View Full Version : An Email from the person who won the "mother load"

I know there have been a couple people on this board and probably on 7W that have emailed the man who won all those tapes on ebay a few months back.

On a whim, I emailed him a couple of weeks ago and he responded to me....who knows why....

I asked him for permission to post his reply to me and he just wrote me back and said yes please, as I guess he is still getting emails.

If anyone is a member of 7W could you post this over there too?

Whether we agree with what he did or not, or whether he really did it, I don't know, but he seems sincere so I'm thinking this is the right thing to do....so this starts with my email to him:

Dear cxxxxxx, (named deleted)

I hope you haven't been overly bombarded by desperate Stevie Nicks fans concerning the tapes that you won a while back. If so, I apologize. I belong to a group of fans who would be willing to do most anything for copies of those tapes. Is there any amount of money, or anything you would like in trade, just for copies?? Again, I apologize for intruding on your privacy, but we are all so disappointed that we may never have the chance to hear these treasures. Sincerely and with much hope, Karen

KAREN: I've been silent to email requests/inquiries about the tapes until this email. But the emails keep coming...

I have two cousins who are musicians and have won multiple grammys. Sometimes, their work would get out before they were finished with it, or in spite of the fact that they didn't want it out but kept private--for all kinds of various reasons. As artists, these unreleased songs getting out sometimes caused a lot of problems for them, and for other people involved in the recordings. Even legal or personal problems. There are a zillion people involved in writing/recording/producing/mixing/publishing even one song.

I understand, and I get, the curiosity that comes with wanting to hear/see new art from an artist I really like or admire. Sometimes it's even a burning curiosity and admiration. I like Stevie Nicks's writing and melodies, but I think I've bought maybe one record of hers in my life---and it was Fleetwood Mac. I've since learned that many of her music's most passionate fans are really after certain unreleased songs, or differing versions, some of which supposedly are on these tapes. And I get that.

But my hope is that those passionate about her music will also be just as passionate about her---or at least passionate enough to let her have some say in what she created and for whatever reason has not decided to release. I don't know her, and I've never met her, but I gave the tapes back to her. I wasn't paid for them. I didn't listen to them or copy them, so I don't even know for sure what's on them, only what was written on the labels.

While I can tell this will be extremely disappointing to all the people who've been contacting me to buy/copy the tapes, I hope this will cause some people to at least pause and think not only about the songs, but just as much about the creator of the songs--who in the future I feel certain will display, and create, plenty of art for people to enjoy.

Respectfully,
Cxxxxxx

I then wrote him a long explaination about how much this stuff means to us and how we don't sell it and so on and offered to buy him her new album....

KAREN: Thank you for taking the time to explain all of that to me. I do appreciate it, and I can tell just how much meaning Stevie Nicks's songs have to you from reading your email. Thank you also for your kind words and for offering to get me her new record. I actually bought it on iTunes right before getting your email, and am on my second listen now. You totally have my permission to share that info re: returning the tapes with the fans you know---it would actually help me, so thank you!--Cxxxxxx

For what it's worth.....

Probably not a popular thought, but I respect him for giving the tapes back to her. Like he says, she deserves a say on what happens to her work.

So did he just mail them to her?

I respect what he did. It's comforting to know that the tapes aren't being hoarded somewhere by some greedy fan or collector, but rather, essentially, back where they belong. That is, if they can't be with us for all to hear

Whatever, I REALLY wanted to hear that stuff dammit.

Okay.... im sorry if this question is annoying, so please excuse my stupidity(;
But could someone please explain this tape business? I came to the Ledge a bit late so I'm not exactly sure about what ya'll are talking about... (: What were on these special tapes that everyone wanted so badly?

Thank you(:

I never understood all the madness. I would think though if her people really wanted these tapes back, wouldn't they police Ebay themselves and OUTBID you all for them? Gawd knows Stevie has the money smh. In the end I don't understand the stoning of someone who won something they bought, ever. With their money.

Me neither. The guy doesn't even listen to Stevie, he just wants to deprive her fans? He may or may not have sent the tapes to Stevie, but the whole thing comes across as incredibly self-righteous.

I was deeply upset when I heard about the outcome of this situation and although it did not turn out the way most of us would have liked I totally respect the winner's decision. Quite frankly we should blame ourselves for not being more organized and making sure we won the bid. Let's just try to make sure this never happens again given the opportunity.

Yup, sorry, I'm w/ Josh on this one. I would TOTALLY go for it if he were even a "passing fan" but he seems on the fence about her and her work, so how would he even KNOW that these were special? Not already in the rounds if he weren't a fan. I want really to belive that there are people that do this kind of stuff for the goodness of good like another poster mentioned, (like the person that buys all the BN prints to give back to Stevie) but I don't believe this to be the case. And not being re-paid.
HWW is ON his s%^& when it gets posted on ebay. The Cocteau Twins are all over any boot merch on Ebay, I'm just saying if Stevie thought there was a chance in hell of recapturing all this owrk out there, she'd invest a bit more time. Close the auctions at a min like the above artists do.
Anyway, if it is true (and I think it was just the nicest most sincere "please leave me the hell alone") then more power to them, and my apologies, but I'm just not buying it.

Why would a non- fan buy the tapes only to return them to Stevie?? Random. Call me cynical.....

tabruns
08-09-2011, 05:19 PM
Why would he do it? Because of this:

"I have two cousins who are musicians and have won multiple grammys. There are a zillion people involved in writing/recording/producing/mixing/publishing even one song."

I think he explained his rationale fairly clearly. It does make me wonder though whether he normally tries to obtain tapes of unreleased songs in order to return them to the artist. If he doesn't, and he's not that much of a Stevie Nicks fan, why do that in this particular case? Was this situation particularly unusual?

Neither do I. Otherwise, why isn't he out there buying up ALL the bootleg material that pops up on eBay and elsewhere by ANY artist? Weird.

And I gotta say, Stevie herself bears some responsibility for a lot of this stuff getting out.... a lot of it she just handed out to people, and a lot of it she seems to have not kept (or hired someone to keep) control of... For instance, why are her tapes in a storage unit belonging to Sara? Why weren't they in her home in Phoenix, at her mom's, or in some dedicated music vault? After all, this is HER livelihood at stake.... Just sayin'

Agreed..for someone that had tapes stolen way back when she and Fleetwood Mac were multi-platinum sellers you'd think she'd have learned by now.Back then she had the alibi of being naive and high as a kite ..she has neither now.

Sara's tapes were Sara's copies.

Now, I have them.

And she has stated to me that she's happy the songs are now circulated, especially "Mirror, Mirror". I'm sure Stevie has copies of them, just like all the other Rock A Little work tapes, which were ALL normal, every day old school Maxell cassettes from the Eighties/Nineties or (a very few) DATs.

These aren't Reels or Masters, but copies of songs onto plain old audio cassettes.

"Sharon's Tape" was just that: Sharon's tape, a copy of songs on a normal old cassette, left lying in a warehouse/storage locker/whatever.

The ORIGINAL eBay seller (not this Corbin entity) did not copy the tapes. I believe him. He sold me tapes that were paid for at large amounts. He also gave me a few tapes for being a good customer. He knows he could have made thousands more off of us had he made copies. He probably wishes he had now.

I don't think it's cynical to question the truthfulness of this person's response, because he doesn't appear invested or attached to this particular instance of artist's rights to .
If he really wanted to do good, he could have donated the money he spent on someone/something truly in need.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of examples of unreleased material on eBay. Is he buying up all of that as well? Why Stevie, when he doesn't even express any true interest in her and how did he even come across an auction that most Stevie fans weren't even aware of?
He's either scripted this reason for not sharing to deflect both requests and criticism or, he thought his investment and seemingly selfless gesture might inspire a personal response from Stevie in the form of a thank you.

I agree with you and was thinking the same exact thing! He probably just said that to get people off his or her back. In this economy unless the person is a millionaire with lots of time on their hands why would they simply return the tapes to Stevie? Also, if the person does not know Stevie then how will he get them to her? Sure maybe somebody like John Kinney (Nicksfix creator) could find a way but how do we know that the person he/she gives the tapes to will actually give them to Stevie without listening to them or copying them.? Sounds like a bunch of bunk to me.

So I could put some blank tapes on ebay and say they were Stevie demos and this guy would gladly shell out hundreds of dollars and then never even listen to them to see if I actually sold him what he bought? That's a very valid point.

And someone else brought up the question - why Stevie? There are tons of unreleased tapes and such on Ebay... if he doesn't care about her either way then why randomly choose to buy hers back, as opposed to an artist he is more familiar with? Does he do this with every bidding of unreleased stuff he comes upon?

Honestly, I think maybe he lied about that part. Maybe he is a Stevie fan and he just didn't want to say he was for whatever reason (probably so his true motives weren't obvious), and he sent the tapes back to her, like someone else said, as an attempt to elicit a response in some way.

Either that or he's lying about everything.

That is how people are that practically LIVE on the Internet, especially some Ledge people. Lets get over it and move on. Learn to "snipe" Ebay auctions, keep the discussions of bidding private and off the board, and next time you will all have a better shot at winning and not giving this douchbag the chance to ruin your day.

I just don't like the guy's email. Preachy, condescending and imo insincere.
What's relevant about whether he bought one or all of her records? Sounded like he was trying too hard to say :'i'm not a fan of hers,honest!!'..which is also irrelevant.
I mean it's not as if he was approached via email as 'hello super Stevie Nicks fan who won motherload of demo tapes' so why did he emphasise :don't know her, never met her, never bought her records-but-oh-wait-I have-her-latest-one..& oh I just mailed her all the tapes...
All in all-peculiar.

I think it sounds legit.
I know a few fans have asked Stevie about if she's mad that these are all circulating and she's said "She's over it" (essentially)
But that doesn't necessarily mean she is actually over it.

She may just say that to people so she doesn't "offend the fans" thats the impression I always got.

Maybe the guy wants to keep on the DL about who he actually is, and maybe he's directly "in contact" with Stevie - or works for her somewhere down the line.

So he bought them (maybe even with her money) but just doesn't want people knowing the connection.

Ok, I was teetering on the edge, being convinced that he may have done it to further his political career (put it on his good guy list) or sell it to make money for campaigning, meet or be acknowledged by Stevie, or knew somebody in Texas who knew her...
But today I "checked out" (I'm still not a stalker) his ebay buys/sells, just to make sure they don't show up and I see not only has he sold 2 guitars, both in the $2,000ish range, but he also just sold his copy of U2- 3 which was U2's first record and it fetched $2,000. That pushed me over to the don't believe it side. He's waiting for the right offer from the right person I think. He collects stuff and although I don't see much feedback from selling, you can find the stuff he's sold on the internet.

...you can find anything on the internet....

"Priest Of Nothing" - Take 1
“What was her name?” she said to him
And her friend said nothing for the longest time
Something like your name,
And her friend said nothing for the longest time
And she turned her head and she walked away
And as the Legend says:
"This time you won’t get away...”
Something like that
Poet… priest of nothing… legend
Poet… priest of nothing…
*
In trouble again for the wrong things...
I didn’t know him, he didn’t know me
There she goes again... Ooh, she says,
“Do you think that this could be the one?”
*
She sees no evil... She’s in love!
Speaks no evil... Well, she’s in love!
I don't think says anything to anyone
Ah ah...
*
Well, I thought that there was a connection
I didn't know why he didn't understand...
There she goes again!
She wants her freedom...
Well, I’m almost there
And I think it’s right...
She sees no evil... She's in love!
Speaks no evil... She's in love!
Well, I don’t think that they say anything to anyone
But you…
Well, I need somewhere to go
I need somewhere...
*
Ooh, I feel at least that I have the right
To say at least that I miss you...
Well, just remember when you are alone
That it is good what you do...
But there she goes again!
She thinks that this time
Well, this might be the one!*
She sees no evil, she’s in love...
Well, I don’t think that she says anything to anyone
But you...
Well, I need somewhere to go
Well, I need somewhere…
*
And her friend put her head down on the table
And she cried, and she said,
“Well… can he play?”
Yes, he can!
She said, "Well, can he play?"
Oh, yes, he can!
My friend said, "Can he play?"
And she said, "Yes, he can!"
Well, can I dance with this man?
Yes, I can!!
Ooh, can he play?
I said, "Yes, he can!"
Can he play?
Well, well, yes, he can!
I know...
Can he play?
And I think, "Yes, he can..."

You mean to tell me a guy spends hundreds and hundreds of dollars on these tapes on eBay just for the sole purpose of doing "good" and returning them to Stevie, whom he says he does not know at all, or in whose music he seems to have no real interest?

I buy none of it.

Same here. Something smells rotten about this this story. And it's not nag champa!

mike probably remembers. It seems like it was between 400-600$ The transaction is gone now because he was able to have the positive feedback from the seller deleted somehow...

Yeah, mike, I remember that now. I had written everything in a post and then decided to delete it after our conversation. So he bought the BN nicks CD and then tells me he has only ever bought one album and it was of FM.
I think he has plans. Weird that he bought stereo equipment after he won those tapes. It's also weird that he only responded to me after emails from several people...

This "guy" either works for Stevie or is a rabid fan like the rest of us and is lying about why he bought the tapes. There's no way in hell he bought the tapes to return them back to Stevie out of the goodness of his heart. That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. And like another poster pointed out, why would he do this for an artist he doesn't even listen to? And then say that he bought her new album on iTunes and was "giving it a second listen?" No way. This guy is a Ledgie! :p:laugh:

Look at the other auctions he has won...doesn't seem like someone buying this kind of stuff to "return" them to the rightful owners. Sorry but I bet my house that he's lying through his teeth. Oh well...

Why would someone who is not a big Stevie fan look up on ebay to see if there were any bootleg tapes of hers being auctioned off? They would have had to be looking for them to find them.

Sounds absurd. Must either be someone from Stevie's people, or a fan who doesn't want to share. But what a silly email.

Exactly!
