Is it a new interview?

It's 1:30 in the morning here... guess it's not quite so late on the West coast, but dang.

Yes, it's live, and she just called Aboeba Records the 'last record store' and she thinks the signing is 'going to be a riot, a good riot.'

I listen to this radio station everyday and no mention that she was going to be interviewed tonight, so Iguess I missed the first 20 minutes, and I have no way of recording this right now!

It does sound kind of husky, but I don't think she'd go back to smoking. Maybe because it's getting late? That happens to me.

I absolutely adore Jim Ladd. He gets some of the best interviews with her. <333

I agree, and I love Jim Ladd too! I love how he always seems to throw Stevie's songs into his theme nights...if it's a color theme, then he plays Gold Dust Woman, if it's a number theme, the Edge of 17.

That kills me about the Lindsey melody and lyric pills. I just decided that if I meet her at Amoeba, I will hand her a prescription pill bottle labeled, LINDSEY'S MELODY PILLS, and tell her to take 2 with her brandy. Do you think she would laugh?

"Miss Ghost" is a song by Don Henely, so I guess for some reason he thought it was about him.

I wish Stevie would have continued on the subject of the shared lyric with Angel (and, for that matter, Sweet Girl). Would love to hear what she has to say about the connection between them.

She sounds so tired now.

Also, if you want to help soldiers, donate to the USO. She has a charity but doesn't understand it, so don't send her money, send it to the USO.

Instead of just saying the above info., she had to throw in how it's not like when she and Lindsey joined FMac and they just handed them $200 a week. Then she said there are tax consequences. ilove how she personalized the most serious things and throws in a Lindsey story.

Waddy is great but LB will be sorely missed. Stevie says she was specifically invited to Sturgis to do "Soldiers Angel." I never liked the song until I saw it live at the Wiltern. Without LB I don't get it. He got through to me with his playing and reverent harmonizing. It just won't be the same...but I'm not knocking Wad.

So no one recorded the beginning of the show? Funny thing was, I was supposed to have been sleeping, but couldn't so I hit the sleep button on my clock radio which is always tuned to KLOS because I love Jim Ladd and he plays Stevie songs so often. You can imagine my surprise when I heard her voice! But it was about 20 minutes into the interview.

Jim: "How are your buddies in Fleetwod Mac doing?"

Stevie: "They're good. Lindsey's finished a record that is, I think, amazing. I think it's the best thing that he's ever done. And it's so interesting because last November when he came up to work on 'Soldier's Angel '- which is the last thing that we really did - we played him my record, and he played the Dave and Stevie world and Glen Ballard his record. So we listened to both records in a row. At the end, Lindsey was sitting on one side of me, I was in the middle and Glen was here, and Dave was walking around with his guitar around his neck. And Glen just jumped up and said, "Oh my god, you guys are on fire! You have both made an amazing record in the same year!" Of course, I'm going like "Please god, let me love this record." Because I'm sitting here next to Lindsey, he knows me so well.. if I don't love this record, I'm gonna go like "Well, I..." you know? And I swear to god I think that Lindsey like swallowed some melody pills and some lyrical pills, because all of a sudden along with his amazing bombastic guitar that he plays are these really beautiful words and beautiful melodies. I'm so very proud of him. So the Fleetwood Mac gang is fine. John's in Honolulu, Micks' in Maui . Lindsey here, getting ready to release this record and working on it. So you know, it's good. "

Thanks for the commentary and the links, everyone. I can't wait to listen to this. I totally agree that Jim Ladd is the best person ever to interview Stevie. Well, he and Molly Meldrum, but Jim has done sooo many, and he "gets" her, like we do.

Some more quotes.

Jim: "Why is fame for some people such a lonely business? Don Henley once wrote,'I don't konw why fortune smiles on some and let's the rest go free.' Explain that to me, from someone who is in your position of being very famous."

Stevie: "Well, okay, the good thing about me being famous is that .. I was almost 28 when I joined FLeetwood Mac. Lindsey was one year younger. We lived together as, really, as a married couple for five years, and we struggled. We built a life and we lived a kind of normal life. We did our music all night, and I was a waitress all day. We had bills to pay, and we had no money. So we knew who we were when we joined Fleetwood Mac. We knew that we would actually be okay if we ended up being just normal people, because we had to really fight to stay alive in this business until we actually joined Fleetwood Mac. I was always really glad about that because when people would say to me, 'Well, what if this doesnt work?' I would say, 'I'll just get another job.' I say that today: 'I'll just get another job. I'll go on the radio, I'll be an artist. I'll draw pictures. I'll do all the things that I'm not doing right now.'

I look at fame as.. it wasn't terrible for me. I never look at it as taking away my freedom. I think that fame, for some people, really is horrible. But I have to say, I mean, I think being a rock and roll star is great. I fly on a private plane, I stay in presidential suites, I drive in limousines - because I don't drive, really. You should be glad I don't drive. I was a good driver until 1978 when I let my drivers license go. I decided we were high and I didnt want to get in an accident and my whole fortune to go, so I just thought maybe driving was not a good idea. But I love my life. I love being famous. I love being able to walk into a restaurant and say, 'I'm Stevie Nicks. Can I get a table?' It's like, you know, why not? So all the people who hate being famous, I'm so sorry for them. The violins of the world are really playing for you in your 18 million dollar house. And if I could swear, I would swear right now and say really, ' ____ all of you, get a life.'"

Listening to her talk about Moonlight, I don't care that she was inspired by Twilight, because you can tell that at the end of the day, what she was really taken by was how she related to it and how it made her think of her own life. Which is what all of Stevie's songs come down to, anyway.

I've gotten a lot of it written down. I started out with just what was interesting to me, but later tonight I'll probably type it all up. I like to have a reference as well. I've been transcribing a lot of her radio interviews lately.

I don't care if Stevie was inspired by Twilight either. And I'm kind of proud that she has never once said a thing about "Jacob" and I'm 100% certain that when/if she does, it will be negative. So, it's all good.

This was such a looong, delicious interview though. That's too much of an undertaking. But I love the quotes you've already given us. Thank you.

That's one thing about the internet: I think it reduces the number of print interviews we get and that's somewhat distressing.

Many times I'll see a headline in the news and I'll click on it and it's not an article. It's a video. Now that close captioning is so common, they shouldn't just use it for tv shows. They should cc all video in the media.

The extended story of Moonlight:

"I go on the Fleetwood Mac tour in 2009. We do 83 shows, and we're ending up in Australia. We get to Melbourne - I get there the day before the band gets there, because I always go early to get with the new time. I'm at the Crown Plaza in Melbourne and I'm trying to stay up because that's what you do when you go to Australia. I go down to see a movie to keep me awake, and I see the second movie in the Twilight saga. There's almost nobody there, it's late, and I'm watching this movie. I'm very taken by what happens to the two characters in this story because it reminds me of something that happened to me. So I'm a little bit teary, and I'm philosophic, and I'm being really affected. I go to my room, and I'm really thinking about this.

The next day Fleetwood Mac comes in and we rent the Michael Jackson movie, we're trying to keep them up. We watch the Michael Jackson movie, which was amazing, and then Fleeetwood Mac goes off to bed. I tell my assistant and one of the promoters for the tour, 'I'm going back to see that movie... and I'd like you to come with me, but I'm going without you if you don't want to go. I'm going." So I went back and I watched it a second time. I went up to my room after it was over and I wrote an essay on fairy tales, and clandestine lovers, and beauty and the best, and who is the beauty and who the beast. It was five pages. It was kind of like something you'd write when you were in college, it was kind of covering all the bases of basic fairytales.

I then started thinking of this song I had written in probably 1977 that Lori and Sharon and I have sung and can sing to this day the whole thing at the piano. We just never recorded it, but it went out on a bunch of bootleg things, so my fans have heard it - it was called Lady From The Moutnains. And it's like, 'Some call her strange, lady from the mountains. And others say, she's not really real. Like a candle burns bright, and wants to burn faster. Well, maybe then at least she really feels.' This was about me. But I'm watching this movie about this girl named Bella and she's up in the mountains of Oregon or Washington or somewhere and it's the sea and it's the crashing ocean and it's this crazy story, and I'm thinking, 'Gosh, this could be about her, as well as it was about me.' And then the next verse to this song is, 'He loves her but he loves his life alone as well, but does he know the road, all the reasons why? If he leaves her, he'll be losing the chance to stay alive. The candle burns bright, then the candle dies.' This was written about Lindsey; however, this could so totally have been written about Edward, the vampire. So I'm struck by this. I write this essay, and there's a part of it that I'm writing about Bella, and it says, 'She's lonely, she's lost, she's disconnected. She finds no comfort in her surroundings. Beautiful, insecure, she's misdirected. She goes from situation to situation like a ghost.' And all of a sudden these three verses start to go together. And I'm thinking, 'This is making this ancient tale right here in front of me.'

The next day we play Melbourne and then we go onto Brisbane, and there's a piano in the hotel, in my room. I go to the piano and I sit down and I start thinking about Lindsey and I in so many ways.. and I start thinking about how Bella is in love with a vampire who is a noble and great man, just like the beast in Beauty and the Beast was a noble and great beast, but he was still a monster, and Edward is still a monster. But that doesn't make the love any less deep, even though it is impossible. So I start to write this chorus and it says, 'Strange, she runs from the ones she cant keep up with. She runs with the vampires.' And I run with the rockstars. 'Strange, he slows down, he's so desperate to stop her.' Because he doesn't want her to hurt, he doesn't want her to be hurt. 'Strange, they both run from the one who hunts them.' Who is the crazy vampire thats after both of them. 'They both drop to the forest floor, frozen.'

I sit at the piano and I play this song all the way through. I ask Karen, 'Get me the camera and put it on video because we need to record this.' So we recorded it. When it was done, I got up from the piano, and I said to my sweet assistant who has been in my life for like 22 years, 'I'm ready to make a record now, Karen. I'm ready. I don't care what anybody says. They can all go, like, jump off a lake. I am ready to make a record.'"

So, how does this amorphous "Fleetwood Mac" watch a movie together? Do they rent a media room in the hotel or to do they all get on a king size bed together with a big bucket of popcorn? How does it work?

What college would that be? I'm thinking it doesn't rate very high on the U. S. News and World Report polls.

Of course, I'm being silly, because I did write a paper on Sonny Bono when I was in college.

Stevie: People will get in your way.

Jim: Why do you think that is? I mean, maybe it's even people with good intentions. But rather than encouragine one, it seems like it's easier for people to go, 'Oh, she can't do that. Don't do that. I know better.'

Stevie: I think, in a way, they fear for you. I think they fear that you'll be hurt, and that then you won't want to do it anymore, you know? I don't know, I don't really know why. I know that people are terrified about the business, and it's very hard. I mean, if Lindsey and I moved here today, and we were 22 and tried to get a record deal... I don't know, you know? People go like, 'Well, who are you guys, and what is your music? Are you like texas rock a billy, or are you like folk? What are you, who are you?' That happened then also, but it would really happen now. Would we make it now? We would try, and we would be just as forceful as we were then. But would we actually be able to crawl to the top now? I don't know.

Jim: Plus, they'd take one look at you and they'd want to put you in some sort ofridiculous costume and have you do dance steps.

Stevie: Well, yeah. Of course, you know, I am not to be choreographed. That's why I'm a lead singer. I cannot do steps - I'm a free dancer. No, that would not work for me at all, and of course, that would just infuriate Mr. Buckingham. So that would never work. We would have to really figure out.. would we have gone on American Idol? Would we have moved to England and gone on the X Factor? Would we have done whatever it took?

Jim: Let me ask you: What do you think about that American Idol thing? What do you think about that?

Stevie: I think that a lot of people feel that it's the only way to be seen. Record deals are far and few between and even if you have a hit single or two, if you don't follow it up, they're gonna drop you. So you just are talking about living in fear. At least we have our money invested, we're okay. But these kids that are like travelling around in a van trying to sell their record on the internet.. it's tough.

Jim: What would happen if Bob Dylan were to try to come out today? You think he'd get a record deal?

Stevie: I don't think so. I think that they'd totally miss his... his poetry. They'd be going like, 'What?'

Jim: What a waste that would be. Just think of the waste.

Stevie: Let me tell you something: there are Bob Dylans out there, and there are Fleetwood Mac's, and there are Led Zeppelins, and there are The Who, and there are Jim Morrison and the doors. They're there. I have total belief that all those really talented kids are out there, but whether or not they'll ever see the light of day is another quesiton. And that is really scary.

This whole segment really struck me for some reason. I absolutely love the fact that she does have faith in my generation as far as music is concerned. She truly understands many people on a multitude of generations and I love her for it:angel:. I believe, like she does, that there are some BRILLIANT acts out there but because the music industry itself is so difficult to break into they don't get to see the light of day. When I think of not being able to have heard FM, or even Buckingham Nicks and seeing their brilliance it really depresses me:(. Especially to know that there are some wonderful people who deserve fame more than the famous.

As far as them getting a record deal today...

The music may be timeless but that doesn't mean that the industry is at state today where it would be realistic for them to break through. Mainstream radio etc is COMPLETELY different, the media is completely different, and the general public's expectations for performers is completely different.

Not to mention that... if Stevie and Lindsey were 22 today, would their music still sound like it did back then? Probably not, because they wouldn't have had the same influences. So you have to take that into consideration. With that in mind, maybe they would have a better chance at making it today because they would have wider appeal.

Going on a talent show is a whole different story.

That's true. When she said in the interview how the record industry might have a hard time putting their music into a genre, I wondered if she thought their music may have sounded the same. I personally think it may have sounded similar but I don't know if they would have succeeded or not. There are not many known duos today so I think that could've been unique to their name. However, considering the album they made in '73 wasn't a hit I don't know if they would've translated better to this generation or not. Of course you have to consider record company promotion and the new forms of media and everything like that as well. If their music was out today then yes they would have a wider appeal but would they be able to appeal to the mainstream and be popular enough to become a label mainstay?

I love love love that she has chosen to keep the Wiltern set list for her tour!

In the last part of the interview she mentioned how the Wiltern show was a showcase -- meaning she could to perform 8 new songs only within this context.

Then she talked about how Fleetwood Mac made the mistake of adding too many new songs in their Rumours set list... and it didn't go over well. She's mentioned this "lesson-learned" story several times before. I always thought it was a bunch of bull ****.

Clearly, with the Wilton show, she now sees that theory is a bunch of bull****. If they are good and well performed, new songs are well-received by the audience. The Wilton audience was obviously elated to hear her new songs. It was a great set list -- a set list that promotes the album, and gives a nod to ancient concert staples.

I couldn't imagine her hacking up that set list, cutting most of the new songs, and falling back on well-worn oldies. She severly under-estimated her fan base. I'm so glad she realized she can keep it fresh...and we're with her.

"[Ghosts are Gone] is about a relationship that was like, done. Over. Walked away. Never wanted to speak of it again. Like a ghost through the fog, like a silver shadow, like a golden rainbow. Gone. And even the ghosts are gone, the ghosts went with it. This was 'Don't call me. Don't talk to me. If you're walking across the street, I will absolutely cross the street to be as far away from you as I can.' Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."

I thought it was about Lindsey at first, but I don't think you could say her relationship with Lindsey has ever been so 'end of story' like that.

Now the 'ghost through the fog' line is even more confusing. Maybe she just likes it and it's not connected at all.

Haha I just think that back then the music was more of a movement that I would love to have been a part of. I still like some music today but I feel like everyone's attitude about music and what it means has changed.

Also about the whole "Ghosts are Gone"/Joe Walsh theory. I know a little bit about their relationship (they dated for three years, she met him in a hotel bar and sat on his lap etc.) but not all the details. Was there something big that happened?

So I sat down last night to listen to this interview...and I sat and I sat. Damn it's long. I couldn't get through the whole thing but so far it's amazing, so reminescent of the Jim Ladd interviews of days gone by. The part that really got me was the Walter Reed segment...but for some reason it always touches me when Stevie discusses her experiences with the soliders. But the way her voice got softer and softer as she recounted her first experience thee it was as if you could hear a pin drop in that studio...and Jim's segue into "Solider's Angel" was simply perfect. That moment reminded me so much of a Tusk era interview Stevie did (I have it on cassette somewhere) where she was discussing an interaction she had with a fan. About midway through she was starting to get that super serious and intense tone and her voice got real soft, just the way it did in this interview from this week. I was hanging on her every word and I'm pretty sure Jim was too. It just continues to amaze me how much Stevie has not changed, even after all these years. And I love her for it!

Listening to her talk about Moonlight, I don't care that she was inspired by Twilight, because you can tell that at the end of the day, what she was really taken by was how she related to it and how it made her think of her own life. Which is what all of Stevie's songs come down to, anyway.

And I was thinking that even though 'she runs with the ones she can't keep up with' is a reference to Bella's human limitations compared to the vampires' (or wolves) super power and speed, it also squarely reminds me of LDW:

You love only the tallest trees
I come running down the hill
But you're fast; you're the winner
Long distance winner

Strangely enough, the tallest trees line reminds me of Edward climbing trees with Bella on his back. Maybe Stephenie Meyer was a BN fan:laugh:. Hmm. I'm not sure Mormons could listen to BN growing up, especially not with that randy album cover.

Yep, definitely. I hadn't thought of that connection specifically, but it's definitely a very applicable comparison, as Stevie even said, "She runs with the vampires... I run with the rock stars."

Wonder if anyone's ever called Stevie 'spider monkey.'

The "he slows down"s in Moonlight always remind me of The Highwayman: "Then he sees her coming / Heartbeats on the wind / Consider's slowing down /But then he could never win."

Going with this...even if it incites groans across the board  ...The Highwayman must be another Lindsey song, eh? She sure did open a can of whoop ass on him at the Wiltern when she was singing that line and wagging her finger at him up in the balcony. Scared my ass straight. It was like Silver Springs during the Dance all over again.

HA! She wasn't too scary, she was saying "baby" with that finger wag.

Maybe it was her unexpected scream at the end that gave me a jolt? I just remember she was having a go at him and I was feeling it. Freaked me out. To me it was the most memorable song of the night besides Soldier's Angel. Neither were favorites of mine before seeing them live. Ooo the voodoo she can do. :D

I am really curious who this is about.

Voting for Joe Walsh.

Reminds me of Joe's song "Walk Away".

Just think. a week ago we were glued to our computers or radios. listening to Stevie 's awesome long interview with Jim Ladd.Going into the wee hours in the east coast all of us are getting sleepy eyed and dont want to miss a minute of Stevie talking to Jim and did not want to miss a second .She stayed on the air about 4 hours. What dedication Stevie has for her fans. She hasn't get any sleep in 24hours.Days before her signing at Amoeba .She went that extra mile for her fans. Thanks for Jim letting her stay on the air for all that time.I checked my Adrive account tonight and 204 of you fans downloaded the show.Thank you Curtis for capturing the whole show for us.As I can see.I'm proud of Stevie going all out with these interviews and signings.

Dave's guitar riff on Ghosts Are Gone: "It came out of the ethos."

Another vote for Joe Walsh in Ghosts, and I have noticed she never mentions him lately. Lindsey seems to be her great love during this round with the media. Maybe she finally heard that interview Joe did with Howard Stern (that I've never had the chance to hear, despite searching) in which he said he was just a road **ck? Also, Dave said Stevie was the first person to say "Don't come around here no more" to Joe, all those years back, which inspired him to write the song.

ETA Wondering why people think she's less than sober in this interview? Just the fact that she's talking for so long, or...?

She did mention him though and rather kindly (saying that according to Sharon he left to save their lives). This was a departure from her other recent comments about him in which she was sour on him in a way she hadn't been before.
