View Full Version : The "Truth" Behind the Song

SapphireSister

So, as we all know Stevie writes all her songs based on real-life situations she's experienced and/or people/places/things/ideas that have inspired her. She's been pretty straight forward about why she writes, her journals, etc. On the other hand she has been very inconsistent over the years explaining who and what certain songs are about, telling a hundred different versions, or saying she simply doesn't remember. Obviously this is totally hypothetical but if Stevie were to tell you the "truth" behind a song, what song would it be and why?

Sable On Blond. It's one of my absolute favourite Stevie songs, and yet, there's so little speculation out there about it. I'd love to know who inspired it, who/what it's actually really about, and so on, simply because I have a feeling it would be a really interesting story

In a 1983 interview, Stevie said that 'Sable on Blond' was about moving into her new house.

She said that she had to learn to depend on her own self (being 'blond on blond', as opposed to 'sable on blond'), and not call upon the magic sword 'Excalibur' for help.

So obvious!

I've always wanted to know about Sable on Blond as well.

It also seems in recent years she's been more honest about the fact that although a song may start from a place of truth, she does in fact embellish. I mean I thought 'Italian Summer' was about some great love affair she had in Italy until she flat out said it wasn't. LOL!

I still want to know about the new songs, especially "For What It's Worth".

Great question!
It would be incredible to finally have definite answers about Destiny Rules, Sara or the Tower, of course. But the song I'd most love to have her sit me down and explain every word of is Wide Sargasso Sea.

I know she's spoken about it some and we've all speculated that it's about her time with Rupert Hines, but I would love to know more. I first read the book 7 years ago, and can't think of another that's so impacted me, so I was blown away that Stevie connected to it too. I'd love to know not only who it's about, but how the story spoke to her, how she connected to the main character and certain themes. It's also probably the sexiest song in her catalogue, and I'd love to hear about her choice to be more graphic (Not that "kiss" and "make love" are terribly graphic, but this is Stevie...).

Yes! The first verse of this song immediately made me think of someone from my past. It's an incredibly sensual song, lyrically and musically.

Are you thinking of Everybody Loves You? That I agree she's paid lots of lip service to that being about Lindsey in many recent interviews.

I've never heard Stevie or anyone in FM mention EFO in any interview or press from the SYW era, minus the possibly Monica reference in the Destiny Rules DVD nor do I know that it has ever been played live at any FM show. So if anyone can cite anything, I'm very anxious to hear.

For the record, I don't buy that it's about Monica and Bill. Inspired by....maybe I can admit that a little bit.

I have an interview on cassette somewhere where she talks about this song... she talks about how in the legend of Arthur when Merlin gives him the sword he tells Arthur that he can only call on the sword when he truly has tried everything else to get out of a situation. If Arthur calls on the sword too soon, the sword will break and then he won't have it when he needs it. So to her it's symbolic of how you don't ask for that "extra special, supernatural kind of help" unless you really need it... "In silence she says...'excalibur'..."

That Sable on Blond explaination reminds me of what "That Made Me Stronger" is about...her asking Tom Petty (?) to help her and write songs and he told her to write her own damn songs.

LOL Well, I paraphrased. ;)

Also, she sure does keep mum about Rhiannon. We just don't know jack squat about that one!

[QUOTE=Also, she sure does keep mum about Rhiannon. We just don't know jack squat about that one![/QUOTE]

I've wondered too about Rhiannon. As a young girl of 18 when that song first came out I just loved the rock sound of it, but under the surface there was something more. I honestly believe one could write a dissertation about Rhiannon, the song and the books. Stevie interpreted the books into song and then later into her song series. I really think Stevie's interpretations of both books say a lot about her underlying psyche at the time and how she connected to the Mare Goddess, Rhiannon. I am ordering the rest of the Mabinogion series to read (I got Rhiannon's) to figure it all out. How does the Forest of the Black Roses connect? I hope the rest of the books will shed light on that.

I digressed but alas......I think that Rhiannon changes as she ages and how she feels at the time, like a wandering Bard or Druid, she changes the song. Obviously Rhiannon symbolizes the struggles and darkness shrouding a young Stevie. It's haunting and one has to wonder what haunted her at the time? I know....I know....Lindsey!

So I was thinking about something...a lot of the information we have from Stevie are what "inspired" the song as opposed to who or what it's actually about. For example, the song Rock a Little. She says this is about a house she moved into that was literally rocking and she got inspired to write the song. On the other hand the whole song is obviously not about a shaking house. I want to know exactly what she is referring to in the "that is how songs are written, stories are told, rumours are started" line if indeed it is something specific. Another example is BATB. Obviously it was inspired by the original Cocteau movie but she's actually talking about Mick. There are numerous other examples including Rhiannon, Joan of Arc, Alice, etc. but I want to know the truth, her stories! lol. I know I'm starting to ramble but this is so fascinating to me, always has been. As I write this I'm realizing that in many instances there probably is no "truth" since that word can be very subjective. I mean this is art we are talking about so maybe it's not as cut and dry as we'd like to think. Who knows what really goes on in that crazy lady's head anyway!

Oh another one I'd love to know, The Nightmare! Also, I always assumed OMBTRARS was Don Henley but who knows for sure. Has she said it was about him?

It's about Mick (the keeper of the time). In an early interview she remarked that the first thing she noticed about Mick was this glorious old watch that he kept on a gold chain in his pocket, or perhaps the same toilet chain that he attaches his balls to?

That being said, I do wonder what she meant by "The keeper of the time is blind" and "Be careful of the danger as you cross the great water... strangers who are new to your eyes..." In that light, "watchdevil" is probably a poetic contraction for "watch out for the devil!" I suspect it must have been something to do with a business deal gone bad- perhaps recalling the whole "Fakewood Mac" fiasco in the early 70s. Or perhaps Mick, being the manager of the band as well as its drummer, must have screwed up something fierce.

I'd heard this about Mick, especially after that tic-toc clip in the "Shake the Cage" concert vid, but has she herself confirmed it? And yes, I, too, want the "devil" part explained. It might not even be related to the band manager role like you suggest, it could be the way he divided time between his wife & Stevie during their affair? (I've always suspected that the affair started earlier than Mick claimed in his first book, in which case it could have inspired the song.)

Last night I was listening to Mirror Mirror. I had always thought about looking up the mystical significance of the Lily of the Valley flower she refers to in the very beginning. I had a few minutes and last night I looked it up. Since you mentioned Battle of the Dragons I thought I would share what I found. It may mean nothing, but in Stevie's world she sees the mystical behind the mundane. Lily of the Valley is part of a fable of a battle with a dragon. So......in Stevieland this may have meaning connected to her and Joe.

Here is the website link I got it from:
http://www.magialuna.net/l.html

Lily of the Valley is also toxic like Bella Donna.

Lily of the Valley's (Convallaria Magalis, also known as Jacob's Ladder, Convallaria, Male Lily, Our Lady's Tears, Convall-lily, Lily Constancy, Ladder-to-Heaven, and May Lily) name, "Majalis" signifies "that which belongs to May", and the old astrological books place the plant under the dominion of Mercury, since Maia, the daughter of Atlas, was the mother of Mercury or Hermes. These chaste white flowers were once known as "Our Lady's Tears", and the fragrance was purported to attract Nightingales. There is an old Sussex legend that St. Leonard fought against a great dragon in the woods near Horsham, only vanquishing it after a mortal combat lasting many hours, during which he received grievous wounds, but wherever his blood fell, Lilies-of-the-Valley sprang up to commemorate the desperate fight. The sweet scent of these tiny flowers is so strong it literally floats on the breeze.

I want to know the story behind Baby Doll, especially the beginning - "My girlfriend saw my husband, he's coming across town to get me / He's been gone for five years or more and expects me to be waiting" - is she talking about Kim Anderson??

Or, maybe this is an idea she got from a movie or book, like Julia or Running Through the Garden.

Thousand Days. I've heard several times it's about Prince... "you've been asleep... well I've been asleep for how long she says?" There's a story about her being high and then falling asleep on his kitchen floor, and him not being so impressed with that and her dependence on drugs in general. They never had an actual affair "the closest you've ever come to me was to help me up the stairs" . Though she said recently that he had wanted to have an affair "you live by the light of the moon, I live by the light of desire..oooh, such words to her over the phone"

But then, who knows!

I'll also add Everybody Loves You. To me it seems like it's about the same thing as Thrown Down....

he held her hand she listened to what he had to say..
maybe now he could prove to her that he could be good for her
and they should be together..
A decision no one makes.. and now you're going home
it's so overwhelming you have nothing left to say...

It was just one of those things
That happened or didn’t happen
A strand of golden hair tangled
Like the words of a song
Like a spider’s web

She was so enchanted by his voice
She was so shaken by his words
His plan for her…
Was just not possible
She had no words…

So clearly I've spent waaaayyyy too much time thinking about this, and someone probably should smack me, but....I've pretty much convinced myself that "For What It's Worth" and "Love Is" are about Don Henley.

Don is a drummer and in that video promoting the new album, she's sitting down to put her vocals on FWIW and says, "it's the only time I ever went on a bus, with my friend the drummer, right after rehab, and I was really fragile...." so obviously it was Street Angel tour. Now, Don didn't get married until 1995, so when she sings "you said, 'even if I left my girlfriend'..." If this was in fact written in '94 he probably had the girlfriend who would become his wife.

Also, when she introduces "Love Is" she uses some of the same words that are in FWIW, "a very fragile, hard time in my life...an angel stepped in and took my hand...it was a brilliant moment, but it couldn't last..."

And yes, the Eagles were on tour at the same time Stevie was on the SA tour, but out of the 33 dates Stevie did Don could have technically been there for 20 because the Eagles took some breaks.

Alright, I got that off my chest. So who's first in line to slap me? I'm welcoming it at this point.

In a 1983 interview, Stevie said that 'Sable on Blond' was about moving into her new house.

She said that she had to learn to depend on her own self (being 'blond on blond', as opposed to 'sable on blond'), and not call upon the magic sword 'Excalibur' for help.

So obvious!

I'm sorry but this has got to be one of Stevie's most GROTTIEST songs ...
or maybe that's just me :D
i'm sure she didn't mean for it to sound all smutty and sexually veiled ...

well.... in the interview she says Dallas Taylor was part of the rehab. In most interviews she says that the drummer was on the bus with her during her tour in 94.. I could be wrong but I highly doubt that Dallas Taylor left his work and was on the tour with her.???

I don't think Dallas actually works for a rehab center, I think he has his own private business as an interventionist. He does work all over the US. So he may have been there at rehab, but he wouldn't have been tied down to that specific place, nor would him going with Stevie - however inappropriate it may have been - meant leaving his work. She was his work.

And I don't think it's a coincidence that the song is called 'For What It's Worth', when that's the title of a well known song by Buffalo Springfield, written by Stephen Stills. Not when Dallas Taylor was the drummer for Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

'even if I left my girlfriend'..." etc.

Part of what makes For What It's Worth so mysterious to me is the chorus....Is she saying to the Mystery Man "You said" - in other words "I, Stevie, am telling you that you once told me that even if I (Stevie) left my girlfriend , packed up my stuff, etc." - in other words Stevie did all that.

OR, is she saying to him "You said [sometime in the past] 'Even if I (Mystery Man) left my girlfriend, packed up my stuff' "etc. - in other words the man did all that stuff.

Am I making sense here?

I used to think the same sort of thing about Kind of Woman. "She matters to you..." Was Stevie saying that "I (Stevie) matter" or that She - another woman - matters to you?

From subsequent interviews, I have come to believe the former (I, Stevie, matter to you).

I understand what you mean. It's that whole Stevie-switching-her-verb-tense that Lindsey oh so gently tried to talk to her about. LOL

But it's kind of cool that you can look at it two ways...

That song took on a whole different meaning in '97, didn't it? Heh. I don't think she'll ever sing it with as much passion as she did during that tour.

Yes, she's talked about that one, taking a car to his place (long way to go), just to break up again. Them arguing and he kept her demos or master reels or something, which just added insult to injury.

Why it causes her harm (to bring his lyrics into the mix).

So, he cries, like he's sorry, but she doesn't think they're really tears for her and her pain, because he doesn't understand that pain.

Beautiful Child
Angel

I always thought Angel was about Lindsey: "I still look up when you walk in the room.". I thought Stevie said that that line was about him? Or maybe it was Mick. Now I can't remember, but I think it's about one of those two.

Awww, I love that. I miss Christine so much. I've been in such a Christine mood lately, been listening to all of her songs. And I've recently come to truly understand and appreciate Stevie and Christine's mutual respect and admiration for each other (instead of acting catty and jealous). What a wonderful friendship between two classy ladies. <3

What inspired The Nightmare? Did she have an actual recurring nightmare perhaps that inspired this or is she speaking in general terms as in "you cannot know a dream till' you've known a nightmare". And who is the "he" that took the moon and her sisters prisoner? He doesn't sound very nice lol.

She wrote The Nightmare about Kim Anderson. You cannot know a dream (love) until you've know the nightmare (experiencing a bad relationship). She said he was pretty controlling and would or wouldn't let her be with Matthew according to his whims. So I suspect "he" is Kim and "the moon and her sisters" refers to Stevie herself and perhaps her backup singers/friends, who are like sisters to her.

I really wanna know what "Straight Back" is about. Who is she waiting for when she says "hours and hours I'm waiting for you"? Is it about Lindsey. That's what I was thinking of when she says that "the dream was never over, the dream had just begun" and especially when she says "she remembers how good it can be, she remembers the melody, in the shadow of my shadow, in a dream." So this very well could be about how she remembers what their time in Buckingham Nicks was like maybe and how they connect to each other musically?? Any other ideas

OK I guess Mick would make sense too...but I guess I got really excited when I thought about the connection between her and Lindsey and the song. Also it almost seems as if she's pining for him here (whoever she's talking about) and saying "please remember how good this was"!!
And ok, I may be totally off on this but does anyone else think that "Straight Back" could have fit right in on the Bella Donna album? To me it just sounds as if it would blend in perfectly

Beautiful Child I always thought was about Mick. But the line "You fell in love when I was only 10," though, does not make sense; Mick and Stevie are about the same age, and Mick didn't meet Jenny until he was 16. It maybe would make sense if she were sleeping with a married man who was older - and he and his wife fell in love when she was only 10. What is up with this line?

"Angel" I always thought was about Lindsey. There are a lot of instances in which they call each other "angel" in songs and of course she'd try not to "look up" when he walked in the room around the Rumours tour / Tusk recording era, if that's indeed when the song was written. Dreams passed them by... she's got the same wide eyes (that she had when they were young) and now they tell stories. etc. "When you were good, you were very, very good." (Didn't he say once they were great in bed together?) If she'd thrown in "blue eyes," there would be no doubt. :)

Very interesting about The Nightmare... I never knew Kim was like that.

I know her mom still calls her that (its in the thank you in the IYD cd cover), she also has said that aroung 1997 her mom said that the Mac should take the opportunity to see all the stuff they missed while touring all messed up on drugs. Sounds like her mom's words were echo in her head at the time. Just a thought....

Well, I take it as not being that young in age, but the person being older in experience. When Stevie met Mick she was new to the business. Obviously, she'd performed before, but it was the first time they were actually making their living in a band. They had so much that she'd wash $100s in the laundry and it's like doors opened up to her suddenly for the first time. I think she thinks of herself as an innocent at that time and due to Mick's authority in the band, his self-assurance and, yes, his height, I think maybe she looked up at him. So, maybe in some ways when he towered over her she felt like she was only 10.

I always thought The Nightmare was about Mick. It's someone in Fleetwood Mac because she references Sara and Storms, "I stood with you against the storm" and "drowning in the sea, baby drowning". And he later wouldn't allow her to use Silver Springs for Timespace so I figured that was him keeping the moon and her sisters prisoner. Like maybe Stevie had mused about using Sisters of the Moon in one of her many projects and Mick said no.

No I totally agree. This song was written several years before it was recorded for Mirage. We have the demo "Designs of Love" and I believe it was late 70's leading me to believe even more it's an ode to LB. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the time frame.

I would tend to agree with this more than the whole Kim Anderson bit. Just seems a bit far-fetched to me. I'm actually not convinced this song is about anyone in particular, maybe a series of people and/or situations. It's very general to me.

Anyone know when this was written? And who had the cojones to tell Stevie she didn't know pain? I bet they did, shortly afterwards :p

I put my favourite lines in bold!

Maybe...
About a girl that he had known when he was young
So he started the story
About a girl that he had known when he was young

She was the prettiest girl in the world
That was a long time ago
She was just like you
Oh, no, you say, "Yes, she looked just like you"

Someday you'll understand it all
Maybe I was wrong...maybe he was right
Talk about painful
He says, "You don't know what pain is"
Maybe you were wrong
Bold as you are, walking

Prettiest girl in the world
No emotion - held in tight
Nothing was said
It was hard to combat
Nothing was said
And the story ended tragically

So he ended the story
About the girl he met when he was young
She was the prettiest girl in the world
That was a long time ago
She looked just like you

Well, someday you'll understand it all
Maybe I was wrong...maybe she was right
Talk about painful
"You don't know what pain is, baby
Don't talk to me about it
You don't know what pain is"
Maybe you were wrong...
Just as you are, walking, walking

The prettiest girl in the world
Prettiest girl in the world
The prettiest girl in the world
The story says

That was a long time ago
She looked just like you
Someday you'll understand it all
Prettiest girl in the world
Prettiest girl in the world
Prettiest girl in the world
Maybe I was wrong...

I know it was from the Rock a Little era but if he wouldn't allow Silvers Spoons on Timespace I can imagine her talking about doing a Rhiannon movie or one of the other projects she had talked about and Mick telling her he wouldn't give up the rights to the songs.
