View Full Version : Re-Record That Song, Stevie! Poll

After the amazing results Stevie has had with re-recording "Annabel Lee", "Moonlight" and "My Heart" for In Your Dreams, what other completely unreleased song would you have Stevie and Dave work their magic on for her next hopeful album (or Fleetwood Mac's album, as long as Dave produces it)? Maybe Stevie could add to an old song, like she did with "Planets Of The Universe" and "Lady From The Mountains", or she could keep the words mostly the same, like "Sorcerer" and "Smile At You".
Play along and have FUN!

I'd love her to re-record Smile At You. Again. I like to pretend the SYW version doesn't exist
Joan of Arc, Have No Heart, At The Fair or Space Needle could be very effective, too.

Good choices! But I think "Joan Of Arc" is perfect for a (much-needed) re-release of Tango In The Night. It's so stark and Mid-to-Late Eighties perfection in its depiction of the pampered rock star lifestyle gone tragic.
Then again, I never expected Stevie & Dave to add such life to "Lady From The Mountains" and also drive "Annabel Lee" into the stratosphere! So, maybe they could do a new "Joan Of Arc", as long as Stevie uses her "Solder's Angel" creepy-but-cool voice!

I would love to have "What Has Rock & Roll Ever Done For You." I would love to hear what she could do with it now.

For me, it's all about 'Forsaken Love.' But, I voted for 'Have No Heart' because I am so in love with Stevie's literary-inspired songs right now (Thank you, Annabel Lee, Wide Sargasso Sea, Running Through The Garden)

Hey, we'll have to do a Round Two one of these things, right?
"What Has Rock And Roll Ever Done For You?" and "Forsaken Love" are inspired choices!

I think the song that should have been in the poll is Forest of the Black Roses.

Yes!
"The Dealer" gets my vote. Could really suit her voice right now, & I love the lyrics.
I also love "She Still Loves Him", but I don't think she could ever do better than the rasp on the original outtake.
I think "Baby Doll" would be another good one to try. It has that incomplete feel and a good (but not great) vocal, so I think nobody would be terribly offended if Dave tweaked it.
"All the Beautiful Worlds" is another one that might be great in an updated version.

"All The Beautiful Worlds"! Well, we'll get a Round Two!
Still, that song is so very The Wild Heart sounding~ should it be messed with? Maybe Stevie & Dave could re-work Stevie's 1974/1975 song, "You Won't Forget Me", which lent some of its lyrics to "All The Beautiful Worlds". Stevie would ROCK "You Won't Forget Me" nowadays!!!!!!!! And then Stevie could talk all about it in interviews, "I wrote this in Late 1974 before I even joined Fleetwood Mac, I don't remember at all who it's about..." etc. LOL!
I put "All the King's Horses" and "Castaway" on the list as examples of songs that needed some polishing up and could end up as great as "Moonlight" possibly. I guess not.

That's where I think Dave's creativity could come in. Yes, the original outtake of ATBW from TWH is excellent, but it's very dated sounding, so I wouldn't mind hearing it changed a bit. I could see the song morphed into a "Bombay Sapphires" type sound. I would want them to keep Lori & Sharon's parts the same. For me, it all comes down to Stevie's voice. It sounded effortless in TWH days. IYD gives me hope that she might be able to match that sound.

I picked Julia. Although I would like her to re-record Sanctuary as well. Even though it's not on this list, and I don't think she'd have to change or add anything to either of these songs.

And that CONCERT, too, huh???!!! :woohoo:
Of course, I got The Wild Heart version of "Destiny" about 2 weeks before Street Angel was released in 1994, and I thought nothing could top the 1982 version. But, as time went on, I've come to appreciate the Street Angel version of "Destiny" much more.
Yes, I love Stevie's sad, depressed, out-of-control vocals from The Wild Heart version, but the one on Street Angel gives me hope and makes me smile. And her voice is beautiful!

The Dealer would make an awesome Fleetwood Mac Song, I can picture it starting out acoustic and then a killer chorus. Add some Lindsey guitar and the Fleetwood/McVie rythym section and we have ourselves a winner. Julia should wait till the next solo album, no way this song should stay in the vaults, it's amazing.

Oh yes! Totally agree with redoing You Won't Forget Me, instead of All The Beautiful Worlds. ATBW should be on a TWH re-release/update. That's pretty much a perfect outtake. Not a demo, not something that needs touching. You Won't Forget Me is a little gem of a song though, and would work well with her Soldier's Angel type vocals, I think.

i'm all about stevie in a dark place and SN is the darkest! i would love to hear properly recorded atmospheric production with this song! truly a haunting masterpiece. not sure if she would re-visit such a spot in her life, though.

"Destiny" is my favorite track on SA. I didn't love it live - they took out the best of the layered harmonies at the end - and I dislike the version on Enchanted. The version from TWH era is just okay for me. And as much as people slammed her for recycling lyrics to the song "Enchanted" (even though "Destiny" was written first), I always though that, conceptually, they should have been placed on the same album, with "Enchanted" as the young/energetic opener & "Destiny as the mature/reflective closer.
And I agree that "Sanctuary" could be good these days, too - though I do think the song could use some updating.

Smile at you and Thousand Days would be better if they were more like the demo versions, which I think were amazing!

I hope Stevie will eventually record and release most of her demo songs. She has at least two albums' worth of great material. It would be a shame if they never see the light of day. But it's been exciting to see that some of those long-standing demos have been recorded and emerged on soundtracks, b-sides and albums.

"Sanctuary" is my very favorite Stevie song released or unreleased. I just think it's beautiful. I would love if one day she would finally officially release it.

I didn't vote. I don't want a soul to touch some of those demo gems. "Julia" needs to stay as it is, and I'm very sure that there's no way that I would like a modern, finished version. The a capella "Dealer" is my favorite, and I don't think she could do justice to that version these days. Eh.
I would like a cleaned-up version of some of the scratchier recordings, but some of them are just holy. I think Old-Fashioned would really shine, and Blue Water is very lush and both would sound great with her voice as it is now.
When Secret Love was released, I truly hated it, though it has grown on me. Then again, My Heart version 2.0 SUCKS.

It's hard to say. In general, I'm not one of these "her demos are perfect" people, so I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with her recording or re-recording any of these.
Julia - I think Julia's time has come and gone, tho I wouldn't be upset if she did re-record and release this one. I just think it'd be better served being polished up and put out on a re-mastered Bella Donna.
Space Needle - I always thought this song was kind of a mess. If she can find someone who can make something listenable out of it, more power to her!
If You Were My Love - this one is a possibility, tho it's been attempted so many times. Out of all the songs on this poll, I'd say this one has the most potential. Tho I really do love the BD, Mirage, and SA versions.
Have No Heart - haven't listened to this one in a while, but from what I remember, it might be another possibility. And it would fit that whole Gothic literature theme Stevie seems to get into periodically.
The Dealer - like Julia, I think it's time has come and gone. I have to say that this was never a favorite of mine, tho. It's catchy, but there's something about it that annoys me and I can't put my finger on it.
She Still Loves Him - another possibility, altho it's never been a favorite of mine either.
Castaway - not a terribly memorable song for me. Maybe the fact that I can't remember anything about it at the moment says it all.
Cecelia - hmm...maybe. I dunno. I kinda like the demo, so I'd want her to keep that feel, but I think she could do this one some justice.
Beautiful Ghost - maybe; it's kinda catchy, but sounds a bit dated at this point. But who knows?
All the King's Horses - as with Space Needle, if she can find somebody to make something listenable out of it, more power to her.

I thought maybe "Beautiful Ghost" could get a Stevie/Dave updating to really make it work for today, although I enjoy it as it is.
I think "Castaway" has that potential as well, a little more structure.
I find "Julia" (in her many forms) perfect as is, but was wondering if anyone was willing to have it be updated, a la "Moonlight", which has turned out so well.

"China Doll"! Forgot that!
Last night, I was watching TV, with the Closed Captioning on just because, and it was some scary movie and a girl was running around an asylum trying to free other inmates at different cells' doors, and the CC said: "KNOCKING ON DOORS", and I thought, "There's another one Stevie could update!"

My choices are:
1. Smile at You (Throw out Lindsey's crappy-ass version and start over.)
2. All the Beautiful Worlds
3. Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger
4. She Still Loves Him
5. Space Needle (I agree the demo version is kind of messy. Clean up and record.)
Julia - I agree with Markolas. Julia's time has come and gone. Polish it and put on the Bella Donna remaster.

Ok, this may be way late...but, I'd like for her to go back and take the "Book Of Miracles" backing track and finish off "Juliet"...the TOSOTM version is a mess. I've heard amateur mash-ups of her vocal track of "Juliet" with the "Book Of Miracles" backing track and it just has so much potential, even though it wasn't quite right.

Yes, Baby Doll could be great! What have I got to sell? A pink satin dress, a silver tray, an abalony shell. I always loved those lines.
Also, All the Beautiful Worlds! The list of songs we get to vote for here is too limited and slanted.

All The Beautiful Worlds and Maker of Birds would be really good if given the Annabel Lee/ Moonlight treatment.
It's not a popular choice, but I've always loved "Beautiful Ghost".
I wish she'd revisit any of her late 80's demos, actually.

"Brilliant are your colours, baby..."
So, the three winner are:
"The Dealer"
"Julia"
"If You Were My Love"
Interesting point: "The Dealer" was written in 1978 and the other two both written in 1980. Stevie almost never resurrects this era when re-recording her older songs (only example I can think of is "If You Ever Did Believe" written in 1978). Historically, when pulling out an oldie for a new album, Stevie has usually gone with 3 eras of her songwriting:
Early -
"Sorcerer"
"Rose Garden"
"Candlebright"
Rumours -
"Secret Love"
"Smile At You"
"Planets Of The Universe"
Rock A Little -
"Love Is Like A River"
"Running Through The Garden"
"Thousand Days"
Remember, the poll wasn't Favourite Old Song, but what should Stevie re-record on an upcoming release. FUN!!!
Part 2???

Also, should Mirror Mirror being included? It originally was a circulated demo. It turned up as a b-side on the cassette single of Blue Denim. I think it was recorded for Rock a Little, but this one may have been re-recorded.

Nope, it was recorded in 1984, then dusted off and remixed for the b-side release in 1994. Just another take from those 1984 sessions.

I voted for "If You Were My Love" because of a youtube video of Stevie during her Rollingstone photo shoot back in the early 80's. The song was playing in the background and Stevie was siging it during her shoot and she made it sound so good and the song added something to the photo shoot that made her look hot!
