View Full Version : The original Street Angel mixes?

Hi all,

does anyone have the "original" mixes for Street Angel from what was meant to be the 1993 release? I know an alternate version of "Unconditional Love" was planned as the first single, and I know I've heard it somewhere before, but I can't seem to find it on my collection anywhere. Same applies to the 1991 version of "Listen To The Rain". Can anyone help at all?

Thanks,
Chris

I'm actually working on an all-encompassing Street Angel project, but I'm sure someone will post the original Glyn Johns mixes/versions since I'm not finished uploading everything.

Like most people know, after Johns left the project (did Atlantic reject the album? No idea, but Stevie says she didn't like it), Stevie re-recorded several songs from the original turned in version from 02/24/1993, including:

"Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind"
"Jane"
"Unconditional Love"
AND, I've just realized in my working on this project, that the "original mix" of "Listen To The Rain" on the 02/24/1993 Master Reel is a completely different version than the final release on the album! I just thought it was a different mix. But, nope, it's a totally different recording, not just remixing/adding instruments.

NOT to be confused with the 1991 recording of "Listen To The Rain" which was to be the first single for TimeSpace.

I love reading your posts -- you always have these nuggets of info that are so interesting.

So, questions:

To expand on the 1991 recording of "Listen to the Rain"; what is the store with the recording of new material? Was it all recorded at the same time or were BonJovi and Michaels after? I don't know a lot about Timespace beyond the stories I've seen Stevie tell about pressure to record those songs, etc.

First off, thanks! I find Stevie's history and mythology almost as enthralling as her songs!

Second: "Listen To The Rain" and the whole TimeSpace era are so filled with secrets it seems. In Spring 1991, Ginny Kamano sent out an official letter to the fans, talking about Stevie's upcoming new single, "Listen To The Rain", which was produced and co-written with Jon Bon Jovi. I used to think Ginny got the writing facts messed up a bit, until a few years ago I found the very first copyright for "Listen To The Rain" with JBJ listed as one of the writers of "Listen To The Rain", along with Stevie and those 2 guys from the band Venice. All copyrights afterwards do not list him as an author of the song.

In that same letter, Ginny also mentions "Love's A Hard Game To Play" ("done with Poison") and "Desert Angel", but no mention at all of "Sometimes It's A Bitch". Only later in Early Summer of 1991 does Ginny mention "Sometimes It's A Bitch" being recorded as the first single. There is ALSO a copyright for an Atlantic cassette single release of "Listen To The Rain" with the b-side of "Desert Angel", which really blew my mind!

So, I got to wondering: since the TimeSpace Tour started in July 1991 in Houston, with no album until September, did Atlantic delay the album's release while making Stevie record a new single to replace the presumably-rejected-at-the-last-minute "Listen To The Rain"? Of course, the tour dates would already have been set in motion, but the album could be delayed. Was this why there was no album during the tour?

Other tidbits:

One newspaper interview from 1991 has Stevie mentioning that she recorded "Sometimes It's A Bitch" Jon's way, even though she didn't like it. But, after he finished the project and moved on, Stevie re-recorded the song more to her liking, so it would sound like a song she did write, and she was pleased with her version.

In Fall 1990, during the final leg of the Behind The Mask tour, Stevie already knew that Mick was blocking her putting the Rumours version of "Silver Springs" on TimeSpace. So, she decided to record a new version, as she legally could since she and her mother own the rights to the song itself. However, the NUMBER ONE selling point for the in-progress Fleetwood Mac box set was the CD inclusion of "Silver Springs"; nothing else mattered on that compilation. So, WB (which owns Atlantic) discouraged Atlantic from letting Stevie release a new version (that I have a good source confirming that she did record in Late 1990), so that the original "Silver Springs" could have maximum impact on sales for the 1992 box set, The Chain. So, Stevie was not happy about that as well, and her new "Silver Springs" went on the shelf (but she hoped to put it on Street Angel, but that never happened either.)

These new cassettes we got also contradict Stevie's stories about re-recording certain Street Angel songs after Klonopin detox in January 1994. These cassettes have the preliminary beginnings of these new versions in June 1993, well before the Klonopin detox.

I try to find official sources (like copyrights, which tell a lot of stories!), official letters from Stevie's camp, plus the close source here and there. Some of the more outlandish stuff I tend to downplay, like this one I was told in 1997: The clips-only version of the video for "Sometimes It's A Bitch" was originally put together as the video for Stevie's new version of "Silver Springs". It seems like a cool bit of info, but then it also seems like something a fan would dream up. Who knows?

Wow! Cool info. Thanks for sharing. It's stuff like this that keeps me hitting the refresh button.

Someday, someone is going to find the tapes, tales and tidbits from the making of The Wild Heart. On that day, the paroxysms of excitement I will experience will send me into a new dimension. I hope that day comes soon.

Surely someone in Dallas knows someone who knows someone who knew...

That's great info! I had no idea about Silver Springs being rerecorded?!

I meant to include another question -- wasn't "Listen to the Rain" supposed to be the first single from "Street Angel"? Was this pre-rehab or post?

"Unconditional Love" was sent to radio stations in August 1993 on a promo tape, announcing it as the first single for Street Angel, which was to be released in September 1993. This was our first glimpse into the album. It is the later recording, but a slightly different mix on this promo clip.

Single choices changed often, with "Blue Denim" listed as the first single for Street Angel on Atlantic's upcoming release list in January 1994, then "Unconditional Love" again, then "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind". I never saw anything about "Listen To The Rain" being a single, but I could have easily missed that.

In January 1994, Atlantic released the track listing for the March release of Street Angel:

Blue Denim
Rose Garden
Street Angel
If You Were My Love
Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
Greta
Inspiration
I Call You Missing
Destiny
Listen To The Rain
Just Like A Woman
Unconditional Love
Love Is Like A River
Playing In God's Garden

No "Jane" or "Kick It" (or "Thousand Days").

Supernaut: someone is Dallas DID give me some information about The Wild Heart when I interviewed Gordon Perry in Summer 1996. That's when he told me about Iovine hating "Julia" and axing it from both Bella Donna and The Wild Heart. Also, that the songs Gordon produced for The Wild Heart were "Wild Heart", "Destiny", "Julia", "Gate And Garden" and "All The Beautiful Worlds", all five here in DALLAS!

It makes sense to me that Iovine hated "Julia". Like "Mirror Mirror" and "Belle Fleur" and some of the other songs that have been kicked from record to record over the decades, it never seemed fully realized.

Sorry, I know I'm OT.

Ah, but Gordon said "Julia" was Stevie's favourite song on Bella Donna, and it killed her when Iovine dumped it at the very last minute. That's why she had Gordon re-record the song with her in Dallas in 1982, but, as exec producer, Iovine again cut it from the final album. Gordon said it was important to Stevie for "Julia" to be on The Wild Heart since it was partly about her and Robin. Stevie was Lily and Robin was Julia from the Jane Fonda/Vanessa Redgrave movie, Julia. (Which the song "Impossible Task" is also written with inspiration from).

Interesting.

I'm not surprised to hear that, either. "Julia" and those other songs are like the Stevie Nicks apocrypha. They've got all the big Stevie themes - the mystery, the mythos, the pathos, the drama - but somehow, in my opinion at least, she (or maybe THEY) never quite NAILED it, so they never made the final cut. For whatever reason.

Listening to the (crappy sounding) WH "Julia", it actually sounds like Iovine maybe didn't GET it. The production, to my ear, sounds all wrong for the song.

Again, apologies for going OT.

It's all new news to me:

The Time Space drama...

Listen to the Rain slated to be the new single

Silver Springs re-recorded

Sometimes It's a Bitch - two versions

It appears that Stevie doesn't have as much executive/artistic control over her music as her the studio producers. That is very surprising. Does she defer to them because she feels they are making the right marketing decisions, or does she have no choice in the matter?

Good luck with the Street Angel project. I'd love to hear the final product. Obviously there are various versions/mixes, and material we never knew existed! It's mind-boggling how songs get bounced around in various forms through the years.

Mike: I truly appreciate the time you and others involved have put into refining the demos and then sharing them. I was reading the history behind the songs and find it really fascinating, it's those little things you pieced together. Through the sharing of the demos and songs from the Street Angel era I have grown to actually like the album more and more as I listen to them. I never really thought much about SA, I much preferred Bella Donna, Wild Heart, and TIS. It seemed to me that Stevie lost something with the SA album. I think it was momentum, but not so much from the Klonopin but from like an inner shift in her direction. In my humble opinion it seemed like Stevie had to switch up to keep going in her career and she didn't know which way to go, it seemed like she had sold a part of her, "Wild Heart!"

I hope you mother is doing better, your in my thoughts and prayers!

Interesting original track list! I could totally hear "Street Angel" going into "If You Were My Love".

So basically if we take what we have off ENCHANTED that's the opening 3 song sequence of Street Angel?

This label BBR has been reissuing The Pointer Sisters albums....they are reissuing their album BREAK OUT as a 2 disc set -- the original 1983 release then the more famous remixed 1984 version.

Would a 2 disc Street Angel with the original and the revised be amazing?

Well, the evidence from the Street Angel Work Tapes would suggest that by January 1994, the new versions had already been recorded/remixed, so it would have been the album versions, not the Glyn Johns mixes from Enchanted. I suspect after leaving Klonopin detox in January 1994, Stevie and Atlantic were just trying to find the right time to release the album (that Summer hang-up Stevie has), maybe tweaking it a little. But the new versions were recorded/remixed in second-half 1993 before the detox, despite Stevie's stories.

We've only heard the Glyn Johns mix of "If You Were My Love"~ I wonder what it sounded like after adding in Waddy, Peter Michael, etc.

Mike, is "I Call You Missing" anywhere on the tapes? I'd like to try listening to SA in this running order but I don't have that song. However, looking at it though, I'm not sure about that running order - doesn't seem to flow that well, unlike the running order of IYD on the acetate version.

Listening to the (crappy sounding) WH "Julia", it actually sounds like Iovine maybe didn't GET it. The production, to my ear, sounds all wrong for the song.

I have to admit, I can see why this version didn't make it to WH. The "Take 5" demo of Juila is so passionate and full of sass, you can really feel Stevie take on this persona. This version sounds so lifeless compared to that. But I'm so happy you posted it. I love hearing all the different incarnations of these songs. It's fascinating.

It is not on the Original Master Reel 02/24/1993 at all.

I have one outtake/alternate mix in terrible quality. That's all I know of. But there is more Mike Campbell guitar in it.

EDIT: Just listened and it's not that bad sounding! The mix is very different, guitars buzzing away, different keyboards here and there, percussion, and Stevie has different vocals near the end.

Always welcome, Jeff!

I accidentally put "Street Angel" on there; we should all have supported Stevie and bought Enchanted already.

Since working with the Street Angel Work Tapes the last few weeks, I went back to the Glyn Johns mixes, which I've always held in such disdain. I still despise his wimpy "Blue Denim" and shortened "Destiny" (and "Inspiration" and "Just Like A Woman"), but, overall, I love them all now as alternate choices. Stevie's "Docklands" has way more backing and extra vocals by Stevie, but the GJ Mix has its own charms (buried beneath a solid piece of armour).

I guess Sara & Sharon got paid extra to come back in and do more backing vocals to "Playing In God's Garden" (and Waddy!), but the Original Mix is chilling, too. I no longer hate it.

I heard the GJ Mix of "Greta" two weeks before Street Angel was released in the USA, and I got used to that little extra tripping guitar in it, although I prefer Stevie's Mix, which drives harder and accentuates her vocals better.

And if I've helped in any way to make Street Angel not so hated... well, to quote "Priest Of Nothing": "I'm happy now!"

NO ONE knows how HORRIBLE it was on the Internet in 1995, when Stevie's staunchest fans were rejecting her and blasting her and just HATING her period. I got into so many fights! The AOL Stevie Boards were ENDLESS HATRED of Stevie by her own fans, who'd rather she'd died in an overdose after the "Gypsy" video was filmed, rather than her betraying their own rigid expectations of her.

And that Glyn Johns "Unconditional Love" is really pretty nice. Maybe it's the losslessness??? ;)

Maybe that's the difference: GJ focused on the instruments, not Stevie and her persona?

wasn't there also another version or another mix of "Violet & Blue" recorded or remixed for either "TimeSpace" or "Street Angel"????

I'll re-upload that link in the morning.

"Violet And Blue" was remixed (not re-recorded) in October 1990 for TimeSpace by Chris Lord-Alge, along with "Sleeping Angel", "Battle Of The Dragon" and "Blue Lamp".

Even in 1997 and 98ish when I first came to this board people were still dissing the SA period. It was nothing compared to the OLD Stevie that was reborn out of the SA era after she ditched Klonapin, got rid of the big boobs, lost 75lbs, and started singing like she used to sound. I think everyone back then hated SA era.

I know V&B has surfaced because I have it and SA is on Enchanted. If I recall correctly, the Chris Lord-Alge remix of Battle is on the UK CD single of "Sometimes It's A Bitch" correct? I seem to remember it sound slightly different, but what about "Blue Lamp"? Has that surfaced Mike? If so can you post that one? I don't have it and would love to :D

Is the Chris Lord Alge remix of "Battle" also on the special Japan CD EP?

"Violet And Blue" and "Blue Lamp" are only on the Master Reels. ***

"Battle Of The Dragon" is on A Hard Game To Play CD-EP (Japan) and the UK "Sometimes It's A Bitch" CD-single. (I think it is much clearer).

"Sleeping Angel" is on Enchanted.

***I will add those to my list to upload in the morning.

Yep, no "Docklands" either! Forgot that!

"I Call You Missing" remains missing so far. Hopefully, one day it will show up.

And that's the decision I disagree with most. How she swapped in Docklands, a song she didn't write and kick off any of those songs she did in fact write. Grr. I would have preferred i Call You Missing or If You Were My Love over that damn song lol

It's fascinating.

mind posting the take 5 of Julia? I have a bunch but none labeled as take 5

Thank you very much for posting these Mike. It's a real treasure trove.
It's especially great to hear so many unfamiliar songs from this period. I'm surprised that a song as great as "If You Were My Love" did not make the actual album.

And I'm happy that the rather upfront drumbeats of the Johns Mixes were changed. The late Thom Panunzio did a great job with producing the final version.

I prefer the final mixes for the most part, but have learned to appreciate these others, especially those that are different recordings, not just mixes.

Stevie must've loved "Docklands" ~ she performed it in concert. I love the album version with her extra wails in the background, and the "Hold on..."s at the end.

Oh my goodness, I am so glad I didn't get the internet until '98, I would have been so saddened to read anything relating to this (it saddens me enough now!). How can people who call themselves genuine 'fans' say that they would rather Stevie died?! :( Shocking!

At the time I remember I was disappointed with SA but I didn't hate it! I thought that 'Docklands' was a bad choice, that the lyrics on 'Street Angel' were poor and that 'Jane' was kind of embarrassing but I didn't hate it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, it helps us understand what utter pain Stevie went through because of Klonopin (while taking it, the detox itself and the vulnerability she felt after it). This helps us all understand why SA is the way it is!

Thank you Mike for your wonderful work with these unreleased versions and for all the fascinating insights into the background information, you are an angel

Have you ever driven around with the windows open blaring out the album version of "Docklands"? I recommend it! And when it gets to the end, with those crazy keyboards, and all the Stevie overdubs, urging to "Give me your hand! Hold on...! Give me your hand... I-I-I-I-I beg of you...!", just crank it and enjoy Stevie's voice and passion.

And Stevie did have passion on Street Angel. It's been 17/19 years ~ get over the disappointment that Stevie gained weight ~ damn! Stevie's voice on "Destiny", "Blue Denim", "Inspiration", "Love Is Like A River", "Rose Garden" (her self-harmonies!!!)... ALL are as impassioned as ever, and some with more emotion than Behind the Mask and The Other Side Of The Mirror.

I'm not saying I didn't have any disappointment with Street Angel back in June 1994, but it was a part of Stevie's tapestry. History cannot change. And I LOVE Street Angel, faults and all.

I agree with you about 'Behind the mask', it was lack lustre to say the least but I adore OSOTM (with the exception of a couple of tracks) as it's where I became a true Stevie fan:) And as for the weight that was never an issue for me, I was just happy that Stevie was still around and releasing new music!

I remember hearing about these fanzines but never seeing any of them. And I would be very interested in reading the interview with gordon perry. Are these fanzines (or just that interview) available here, or anywhere on the internet? If not, I wonder if people who have any of these old fanzines would consider scanning them and posting them in a thread here?
And thanks Mike, for all the SA info. I wasn't on the old AOL boards but did have to do a lot of Stevie-defending back in those days. I remember how eagerly I waited for Street Angel and how it just kept getting delayed and then when I finally got it, appreciating it for for all of its Stevie quirk-but knowing it was going to be a tough sell to the rest of the planet!

My copies are stored away in a Vault, along with about 15 years of other Stevie fanzines. I dug some out last year regarding the original line-up of Rock A Little in November 1984. I'll try to get at them again soon.

Mine embarrass me now. I was even more arrogant then! In 1995-1997, I was trying so hard to defend Stevie when EVERYONE ELSE wanted her to turn into, and I QUOTE: "Sarah MacLachLan, Tori Amos, Loreena McKinnot, Bonnie Raitt, ANYONE ELSE but STEVIE NICKS!"

Open any other thread here; you'll find the same stuff.

Mike, I couldn't agree more, I think the Street Angel era is easily one of Stevie's best vocal periods, certainly of the modern era (although I find that she's sounding pretty awesome now as well). I think she sounds great through most of the album, until we hit Jane of course.

So, what exactly are the mixes that are on Enchanted? I'm sure someone's told me before. Are they the same as the '93 master mixes or no?

mikebise

Yes, the 02/24/1993 Master Reel Mixes are the same ones as on Enchanted:

"Destiny"
"Street Angel"
"Blue Denim"
"Rose Garden"

I accidentally posted the Master Mix of "Street Angel" above, which I did not mean to do since it is a commercially available song. But I'm too lazy to delete it.

But those four, plus what I posted above, are the original 1993 Glyn Johns mixes. There are several other mixes/versions of many of the Street Angel songs, but those are the original mixes from that particular Master Reel.

Mike,

Is it true that "Battle of the Dragon" was recorded specifically for "American Anthem" and was not a left over from "Rock a Little"? I was always under the impression that it was an outtake from "Rock a Little".

mikebise
07-09-2011, 02:44 PM
Well, that is what Gordon told me. However, with the 1984 recordings we've recently uncovered, the music sounds pretty much the same from 1984 to January 1986 or so, when the soundtrack version of "Battle Of The Dragon" was supposedly recorded.

"I have to believe him..." ??? Not sure, unless Stevie sang new vocals over the 1984 track, but Gordon specifically said he did not produce the earlier versions. And maybe it's all new music for the soundtrack. I'm not the best at picking up those things, just Stevie's voice.

I don't know if anyone has posted this version of Jane or even cares but it's pretty good. Stevie's singing her own back-ups.
