View Full Version : Stevie put out to pasture

It just occurred to me that Stevie has been put out to pasture. She has put out a really good solo album and doesn't have a chance of getting airplay. The A/C and Triple A stuff is crap. It's not going to get her record sales. The only thing she can do is promote and promote and promote on TV shows.

She has country songs on this album that should definitely be on country radio but they will never play them. Doesn't matter if her songs sound more country than a lot of country songs out there. She is Stevie Nicks - associated with Witchcraft and blah. They'll will never play them. Glen Campbell and the Dixie Chicks can remake what they will and have hits but they won't play Stevie. She is old to boot.

The funny thing is there is not really any good music out there. I mean, people complain about record sales, however, what is new and exciting? I mean I haven't heard anything earth-shattering. Katy Perry and Adele are decent, but nothing too special. Gaga seems more like a performist artist than anything. We have seen these people before. Blah, who cares.

I haven't heard a great song in years. I know rock is dead, but you would think that when a rock star like Stevie puts out an album that is as good as anything out there, people would play it.

I consider bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin being put out to pasture more than someone like Stevie. They haven't been prolific in decades, and yet, they continue to be popular. Miss Nicks is still touring, still making records... She's still successful. I think the truth of the matter is that Stevie will be put out to pasture eventually... once she stops making music. And even when she's dead and gone, you'll still have people twirling in their bedrooms to Gypsy when nobody's looking. ;)

I dont need Stevie to have a hit record to feel good about her.
Shes made a great record, and i love it.
I don't need to hear these songs all over the radio to know that they are amazing.

Stevie is fighting to get her music to be played If she does another solo album I really think she should do an all country record hopefully it will get played, Country is the way to go if she wants to go there, She always pretty much has a little country on all her records. I consider her a classic rock artist. I have requested to play her new music and no response from the local radio stations except for one dj sent me back an email saying oh cool I love her, she didn't say she would play her new music and I listen to the radio all the time and not once I have heard 3 songs of Trouble In Shangri-La were played quite a bit here in ct on classic rock stations and some pop stations.

Stevie's not the only classic rock artist to release some of the best music of their careers and have it ignored by radio. Peter Frampton (Thankyou Mr Churchhill) Heart (Red Velvet Car), Robert Plant, The Doobie Brothers, to name a few, all have put out first rate records and not a stitch of airplay. The music on the radio in 2011 has to have an electronic tinge and a rap verse to even get noticed. The big difference is that current "artists" will not be heard on a great record 30 years from now. At this point, if our favourites continue to make great music into their 60's, heck 70's, we should be happy with that. None of them need the money, and I don't really care if they sell millions of albums and I don't think they really do either. Winning awards would be much better recognition. Oh, and Stevie will never go out to pasture as long as she has fans like us.

Oops I missed the most important point of all this...these artists, including Stevie, make their bread and butter on the road and they make more in a few shows than most of us do in a year, so feeling bad about no radio airplay and record sales? Not.

Yes i agree!! & with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac/Stevie {Queen of rock}, plus many more bands, that will live on forever & will never really die, which cant be said with the crap we hear on the radio stations today, most of them will be long forgotten.

Stevie put out to pasture .I say so.According to radio airplay.I've been saying this for along time. She got to record a country album.Probably got to team up with a young country artist.I hate to say this guys.Maybe with Taylor .The only way Stevie will get on the mainstream charts.she got to team up with one of these young artists.Radio is strange biz. They love you ,or they dont.I am glad the FM's SYW did get some radio airplay .but mostly on classic rock stations like the River format.Mainstream music sucks these day.

I haven't listened to the radio (except for NPR) since the mid-'90s. And I really don't like the idea of Stevie doing something gimmicky (like a country album, or an album w/ Taylor Swift or whoever) just to try to get played on the radio. There is good music out there, but it's all stuff I've found online - I have no idea if they play Fleet Foxes or Florence + the Machine on the radio, nor do I really care.

Also, I was under the impression that local DJs don't even decide what to play anymore, for the most part. It's all dictated by Clear Channel or whatever corporation owns the station(s).

I squirm to think of Fleetwood Mac as the Gatsby of rock, chasing their airplay & their hit singles decades past their commercial heyday.

Fleetwood Mac believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning----

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the "Rumours" past.

Your right.Corporate radio is in charge.Crap Channel .CBS and so on.Deregulation of broadcasting industry from the FCC ruined that.so big corps like CC buys up all the competition.

Was her record released in the time span for a possible Grammy nomination for 2012?
Anyone know the logistics of that? Or HOW a record is chosen for a Grammy nom?

I second that! I think most people I know get their music from online "radio" stations, like pandora or the like, where u can select the sort of music u want to hear and it streams that. radio has been extremely limited in what it's playing, and it's usually always the same bs. I honestly don't think it matters if Stevie gets AirPlay on the radio. of course, it'd be nice, but everyone is streaming online. and god knows, the woman has a surprisingly strong presence online for someone who doesn't care for the Internet!

I feel to that it is the radio station that is the problem. It is not Stevie, it is not her music...it's the radio's fault. We all know that Stevie has been out there like a "new wave car salesman" trying to promote this record. She is trying and doing her best to get it out there. And honestly from what I've been hearing the record sales aren't doing that horribly. And even at the concert in Cincy the other night, most of the crowd was enthusiastic about the new songs. Some, like me, were even singing along! I have a feeling that this record isn't quite done yet. Especially with all the promotion she 's planning on doing in NYC.

And as for Stevie being put out to pasture. I don't think that's going to happen. As a new fan I promise you that once you hear one song, you have to listen to all of them. Stevie's music and poetry is timeless. She's not gonna leave our hearts or our speakers anytime soon. :wavey:

well, we can't really blame the radio, per se. the radio stations are only doing their deal to ensure that they can get advertisers/companies to buy time on their station. of course, it makes sense that they would aim for the demographic that is supposedly the "ideal demo" which is white heterosexual males between the ages of 13-25 or 18-35... something around that age range. and honestly? when you think about it - when SN and FM were getting the bulk of their radio station airplay, it was around the time when guys between the ages of 18-35 all wanted to "bone" stevie or chris (or perhaps, secretly, lindsey).

to be honest? i really believe that the radio is completely outmoded in this day and age. it really is all about having an online presence. i would love to see stevie more involved in that, but i also LIKE that she's not. i like that it's all pretty much fan based and that she remains the elusive and magical Stevie Nicks!

though, i would love to see her hire a really really awesome graphic designer who will put together a beautiful website and design some awesome shirts rather than some of the stuff that i've seen out there. ya know? clean, simple, ethereal... keep with her "boho-rocker" brand, and give it a little more of a refined polish. in fact, i wish that instead of "concert t's" or whatever, i wish her people would sell whispy scarves with her name embroidered at the bottom with the concert tour name and the year. ya know? or does she do that?

Some people need to get over the fact that Stevie is not going to be tearing up the radio play charts ever again.

In Your Dreams has been a success, and she does not need to be all over the radio to prove that.

IA.

And I think we can all agree that radio play does not determine the value or quality of a song. It's nothing generational, either - as an 18 year old, I can honestly say I haven't turned on the radio in close to six months. Why? With a few exceptions, it's crap, and they play the same dozen songs in constant rotation. So why even worry about it.

Finally! A thread about Stevie's relevance and current sales!

I know, not this dead horse again! When are some people going to accept it. Stevie is not going to have Top 40 hits again like she did in the 70's & 80' unless it's a complete fluke accident. She made an amazing album on her terms, that does not pander to any current musical trends. That alone is brave and deserves respect and attention - which it has by most critics and fans if you've been paying attention.

IYD seems to have won over even the most hard to please Stevie fan by most accounts. Not to mention, thank god she didn't recruit a current chart topping artist or producer to collaborate with in a desperate attempt to try and gain more attention, as Cher recently has with her upcoming song with Gaga:rolleyes:, which most likely will only get attention on the Dance charts when its released. IYD as a whole could be Stevie's biggest artistic statement solo on tape. Seriously, it's the record I've been waiting for from Stevie since Bella Donna. It checked off practically every box on my list. Would I like it to reach more people? Of course I would... but I'm ok with its performance thus far & hopefully all her hard work in the studio and promoting this record will pay off with a Grammy nod. But if not, Oh well:shrug: I know that Stevie didn't sell out. She's a bona fide artist on her own terms... as most always!

I totally agree and that's what I was trying to say. It's not Stevie's fault that she's not getting played on the radio. And she honestly doesn't need radio airplay. I'm al 18 and do I listen to the radio? No. It's just so repetitive and boring. I'm much rather listen to a CD and my iPod instead. In Your Dreams has pretty much been on heavy rotation on my iPod since it came out and as far as I'm concerned the music is touching me and you guys so that's all that matters. Music. to me, is something that starts out very personal but the great thing about it is that you can share the feeling of the music with others:nod:. Stevie's right music does "lift you up". And I'm honestly not that excited by the music that is on the radio today. Stevie's album is doing fine. I just wanted to say that there's nothing that we can really do to change the radio airplay. Wasn't trying to suggest anything else. :)

Mama is finally getting the respect she deserves as a solo artist. She is a true pioneer, started her own record company with Paul and Danny and debut as a solo artist with a #1 record. She could have walked away from Fleetwood Mac, but she stayed loyal to the band. She was introduced as the "legendary" artist Stevie Nicks on all of those recent TV shows. She has become (already was) the poet, priest of nothing, and the legend she wrote about all those years ago. She belongs in the R&R Hall of Fame as a solo artist. She embodies/defiends everything that is rock and roll, female style without compromising but embracing her femininity.

I dont remember when the interview was done.Maybe someone here remembers.

I love your logic and obvious sarcasm. YOU think a LOT like I do.............................

Stevie addressed this today on GMA (Friday) when asked why she did this album and she said basically that a year and a half ago she ignored all the people telling her that "internet piracy" would make it impossible for her to sell an album. I guess she was wrong and they were right. I am not a big fan of IYD and was sincerely hoping that Jimmy Iovine would have stepped in and given us another BD, BUT alas, that did not happen. Regardless of whether its good or not, IYD is destined for the bargain bin of history and the Dollar Tree or Big Lots because it is NOT a greatest hits album and except for a few songs such as FWIW (which I love & SA and also SL) there's not much to like. Country or not, it wont be a cross-over hit either.

I am not saying give us a greatest hits, BUT give the people what they want and she didn't do that despite her protestations to the contrary. She did this album, according to her, because she had a whole bunch of songs she wanted to give us. Did it work? I don't think so since the sales have not been great and its currently at 198 on the top 200 of Billboard. Does anyone think that sales of 200 K is great? I dont??

Except for FWIW and SL, is there a single song on here that would be a Top 40 or XM/Sirius hit? I don't BUT thats just me and my cynicism. I think that history will bear me out.................... Come on even AL, GAG and Wide really take some listening to get used to........................

And to answer your question: ", but you would think that when a rock star like Stevie puts out an album that is as good as anything out there, people would play it.[/QUOTE]?[/U][/I][/B]

A: No, perhaps its NOT as good as anything out there??? Maybe only in Stevie and Dave Stewart's mind?? Now, lets say it all together as we watch sales plummet despite her precious endeavours of promotion ..........." Street Angel" ' (personally, I am angry that she used Dave for this album (5 songs at least), he's simply not the type to produce her. Where the F was Lindsey when all this was taking place. He would have put her on the charts with a great CD. Of that and Lindsey's abilities I am sure!! I have always said, "Nobody does Stevie like Lindsey!!"

I dunno Mike, BUT there were several good alternatives and DS was NOT one of them. I'd go with Jimmy if Lindzers was too busy on his own project (which he was). I completely agree about Jimmy, of course,. But does anyone have any insight if Stevie and Jimmy still have a working relationship or was he so burned by her behavior during the drug years that he won't produce her???? I've always wondered why he hasn't produced her again.

Is there any chance in Hades Stevie would want Lindsey to produce her album, or that he would want to produce a Stevie solo album? Look at how much she complained about Say You Will!

Jimmy Iovine was probably busy with American Idol, Lady Gaga, and his two companies to spend a year producing a record by Stevie, which, by the way, they'd have to find a dozen songs for as she no longer writes her own music, really. It seems like Dave was there 24/7, which she probably enjoyed and needed. That just doesn't seem realistic for a guy like Jimmy I. who has more than one project going on. He seems to be more interested in the young crowd now, really.

Don't get me wrong, my crush on unibrow knows no bounds. I think he could have done a great album.

Jimmy is chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M, he is more involved at the Executive Producer level anymore. Even If they were ever to work together again, He likely would just delegate Stevie to work with another producer(s) & collaborator(s) of his choice, with Stevie's blessing of course;), and oversee the final selections and veto as he saw fit. Besides, I don't think he works in depth with artists outside of his label. Jimmy Iovine was wonderful for her in the 80's, and they still are friends, but Stevie made the correct choice and advanced artistically into the here and now imo.

David, you maniac. LOL. I hate that that makes sense.

And to answer your question: ", but you would think that when a rock star like Stevie puts out an album that is as good as anything out there, people would play it.?[/U][/I][/B]

Oh lest I forget, FM is putting together another album as we speak. Now that I can't wait to hear!!

Eh, you're getting a lot wrong here. First, sales of 200K ARE great in this environment, especially coming from an artist in their 60s. Nicks has outsold other acts in the same age range that recently had albums out.

You say that In Your Dreams is "Maybe only great in Stevie and Dave Stewarts mind??" [sic] but, with a few scattered exceptions, the album has been widely lauded as probably the best in Nicks' career. I get it that you don't care for it, but Rolling Stone rated it higher than they did Bella Donna, Entertainment Weekly gave it an "A" grade, US Weekly gave it 4 stars (out of 4), Boston Globe gave it 4 stars (out of 5), etc. Basically the point is that your person taste (or mine) don't by themselves dictate the quality of an album. Album quality is a combined metric of many peoples' opinions, and if you look at the critics alone, the majority of them view this as not only a good album but a great one.

To be honest, I don't think even Jimmy Iovine would satisfy you. What you're looking for is never going to happen. You want Bella Donna again - the same feelings you had for that album, the same atmosphere, the same sales, etc. It's just not going to happen. Nicks is never going to be able to match Bella Donna *based on putting fans back in that emotional place they were for that album*...she is however able to keep producing great music, and all she can hope for is that fans listen to it with an open ear and an open heart and are able to take *new* music into their hearts rather than blast the new music as "not being as good as" the old music (when what's really happening there is you aren't feeling the intense emotional love for the new music....and we forget, our love for Bella Donna wasn't instant, it took time to grow too).

I agree.Me too. They play the same crap every hour .on the hour.you did not miss much.I couldn't agree more. Regular radio is crap. I don't have the new Sirsus radio stations so I don't know if they are better or not? Its a shame that radio can't be more creative in what 'they' play. It is boring and all they play are the hits by artists when some of the more obscure songs are better than the 'hits' sometime to me. Its sad but its true. I'm sure Stevie isn't the hit she used to be but you can't go by the public anyway there fickle. They only like whats 'now' not whats old & used to be. Its sad really. Stevie can still put out alot of 'new' or older things to satisfiy us as fans. If she will just be open to that. Another Box set of rarities is something I'd buy etc. She does have options I hope maybe Dave helps her see the 'full' picture really. Strike while the iron is 'hot' so to speak. Just a thought.:D

I completely agree with this thought..I wish Stevie would head straight back in the studio...this lengthy, revolving cycle of FM and solo projects is way to time consuming...Between Lindseys lengthy (over) production process and Stevie's procrastination we have to wait years for music...I believe Dave could convince Stevie thats there another way to do it....Stevie's music and career would be helped by a little spontaneity !!
