Sorry if this was already posted, I just noticed this link on Janis Joplin's fb page that says FWIW is the new single, doesn't look very official though:

Unfortunately this song will go down in history as a virtually unplayed second single - just like "Two Kinds of Love", "Blue Denim" and "Skies the Limit. So sad.
Thats why I loved experiencing TISL in its day - not only were 3 singles released, all charted in some way or another in Billboard. Too bad it wont happen this time.
Hate to be negative but the whole IYD experience (once the tour is complete) will be over far too soon.

I hate to say it, but it's looking that way. The singel is not even showing up on any airplay charts at all. Hasn't it been out for like three weeks now? And IYD is about to fall off the Billboard top 200, as well. :(
Hopefully they will release Annabel Lee as a last ditch effort to save the album. Oh yeah, and also PROMOTE IT too.
This is what happens when you wait almost 10 years (i.e., SYW) to release any new music even when it's a great CD.:distress:

I don't believe FWIW was necessarily a bad choice. It's a great song and potentially could have had legs off the back of "Landslide's" popularity. But as Bandon pointed out, it does appear Reprise, and Stevie for that matter, are not promoting it. A collage video could have simply been compiled from the documentary footage ala "Cheaper Than Free" style, to have some presence on the world wide web. TV appearance's could have been booked to perform the FWIW, a song in which she could successfully deliver live easily on national TV compared to "Secret Love". But alas, It feels as if any single Reprise released from IYD at this point would be a hard sell. Her best chance was with the 1st single, and they chose to go with the dusted off, never recorded, old song nostalgia route, complete with a teaser story that Stevie could coyly discourse about whom it could possibly be written about to the press;).
Fans need to accept the fact that Stevie's hit single days are long behind her. I'm not saying she could never have a fluke hit song, but the odds are stacked against her, esp. if her record company is not strongly pushing the song to radio. And I bet they are not willing to spend the money on that gamble at this stage in Stevie's career, when they have younger, more bankable rising stars to spend that scarce marketing $$ behind. In Your Dreams, Moonlight & Annabel Lee all would have been sure fire hits back in Stevie's heyday, but sadly radio & even VH1 now turn their nose at new material from Stevie, choosing instead to almost exclusively only play her classic catalog. I would happily eat my words, if Stevie landed a new hit song...but I've stopped worrying & hoping for it, since around 2003.

what IS a single? for me, it actually has to be released and packaged as such (if even on iTunes)--not just sent to dj's for radio play. Otherwise, what makes it a single?

I have yet to hear "Secret Love" get played. At this point I don't think she'll break through with anything other than a rocker. I guess they'll opt for "Ghosts Are Gone", but I still think an edited version of "Wide Sargasso Sea" would be wiser. Besides, given her new addiction to pantomiming song lyrics on the concert stage, I look forward to her inspired interpretation of "burned-his-house-down" during the live performance of the song. (Strikes invisible match on platform boot, tosses it at invisible silken drapes in invisible cream-colored ivory and soft-yellow house, covers entire head with shawl, stops drops & rolls with Sharon.)
And as far as I'm concerned, FWIW is no "Landslide". It's half a great song (only the verses).

so far have not heard a single played on the radio from the new album at all here and I listen to the radio all the time and asked and requested pretty much all the stations that would play her new music I got one email back from a dj saying oh I love her that was my response back. No Radio play at all in CT probably why she is not stopping here. They just play her classic stuff only now when Trouble In Shangri-La came out they did play her new songs from that album Planets of Universe and Sorcerer was played alot I remember.

I think both Moonlight & scaled down WSS should of been the 1st & 2nd singles released. No wonder Stevie's struggling with album sales when she has morons like Warner Bros sabotaging another great Album & calling the shots:distress: IMO they made the same mistake with TISL releasing Everyday as the first single:eek::eek: that song was another poor choice, in fact & unfortunately for me, i didn't bother buying that album till many years later. I feel that FWIW doe not strike me as a great choice, as much as i love this song, it could be seen an other bland song for radio & not played.. on the other hand Moonlight & WSS have a great rockin kick arse vibe that would be suitable for radio & hopefully increase album sales = more albums from Stevie in the future:D
Sadly I still haven't heard Secret Love on the radio here in OZ either..

ya...see your point..FWIW is a "nice" song...like a "deep cut" maybe...but definately NOT single/radio airplay material...funny you mention "sabotage"..thats exactly what i said when it was announced that FWIW was going to be the next single...i felt it would do nothing for promotion/sales...poor choice from a PR perspective..again...especially for someone who hasnt released new material in 10 years..."secret love" and FWIW are the chosen "comeback songs???" all the TV apperances and not 1 IYD's promo showed...they verbally mentioned "the new album"...but VISUALLY that promo add is very appealing...sparked my interest big time..i dont think i would consider the album a "flop" from a quality standpoint because i love the music...i thinks its a great piece of work..but lets face it...financially....all the time and effort from a lot of people...when all is said and done....they may be able to go mcdonalds a few times w/the profit made form this

Yes radio sucks here in CT ,When it comes to playing Stevie's new tracks .as you know.Yes I did remember hearing a little bit of TISL on the radio.Anyway I was glad they played the crap out of FM's SYW cd back when it was released.Like Peacekeeper and Say You Will.Radio these days wants to stick with the young talent and currents..they dont give a bloody damn about old established artists.they treat them as has- beens or one hit wonders.Sorry about the finger pointing now.I blame WB for lack of not pushing to promote her work to radio stations.I would think she probably do better with a different record label.I dont know the details about whats left on her contract. She is selling cd's probably due to great reviews from the critics and word of mouth.I do know it not from radio airplay.

i agree. Definitely not a strong choice for the second single. Annabell Lee is a standout, as is the title track. perhaps even moonlight. I still think Secret Love would have done better if vh1 had played the video. Perhaps country music tv will pick up on For what its worth. it does have a folk aspect to it and they did play the eagles and are now playing the dobbie borthers.

OK, this is where the confusion sets in for me because in the In Your Dreams, Part 2 (found here, at 1:11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62f71B83Z10) she's sitting down to put the vocals on this song and says, "it was the only time I ever went on a bus, with my friend the drummer, right after rehab and I was really fragile..."
So it had to have been written around the Street Angel tour (and I'm also convinced this guy and the guy in Love Is are the same person).
*sigh* I don't get it.

I don't think she's actually ever said the thing about Tom Petty. Where that quote started to show up is after the Wiltern show and the Billboard reviewer wrote that she said that.

""For What It's Worth" was written about her summer riding the bus across the U.S. with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (Heartbreaker guitarist Mike Campbell joined the band for the tune). Nicks called it "the best summer of my life-and you can interpret that any way you like.""
But she actually doesn't say that when she's talking during the show. She talks about becoming an Honorary Heartbreaker, bringing out a real Heartbreaker who helped her write it, and the song being about traveling across the country on tour in a bus and having the best summer of her life as a separate thought. The only time she's done that is on the Street Angel tour.

The way Billboard layed out their sentence is wrong... She did say it was written about the 94 period... Billboard ran both that, and the fact that Mike Campbell From TP was there to perform it into one giant sentence... If they would have put a period after U.S.. Then it would have taken on a new meaning...

Exactly. But I think the reviewer legitimately walked away thinking that was reason she wrote it. And because Billboard is a more reliable music source, it's going to get repeated in those other articles that just regurgitate what's already been written because they don't get an interview with her.

With proper promotion tying it to Twilight or somehow creating its own Twilight iconography (i.e. a music video NOT directed by Dave Stewart), I do believe that "Moonlight" could have made some impact as a single. But obvs. there was backing from WB on something like that--probably because Twilight is not WB, right?

Here's the problem with many of the songs on the album that immediately make them non-contenders for singles: They're too long. You go too far past the 4 minute mark and radio programmers balk especially in large monitored markets. There's only 5 songs that are under 5 minutes. And you're talking about having to cut well over a minute worth of material to make a radio edit. That's not going to happen.
So you have 5 options: Secret Love, For What It's Worth, In Your Dreams, Italian Summer, Cheaper Than Free. The last two are out. Neither would be strong enough to get radio play. I think the remaining three will be the singles from this album (assuming they get to the third).

The length of many songs are too long for FM radio stations to consider playing them for alternative (other than a released single) airplay, which is limiting. However, they can cut any of the tracks down for singles. It happens all of the time and has for years. The flip side is when you hear an extended version of a song that was originally a 3 to 4 minute single.

Surely the purpose of releasing singles for veteran artists like Stevie now is primarily to pique interest in the album they're culled from, not to actually bother the 'pop charts'? There might be the occasional flukey hit, but otherwise the 'single' is little more than a way to ensure that radio plays a particular album track a lot. And yes, radio edits are a good idea, given how de-skilled DJ'ing has become.

Yes, I realize that. Very few of the singles I've worked have gone to radio straight off the album. But those radio edits are usually 30 or 40 seconds off and mostly instrumental stuff or an early fade out. You're talking about doubling that. That extra 30 or 40 seconds is a verse. Which one do you think Stevie's going to let them cut?

I'm thinking there may already be shorter versions of tracks that were produced a while back, and the decisions regarding the lengths of may have been determined then...not the other way around. We may have gotten some "extended" versions on IYD.
IDK..a big chunk towards the end of Annabel Lee could be cut. Maybe there is an alternative ending after the interlude..then chorus. After that point the song seems to meander on and on.
Does anyone really think Dave, Stevie and the record company thought radio stations were going to play 5 and 6 minute Stevie Nicks singles on regular rotations? They may have missed the mark on some of the promotional strategies, but I don't think they are that stupid...seriously.

I'm not calling them stupid but there's definitely a difference between the corporate mind looking for commercial viability of a single and that of an artist creating an album. There *is* a certain amount of planning on the front end that goes into at least the first or sometimes the second single. But you're saying that Stevie and Dave, two extremely creative people, sat down and said they were going to chop up a finished product on the off chance that it may be a single. I highly doubt that especially in Dave's case. That's why the songs end up being 5+ minutes long on the album. (Knowing Stevie, some of the ones that we got were probably whittled down from their 8 minute originals. lol) I can guarantee neither one of them knows anything about P1s or PPM and it's impact on programming because I know PDs and MDs who still don't understand it. And A&R/promotion people don't lurk around the studio for artists like Stevie so what they hear on a play through is going to be closer to what is on the album. And at that point, they're looking for a single out of the ones already recorded for it.
The easiest ones to make those decisions on are the ones that are already closest to the 4 minute mark because there's usually instrumental wiggle room. You start messing with lyrics and verses, you've got not only the chance of messing with continuity but the added cost of having to re-record and mix an entire song again.
There's no way Annabel Lee would be considered for a single. It's dated, no matter how modern the production is on it. But it's very Stevie and that's perfectly fine. Not every song is meant to be a single.
I'm not trying to be mean but I deal with this every day because I'm a radio promoter. I've worked superstars that get #1 after #1, heritage acts, indie acts, crossover acts. I've run the gamut of possible excuses a programmer will give you for not adding a single. She's already got age and lack of a hit in the past twenty years going against her, she needs the strongest thing possible off the album. I just look at it from that point of view.
That being said, I don't want Stevie to make records that sound like Taylor's or Katy's or P!nk's so that she can get radio play. I want them to sound like Stevie. And I want there to be a smart marketing plan in place that doesn't necessarily involve sinking more money into futile pursuits like terrestrial radio.

So in YOUR expert opinion, what WOULD be the best song for a single off of the album? Also could you elaborate on Annabel lee? I am guessing you mean, because it is an older poem set to music? ( all of her songs are anyway)

A lot of this is probably why no one listens to radio anymore.

Well, I'm not them... so I might be wrong.. but I think they means it sounds 'dated' in terms of the style and everything. Many people have remarked that it sounds like it could have been a classic FM song (which is great, and probably why a lot of people like it because essentially we're all fans of classic FM). . However classic FM songs were radio hits in the 70s/80s, which is not conducive to a radio hit today.
That said, I personally don't have an opinion on whether or not it would be a good single. I don't like most of what's on the radio today so I have trouble predicting what other people would like, I suppose.

I stand by the three that I said: Secret Love, For What It's Worth, and In Your Dreams. You May Be the One would be stretching it but I could see it being attempted with a radio edit.
And that's exactly what I mean about Annabel Lee. How many songs do you count on the radio that recite Poe or or any classic poetry for that matter? I can only think of one that's not getting radio play and it's the same poem on a bluegrass/Americana album. It's very Stevie and as Stevie fans, we totally get it. But the radio listening majority would not get it. There has to be something that draws the listener in and as it is, it's an older artist reciting an even older poem with an arrangement that kind of plods on.
Plus, it takes over a minute to get to the hook and it's almost 6 minutes long.
Pick the song you want as the single and then turn on the station you want it to be played on. Pay really close attention to what is played. Do you feel like Stevie's song fits in there? Next to what? Is it a current or a recurrent? Triple A has an eclectic collection of currents. I definitely can hear it playing on the local station.
A lot of this is probably why no one listens to radio anymore.
Exactly. But you have to think of those things when you pick singles off an album.
And unless something drastic happens, it's not going to change. In fact, I see it getting worse. It infuriates me on a regular basis. That's why I'd really like the focus to be on smart marketing choices outside of terrestrial radio. I definitely think licensing Moonlight to the next Twilight movie would be fantastic.
And all this is not a negative reflection on the album. I think it's great. In fact, I've told people to go get it. I've tweeted away about it. I'm excited to see the new stuff played at her show that I bought a ticket to.

Yes I agree.I remember when I first heard Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" on the top 40 stations in 1975 .yes it was a hit that kept playing every 30 minutes.A great song at the time.

Today we have Adele on the radio with a big hit on her hands.also a great song .She's at number 1 for weeks.

If Stevie wants a number 1 tune these days.I think she should go the country route.

Top 40 radio will not play artists over 40. Even Madonna had to record with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland to get play on U.S. radio. AC radio has kicked out the familiar voices to make room for Pink, Katy Perry, Gaga, Usher, etc. AC radio of 2011 is a million miles away from AC radio of 2004. There's always one or two flukes a year such as Adele's Rolling in the Deep, but there's no diversity in the widely listened to formats. Adult Contemporary radio now plays dance music and songs with F*uck in the title (CeeLo's F*uck You and Pink's "F*ckin' Perfect" are two of the biggest AC hits of the year. ) Who was the last artist over 40 to have a major radio hit?
FYI: For What It's Worth is going for adds.

I agree. It reminds me of when Dusty Springfield could only get on pop radio dueting with the Pet Shop Boys or Ronny Spector backing Eddie Money on Take Me Home Tonight. I'm sure there are more current examples, but can't think of any right now.
It's good to see FWIW is being added!!

Its just really too bad that factors that shouldn't matter (like age) are being considered in regards to radio play. What should be played are a variety of good quality songs. If "In Your Dreams" had come out in the heyday of FM radio, I think most of the tracks on the album would have seen radio exposure.
It's very unfortunate that artists like Stevie Nicks and Heart are producing some of their best albums now but radio won't play them.

Finally listening to the edit, and I agree. I'm not technical in the least so I don't know how to explain it, but it seems like the vocals are more clear, brought up more in the radio edit.
I love this song so much. I have a personal connection with the words. The first time I heard the first verse my stomach dropped. Line for line, I get this song. <3

Not a bad edit, though it does not fix my big complaint about the song - Stevie's deep/flat/grating vocal on the chorus. I don't anticipate that casual listeners will be able to stand it better than I, a Stevie fan.
The verses sound good, as always.

Yes.She's now 71.In 1984 she burned up the charts with "What's Love Got to Do With it" she was about 45 years old.
Cher's 1998 smash hit "Believe" at age 52 burned up the charts across the board.she's a couple years older then Stevie which was 50 at the time.

I don't like to disagree, but i'm not arguing either. I consider them artists because it's their VOICE. They themselves are unique, and it's their stage presence and how they put on a show. What they stand for, they are entertaining. Yes, Tina has songs written For her, or record execs. choose songs for her, but she makes them her own, and uses them to entertain. Does that make sense? I mean that's just my opinion.
And of course Stevie is just an all around person with presence, and her words.
