Well, I was home for lunch from work. And I guess what I thought was a plane going by & the wind blowing the lamp shade in the bedroom was the earthquake. My dog didn't even flinch. And when I got back to work, they asked me if I felt it. I thought they were joking. You know, when I was younger, we had one here, & my mother said it was a plane going by when we (kids) asked. I guess that still works for me now

Happened about an hour away from me, first I thought my cat was climbing up the back of my chair rattling it  but then the whole house starting shaking a bit, lasted about 10 seconds but it scared the hell out of me. I'm so jittery right now aaaaggghhh. It happened in an active seismic area though so I guess it was to be expected at some point, just glad it wasn't bad, no injuries or damage really anywhere and the aftershocks were small.

We felt it all over LI. Probably not as bad as other places but it was definitely felt. It was freaky. I felt it cause my wheelchair was rocking.

Oddly enough I'm far less worried about the hurricane, I guess because I'm very much used to those. :p

the epicenter is about 20 miles north of me...shook the house for about 20 seconds or so...have had 4 aftershocks so far...I don't know how people in California deal with this...I'm still a bit shaky and I'm tough ;) ...next up, the hurricane...more used to that, though...ah well, I've lived to see Stevie again on Sept. 3rd...all is good...

I guess it would be the same if California had tornadoes...midwest folk would just snicker at us Left Coasters for being so panicked.
5.9...that's a good jolt...unless my house is falling apart around me, I just consider them Mother Nature's thrill ride.
From the Weird & Eerie file: Go to the USGS site and look at their Earthquake Map of the USA. The quake in Colorado is damned near the same latitude as the Virginia quake. I think there must be a big underground extraterrestrial base that's trying to launch a big ol' UFO and didn't quite get the quality control right. Hey, ET can screw up, too, right?
"Hey, Quark, I thought you said these were the coordinates for the Bermuda Triangle? We keep hitting solid rock here!"

My building in Times Square shook pretty significantly for about 30 seconds. Long enough for us to be like "Um, are we shaking? Are we having an earthquake?!". By the time it was done, people in DC and elsewhere were tweeting and confirming it was, the first I've ever been in. We were told to leave the building for awhile but it was all pretty low-key.
I think it's funny West Coasters are laughing at the East Coast. Keep in mind that earthquakes happen here extremely rarely and are never felt, so I think it's understandable people were a little concerned. Seeing how SoCal does when it rains, I think we're even! Call us back after you have two feet of snow!

That's rule #1 of earthquakes...DON'T leave the building...especially hi-rises...who knows what's falling off the building onto the sidewalk? You risk infinite more danger from what could be raining down on you by going outdoors than staying inside a building.
Seeing how SoCal does when it rains, I think we're even! Call us back after you have two feet of snow!
I spend a whole lotta time in Colorado during the winter, so despite being a native SoCal'er, I CAN deal with snow, cold, etc. Granted, I'm a rare individual in that, since if the car in front of you sprays too much window washer fluid onto the trailing car's windshield and the driver thinks it's starting to rain...good God, get the hell off the road, the end of days is upon us.
That we DON'T have snow in SoCal (except at extremely high elevations...geographically, I mean, not psychologically) is why all you East Coasters & Midwesterners have relocated here and jammed our freeways & crowded our neighborhoods. Left to the native SoCal'ers, we'd have less people than Nevada or Montana.

Conversely, when a funnel cloud is sighted out here or a small tornado occurs, everyone goes into apoplexy. It's all about what you're used to.
