Fan favorite: Stevie Nicks evokes unforgettable memories of a rowdier, yet simpler, time
By Barbara Kuntz

People! Stevie Nicks (diva, Diva, DIVA) is playing Saturday night at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, and I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling verklempt. Don’t talk amongst yourselves yet, though. I have something I must say. Bear with me, my k-dumplings.
My complete, undivided and upmost adoration for Stevie began in college, so I’ve been a devoted fan for years older than some of you are old. When I learned of a Fleetwood Mac concert at Dallas’ Reunion Arena I had to be there. Someone — I didn't care who — was taking me to see Stevie.
I found the perfect roadies (blessings upon you, my friends) who played Stevie all the way to Dallas, with a few acceptable interruptions of The Doors, ZZ Top, The Stones and more period music. (I was patient.) Singing our hearts out all along Interstate 35, we somehow made it to the stadium parking lot, God bless. And the next thing I knew, I was inside the arena ready for Stevie.
Yes, ready to tumble for her.
OMG
I stood in that venue for the entire show (I was young then, so no swollen ankle problems). It was the most powerful concert I have ever seen. It was like heroin, so I’ve heard. Stevie, in lacy black, flowing attire — she looked spectacular; did you see her nails? — captivated the entire audience, casting a spell like the witch she had been accused of being.
Mick Fleetwood hammered out the drums, sexy Lindsey Buckingham played his guitar in a seductive manner to a flirting Stevie and Christine McVie melted, melted like butter, everyone with her keyboard and vocal performance of “Landslide.” The Dallas newspaper said Christine stole the show, but not in my opinion. Not from my Stevie. She was fabulous. To die for.
OMG
Yes, in my second life, I want to be Stevie. Hello, gorgeous! For now, dressing in all lacy black with black boots for Halloween and, of course, carrying a tambourine, the essential accessory, is as close as I can get to being this remarkable woman.
Watch for me. I’ll voodoo your pants off when I’m Stevie, thank you very much.
OMG
My best date in college came shortly after that Fleetwood Mac adventure with a friend who was just as crazy about the band, mainly Stevie, as I was…and always will be.
“Come over. I’ve chilled a bottle of your favorite wine, and we’ll sit on the couch and listen to some great music.”
I did, and we did, playing the entire album, both sides, of Buckingham/Nicks.
It’s a memory I won’t forget. (Approaching verklemptism now. Wait, wait. Ah, there, it passed.)
Years later, caught in a sudden rainstorm in West Texas, I grabbed my then 10-year-old son to hop in the car to head for ranch house shelter. (Yes, I was at a ranch, believe it or not, a fabulous ranch at that.) What did we play? What else? “Thunder Always Happens When It’s Raining.”
We immediately felt safe, all thanks to Stevie. (Stevie, we love you, we adore you, you are beautiful.)
I must say, my son is in college now, studying to be a doctor, thank you very much. Yes, my son, a doctor. I am so very proud.
I play over and over again the video special featuring Tom Petty and Stevie, The Heartbreakers’ legendary, honorary little sister, in their rendition of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Watch it. No one does “I Need to Know” like Stevie in that same duo performance. Again, to die for.

Correct. There was no "Sorcerer" and "In Your Dreams" did not make its way back into the set.
After GDW she talked for a couple of minutes about Amy Winehouse. She said something to the effect of "the part at the end with the 'baby, baby, baby you can't see me, you can't feel me, you can't save me'...I feel like nobody saw Amy Winehouse," and she talked about how sad it was that nobody "saw" her, etc. It was a nice moment.

Typical Stevie.
First she said 7 new songs. Opening night was 6. Now, we are down to 5. Wool pulled over our eyes again. :distress:
At the Red Rocks show, she seems kinda apologetic for doing new songs, during her speech after Stand Back. It's sad she doesn't have confidence in herself or her fans to try new things and be creative while out on the road.

I'm gonna make this quick since I need to head back to Austin in a few minutes...I was in the 4th row in the pit, just to the right of Stevie, in front of Carlos. Luckily with nothing but cool people around me. Before the show, I mentioned to the couple sitting directly behind me that I'd probably be standing a lot - they had no problem with that. Most of the pit was standing through most of the show anyway. There were 8 1/2 x 11 papers taped on the stage that said, "Do not take video from cameras or cell phones." :p The security guy closest to me said we could take pictures, just don't hold the camera up for long periods of time.
I was concerned about something being dropped with this being her third show in a row, but was Sturgis a full set or just a few songs? Anyway, I'm glad it was Sorcerer and not one of the new ones.
She may have cut down the miming during Secret Love, but she still does it during FWIW. I'm pretty sure she saw me "driving" with her on one of the choruses.
When Stevie first spoke, she said something like, "I thought it was going to be really hot here, but I don't think it's so bad!" I agree, it wasn't too bad once the sun went down.
Soldier's Angel was beautiful - I was looking for the flag-draped coffins on the video, but either I missed it or they took it out? For a long time, it was just that gorgeous Desert Angel picture of Stevie in front of the "Sgt. Robert Garcia" flag, with her hands together and she's looking down. Then there was another picture of a flag, with Stevie's silhouette at the bottom.
I still get goosebumps when the crowd sings along with Landslide, Houston did a good job.
When Leather and Lace started, I moved to the aisle, where a security guy was already standing in the middle of the aisle at the 2nd row, expecting a mad rush, I believe. But hardly anyone tried to rush the stage, the front row people didn't even approach the stage until the drums before Edge started and the security guy stepped aside and let me up. I still can't believe more people didn't follow? There was a couple sitting next to me, the woman was a huge Stevie fan and this was her first time seeing Stevie solo. I looked back and motioned her to come up too, she stood right behind me and had her first Stevie hand-holding moment. :D Other than her, there was no one else behind me, and no pushing and shoving at all.
Alright, I need to hit the road, I'll add more later.

No, there were 7 to start with and we're now down to 6. Unless you're not counting Secret Love which you really have to count.
And the number 14 has been Stevie's average number of songs for a couple of years now. She usually starts with 15 and it goes down to 14.
The only other move I can see her making is ditching Ghosts and putting Fall From Grace back in, which is still a vbery respectable 5 new songs. I'm not hoping for this, but it would make Stevie comfort zone sense.

Yeah, that was unexpected. There was something different about Stevie's GDW performance last night too, during that part - like she was in her own little timespace...
I've been checking youtube for vids - nothing decent yet, except this highlight clip that the Pavilion filmed:

Thanks for the review Livia. And I would just like to add that I LOVE the "baby, baby, baby, baby, you can't feel me now" ending to GDW. Has she been doing this since Soundstage or did it start before? Did you get to talk to Stevie during the Edge walk?

She started the "baby, baby" thing on the Crystal Visions tour, so yeah, that would be Soundstage.
I think I just blurted to her something like, "I love the new album, I love you, and thank you for doing so many of the new songs." I have no idea if she heard me. LOL But she was looking right at me, nodded, smiled, and then went on down the line...

Yeah, the amount of new songs on this tour is quite a treat. I am hoping beyond hope that she comes to FL soon. Anywhere in this state and I'm there ("cos I care"...). I was worried about cancellations and/or delays, so I didn't consider Atlanta. Good thing I guess!

I don't know what is about the Woodlands Pavilion, but I ALWAYS have a good time there, lots and lots of memories...last night was a little bittersweet since I was missing Brucie and it was my first time at the Woodlands without him. :( I thought I'd cry, but I guess I got that all out of my system at the Wiltern show.
They did have the AC cranked in the pit - it pretty much hit you in the face while walking down the aisle to get to the pit - a cold rush. My hair is pretty long now and I thought it would end up in a hair clip to get it off my neck , but I was okay.
Good luck w/ FL. But you might want to consider ATL just in case. Maybe they'll reschedule it for a weekend night once this is all sorted out.

Saturday Night: Stevie Nicks At The Woodlands
By Chris Gray Mon., Aug. 15 2011 at 6:00 PM
Stevie Nicks
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
August 13, 2011
Aftermath can't help but wonder if the people who think Stevie Nicks is some kind of wand-waving white-witch faerie queen have paid much attention to anything she's done besides "Rihannon." Not that Nicks didn't give those Woodlands creatures what they wanted Saturday; we were just a wee bit surprised at what else she gave them.
To bend the title of one of her albums, Nicks didn't rock a little Saturday; she rocked a lot.
Nicks is not going to make Lita Ford or Joan Jett (and probably not even Pat Benatar) cast any defensive spells around their amplifiers. Probably. But "Stand Back," a wicked wind-machine workout of an opener, and the new "Ghosts are Gone" had a much sharper hard-rock edge to them than we expected, like Nicks was hiding razor-blade fingernails in her fingerless gloves.
Truthfully, Nicks - blonde, beskirted and bewitching as ever at 63 - needed no other talisman than Waddy Wachtel, longtime L.A. session guru and Keith Richards' onetime co-pirate in the X-Pensive Winos. The white-haired guitar warlock on Nicks' sinister side (to those of us in the audience) lent a touch of Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper, never more than on the extended introduction/incantation to "Edge of Seventeen" that threatened to fan up some bubbly Deep Purple smoke on the water.
But Wachtel also had the possibly thankless task of tolling up the stark electric chords to accompany "Soldier's Angel," the song from Nicks' new album In My Dreams she wrote after a visit to Walter Reed hospital - including an up-close MASH-unit encounter on the way out that left her visibly shaken, even Saturday - during which she shapeshifts from angel to widow to mother to nurse. The other spellbinding moment Saturday was "Gold Dust Woman." Wachtel conjured psychedelic L.A. flesh memories from Morrison Hotel and Love's Forever Changes, as Nicks spun her golden shawl-clad self into spasms of interpretive dance as she spun the song said to feature a woman sobbing as one of its multitude of tracks into a stream-of-consciousness meditation on the fate of Amy Winehouse.
"People didn't see her," Nicks said after several minutes of incantation-like lyrics that were nearly lifted word for word from The Who's "Tommy."
The rest of the evening was more standard Stevie, less gripping but no less enchanting. She is forever the cool rock and roll aunt who, as long as you don't spill your apple juice on her shawl, will tell you tales of woodland nymphs, players who only love you when they're playing, and vampires in the moonlight until well after the witching hour.
But was that a hint of a fang in her smile? Only Stevie Nicks knows for sure.
Personal Bias: Aftermath saw the final Harry Potter movie weekend before last and is now re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Again. We suspect it may be affecting our work.
The Crowd: About 75 percent female and over 40; 100 percent devoted.
Overheard In the Crowd: "I love you, Stevie!" "Get in line!" - between-song dialogue between two dudebrahs in our row.
Random Notebook Dump: Um... we thought she'd be taller? Sorry, didn't really take a lot of notes at this one.
