She is so full of sh.it. She is either being coy or she's just plain stupid. She actually thinks that the same person who stole Secret Love from her held it in secret all these years and then put it on youtube! Good God!

1. she probably gave the song away years ago when she freely gave out demos to her friends

2. its been floating around the bootleg universe since 1982 and she's known about it

3. anyone in the world could have put it on youtube and multiple times

4. as Heijra once said, "bi.t.ch please! acting like you don't know who it's about"

I have to agree with you on all this. When she acts the way she acts in this video, it really turns me off. She has more common sense than that (I'd hope). Of course she knows who the song is about, it just must be scandalous or she'd share. Of course she knows the song has been in many hands over the years because ALL her demos have. It's not ONE person's fault Secret Love ended up on Youtube. That song no doubt went through thousands of hands before it wound up on Youtube. She has to know that. She's just trying to be purposefully dramatic & outrageous. She can't be that dumb.... can she?!

Almanac was released in November 1978, so "Secret Love" has been in fans' hands since then at the very least.

BTW, I was on Viv OVERLOAD last week with Kill Bill on AMC EVERY NIGHT!!!!! Poor Vernita...

And a great song it is.

Like she said, it's simple, it's precise. And I think it's poignant. About the YouTube stuff?... well, she IS, afterall, "dramatic" - For What That's Worth. :D

PS: I like the looser wave, beachy hair look on Stevie and was wondering if Ms. Witherspoon had any influence on that choice, her hair has looked very similar in the recent past.

Dear Stevie,

I confess, I stole the cassette while Barbara was out walking the Yorkie & waited decades for just the right moment to leak it onto Youtube. (I admit, it feels good that you finally acknowledged my action, especially after ignoring how I did the same thing with "Sorcerer", "Candlebright", "Planets of the Universe", "Running through the Garden", and all the others.)
In fact, as long as I'm coming clean, I'm the one who convinced Lindsey that for an album cover to be true art, you would need to lose the expensive blouse, even if it made you cry.
Also, I insisted that the flight attendants remove the blue lamp from the plane so I'd have more room in my aisle seat. (Too bad that plot got foiled, along with the one where I tried to keep you from singing on "Everywhere".)
I kept "Silver Springs" off of Rumours and got "Sara" edited down to a fraction of its length, right before I got that loon to claim in court that you weren't the real writer.
I started the roadie rumor.
I squelched the Goldfish and the Ladybug special, classic though it was meant to be.
Heck, I'm behind the conspiracy that had the doc put in implants that would leak. And Botox that would make your eyebrows look like Satan's kids.
So sorry for making you a victim once more, Stevie. You know, just in case Karen keeps diligently Googling your name on a computer (that is of course not in your house) and actually reads this. :wavey:

love (secretly),
Jake

Don't tell her I'm the horrible shrink who hooked her on Klonipin. I'm to blame for her not meeting Mr. Right, the man she could never be serious about because she always had to get in a limo and wave goodbye for six months. I'm also to blame for her never having the child she didn't really want because she never had time to raise a child while being in the Army.

So, why would it be harder for her to remember what the song was about in 1975 than it would have been if it had been written in 1976. She's like, I think it must have been in 1975, because it was so early, "so at the beginning" that I can't remember. Why is 1975 that much closer to the beginning than 1976?

Were her recall skills that much sharper in 1976 that she wouldn't have forgotten a year later?

The idea that the person who stole the song hoarded it for 20 years and then posted it for all the world to see as soon as You Tube came into fruition is amusing, because it runs contrary to the thief's presumed personality type. If I go and steal the Mona Lisa and keep it in a private vault where no one can see it but me, I get some sort of thrill out of the exclusive secrecy. I'm not giving that up easily. I'm not slapping my cherished Mona Lisa onto Facebook as soon as Mark Zuckerberg gets around to inventing it.

If you steal something to keep it for yourself, you don't give it to the world (for the very FIRST time) as soon as there's a place for public uploading available.

First.... let us all be nice, because we are all talking about "Our Stevie" and it is her story to tell.

But as for it never being shown to Fleetwood Mac or Lindsey.... there was a reason, and there still is a reason, and she what that reason is. Stevie loves talking about her younger days...so I am sure she remembers.

From the timeframe it was written she was probably still with Lindsey....or on it's last leg of the relationship. She is saying that doesn't remember, just so that she won't hurt people...... plain and simple. So, this will be her story to tell. Remember before "Timespace" her stories behind the songs.....were all over the place....and then when the CD came out with the liner notes...... and well, let's just say.....they were pretty much all different story connections.

So... she is the artist, and I am sure someday......when that person is long gone from the world, she just might say who the "Secret Love" was. Until then....it is fun trying to figure it out. Because you just don't write a song like that about just a "nobody" in your life.......it was a special "somebody".

Aww, you're a doll :xoxo:, but I have to call bulls.hi.t on Stevie.

Worried about hurting people with her dish? She readily cops to the songs about all her affairs with married men. Their wives don't matter? Did she care who knew she took Lindsey away from his first steady? She's frequently inconsiderate to LB and his wife, too, the way she talks about him in interviews sometimes. How can we seriously buy the "not hurting people" line? :sorry:

michelej1
07-17-2011, 03:24 PM
Well, I do agree that Stevie is just not saying who it was because she was dating the person when she was still with Lindsey. She tells the interviewer that she and Lindsey had broken up. But in 1975, they hadn't broken up all the way. So, the reason she didn't show the song to him or FM is because she didn't want him to know. I would think that the secret love is Mick. She just doesn't want to come clean about the fact that the relationship started even earlier than the two of them have said it did.

At the Wiltern when she said the song was about an "ancient creature" I smiled, because I think it was a fond reference to Mick which she knew he would hear and enjoy. That's not saying that she didn't dally with lots of other people beside Mick, but I think he is the on she was serious about and the lyrics to Secret Love indicate that her feelings were serious.

I doubt she has anything to hide from Lindsey at this point. IMO the more likely scenario is that the secret love himself was married. One of many for Stevie. And Mick does write that she was dating a married studio exec in the '70s, if I remember. I suspect it's someone like that, a non-famous person.

Yeah, but the way she talks about not showing the song to anyone in FM makes it seem like she didn't want FM to know, not some outsider's wife. Maybe John McVie is her secret love.

Well, it's true. John once said that sometimes he has forgotten things ever happened until he hears Mick talking about them. Alcohol and pot? Not so easy on the brain as the coca leaf. The heavy FM coke users seem to have preserved more of their little gray cells than those other, dottering guys.

That's a good point. After Rumours hit, there were a lot of hangers on around and Stevie said she would practically give copies of things to anyone who asked, but this demo was stolen before they achieved that level of popularity.

So it's curious that even in 1975 Stevie had to send things home to her mother if she wanted to keep them safe. Someone around her was rifling through her possessions. I wonder if there is one particular person she found to be untrustworthy.

The prime suspect wouldn't be anyone she found untrustworthy, but more likely someone she trusted, who had the most access. Don't you think?

Well, if you have to hide things from them to keep them from being taken, I think the person is untrustworthy. It may have been someone that she loved and didn't want to push out of her life, but I don't think they could have been trustworthy if they stole demos within weeks of her making them.

This. I agree that she probably knows a lot more than she is letting on. However, she has said that she has ideas about who it may be about. To me it just seems like she wants to make sure that it is who she says it is. I don't think she's necessarily worried that much about "hurting" the other person or their family members, I just think she doesn't want to embarrass them or herself. I can understand that. Also, if what she has been saying is true (that in 1975 they were all moving fast etc.) then she very well may not remember EXACTLY who this song was about. Maybe I'm being a little on the defensive side here. But I can see her point.

Oh, yeah - I guess you're right about the money. I guess I thought Keith was doing pretty well since he had the house and could afford a "cleaning lady" and was taking out of town work too. And, I can't imagine Lindsey had a hard time finding pot. But, I thought Keith actually said it was coke or I read that somewhere...
