Today I just gave my boss my two weeks notice because of bickering for my vacation time for the end of August for the up coming tour of Stevie's doing.I handed the dates to him and try to work a deal out for geting four days off .I could not take off the whole week off because of the company rules goes as follows.I cant take a vacation between Aug 15 thru Dec 20 because of the holiday season. He gave me 3 days which would of been monday 29 Boston Show ,tuesday 30 SPAC show.I come to work wednesday the 31st.Take off sept 1st for the PNC Holmdel show .and come back to work friday sept 2 .He said .he cant give me friday, but agreed on me having those three days off.but work for two.So I said today I did not mind rushing home from Saratoga NY to come in on wednesday .I not going to have a problem on doing so.but I would be beat and tired all day to work safely..Last 9 years they know I go out on the road to see Stevie .I do understand the rules of the company because I got stuck alot of times shorthanded with help on the job.I did not have any conflicts with the vacation time scheduling. On last years mini-tour which was about the same dates. At that time he did groned about the three days that I taken off for the Turningstone and the Atlantic City show dates .He said go ahead .take them off. So at the end of todays talks the big bubble burst about the friday after the PNC show because I needed some R'n'R time after runing around. He said NO you got to come into work friday.OK by that time I said to him that will be it then.So today I'm stepping down from my 10 year job over for one day I could not take off .
Ok Sorry about the longwinded airing out my problems out here on the Ledge.

Not getting any sympathy out of me. I hope you're independently wealthy because, in today's economy, that has to be the dumbest move you could make.

Man, I love Stevie, but I would never sacrifice a good job for her. The high I get from a concert is magnificent, but it won't pay the bills. I don't think Stevie would want people to bankrupt themselves "because of" her. In fact, I think she would probably be appalled at the idea.

But hey, it's your life.

I am so happy for you. I've seen this so many times before..those in "authority" dictating what days people can and can't take& vacations etc. It's all about them feeling powerful about 'owning' someone's time. The best thing to do is remove that from them.
Most people are scared to make that move so good for you!

I hope you can get another job some where else soon, sorry to hear that you had to quite to get Stevie time from work I can understand that but I can't lose my job over her and I am a big fan like everyone else here but I have to pay my bills and eat and have shelter and Stevie ain't going to support me so you did what you had to do I hope you can find a job soon too because CT is not doing that well probably why she doesn't have a date here yet either who knows but I do see date or feel she would play here too. I am hoping a CT date if not will go to the Jones Beach show or Boston not sure but I am holding my breathe until a ct show comes I do feel there will be a date there is room for ct date I do see her performing at Mohegan Sun Arena though I am not ruling out Foxwoods, Comcast Thearte and Oakdale Thearte and Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. I am looking and there is dates open for her to play here.

I recently put my resignation in for a job that paid well and looks good on paper but when it comes to reality, it was a piece of crap company that was killing my spirit, making me sick daily, and overall just a lousy place to spend 10-12 hours a day. People don't always understand but sometimes you know when it's the right time to call it a day and move on. Now, I didn't quit over a concert...but I suspect you didn't either. Sounds like the time off to see Stevie was just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. As long as you have a plan (THIS is key) and aren't going to be out on the street, more power to you. You live once, make it count!

I can understand that stressful job and doing it for a long time and when you want to take a time off to relax and sometimes that how I do my time off too I will take a week off when Stevie or FM come around but I only go to one show usually when they play here in CT maybe hit Boston or NYC shows if I can swing it cause I am closer to NYC and boston is about a 2 hour drive for me where NYC is about 45 min. to an hour train ride.

money isnt everything...my hubby is a lawyer and he is constantly working and on call, we actually have a lot of money but he can never take off to do anything fun so what does it matter? I am hoping he will quit. He is feeling bad all the time too, and I can't find anything physically wrong with him except for stress. He would get the same story for trying to take off....clients need you blah blah blah. If he does quit, I can support the fam though so I really don't care if he does. My job is so the opposite. I am a doctor in a 2 doc practice and my partner and I swap when we want to be off, and most weeks I work 3 days. Just my 2 or 3 cents.

The whole deal was not about getting time off to go see Stevie.Other things like more pay.As we all are.Probably all of us probably did not receive cost of living raise in years.I've been stuck at $10.50 an hour for 5 years now for warehouse duties. My bosses as I said never gave me a runaround for taking time off to go see Stevie or visiting reletives until now. After the fire cools down they may bang their heads together and say to themselves we are gioing to loose an good employee that has a pefect attendence and self starter and a awesome worker.I have to agree this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.I earned Two weeks vaca .I do deserve to get them when I want them.

Wow...harsh, dude.

Nowhere in his initial post did he say he was leaving for any other reason besides not getting the time off to go see Stevie. His company has a policy that employees can't take vacation time between August 15th and December 20th. Yet, his boss DID give him 3 days off during that period. Sounds like the boss bent the rules for him.

I have interviewed hundreds of applicants for jobs. Odds are if you left your last job of 10 years because your boss wouldn't give you one additional day during a period when by company policy you couldn't take any days off you wouldn't be getting the job you applied for. How would he truthfully answer the question "Why did you leave your last job?"

Sorry you were so offended Jamie

MacMan... could you have gotten someone else to cover your shifts? Seems like a silly thing to step down from your job over something like that. That said, there must be other issues (like the fact that you make $10.50 for the last 5 years) that have built up and are making you ready to leave. I hope you find another gig. :o

I agree 100%.....money isn't everything! Life is way too short to be distressed by stress. I just quit a twenty yr career of teaching special education because of the stress. At the very end not only myself, but my other two colleauges as well, were working 16 hr days Monday through Friday and 8 - 10 hours Saturdays and Sundays. No lie!

I feel so much better! I can feel the energy coming back to me. I felt horrible physically and after I quit I no longer was in pain, had indigestion, and started sleeping at night. I have options so I am not worried.

Not sure that I would ever disclose to my employer that I was needing/wanting to take time off to follow a rock star/band/sports team whatever around.... First, it's none of their damn business and second, it doesn't matter what you want the time off for, if you're entitled to it, you're entitled.

I understand about a job that sucks the life out of you...you do get held in by the "golden handcuffs" (ie good money) for a time, but eventually, the toll on your mental and physical health and the impact to your family life aren't worth it. (not saying that's necessarily your situation, but certainly at times has been mine)

Money is the root of happiness.

I'll tell you what the best feeling in the world is: To be unhappy in one job, to find yourself another job with a better compensation package & better work conditions while still employed at the first job, & then to GIVE NOTICE to the mofos -- professionally & tastefully. Your final two weeks at the crappy job will be two of the best weeks of your life: you'll be high as a kite, you'll sleep like a baby, & you'll be as giddy as a giddyap.

Professionally??? Tastefully???

No. The best feeling in the world is the feeling of freedom as you walk out the door after throwing the keys to the office/company vehicle at your ahole of a boss who has pushed your buttons one too many times. There's nothing like seeing his expression turn to shock and dismay, as he frantically chases you and pleads with you to come back. There are no laughs quite as satisfying as the laughing you do when your coworkers call and tell you how he is busting his butt trying to do your job, how it will take him months and months to replace you because of company policy and how it appears to be putting him into an early grave!

But this can only be done if you have a job lined up that is as good or better. I hope you do... Where do you live? I am working weekends, but I am still going to be able to see Stevie and Lindsey on their tour many many times, without missing a day of work. Would this have been an option for you?

Actually David is correct. Ten years is a long time to be at a company (no matter what it is) and any new GOOD, decent paying, good benefit position's prospective employer will want to see your resume and references. You have to HOPE your boss doesn't say, "He quit because he didn't get off all the dates to see Stevie Nicks." What they write is different from what they say. In theory, they should only be saying you worked there from this date to that date. But the reality is sometimes different. It's usually better to not burn your bridges in your career choices.

I agree. For some reason I do have a gut feeling they will be singing a different tune by the end of this upcoming week.It I like the tune they will be singing to be to keep me on board.Maybe I may reconcider to stay. The second man in charge at the warehouse is my best friend that comes to the local Stevie/FM concerts when Stevie/FM comes to Connecticut. So he is not happy with the man in charge with the final decision.I'll see.

It was more issues then Stevie's upcoming tour. This was the issue that broke the camals back.as they say.I did came up with agreement of those days off the shows but not a full week with them. All I just wanted that friday after the PNC show in Holmdel for getting back to home safely.if I did agree with him .I would be useless
that friday to him and it would be a major on the job safety issue in the meantime.
Oh yes .a great new album .I hope she will do the Wiltern setlist.

I've had jobs that blocked out certain times for vacation. It's unfortunate that the Stevie shows you wanted to attend fell during that time. It sounds as though you don't really believe your job is actually gone; rather you are thinking that this move will open their eyes to your worth, etc. I hope it was a good decision for you, though I have to say I think it's a terribly risky move in this economical climate. I am working with some folks who have been unemployed for YEARS and would give just about anything for a paycheck. I see people really depressed due to their unemployment. Good luck to you.

Exactly. Sounds like an oppressive work environment. Was it like that in other ways, Macfanforever?

My parents are both very good people with a good work ethic. I swear this screws them a lot of times. My mom really didn't get her due in terms of salary/leveling until she was out with breast cancer and nobody could do her job in her absence. How soon they forget though because the company is up to its old tactics. In her latest review her boss said, "I can't give you an 'excellent' rating because we can only give that to 20% of employees." So now they have an affirmative action policy on performance. #awesome.

What David said is true and the ideal way to go out is to have another better job lined up. I would see if you can keep this job until that happens.

I read an article not long ago that compared U.S. workers' yearly allotment of vacation time w/ those of other countries. Basically, we're one of the only industrialized nations where employers are not required by law to offer vacation time. Most countries in Europe mandate anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks a year.

Kena

A few things...some of which others have already touched on.

Macfanforever- What holiday season starts in August? $10.50 an hour? Seriously? I worked at cracker barrel almost 10 years ago and made $10.00 an hour as a cook, flipping eggs and making the bacon.

I think you should get busy looking for another job ASAP and if your previous employer tells a potential employer that you quit because of Stevie...well then you can explain the other reasons. Also, 10 years on a job does show you've been a very loyal employee. I'd think that would stand out more than what you wanted to do on your vacation.

If all else fails, blame it on your wild heart. It's really not your fault anyways, it's just your wild wild heart

Good Luck!

Hmmm... and Europe is also (generally speaking) the home of double-digit chronic unemployment, a bloated and lazy entitlement class, a 15% value-added tax baked into the cost of everything sold and among the highest personal income tax rates in the world. Oh, and I'm sure that the debt crises in Portugal, Spain, Ireland and Greece are somehow related to generous entitlements combined with reduced per capita productivity. Look at Greece- where the whole country is about to go into bankruptcy, yet they are still rioting in the streets because they want to raise the retirement age above 53.

Reading this thread...

I am reminded again at how lucky I am to have a job right now. A good job, too, where I am paid well and allowed a generous amount of freeedom when it comes to scheduling. The benefits are good, too, and I have the option of multiple work locations (even from home when necessary).

That said...I have quit many jobs in my youth. Sometimes I just left without saying anything to anyone. One time I was on my way to work when I stopped at a pay phone and called them to say I wasn't ever coming back. One time I walked out in a flurry after telling my cocaine-addled boss to fu*k herself in front of customers and co-workers. Another time I wrote a resignation letter saying I was wasting my life, and that there was no point in being miserable for a paycheck. I still believe this, by the way - yes - money is important and necessary in our modern world, but later in life when you're old or dying, one of the worst things possible would be to look back and feel like you wasted your life doing something you hated, for someone you didn't even like only to feel unrewarded at the end of it all. You can never make up that time. You only get this one life. Make the most of it. No job is worth being unhappy for, and no job is worth looking back years later and feeling regret over, regardless of economic conditions.

However, sometimes we have to suck it up and compromise for a while. No job is worth quitting if you're going to end up homeless, or hungry, or sick. As an HIV+ man, I have stuck with a terrible job more than once just so I had medical coverage. After all, very few jobs are worth quitting if you're going to end up dead.

Anyway, MacFanForever, I wish you the best.

I am so happy for you. I've seen this so many times before..those in "authority" dictating what days people can and can't take& vacations etc. It's all about them feeling powerful about 'owning' someone's time. The best thing to do is remove that from them.
Most people are scared to make that move so good for you!

Um, no. It's all about running a successful business/office/practice & making sure you have adequate staff to do so. Should I tell my patients "sorry, there aren't any doctors here to treat you, they all wanted the week after Christmas off so you're screwed." Please.

I'm with you Terry.

Well said Jannie.

I dare anybody to try to make me feel bad about any of the jobs I've quit, or the way I quit them.

What were the jobs & how did you quit them? Let's discuss.

So true.

Macfan, your original post basically said that you quit cuz your boss wouldn't give you more time off to see Stevie. If that's true, it's really very immature & unprofessional of you. However, if there are other reasons (low pay, poor treatment, low moral at work) then maybe you should have stated them in the first place, instead of getting pissy with people for calling you out & thinking you made a silly/dumb move.

That said. Now you're going to be on unemployment, right? Not by necessity, but by choice. Even though you had a paying job. Well, have a nice paid vacation, courtesy of working taxpayers.

^P, he won't be able to get unemployment, more than likely. Since he quit, and was not fired or laid off, he will not be able to collect unless he appeals, goes to a hearing and is able to prove that he left for valid reasons such as working under duress or being harrassed.

See, that's what I always thought, but then I heard that if someone quits & the employer OK's it, that person might be able to get unemployment. Doesn't sound right to me - if you give up a job, you're out of luck, IMO.

If you can't get unemployment, Macfan, I take back my last statement. Hope you have a large savings account, or lots of belongings to sell on Craigslist. Good luck to you.

Yeah, it does depend. I had a friend here in Indiana who was laid off then accepted a new job within a few days. The new job was awful and she quit. I didn't think she would get unemployment but she documented the reasons why she quit and the employer did not contest and she got the benefits. Also, though, she was probably still under unemployment on the job she was laid off from because she only worked at the new job for a few weeks.

So, it does depend. I was just saying that Macfan should not count on getting unemployment. I don't know if his other reasons for quitting were compelling enough or not but quitting for Stevie most likely wouldn't win the day.

Ok I do realize the first post was very vague with the full story.I probably was venting my frustrations out at the time without thinking.I apologize for that.Ok let me get down to the details of why this happen.Ok I worked at this firm about ten years.perfect attendence never sick.good work ethics.selfstarter.The place is a small warehouse with about 25 employees.Ok since we sell items to stores like Bed Bath and Beyond,Target and Amazon,The stores order goods early .like August.Ok at this time the xmas holiday season starts and it will go to mid december. The rules are to limit employees vac time to a couple of days a week or none in sept ,oct and november.Ok thats the company rules. The working conditions are probably average of any warehouse in this country.low pay scale as mentioned earlier .yes lower then Crackerbarrel. As noted earlier .LOL,crappy benefits package. Again the turnover of employees is very high.yes indeed.I was the bozo that hanged on all those years,Ok the last couple of years were getting hard putting up with some of the other co-workers and other personal details I cant get into at this time.Plus no yearly inflation wage increases. Ok trying getting time off for the Stevie upcoming concerts.I never had a problem with this employer or any other past employer to that matter.Yes I do understand the rules,I had scheduled monday .tuesday off.come to work wednesday.Thursday was scheduled to be off for the PNC, Holmdel show and friday I wanted off for a stayover in NJ.Ok they told me I cant take friday off because I could not take more then 3 days at a time off.But one day was really going to shorthanded him that week.Ok at that time I was pisted off and said thats it for working here. This was the straw that broke the camels back.
Yes as mentioned.I cant put a claim in at unemployment.I'm not planning on it.I understand that.Again I'm not quiting for this Stevie tour .sorry again please read closely and slow.

Hmmm... and Europe is also (generally speaking) the home of double-digit chronic unemployment, a bloated and lazy entitlement class, a 15% value-added tax baked into the cost of everything sold and among the highest personal income tax rates in the world.

So you were mad that they wouldn't make an exception & bend the rules for you, which added onto the frustration you were already feeling about this job. Yes?

You know, just a thought. If you really don't like this job, why not search around for something different? I don't know about everywhere else, but $10.50/hr is about average for a warehouse position requiring no education or certifications. It's not a bad paying job, tbqh. If you want to make more, have you looked into trades training? Like machinist/factory work, construction, electric, plumbing, HVAC, computers, health care aide? IOr going to college to further your education & get a better paying career? I know that's not an option for everyone, I'm just curious about your situation.

Ya know, workers aren't indentured servants in this country. Anyone can quit a job for any reason. Why is it okay for an employer to just up and let an employee go when they decide he or she isn't working out, but if an employee decides the job isn't working out, that person is vilified for leaving? What's good for the goose is good for the gander, afaic.

As far as I know, unemployment insurance is paid for by the employer's payroll taxes - not the taxes of the general public. It's not welfare.

I didn't say it was welfare. But you're right, I made a hasty comment that wasn't correct - unemployment insurance is not directly paid for by those of us who are working.

As for your first comment - of course you aren't forced to work anywhere & should be able to choose. But some people do consider it irresponsible to quit a job without another one lined up, esp. in this economy.

I'm in the middle of being let go from my job. I've been off 6 months after a (work comp) shoulder surgery. They called me a month ago and told me that my position has been back filled and I have 16 weeks to find a job internally. After that, if I don't find one internally, they'll give me severance and send me out. I've been there 11 and a half years... Scary. But I've put up with some really bad **** in the past 3 years there, and I don't think I should let myself get worked up about it anymore. So, I'm fulfilling what I've always said I'd do if I ever quit my job... I'm going to school in the fall. No one should have a job that they absolutely hate.

Yes. Someone finally summed up exactly how I feel.

As for your first comment - of course you aren't forced to work anywhere & should be able to choose. But some people do consider it irresponsible to quit a job without another one lined up, esp. in this economy.
I agree with this as well. I've planned to leave my job for almost 3 years now. I was just waiting for the opportunity and the right time to leave. RIGHT NOW is my opportunity and right time. And I'm SO looking forward to it. I feel like I can't plan anymore than I already have. It's go time.

:blob1: I'm so excited for you. Sometimes getting let go truly is a blessing. I was laid off from a job at a dying company in the past, and once my round of layoffs was over, morale was awful. I knew I wouldn't have wanted to be there. It was scary and I was off for a long time. But I found another job, much better suited to my skills and talents, and life is better for it. One day you will look back on this and be so glad the nightmare is over.

It's go time! I like that. So many of us are struggling with doing the work of 2 or more people, flat pay or even pay cuts, and the looming fact that we could lose our jobs at any moment. We really do have to live for right now and not some hazy point in the future. There is no such as job security but we can find security in our own abilities and persistently find ways to create income. Once we find our cojones it all falls into place. ;)

I have a friend on FB who is training to be a nurse and I'm sure she'd lend an ear when you needed it. I think you're talking about nursing, is that right?

I've been thinking about going back to school myself. I like what I do but I think I am supposed to be serving the greater good better than by editing computer software textbooks. I definitely don't want to be a nurse because of the lack of respect and inherent sexism. That would drive me out of my mind and I have the utmost respect for nurses. With all of that responsibility nurses deserve all the respect in the world as far as I am concerned.

That would be a hard situation for me. I have never seen Stevie before, but I love her more than anything in the world & if she was close I would do everything I could to see her, but lose my job? I would have to think long & hard about it, and what Stevie would think of me, because that's important to me.

Hope you find something else soon!

Hi All.First .I want to thank all of you for your support that you gave me for the last two weeks.Heres an update.Today was the last day at work. Now I got time to set some gouls.I do want to get some more schooling on cumputer science.Plus take a course in audio engineering right here in town at the same recording studio where Fleetwood Mac recorded at.That will be the ticket for me entering in the field of broadcasting. And in the meantime I will hit the pavement to see whats left out there .
which is not much.Anyway Today I did chat with my bosses and leave giving them a positive attitude about me and told me again .After my journey on the road in August with Stevie. Please give us a call .If I'm still available.I know I will lose my position. But it was to stressfull for me for the last couple of years anyway.part time.
I will have no problem.
