View Full Version : Best production on IYD?

So which track do you think is the best produced on In Your Dreams?
My vote actually goes to Annabel Lee. The mystical little intro with the echoey pianos is just fantastic. I adore the sprinkling of strings in key places. Stevie's spacey sounding double harmonies are very Other Side Of The Mirror esque. I think the last 2 minutes of the song are especially cool. Where the various layers of the song are gradually stripped away, only leaving Stevie's voice at the end. The original demo of this song was pretty blah, but the finished product really sparkles.

OH, PLEASE...you should have your fingers rapped 100x's by a 300 lb nun with an 18" ruler for even mentioning TOSOTM in relation to IYD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about your opposite ends of the Stevie Nicks spectrum of album quality!!!!!!!!!!!! JEEEEEEEZUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think even ONE shower would make me feel clean enough right now....I need one of those nuclear plant scrub downs!!
It's analagous to a dog eating it's own ****! C'mon Louie, I don't need that sonic "visual" giving me the "yaks". I take enough Maalox as it is!!!
{heavy sigh}
The album is a production masterpiece from the opening notes of "Secret Love" to the final note of "Cheaper Than Free"...consistent throughout. One track isn't produced better than any other...that's the beauty of the album...that's what makes the album flow....that's what makes it a complete artistic piece as a whole. There's NOT the inconsistent production like on her previous albums...yes, and "that one" included.

 You're my favorite, Steve! :D The album is most certainly her most consistent effort in 2 decades. Easily up there with her very best. The neat little thing about the album is there are nods to almost all of her past albums in regards to style, production, and lyrics. For instance, the title track is so very Rumours. For What It's Worth is very Street Angel. There are lyric lines lifted from at least 4 of her past songs which I've counted. The album just seems very purposefully woven into a full circle.

Oh, definitely, I've heard quite a few "borrowed" lyrics throughout the album! (ok, so now that the "Ghosts Are Gone" can we QUIT "tracking them through the fog"???)
Yep, the SONGS kind of are reminiscent of earlier albums, but the PRODUCTION is NOW...THIS is the album I've been waiting for Stevie to make since the painful disappointment of Wild Heart...the inconsistent Rock A Little, the yak-inducing "that album" ("Rooms On Fire" being the exception)...she ALMOST got there with TISL...almost...I was giving that to be her "career masterpiece"...and then IYD comes along and blows 'em all out of the water!! Dave Stewart is a genius...too bad he spent all that time with that hack Annie Lennox when he could've been producing Stevie Nicks albums.
As I just posted in another thread...I think y'all are going to hate me just as much now that I've drank the "chiffon kool-aid" of IYD as you did when I was the grumpy ogre of Stevie-Land!  The ol' "be careful what you wish for" thing! ;)

I think the song I like the most is You May Be the One... bluesy, rocky... The only song I really dislike is New Orleans.

I'm loving this side of you! It's as if Stevie casted a spell on you, even though she's NOT a witch! ;)
For me, the best production is on Moonlight. The violins give me chills. That song is immersed in rich sound and I soak it up on every listen.

but the ending of Annabelle Lee is excrutiating to me. i skip it because i feel the "i lie down"s are tooooooooooooooo redundant. not a bad song though.

Aren't Mick Fleetwood's drums part of the production of Annabel Lee?If so not sure why they were not mentioned ..his best performance on one of her songs since Seven Wonders.

I love that part of "Annabel Lee". It's the wild abandoned singing section of the song, which is a Nicks stand-by. Like "Angel"'s "I still look up....I tried hard not to look up....that girl was me....yeahyeahyeah" or "Gold Dust Woman"'s "black widow" sequence at the end of that song. Or "Gypsy"'s continual "bright eyes" repeated stanzas at the end of that song. Actually to me the coda of "Annabel Lee" is what elevates the song to a classic status (along with the minuet section).

and i AGREE with you on EVERY song you quoted...but not one of them runs on for OVER a minute??? or do they??? i could be wrong but....??? just like...when people are saying how "live" she will rock it out ad-libbing... when has she done that since the "rock a little" tour???? like i said...i LOVE this song!! i DO... i just would almost rather the last "minute" was just instrumental ...ala...Gypsy...

I think you're right that these studio versions don't go as long. Well, Gold Dust Woman probably does, but it's also less repetitious. Live is a different story, and Nicks definitely vamps it up quite a bit at the end of many songs including Edge Of Seventeen and Sara.
I'm not trying to change your opinion about Annabel Lee, I'm just saying that I'm the opposite. The coda is what makes the song for me, not what breaks it.

 i getcha tabruns... btw... i SO agree with you on the "last album" thread.. where Stevie said a few times how..if Christine recorded with them and had a hit single...and she's not there on tour.... SO WHAT??? it would sell more albums... and more people would show up to see them (even without Christine)... someone needs to tell them this!!

I know. It sounds like a vocal exercise that you give to your singing students to repeat over and over again.

This thread has really woken me up with a laugh this morning! Can't think of best production yet, although Annabel Lee jumps out at me - those drums are fantastic. I'll have another inevitable listen this evening!

Yes! Yes! Yes!!! You've turned me into Molly Bloom. I'm glad SOMEBODY said it.
Dave's "genius" reveals itself on IYD as the ability to allow the artist's sound to match their soul. THIS album, THIS sound is (finally) Stevie. And that makes it her masterpiece.
No one song can be chosen (each has touches that are lovely and surprising) because Dave's/Glen's greatest achievement is the de-goating of Stevie throughout.
However, the most recent production flourish that's charmed me is the delicate layers of sound on "New Orleans"... such as the atmospheric, Kate Bush-esque chirps of a bird.
