those bootleggers are always finding a way to sneak the cameras in there, always. My source said that you have to be careful and hide the camera well when filming in the front row!!

I have such mixed feelings about this, but primarily against Stevie's favor. I totally get how it could be distracting to have people at your feet recording your every move every night. And if she were to flub, it could possibly be exposed to thousands of people instantly. She can't even leave a venue or go to a restaurant without being recorded by multiple people either. That'd definitely get old.

On the other hand, Stevie has absolutely no problem using things like youtube to her advantage. We pretty much have youtube to credit for Secret Love's inclusion on In Your Dreams. She's used youtube to research outfits and hats for that Australian horse race. It really irks me how Stevie derides computers for the dissolution of society in one breath, and extolls the internet age's benefits in another. The internet & youtube can be SUCH a powerful & free publicity tool if you stop fighting it and use it to your advantage.

I'm good as long as she keeps all other songs in the setlist. "In Your Dreams," in my opinion, was the most disposable of all the new songs. People are going to want to hear "Landslide," there's no getting around that -- I'm just glad she dropped "In Your Dreams" instead of "Annabel Lee" or something.

I agree. IYD had people dancing in the aisles.

Of the new songs - and I know I'll get flack for this - I think Annabel Lee is the least interesting. She put a famous poem to music. That's nice, but it's not exactly the height of her creative songwriting powers. Plus, it's a bit of a downer... the guy sleeps by his dead love's tomb every night. Can you say "messed up"? lol

If any new song is dropped I would say Soldier's Angel cause Lindsey isn't there but i hope she keeps it.

Why doesn't she just add Landslide instead of dropping IYD. She's weird like that. She did 16 songs at the wiltern so i don't think 1 more would b a problem.

I think the reason she didn't just add Landslide...and she totally could have, it's a nice easy one to sing, is because of timing... The shows end at exactly 11pm... and I think there are restrictions on how late shows can go... and penalties if you go over. With the show so well timed out and rehearsed right from the get go, there's no wiggle room.

Rut-ro...well, if she really said "filming," then maybe that's what she's really pissed about - people who wouldn't put their cameras down for one second. I hope it wasn't Jake - LOL. He was texting me about how happy he was that his Row C seat turned out to be front row - not sure if they don't have rows A and B at all, or if he's in a section off-center that begins with Row C.

I never take any video at a concert, but I do have my camera up a lot. I decide to wait for a moment to click and I'm looking through the lens, finger on the button, waiting to snap. I'm not trying to film those people to put it up on Youtube, if that's what's got her so worried.

This makes me wonder . . . I keep thinking of when FM security came out from behind the barrier and told me to put my camera away and didn't say anything to any of the other 500 people with cameras. Maybe they thought I was filming. At any rate, if you don't have a flash going, she shouldn't let it distract her.

Just got back from the show. The ladies she called out totally deserved it. And yes she said it into the mic. I don't feel sorry for them cause they were obnoxious from the time they arrived in the middle of Michael Grimm's set.
One of them got up in front of Stevie's mic waving her hands during Secret Love so her friend could get a picture of her, I guess?! I can see how it would be very distracting. I wasn't paying attention to them enough to know if they were filming but I think Stevie is totally justified in asking them to stop. And If I was distracted in the next section, I can only imagine how it was for her. I have never seen Stevie angry like that and I have to admit, I kinda liked it. Don't mess with Stevie and her show!

The show was awesome but the crowd was pitiful. For Annabel Lee and Ghosts Are Gone, my friend and I who were in the front row :D were the only ones standing up in the front section AT ALL ! Everytime we looked back no one else was standing.. The crowd only stood for the "hits". I was disgusted that no one showed any appreciation for the new songs. I loved the smiles my friend and I got from Stevie and Waddy though who truly seemed to enjoy us dancing and singing :D
I truly hope no more of the new songs get dropped as the tour progresses for everyone who hasn't seen them live.. They were awesome!

I was able to get the setlist from a roadie and got a double hand grab from Stevie during the Edge walk. She also spoke to me when she grabbed my hands but I couldn't hear what she said :distress:
That almost made up for the crowd's lack of enthusiasm but there is really nothing more upsetting to me than seeing our girl sing her heart out with such passion performing those incredible new songs with zero praise from the crowd. I just don't get it. Why pay $250 to go see a concert just to sit all night especially during a rocker like Ghosts !?

I got busted at the Dallas Tom Petty concert when Stevie was on tour with them like that. The guy told me to turn off my flash and I did, but the the thousand other cameras going off around me ended up getting me yanked (literally) out of my seat and hauled off to the security command base. We get there, he hands me over to his supervisor who couldn't figure out why I was there. I had to go through all my pictures and show them there was no video (which there wasn't). I only had about 12 pics for the whole night at that point. God, I was pissed. I almost missed Stevie coming out.

Although I have said Landslide should come back and am glad that it did, I do not think it should have been at the expense of a new song, particularly the title track and name of the tour. She said she'd do anything to get these new songs heard and now she drops one already? Hmmm... In Your Dreams should definitely be the first encore with Landslide at the end or even Has Anyone Ever - either one but not Love Is. Love Is should be before Edge. She did a 16 song set at the Wiltern so Landslide should be back without sacrificing anything. Again, hmmm... Although if she were to add back an IYD track let is be New Orleans. Then I'm ok with her dropping IYD lolol

Not to split hairs but I think saying this is about the internet and/or youtube is an oversimplification. I think it would be distracting to be filmed regardless from the front row. If she's filmed from a few rows back where it's not in her face she would be ok with it or at least not that mad. She knows she is filmed and that things end up on youtube. Her problem tonight, however, was the proximity and the specific obnoxious behavior of these people. There is a difference...

I’ll try to be coherent, though I’m simultaneously tired & hyper from a zillion ice coffees & sugar foods from IHOP after the show, & I need to take out my contacts soon…Not to mention I'm on the inevitable post-concert-Stevie-high…

This was (I think) my 18th Stevie concert, counting Mac shows. My last four before this, I had front-row seats. Tonight I went with my friend Shellie for the 3rd time in a row. Last time we were front row center in Dallas but (supposedly at Lindsey’s request) security let 12 rows up to the stage from the start of the show & we almost lost our spots at the stage. This time I bought Row C by phone because I did not want to gamble that better seats would come up, & I figured if several rows might go up anyway, what do I have to lose. According to the online map of the venue, our seats tonight would be 2nd row, but the Ticketmaster woman insisted they were 3rd row (made sense, considering this was C!). Either way, the map made clear that these two end seats stuck out at an angle, with no seats in front of us, so if we had to rush the stage, we might not have to hurt/maim anyone. Always thinking of others, I am.

The venue at Grand Prairie is indeed interesting. Once there, we realized that Row A is only in the very center section (of 5 sections). So in our section (next one from center), we were 2nd row (since 1st row is B), but because no seats were in front of us, and our seats were angled, we were as close to the stage as the Row A people of the center section. Score! Nice surprise. Happy dance. Happy text message to Livia. Let the heavenly chorus of Street Angels sing.

This venue has the lowest stage I’ve ever seen at an indoor venue for a Stevie show – about hip-high. As a result, Stevie’s mic was pretty far back from the edge of the stage. The stage was easily climb-able, & perhaps this is why nobody was allowed up to the stage until Edge.

Air conditioning was on high, meaning I was fine, but the TX natives around me were freezing their Lone Star assets off for the first time in all this miserable summer.
Shellie got a margarita for sixteen freakin’ bucks (now we know how they afford the a/c bill). Glad I’m not a drinker. I am, however, a pee-er, so in fairness I will note my appreciation of the clean & spacious men’s restroom.

The official camera people kept filming while standing or kneeling right in front of us (I mean in our ticket section, not the men’s restroom of the last paragraph, just to be clear), which was a bit obnoxious. Hopefully this will not be a problem for people attending other shows. The camera people seemed to want to film Lori & Sharon especially from low angles, and given the two singers’ <ahem> pleasantly ample frontal curves, I’m doubtful that any camera could ever get a shot of their faces from down there. But I digress from their work, their voices...

As many fans have experienced, normally in the front-pit we can’t hear our own voices for all the noise from the speakers up by the stage, but tonight the volume was not loud at all. Lori and Sharon were almost completely inaudible, at least where we were seated. I could see their mouths moving but heard nothing at all of their vocals during most songs. That was a first for me; if anything, the traditional complaint has been that they sometimes drown out Stevie. Lori turned around to correct the sound people during almost every song, and Stevie did at least once as well. Could not tell if they were part of the solution or the problem. Sound for the whole band was especially off during much of “Annabel Lee” and part of GDW.

Security was probably the tightest I have ever seen at a show, & I’ve seen some doozies. Yes, the pit crowd seemed shockingly tame, but at least part of that seemed to be the result of security pouncing on people to sit or put down their cameras. It was almost comical, with people sitting upright at attention, like they were being graded, at least in the first rows.

Now a lengthy moment for some petty venting that will have little interest to anybody but me, but I'll indulge anyway. Blame IHOP.
As always, I made a point to talk with security before the show to see if & when we might be permitted to get to the stage. They knew nothing about the Edgewalk & whatever, but kindly offered to let us be the 1st to know once anybody was allowed up. Awesome. Then our security people switched spots with another security person, who sat right next to me. She was pretty militant about her job, she soon made clear. I used my camera phone only discretely & sneakily, sort of like that uptight woman in the film Trading Places who sprays perfume on the guy next to her at the police station while pretending to be doing nothing. When Edge was about to start, this security woman told us (when I asked) that we would be allowed up only AFTER this song. The song started, the other sections (to our left) immediately piled up at the stage, and we ran up. Right away, she pulled us back. I argued with her, holding my temper despite the fact that our area (the right third) of the stage was completely empty, while the other side was full of fans. She insisted that SHE made the rules for HER section & that other security staff people were responsible for THEIR sections.

I was furious – why would I pay for those seats if I could not participate in the walk – and why leave that whole part of the stage empty when others who paid what we paid were getting favorable treatment, just because they had lucked out with more docile security people? She & I went back & forth like this several times, with me attempting to be nice while conveying the absurdity of this situation & explaining that the Edgewalk is something Stevie always does to connect with her fans - in other words, it was not just an attempt by me to get close to a rock star who wanted fans kept at a distance.

Finally giving up on banging my head against this wall of a human being, I walked back to Shellie & told her that we would rush the stage once Stevie got to our area for the walk – even if it meant we’d get thrown out before “Love Is”. To add insult to injury, an audience member came from the far left side, stood at our part of the stage, & turned to us with a big grin. Great, now we were losing our own ground to people who were defecting from the lenient security areas. For those minutes I did not enjoy Edge & kept saying to Shellie how angry I was – I could understand if the policy were consistent, but this was bull.

When the actual Edgewalk started, a few people from our section rushed up. We followed, hesitantly, and looked to our dear security person for approval (Stevie was way at the other end & we did not want to get pulled away too soon – our plan had been to rush at the exact moment Stevie was near us). The security woman now just stared off into the crowd, pretending not to see anything that was happening. Smart move, if a little late.

Long story less-long, I got to grasp hands with Stevie again, thank her, & tell her I loved her. (How original. Sue me. My mood had gone from very dark to gleeful in a flash.) This was the first time where I felt that she lingered for a moment to make eye contact with me, so that was a special moment. I also got a smile from Lori (yes, I noticed her face, even if the camera guys apparently did not).

Stevie has definitely lost weight. For those who care, she wore those black boots with the heels throughout the night & I did not notice her having any problems with the dread falling leg warmers. At the end of “Stand Back”, she announced that she has had the red shawl since 1976. Yeah, Stevie fans will applaud anything.

As I have mentioned here in the past, I am a weirdo magnet, especially if not only at Stevie shows. During the opening act, one interesting woman was screaming from several rows back that she loves Michael Grimm. For reasons we may never fathom, our security guy (this was before they switched) let her come up, stand right against my side, & scream (almost in my ear!) at the stage between songs that she loves him & is his biggest fan & even voted for him to win on “America’s Got Talent”. (Yes, she apparently thought she was the deciding vote for this national show. Clearly I was in the presence of greatness.) Michael stopped, looked at her, & then said nothing – just went on to play another song.:laugh: At the end of his set she made her way back to the front (like I said, security was unreasonably strict only for most of us) & tried to demand that the crew get her an autograph from him because she voted for him on AGT. Fail.

At the end of Stevie’ set, another woman, right next to me, demanded one of the song lists from the crew. Rather than take no for an answer, she called the crew names & then laughingly said that she had cancer (so that she could get a list), smirking at me & Shellie. WTH is wrong with people?

Stevie’s comments about hating the picture-taking came right after she made a point to welcome a guy who had arrived in a wheelchair for that section. She wanted to make sure he was “comfy,” & that the rest of us in the audience were, too. She then said that she wanted the people right there to stop holding cameras up at her while she’s singing because this “throws her off” the words to her songs. She explained how it’s like being filmed while unwrapping gifts on your birthday or something to that effect. Some people clapped. Then she made an awkward transition to “Sorcerer” by saying that this is now how she feels, tired, thirsty, & miserable.

After “Stand Back”, Stevie referred to terrible winds last night at Sturgis. She said she was sure the whole stage would fall over & blow away. Later, after “Rhiannon”, she said she now realizes she kind of misses performing with all the wind from last night.

Now a few thoughts about some of the songs…

Stand Back – I am NOT sick of this as the opener. SO much better than OTR or SDMHA or “Enchanted”.

Secret Love – Unless I missed it, she did not do most of the annoying mime moves. Thank you, whoever has been reading the Ledge & redirecting her in this department.

Rhiannon – I can’t specify what’s different about the mix this time, but it sounded far better tonight than on the last few tours.

Leather and Lace – Decent. The voice teacher sounds a little like George Michael, I think. Then again, the sound was not great, so maybe he sounds like Tiny Tim? Stevie said his mom was in the audience.

Landslide – Gave the old intro about her dad thinking the song is about him. During the song they played family photos & clips from the “Sometimes It’s a Bitch” video.

Love Is – I’ve never been a fan of the song, but she sang it beautifully tonight.

Moonlight – Much better live than I expected. Vocal sounded more nuanced & less hoarse than at the Wiltern or Red Rocks, if Youtube gives any indication.

Soldier’s Angel – This blew everybody away. THE song of the tour. One of the best live vocals I have ever heard from her. She really gave it her all. Lindsey's absence hurt the song not a bit. I’ll be shocked & disappointed if she drops this one from her set. The screen showed photos of soldiers’ graves & coffins draped with the American flag. Afterwards, she asked fans to donate at least five bucks to USO or another charity to help soldiers.

That’s it for now. Thanks for a fun night, Stevie. Your voice alone was worth the price of admission tonight. Your beauty & charm make up for the aggravation of crazy security.

RT @KMB921: Stevie Nicks just called out these 3 people in the audience: "please dont film me its so distracting & rude". // um omg?

And Betty Buckley tweeted this: (yeah, she's the mom from Eight is Enough!)

At Stevie Nicks concert-4th row center! Ticket- bday gift from my wonderful asst. of 11 yrs, Cathy B.! Thank U so much, Cathy! Can't wait!

Jake is there - freaking out that his Row C seats are actually front row - I'm sure we'll get a full report from him later.

Livia, i am so freaked out that you posted this tonight. After the concert I was just at IHOP discussing Carrie with Shellie & neither of us could remember Betty Buckley's name. "I remember my prom..."

Stevie....LET.IT.DIE already. LOL

I'm so happy that Jake is front row! He's going to get his Stevie moment, I hope. :blob1:

Thanks, Christy, I did, but I had to fight for it. Don’t mess with TX!

Can you say "messed up"? lol

I agree, Nancy. It's my least favorite track on the album. I gave it a chance - the footage from Red Rocks sounded decent on YouTube, so I was hopeful - but it was a mess tonight. Of course, she said before AND after the performance that she was 17 when she wrote it. She even announced that this is an amazing feat for such a young age because this song is so full of complexities.

She said this?? After lambasting Brittney Spears in an interview, when the reporter mentioned that Brittney complained to the audience about her back or knee pain? I believe Stevie's exact words were "You do not tell the audience about your dumbass problems!!"

In any case this doesn't bode well for her next show, which is tonight? Yikes! I hope she doesn't get sick before she comes to NY.

Noooooo!! I can't believe this! I love In Your Dreams, one of the best tracks on the album I think, and so was so thrilled to see her keep it in.For ayone who was there, how was the crowd reaction to it at the opening show? I thought it would really work live, no?

Replaced with Landslide as well. Now asmuch as Ilove that song, and I really do, I think it's time to give it a rest for a while!

Objectively, I think adding Landslide in was a good call. When people go to a Stevie Nicks concert, they expect to hear "Landslide." Heck, "Landslide" is probably the reason why half of those people go to a Stevie Nicks concert.
For Stevie's sake, though, I wish they'd dropped "Sorcerer" instead. She was so enthusiastic about playing her new songs...

Yeah, I'd have no problem dropping Sorcerer instead on In Your Dreams and repolacing it with Landslide.

The general audience wants to hear Landslide but dropping a new song isn't a smart move imo especially one as catchy as IYD. But hey, she's still out there and I for one am happy about that.

I have never had a good experience when it comes to Dallas shows. The crowd doesn't want to stand or they get drunk and obnoxious. TISL tour I had lit cigarettes thrown at me because my friends and I stood during Fall From Grace.

I was at that show and received similar treatment when I didn't sit down. That was one of the most hostile shows I've ever been to! One of the assholes behind me said, "take it off or sit down!". Horrible experience to say the least.

It was a great show. My first time seeing Stevie and my jadedness completely vanished the minute she came on stage. I was indifferent to her dropping IYD in favor of Landslide but if she had to drop a new song that would be the one I would have picked. Loved her telling off the guys filming her. Did not love sitting behind a woman with her hair teased up six inches above her head. Stevie sang the hell out of Soldiers Angel. Also she sounds much better in person than in those YouTube vids.

I don't mind the addition of Landslide so much, because, as nice of a fresh of breath air it was for us when we heard it wasn't played at Red Rocks... like a lot of others have said, a lot of people would be really disappointed not to hear the song, so I completely understand her feeling the need to put it back in.

That being said, I don't think anyone is dying to hear Sorcerer, but we WOULD like to hear the new songs played, so I agree that she could have taken that out instead of In Your Dreams (which is just so much fun).

I could of dealt with Rock and Roll cover. She did it better then Led Zep.I never cared about their version,But I do love "Stairway".Anyway If she running againt the 11pm cut off.She should get out on stage alittle earlier.have the opener sing for no more then 30 minutes.

This is unfortunate. However, maybe it's only an effort to mix up the set from time to time, and give each location a slightly different show.

Agreed. It's ashame it might not be coming back. I think it would be a great first encore.

The only song I would consider dropping from the show (even though none should be) would be Ghosts are Gone. Just not a favorite.

I have been smitten with Soldier's Angel now. Mesmorized. I absolutely love this song now.

Completely agreed. Sorcerer seems a little misplaced in the set list, I think.

GoldDustWoman22
08-13-2011, 01:58 PM
OK this may make absolutely no sense but I remember an interview talking about the tour with Rod Stewart and she said she didn't want to perform any of the new songs live because she didn't want people to video them and put them on youtube before the album was released. I was thinking maybe "In Your Dreams" might be the next single and she doesn't want people to hear it yet. But then that doesn't make sense does it because wouldn't she want to promote it:confused:?

I totally understand and respect her putting "Landslide" back in the setlist. I'm just confused because she said she was so excited to perform these new tracks from her album, And I think I can say that everyone here knows and loves the album. But obviously there are fans who aren't familiar with the songs and I think IYD would be a great way to get everyone into it:nod: and should be put at the beginning of the set:)

belladonnadream

I agree~ I LOVE New Orleans~ I love that she's doing so many new songs but really think she should have included that....

Completely agreed. Sorcerer seems a little misplaced in the set list, I think.

Yes, I agree, Stevie just does not seem to want to give up "Sorcerer", maybe because it on her "Crystal Visions...Very best of" or part of her "Lady From The Mountain" songs.

If she's going to drop a new song, I personally would like it to be "Secret Love" instead of "In Your Dreams". SL is one of the least memorable Stevie songs Live In Concert...ever! It's a good enough album track, but not great for the stage. I don't begrudge Stevie putting back in "Landslide" - there was a lot of bemoaning from concert goers leaving the concert at RR about Stevie not performing it. I was proud that she was brave enough to drop it, in lieu of the fact that it'll be back no doubt in a FM set sometime in the near future, but unfortunatley fans (mostly casual) will not let go of it for this short tour:cool:

No, I honestly think "Ghosts Are Gone" is the song to drop. I find it quite unengaging compared to the rest of the CD, and I think it's too busy a song to be introduced to an audience in a live setting who may not be familiar with it. That, plus I really love "Secret Love".

At 63, Stevie Nicks is still as beguiling and ethereal as ever. Opening Friday night’s show with “Stand Back,” she brazenly appeared before the packed audience at Grand Prairie’s Verizon Theatre, commanding the crowd to its feet as she twirled in a signature red shawl, a treasure from 1976, over her black lace dress and platform boots. Her hands covered in black motorcycle gloves, she pumped her fists in the air and drew every willing soul in for the night.

From the start, she told the audience she hoped to sing what she believed to be the best of her old and new songs. Ever the humble songstress, she quipped “I hope you agree,” as if she were a mere street performer tipping her top hat in gratitude.

Stevie Nicks
The tour bans all filming devices, and of course, as one might expect, a disobedient crowd in the orchestra pit held iPhones above their heads trying to capture the enigma in action. With a wonderful amount of tact and class, Nicks paused just once to gently implore the crowd not to film. Thankfully, they complied, some sheepishly taking their seats. The crowd for the most part was made up of an elder set, most of who chose to sit through or stand motionless during the better part of the show. (This reviewer couldn’t help but dance. Come on, Dallas.)

Conjuring the spirit of rock and roll from the get-go, Nicks herself didn’t stop dancing or pouring her heart out. Performing mostly her greatest hits, she gave rousing renditions of her best-known Fleetwood Mac tracks. With giant video screens behind her, she electrified the theater with “Rhiannon” and “Gold Dust Woman” and continued to weave pure magic with “Dreams” in between offering a couple of new songs, “Soldiers Angel” and “Secret Love” from her 2011 album In Your Dreams.

If you’re wondering whether or not Nicks still has the pipes, she does indeed. Her voice is slightly deeper now, but not damaged like her contemporaries Marianne Faithful or Debbie Harry. No, she sounds nothing like the whiskey-coated gravel pit voice boxes of Tom Waits or Bob Dylan. In fact, she sounds almost motherly and wise, which lends itself nicely to her show-stopping memorial “Landslide,” which serves as both a tribute to her father, and now, the audience.

As the night went on, Nicks paused to fill in the gaps between songs with stories about her past. Setting the audience back in time, her anecdotes were as fresh as first told, but with tender hindsight, as if the ghosts of her pasts are never too far from her mind.

Her onstage presence is still electric and poetic. Her spirit captivated the audience as she continued to twirl and dance across the stage, flailing her lace skirts like a true mystic. Closing the night with “Edge of Seventeen,” she appeared in a white lace prairie dress to rock us one more time. Appearing for a single song encore, she left the crowd with the ballad “Love Is,” noting that it’s always been important for her “to leave with a kiss goodnight.” When she was finished, she blew kisses to the audience before her final bow with the embodiment of a youthful spirit and the timeless grace of a legend.

Thanks for the great review, Jake. Glad you had your moment, despite the idiot security lady.

I'm also glad I already turned off the red beam on the lens side of my new camera (which would normally glow while focusing). I've never been a filmer, but I always take pics.

I can understand why Stevie got pissed at those obnoxious fans. The nightly jumbotron camera people filming is one thing, but having people use you as a backdrop for their souvenir photos - waving their arms around, etc., not paying attention to the show whatsoever, and ruining it for everyone around them as well, is so NOT cool...Johnette Napolitano is the same way. I once saw her in a TINY venue and a couple girls up front were snapping photos. She asked them to please stop, and to just enjoy the moment, "be HERE with the rest of us."

I agree if that's what the people were doing. You're right. Stevie wouldn't have been the only one distracted by such shenanigans.

But I hope she never goes off on someone who is quietly taking pictures -- without flash -- because she thinks they might be filming her, I would find that offensive and very hurtful. Michele

I was not knocked out by Love Is on the TISL album but here recently she has transformed this song into exactly what she had invisioned....the third ballad. It has evolved into a masterpiece. She is putting everything she has (emotional) into this song. She is really stepping up to the plate, this album must really mean everthing to her.

I really enjoy her latest solo record so it was nice to hear so many of those songs in the set.
Right after Dreams she fusses and the front section for just standing there and filming her. But she
didn't say anything about audio recording so I just kept on going ; )
Enjoy the show!

Now that I am home, I'll try to recap the entire experience.

Friday morning, I got up at 7:30, dressed, kissed Tom and Kiwi goodbye and set out on my pilgrimage. This was my 4th time to see Stevie in concert. The first time was in 1998 for the Enchanted tour. Tom went with me that time. I also saw her in 2001 and with Fleetwood Mac in 2003. I have skipped her last few 'Greatest Hits' tours in favor of waiting for a new album. I'm so glad I did.
As I hit the road, I pulled up on my iPod an interview Stevie did with Jim Ladd of KLOS about a week ago. The interview was 3.5 hours long, so it was almost long enough for the entire drive. It was recorded between midnight and 3am LA time, and you can tell. This was the perfect way to get me ready for the show. Jim always asks the good questions. There were none of the regular 'What was it like being in a band with your ex?' or 'How many times did you go to rehab?' questions. Stevie and Jim had a great, freewheeling conversation about the new album, songwriting, performing, soldiers...you name it. For those of you who think Stevie is all airy-fairy, you should listen to this. She gets very profound in places, and also very funny.
I hit Grand Prairie around 2:30 and go directly to the Verizon to pick up my ticket. I was hoping there would be some last minute ticket drop, but it was not to be. I drove to my sister's apartment. I had just enough time to catch up with her, while she got ready for work. I had planned on napping and driving straight to the show, but Nache let me know she would be tending bar. I decided it would be rude of me not to visit her at work. I showered, changed and followed her to the restaurant. I dined on crab cakes and a cosmopolitan. I was going to teach her to make me a Stevie Nicks martini, but she was kinda busy. It's all good, as she made a mean cosmo.
Time to go to the show. I drive back to Verizon, and realize...I did not bring any cash with me on this trip! The parking attendants do not accept credit cards. I have never used an ATM with my card and have no idea what my PIN is. I call the credit card company hoping for some help. No dice, they can't give PINs out over the phone. I call Tom, he has no suggestions that are feasible. I drive around and see that there is a baseball game going on at the ballpark across the street from Verizon. I drive over there, and find out there is no charge for parking. I'll have to hoof it, but I park and walk over to Verizon. I leave my camera in the car (which turns out to be a blessing)
I stand in line at the souvenir stand, and see this beautiful young girl dressed in Stevie finery. She graciously allowed me to take a pic. Armed with my shirt, baseball cap and coffee mug I take my seat, WAY in the back. I don't care, I have an excellent center view.
Before the show starts, Tom calls to check on my parking dilemma. I give him the lowdown, and he replies 'What if the game gets out first? Do you think your car will be locked in the parking lot?' Of course, I hadn't thought of that. And that's when the lights dim, and Michael Grimm takes the stage. Well, this simply will not do. I can't be worried about my car while Stevie is on stage. I'l never be able to concentrate. I grab my stuff, race down to the souvenir stand again, find someone in line, and offer to pay for her $35 shirt if she'll give me a $20 bill for my parking. She agrees. I FLY to my car (in the Texas heat) drive it back to Verizon and get parked properly. I run back inside just as Grimm wraps up his set. I am SWEATING, and thirsty, but I dare not leave my seat again.
Ok, before Stevie takes the stage, an side for the uninitiated: Stevie Nicks is my religion, and this is not an exaggeration. So, going to a concert is like a Baptist at a Tent Revival. Again, that's not an exaggeration. this was a religious experience for me.
The lights dimmed, and the crowd started cheering. The Black Eyed Peas song 'I've got a feeling' played as the band took their stations. Then The lights came up and a familiar riff filled the air. There stood Stevie Nicks, draped in a beautiful red shawl from 1976, and she launched into Stand Back. I was on my feet immediately, screaming, singing, dancing, and tearing up a little. I forget my sweat, and my thirst. From the get go, she was on FIRE. I think that song is the perfect opener, as it really gets the crowd going.
Stevie is very chatty all night, and you can tell she was very excited about bringing new songs to the crowd. At first, I thought it was rude that the audience sat through the old songs, but then I realized, most of those attending probably haven't heard them yet. Even seated, the response to the new songs was great. (one thing about being in the nosebleeds, I stood up all night and nobody cared)
As she wrapped up the song, she kindly asked the people in the audience not to film her. The crowd roared with approval. Cameras were prohibited, and there were signs everywhere. I'm the first to tell you that I watch bootleg Youtube videos, but I think an artist has a right to ask people not to film them.
I have not been a fan of Secret Love live, I keep thinking it's in the wrong key or something, it just loses some of the drama. However she really brought it up a notch. I enjoyed it a lot. (take THAT Anthony Lower).
Dreams and Sorcerer were really good. She hit some of the high notes on Dreams, and really sold it. Say what you want, Stevie was def. not phoning it in.
Nest up was another new song. I think Moonlight is a great song from the album, I just don't know how well it translates to stage. It's a mid-tempo number with a great story, but no big dramatic stage moments. If there was a weak spot in the show, I would have to say this was it.
Stevie left the stage and a familiar, spooky musical interlude began. I knew what was next: Gold Dust Woman. This is the part of the show where my hands are raised and I am speaking in tongues, (see? Tent Revival) Stevie took this song to it's spooky depths, the vamp at the end was amazing.
When it was over, Stevie began to talk about her time at Walter Reed visiting wounded soldiers. She was very passionate and serious, so of course some drunks in the cheap seats began shouting 'I LOVE YOU STEVIE' as she was trying to speak. It was the rudest thing about the night. Even so, when Stevie began to sing Soldier's Angel, the crowd was transfixed. I was especially moved, and thinking about my friend Brad Burns, who just began an 18 month tour of duty. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed the ovation was as moving as the song.
Annabelle Lee: I love this song. I hope it becomes a concert staple. People run hot and cold on it live, but I think it was great.
The song ends, and Stevie begins to talk about the next song. I know immediately what song it is. I pick up my phone and dial Anthony Lower just as the song starts. This was my Come to Jesus moment. As Stevie began to sing For What It's Worth, I look at the phone in my hand, knowing Anthony is listening, and how special he is to me, and how much this song means to us, I fall down into my seat, crying uncontrollably. I can't even tell you how much that song encapsulates how much Anthony means to me. I was going to talk to him a bit at the end of the song, but I couldn't.
And now for a piano interlude. If you know your Stevie Nicks lore, you know what happens next. Rhiannon has come! Stevie has it all: Great vocals, batwing sleeves, and beautiful choreography. The whole crowd was up for this one!
Now, at Red Rocks, Stevie had performed another new song, In Your Dreams. This night she dropped in favor of the crowd pleasing Landslide. I would have preferred the newer song, but Landslide is Stevie's Amazing Grace. She wasn't so much performing it, as leading the congregation in song. She held the entire theater in the palm of her hand.
Stevie really got busy and sold Ghosts are Gone. I can tell she loves performing this, and it is great on stage. Unfortunately it's too new for the casual fan, she really had to work to get the crowd on their feet and it was only the grist few rows that did.
After the band intros, Stevie brought out her vocal coach for a treat. I haven't heard Leather and Lace live, ever, so this was very special.
And of course, Edge of Seventeen. I have nothing to recap here as I was WAY to busy singing along (loudly) and dancing. Do you know how hard it is to spin between rows of seats????
In 2003, Fleetwood Mac closed the Lubbock show without an encore. I was so afraid that would happen here, but Stevie did not disappoint. The couple right in front of me, a young man and his girlfriend/wife were obviously on a date night, holding hands and hugging all night, trying to be oblivious to the screaming, singing, dancing gay man behind them. They never said a cross thing to me, so as Stevie closed the show with her beautiful ballad, Love Is, I sat down and let those two have that moment. (Betty Buckley was in the audience, I hope she decides to cover a Stevie tune like Love Is on her next album)
As the lights came up, a lady sitting next to me, sarcastically (but playfully) asked me why I didn't enjoy the show more. I laughed as she asked me how in the worked I knew how to sing along to every song, even the things that were different than on the albums. I just shrugged and replied 'I've had YEARS of practice.'

This morning I got up and left Dallas about 9am. It was raining most of the morning, as I listened to In Your Dreams on constant repeat, as I mentally began to compose this post. Just as I was about to hit Eastland, TX, I got a flat. I pulled over to fix the flat. I mean people get flat tires all the time right? I could fix this on my own without going into 'Pierce The Toast' mode (if you don't know what that is, rent The Birdcage). The tire and most of the equipment came out of the trunk with ease. Everything, except the jack. It just would not come out. I spent 20 minutes or more trying to get that stupid jack out, all the while taking breaks to try and wave down cars. I was veering very close to 'Toast' territory. Finally, Strapping Young Matt (or SYM) pulled over in his toyota, and offered assistance. Of course, he got the jack out in no time, and with a little help from SYM, I was back on the road.

30 hours and 750 miles later, I am back at home, grateful for the experience. I look over this and it seems like so much less than what it was, but it truly was an Enchanting evening. Stevie recharged the batteries of my soul...

I can understand why Stevie got pissed at those obnoxious fans. The nightly jumbotron camera people filming is one thing, but having people use you as a backdrop for their souvenir photos - waving their arms around, etc., not paying attention to the show whatsoever, and ruining it for everyone around them as well, is so NOT cool.

Agreed. Stevie is not the Statue of Liberty, people.

Download Vuze and Traders Little Helper. Vuze will take care of the the downloading of the torrent and you can rip it to .wav format with TLH. They are both very user friendly.
Or I can up them to Mediafire and post the links here but that's going to take longer.

With the camera you left in the car? Or with her camera?

Seriously though, I really enjoyed your recap of the trip, the show, and your ride home. I also enjoyed your version of this being a religious experience for you.

Only in the south could one wave their arms to flag down cars for roadside assistance. Up north people would just look at you like you might be a serial killer and drive right past you. Some would even show you their favorite finger.

I took the pic with my iPhone. The pic, along with other random shots from this trip, are on my fb page. Randy Ham if you want to friend me.

And Viv, it was horrible trying to flag someone down. I came away from that thinking 'No one who says Texans are friendly has ever had a flat tire on I-20.'
Luckily, not only did I get someone to help me, but he was cute too. ;)

Christopher, she really loves to sing this song with the audience. I have had the experience of singing this song with her looking directly at me which is incredible, I have to say!:]

This is exactly how I am. I almost don't want to bring anyone with me because I feel bad they want to dance and rock out and I am still practically hypnotized.

I know it's really hard, haha. Very serious business ;)

I'm extremely disappointed Stevie dropped In Your Dreams from the set list. I'm dumbfounded as to the reasons why.

It's one of her most peppy songs in recent years.
It has a fun energy and it's very accessible.
It has the most potential to be a single - it's much more catchy that Secret Love!
It's the title track to her album!
It's the name of the tour!

Of all the songs she could have dropped, she chose that one??? Will it come back? (only...In Our Dreams)

I can only hope that a DVD/CD of the Wilton show is released. At least we'll have that song on there live for posterity.

The only new song I would not miss live is The Ghosts Are Gone; So strange...musically generic.

I would love her to perform Wide Saragasso Sea and You May Be The One. Landslide can fall off the cliff.

Just copy and paste it to your computer. I get bored with the same pics too quickly. It will be gone by tonight. I don't know who designed this but I agree it's nice. Thank you for the compliment.

Stevie Nicks put her 63-year-old heart and soul into Friday night’s concert at Verizon Theatre and let everyone know she’s still rock royalty. She was talkative for a change and dished up far more stage patter than usual, showing herself at times to be both charismatic and vulnerable. Best of all, she sang like an angel for two hours and left the near-capacity crowd satisfied and happy.

One of my favorite moments happened after the first song when Nicks looked out into the crowd gathered up front and pointed out several people — “you and you and you and you” — who were recording the show. She asked them to shut off their video cameras, which were making her self-conscious and forgetful. Nicks suggested the vid-crazy fans just enjoy the show with their own eyes and ears and forget about snagging YouTube material for once. That earned her a big hand from the crowd. (The people she chastised put their cameras away briefly, but I noticed later on some were still discreetly filming the show.)

As usual, Verizon was a great venue — the sound, lights, and staging were all excellent.

Here are a couple of YouTube videos probably posted by some of those same scolded shutterbugs:

I would guess these were NOT recorded by those people up in the front because these videos were taped off of the big screen. Ususally it's the people sitting far away that will focus on the screens to get the clear shots. If you are standing below her the end result would look better than these IMO.

It's disappointing, but I understand if her voice just isn't up to it anymore. I don't remember her doing much of a wail on Edge of Seventeen either.

well I know there hasn't been a full fledged WAIL for awhile, but usually she ad-libs SOMETHING right there, this was the 1st performance I've seen where she didn't attempt it. Oh well, she still sounds good on the rest of the song :)

That is only a short clip of GDW. The real "wail" comes in later. And she did change it midway thru unleashed, from a long drawn out continuous sound to what she does now.

Thanks Jake for this very lively and Jake-y review of the night. An enjoyable read. Ofcourse SA suffered alittle from abscence of LB, but from the boots I've heard she does a real impressive job on it.

I'm glad you had your Stevie-high again!

Now I'm praying for a UK lindseyhigh in december.....

Thanks, where are you seeing him?

I was not at the Wiltern show, but Lindsey's absence did not seem to hurt SA one bit. If anything, those two onstage together in such a minimalist/intimate song can distract from the song, I imagine - the experience could easily end up being about Stevie interacting with Lindsey & all that baggage, rather than about Stevie telling about Walter Reed. So I was perfectly happy to see Stevie do this one with Waddy.
