to paraphrase Chris' take on Stevie's lyrics) and I haven't been able to reconcile the actual words with what Stevie says the song is about.

To me, although I don't think about vampires when I hear Moonlight, I do think of ghosts, vampires, maybe even zombies when I hear GAG. I think of the undead (or the unfinished) and as we move from verse to verse, I imagine them queuing up to be crossed over into the afterlife. Here you have these lost boys and they're gone and then, up next, you have lost girls and they finally disappear. It's like they were wandering and now they're all standing in line to find resolution and, one by one, they do and they're free to disappear in peace afterwards.

So, that's what I imagine in my head when I hear it and it doesn't bother me that it doesn't make sense. I actually ask myself more questions about FWIW and why "even if" and the good intentions and the non sequitur, for what it's worth. There's a suggestion that sometimes his intentions aren't good . . . that he has to struggle to keep them honorable. And if the outcome would still be that it wouldn't work, why doesn't she say that, instead of trailing off?

Those gnaw at me more than the GAG words, but in a good way. I think the questions make FWIW better. The GAG questions just make it fun and zany.

Is anyone else amused that the acronyms for this song spell GAG? When I read that, it makes me laugh like a little schoolboy.

When I first heard this song, I thought this was about all the rocker guys Stevie has known. They have slept with many woman, so many infact, that each one is soooo fleeting, they feel like ghosts. It's a song she wrote for men. They pray on LOST girls. Nature of the beast.

Speaking of rocker guys Stevie has known....after GAG, the next song is Tom Petty's Last Dance with Mary Jane..... Jim Ladd is a shipper! Not the first time he's played Stevie and Tom next to each other! hmmmm.... hahaha.

Can someone tell me what a shipper is? New term for me.

Someone who advocates a romantic relationship. The term originated with the X-Files, people who saw (or wanted) a romance between Mulder and Scully were shippers, those who did not were noromos.

And this is quite powerful stuff. Many years later, I just saw a photo of Gillian putting her hand on David's face, fingers touching his hair, to hug him goodbye when he was leaving a function and I nearly fainted.

Don't be a shipper folks, it's not healthy.

Lmao yes! There were rumours that she was going to name the album after GAG and I was so pissed because it would have been a terrible acronym for an album.
