Hey folks,

I don't know if I'm on with this speculation, but here's a direct Nicks quote that was published today in the LA Times (talking about "Moonlight"):

"Nicks has already filmed a music video for the song, her favorite on the record, in which she excitedly said she chose to don Victorian-era costumes. Nicks has long had an affinity for dressing up. It's something that began, not surprisingly, on Halloween, when her mother would sew her long dresses. She's since created her own iconic style — a Gothic hippie look that includes long skirts, leotards, bolero jackets with Rhiannon sleeves and tall, suede platform boots."

If so- finally, a member of FM that chooses a decent song for a single release. Stevie and Lindsey have had so many dud choices between them (whether their choices or not) that this would be a step in the right direction, for me anyway.

Can't wait to see the clip!!!!

[Thanks guys for posting]

LOS ANGELES — Stevie Nicks was sauntering around a cavernous sound stage on the Sony lot in Culver City as her tiny dog, Sulamith, who was outfitted in a sweater, trailed behind her. It was Tuesday, only a few days before her Thursday concert at the Wiltern, which will celebrate the release of her first solo album in more than a decade, "In My Dreams," as well as her 63rd birthday. But it was dusty in the rehearsal space. And that upset her.

"This is a massive old place, and for me, it's hard, because it's very, very dusty, and I'm allergic to dust," she said, opting to sit in a stiff office chair instead of on a couch for fear that it would incite her allergies. "When I'm in here for eight hours, I get a bad feeling. It makes me feel like I'm flipping out."

Nicks doesn't like feeling out of control. That's why, for years, she has refused to write music with anyone. Even as a part of Fleetwood Mac — the seminal '70s British-American rock band that generated such hits as "Landslide," "Gold Dust Woman" and "Gypsy" — Nicks rarely sat down and collaborated with her fellow band members.

"I would write a song, put it on a cassette, and put it by the coffee pot for Lindsey (Buckingham) and say, 'Here's the song. You can produce it, but don't change it. Don't come back to me and say you want to change the words or the melody.' I didn't have a very good attitude," she acknowledged.

For the last six years, Nicks had been told by her label that she should wait to release another solo album (her last was 2001's "Trouble in Shangri-La") because Internet piracy was so rampant that the music industry was in decline. But when she returned to her home in the Pacific Palisades after 83 dates on the road with Fleetwood Mac, she decided she couldn't wait any longer. So she dug up a binder with 40 pages of poems and sent them to Dave Stewart, who has produced albums for artists such as his former band the Eurythmics, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Ringo Starr. To her surprise, Stewart actually read the poems and soon showed up at her doorstep with his guitar.

"He sat down, looked through the binder and said, 'OK, let's work on this poem.' And I said, 'You know, I don't really write songs with people — in the same room, anyway.' But he just started playing, and within 15 minutes, we had written a good song.

"Plus, we had a microphone hanging from the ceiling, and the fireplace was going, and it was cold and kind of fantastic," she recalled, brushing her wispy bangs out of her face. She had on an all-black outfit: a sheer chiffon top from one of her favorite labels, Morgane Le Fay, and slacks tucked into oversized Mukluk boots. A few chains decorated with tiny gold stars hung from her neck. She was wearing sunglasses inside.

Image has always been important to Nicks — so much so that it seems it was largely the ambiance of the space in which she recorded "In My Dreams" that fueled much of its creation. She worked on the album in a home that she owns but does not live in. She purchased it several years ago but quickly realized it was too big, so she bought a smaller house down the road.

As it turned out, though, the bigger home was the ideal place to make an album — and for months, the space was filled with musicians and friends, even a documentary crew. During that time, Nicks dug up stacks of her old journals. She still writes in a big leather-bound diary almost every day, recently documenting, for example, her performance on "Dancing With the Stars." Although a number of the songs on "In Your Dreams" are about her past — including "Secret Love," her first single that is allegedly about an affair she had with an unnamed '70s rocker — the album was actually inspired by something far more modern: the "Twilight" films.

While on a recent tour in Australia, Nicks went to see "New Moon." She found herself struck by the romance between Bella and her vampiric boyfriend, Edward, who ultimately leaves her to save her from having to become a vampire herself.

"When he turned around and left her, that part really just struck me very hard. You see her sitting in the bay window and just staring. And that has happened to me. It brought those memories flooding back to me."

Nicks has already filmed a music video for the song, her favorite on the record, in which she excitedly said she chose to don Victorian-era costumes. Nicks has long had an affinity for dressing up. It's something that began, not surprisingly, on Halloween, when her mother would sew her long dresses. She's since created her own iconic style — a Gothic hippie look that includes long skirts, leotards, bolero jackets with Rhiannon sleeves and tall, suede platform boots.

"People have latched on to my look because I've never changed it," she said. "You open a magazine and you say, 'Oh, Marc Jacobs is definitely doing the Stevie Nicks handkerchief skirt and riding jacket and top hat and scarf,' because that's what I wore then, and I still wear it now."

Knowing what her performance outfit will consist of also allows her to focus on the music, Nicks said. Days before her show on Thursday, Nicks said she was anxious about the prospect of unveiling her new songs to an audience for the first time.

She says she feels this is her best work to date — a sentiment many critics have agreed with. Meanwhile, "In Your Dreams," debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart earlier this month, selling 52,000 copies its first week out.

But Nicks, who does not own a computer, is fearful that the digital era may stop her new album from reaching as many people as she once did.

"We used to drive down Sunset, and on Tower Records there'd be a picture of your face, and the whole front of Tower Records would be your record. And you'd keep driving, and there would be a 50,000-foot billboard of you and your horse. In L.A., anyway, you couldn't not know that Stevie Nicks just released a record. But in the world of the Internet, I don't know what they know."

There's also the money issue. Told by her publicist that Lady Gaga this week released her new album on Amazon for 99 cents to great results, Nicks became flustered.

"Is that good? The whole record? For 99 cents? The $18 record?" she asked. "There was a time six years ago when on a Monday I got $3 million in publishing royalties and on a Wednesday I got $2 million more. Sometimes I get up in the morning thinking, 'I have made the best record I think I have ever made, but will anybody even ever hear it?' "

She shrugged off the concern momentarily, as a stage hand let her know that Stewart had arrived and it was time for rehearsal. She let down her long, wavy hair and walked over to a chair draped with a black fur coat, where a microphone was swathed in glittering scarves and ribbons.

"Oh, hey," she advised those about to watch the performance, "don't sit on the couches. They're dusty."

Maybe she just estimated wrong and it was a couple of years earlier after the Dixie Chicks did it. Still, $5 million in a week?

I seriously doubt she was ever pulling anything in like that per week. She probably just happened to receive 2 different royalty checks in one week which were likely for a year long period or something.

ugh the entire interview just left me with a bad taste in my mouth! stevie needs to get with the times already. first off the internet thing is so annoying. seriously she could be using the net to get more record sales by doing way more promotion on fb and twitter and things like that but she refuses to embrace it. secondly when has a cd cost $18.99 and thirdly is she just in it for the money? why does she care if gaga's cd sold for 99 cents on amazon for 1 day ya know? she needs to get it through her head that nobody is hardly making money on cd's these days and really as this age doesnt she have enough?!! iyd is excellent but she hasnt done much to promote it besides interviews and a few tv shows. she needs to go all out for this cd to be heard. i know alot of people who love stevie that are older and had no idea she had a new cd out. **** if it were me and i would pay for billboards and ads and anything i could to get the word out.
lol i saw a pic the other day of a subway car that had lady gaga's new cd cover on it. now that is fantastic marketing!!

I think it's pathetic that she laments that nobody is going to hear her new album when, in fact, she is the one to blame by not performing any new songs. It must be really difficult working with someone like her ashes brilliant but can also say some of the most inane, contradictory things!

I'm no apologist for Stevie, but I took the dust comment a bit favorably, like she didn't want anyone else to ruin their clothes by inadvertently sitting on dusty furniture. I didn't think of it as snobbish. I guess because there are so many places where I don't feel comfortable sitting. I'm not polite enough to warn other people though!

Agreed! I read through this article & it left a bad taste in my mouth too. Stevie comes across like a spoiled and pampered out of touch ancient rock star! Complaining about every little thing from dust to not getting 5 million dollar royalty checks in 1 week anymore, to not having her album/picture plastered on billboards on Sunset or Tower records anymore:rolleyes: I love Stevie to pieces, but seriously Stevie... GET A GRIP!
At this rate shes's on track by years end we'll hear her blaming everything from music piracy to her being down with pneumonia the 1st two weeks after her album was released for it not selling well. Stevie was well aware of the music industry realities when she went in to record IYD, and shrugged it off saying she did not care if it didn't sell. Well, she obviously cares...a lot!

Gaga and others (Fleet Foxes, Adele etc.) have done a brilliant thing by pricing their new releases accordingly to capitalize on units sold in the 1st few weeks of release in lieu of people hearing the music and thus hopefully creating demand & translating to buying concert tickets. WB stubbornly priced Stevie's IYD at a higher price than most of the other new releases. CD's do not cost $18- she's really out of touch - Oh, did I say that already!? And she needs to fire the greedy monster (WB) for not discounting IYD sooner. If they had priced IYD for 9.99 at online retailers like Itunes & Amazon before and after it's May 3rd release, IYD would have sold many more copies thus far, and MORE people would have heard it by now Stevie!! Also with a brand as tangible and identifiable as Stevie's - WB have also failed (once again) in getting her more media and internet exposure. Whoever is running her Twitter or Facebook accounts is doing a fantastically LOUSY job and are missing many opportunities - there are few updates considering she just released a new CD (HELLO), they could post new pictures every week, song teasers/videos etc. etc.!!! In just a few months Stevie has a built up over 355K fans to market to on FB alone up from @100K back in January. And, I know it's like beating a dead horse but the Nicksfix really should have been completely overhauled with this new release! Sorry, John Kinney, but you need to be fired too! As well as whoever is advising/managing Stevie these days - get rid of the old guard Stevie (the ones that advised you to tour with Rod Stewart) and start surrounding yourself with savvy younger advisers & managers. Because you're absolutely right, you may have just put out your best work ever, and it deserves to be heard!

I think Stevie is still stuck in her "superstar" mentality and ego at times, IE: Everything promo-wise is done for the artist (billboards, trade ads, etc).
She needs to #1: Get a computer. Get involved with her fans via the internet, that is the best way to get any message out to them.
#2: Get a reality check. Established artists have to WORK HARD to get their albums heard and sold these days, and yes, it does take gimmicks such as selling an album @ $.99 for a day. Reality check Stevie, it's not 1993 anymore :) Still love her tho!

Nah, she was more looking out for herself so the dust wouldn't cause an allergy flare up. I don't blame her, I just think the writer painted her in a less than flattering way, and maybe Stevie was just having a gripey kind of day....

Eh...she's had a tough month, in a way. She's cross and I forgiver her. One only has about a week to sell a record and she missed about 5 of those days being sick. She could have done 100 more interviews the week of the release and she wasn't able to--maybe that would have garnered 25K more copies in first week sales. The chance to sell a significant amount of copies of IYD is over, she knows it, and she's pissed.

Yes, Stevie's had a tough month. And it sucked that she got sick when her new record came out - we'll never really know how much that impacted her initial sales (promotion wise). But she needs to wise up about the music industries new realities. Stevie & WBR need to drop the price of her online CD to 7.99 - 8.99. I noticed on Amazon this week IYD is finally selling for 9.99 while Itunes has dropped it to 11.99 (where it should be 9.99 as well). But it's a little too late. WBR were greedy (as usual) - they gain the most $$ from the sales of her CD - and knew Stevie has a hardcore fan base that would buy IYD at a higher price even if it would exclude potential casual fans away. They should have priced IYD online at 9.99 (reg. version) & 11.99 (deluxe version) from the beginning. Hell, even The Cars get it, they have their new cd priced at 7.99 (Itunes) & 6.99 (Amazon). Fleet Foxes were selling for 8.99, & Seether's new record is 9.99 (reg) & 11.99 (deluxe) - and on and on, you get the picture.

The thing is, she could still sell more records by deep discounting IYD (to get the record heard by more than just her rabid fan base) and tour while actually singing new songs (not just 1) from the new album. If she goes back on the road again with Rod and sings just 1 or 2 new song from this record - IYD is done. In fact, while her bank account (along with her managers/lawyers) may have benefitted from the H&S tour. I think it was a huge miscalculation for prepping In Your Dreams. It cost her promoting IYD right out of the gate - rested, relaxed & optimistic, as well potentially costing her launching a solo IYD summer tour with her own special guest opener.;)
