I'm so excited by this. I've been watching this season because I'm from the Pittsburgh area and I wanted to see Heinz Ward. Now Stevie will be on singing!!! I wonder what she will sing? I don't want to hear "Secret Love" We need something new. Maybe "You may be the one'?

Italian Summer is perfect for Dancing for the Stars. I really don't understand this stuff with Secret Love. It's like beating a dead horse. All I can think is Italian Summer is not easy to sing and Secret Love is.

Why is anyone surprised that she's performing "Secret Love" and "Landslide"? Stevie isn't trying to sell us, her "hardcore" and devoted fanbase her album, she's selling to the casual fan and/or new fan.

The reason why she performs the same songs over again is because that is what the public wants. I can guarantee the public-at-large did not think "Landslide" on Oprah was "boring".

Landslide is a classic. Secret Love, in my opinion, will not get people to buy the album. Italian Summer would of been perfect for this. Infact, they could of done a dance to this song. I'm just thinking that Secret Love was chosen as the first single because it is the easiest song for Stevie to sing off that album. I really think that is what this is about.

Well that is one of the reasons why certain songs are chosen as singles. I'm sure she could perform "Italian Summer" but it would be very stripped down and not as grandiose as the studio version.

Pretty much she will be riding out "Secret Love" until Reprise decides to release a new single. And the song is STILL climbing at AC radio, so they are just riding the wave right now.

I don't have a problem with hearing either... Everyone young and old will know and enjoy Landslide... Secret Love hasn't been played on primetime tv yet... It's really it's first LARGE audience.. we're talking massive.. so it's all good. More people will hear this song watching this one show then if she toured for months and months.

yeah, this isn't glee or american idol. She may get some sales from this, but not much, especially promoting the wrong material.

Secret Love is not going to get anyone to buy the album if she sings it the way she has been singing it recently. Maybe it is just me, but I don't think SL sounds good live. Maybe when you are there in the audience, but on youtube and on Ellen, it sounds bleh. It would sound a lot better if Stevie didn't feel the need to yell the whole damn song. You May Be The One would probably be the easiest one to sing live. For What It's Worth would be pretty easy too, but when she gets on stage she goes into yell mode, so instead of singing it softly and turning up the mic, she'd go belt it out at the top of her voice. Oh Stevie...

ITS HER NEW SINGLE!

Did you follow her when TISL came out? She played her singles to death on every public appearance in 2001. Its the same deal. Its NOT because its easiest to sing, its NOT because shes afraid to try new songs, its NOT because she was sick and hasn't rehearsed. SECRET LOVE IS HER NEW SINGLE, THAT IS WHY SHE IS PLAYING IT.

APerfectLie
05-14-2011, 01:46 AM
I understand why she is doing Landslide. It is a classic, it sounds good when she sings it, and everybody loves it. However, it is a Fleetwood Mac song. A Fleetwood Mac song she has beat to death! Why not do Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You? It'd be just as good without the overkill factor.

Exactly! She has promoted Landslide to DEATH!!!!!!! A few weeks ago on twitter people were commenting that if they heard that song again, they were going to throw up. She needs to promote herself. Leather and Lace is a single that she get to gold status. Has Anyone Ever Written is great and would help her sell her solo career. She is in solo career mode. Quit selling Fleetwood Mac. She's becoming a one trick pony. The sad thing is she has good material off this album that some people will never know is even on the album.

I think her problem is confidence. Stevie is a comfort person. Landslide for her, is like curling up w/ a good book and a cup of chai ;) ! She knows the song inside and out and prob. wouldn't screw it up on live t.v. I think to her, it's the most sensible thing to do. For us, it's getting boring. I love the song, don't get me wrong. However, this horse has been beat to a pulp. I really think she's afraid to do anything different. Your average fan or listener, expects to hear Landslide. Why not throw them for a loop, and sing something beautiful like HAYWAFY ? That's my answer. You would think after all these years of success and performing and all the people that just adore her, she would have all the confidence in the world in her self but i don't think she does ! It's kind of sad because artistry is all about taking chances but to her it's almost like jumping off a cliff !

She's done Secret Love on Oprah, Ellen and across the US with Rod Stewart. The song was released back in March (?) or even sooner. I don't recall. My point is we've all heard it and love it but it's reached it's peak. It's been on the charts for a while now. It's done. It's a wonderful song but it's time for a SECOND single to gain some exposure. That's how you sell records in this day and age, if you're lucky. Gone are the days of waiting months to release a new single. That's why artists now release singles in rapid fire or even simulatenously to keep people's interest. Radio isn't exactly playing Stevie's new stuff on a regular basis so she needs to look for other avenues for promotion.IYD is an exceptional album. There are many wonderful songs on it that need to be heart by people who have not bought the album yet. Being that it just dropped last week, DWTS is a prime opportunity to play a new song and keep the interest and the momentum going. Playing Secret Love and Landslide (ugh) will do nothing to promote this record or Stevie's career.

I totally agree your comments regarding a new single. Yes she needs to move on and release and promote the next single. SL has fallen off the AA chart and is dying on the AC chart.

However, regarding Landslide, she needs to perform the one song that has the greatest audience recongnition for all generations, which is Landslide. After they hear Landslide, she will perform SL. That makes for good marketing sense.

Trust me, I'm so tired of seeing her perform Landslide, but then again, I would not consider myself a casual fan. I like so many other hardcore Stevie fans seek her performances out. Most people don't.

Regarding the over-exposed song Landslide: the problem is that Stevie has never written another song in that vein that has acheived universal accessiblity and acceptance.

You would hope that in the 37 years since she wrote that song, that she would have written another song like Landslide: one that would have the same qualities and appeal. But sadly, that song was a fluke of sorts.

The only song I hear that has some of those qualities is "For What It's Worth." My only irk with that song title is there is another well-established song with that same title: Buffalo Springfield's hit song written and sung by Steven Stills. Given that Stevie is familiar with late 1960's music, I wonder if it ever crossed her mind.

doing Secret Love on Oprah and on Rod's tour didn't really seem to help

Technically she did not do Secret Love on Oprah. It was not broadcast on the show, but put on the Oprah site later. I bet only a fraction of the TV viewers logged on to watch the Secret Love performance in the internet. So really the only nationally broadcast of Stevie performing the song was on Ellen.

Dancing was the number one rated program last week. That audience will give her and the song much, much greater exposure than the Ellen show performance for sure.

"When it comes to music the Dancing With The Stars results show has two very different acts lined up. Rock & Roll icon Stevie Nicks stops by to sing her legendary song “Landslide.” She will also be singing her new single “Secret Love” from her new album In Your Dreams. Stevie Nicks’ performance will be accompanied by DWTS pros Dmitry Chaplin and Anna Trebunskaya. "

Dancing With The Stars 2011: Stevie Nicks Performs Live (May 17, 2011)Posted by Jeff Kane on May 16, 2011 at 7:21 PM EST

It will be a long night of music and dancing on a 2-hour long Dancing with the Stars results show this week.

When it comes to music the Dancing With The Stars results show has two very different acts lined up. The other musical act will be rapper Pitbull who will be joined by singer NeYo and Nayer to perform his single “Give Me Everything.”

When it comes to dancing we will see the return of several past contestants as Apolo Anton Ohno, Donnie Osmond and Warren Sapp return to provide some color commentary. DWTS Season 2 winner Drew Lachey returns and teams with former partner Cheryl Burke to recreate their fan favorite freestyle dance.

In what will likely be a very emotional moment 13-year-old Tayla Kelly will perform with Dancing With The Stars pros Lacey Schwimmer and Chelsie Hightower to the song “Bulletproof.” Tayla was born with Primary Immune Deficiency Disease which has led to her having multiple surgeries, organ failure and a short life expectancy. She has found solace from this pain in dance and was recently recruited by the Rochester city Ballet to study dance at the Timothy M. Draper School. She gets to live a dream tomorrow night and take the floor with two pros. I doubt there will be dry eye in the house.

While Two hours is way too long for any Dancing with the Stars results show, at least they have a lot of stuff planned for the show and should keep things moving.

DVR set and ready to go. I am a bit nervous for Stevie. I looked up the ratings and roughly 20 million people have been watching DWTS lately. I wish Stevie could have been on Idol too. Why was her Idol appearance canceled? To have Stevie doing both shows then one of them being canceled has got me down.

You're funny. I have been a fan of Pitbull for a decade. I even worked for him one night and had a nice conversation with his 'proud of his son' father. And he's sexy as fukc.

Hey, it's 'The Queen of Rock Roll' in front of maybe 20 million viewers on national TV. What could be better than that? I bet many of her peers her age would give an organ or two for that chance.

What Could Be Better????? Maybe utlilizing that rare oppurtunity to have an audience to play a song that will make as many of that 20 million to buy her new album.

BUT I Will say AT LEAST she is playing ONE of her two songs from the new album. Technically thats most important. The album will be mentioned in front of 20 million people. And the song is decent enough. My only complaint is there is so much more attention grabbing material from IYD.

As if no one has ever heard the song Landslide??? Perhaps all of Stevie's marketing efforts -before and after- should include Landslide! Brilliant idea! The big mistep in her new album is that she didn't include a new "Dave Stewart mix" of Landslide. In fact they should should have titled the album "In Your Dream Landslide!" or "The Landslide in Your Dreams." Yeah!

Even Paul McCartney has to play an "oldie" when he makes an appearance. Whether die-hards like it or not, casual listeners like to hear something familiar. Stevie's doing a new song (one, it should be noted, that has only been performed on television once) and she's doing a classic. That's a fair trade-off.

Johnny Stew is right, only one new song (Secret Love) has been on TV, so far. Oprah does not count, as it never aired. DWTS has not happened, yet. So yeah, only one new song has been broadcast from IYD.

Dancing with the stars has yet to air = 0
Plus ELLEN = 1. SO As usual j.stew is right
her single has only been performed once on national television
I do not think that singing landslide is necessary at all. I think she could do 2 new songs from the new album

Yes, this is a BIG deal.

What a lot of people who aren't in media do not understand is, Stevie has to perform a hit song along with a new song because of the audience that she's reaching and the fact that her management and the showrunners know that 15 million people are NOT her core/diehard fan base. "Secret Love" is a given as it is the single (and STILL climbing in radio, I might add), and "Landslide" is a good choice because she may not want to bother with "Stand Back" and perhaps other arrangements were made as far as the show's theme and production order as to supplement Stevie singing "Landslide"...it could possibly segway into the next dance, and on shows like this, the producers can make the call and require that Stevie sings a particular song, or as Ellen did, just ask really nicely ;)

I totally understand why it's necessary for her to sing an old song... it seems pretty obvious. You give the audience/viewers something they are familiar with so that they recognize you and are comfortable (everyone likes a song they can sing along too), and then you give them something new to promote and get new ears hearing it...

They do this with all of the artists pretty much. Hanson was on the other week and they did MMMBop despite the fact that they wrote it when they were 10 and it's been performed 108198 times, and then they played new stuff afterwards.

She could do something like Stand Back but keep in mind that Landslide was just on Glee, so all of the people who heard it there will now see Stevie singing it and go 'ohhhh', etc. I know we're sick of Landslide but I understand.. also, as others have mentioned, it's quite possible that the producers have a say in what gets sung.

Absolutely, that part is more a musical dead end than a mini-bridge. Painful.

Stevie's gestures weren't as annoying as in the other performances. And I thought her last note sounded pretty good. But overall the stage is just too big for this song.
I think WSS could have been a great choice - would have suited her currently ragged voice much better. SL is a pretty song & needs a light vocal.

I think she looked great, and did a great job considering her health issues. She was a little hoarse in places, but it was still a clean, decent performance.

I just wish people would be more realistic regarding this song. It's not going to make or break the album. She has her established fan base. Who would that potential new demographic consist of? Pre-teens who weren't alive during her heyday? She's well-known. Most people have long-ago made up their minds about her. Stop trying to think she can be what she was 30 something years ago. She has changed. The world and music industry has changed. I have changed, but the panic /concerns remain ageless!

At least DWTS is consistent. They made both Stevie Nicks and Pitbull sound equally crappy. Good job!

I thought Landslide was a beautiful performance tonight. I feel bad for her having gotten the flu at such a bad time, with the new album out and promotion a must do. But she came on and pushed through. She looked great and I thought she did a wonderful job.

She shouldn't have pushed herself to do this if she wasn't ready. It sounds like her voice wasn't nearly up to it's usual par and viewers are noticing...

I just don't think "Secret Love" translates that well to a live performance, especially with her illness.

Well whatever, the fact is that it's still moving up. I just don't see WB releasing a new single while "Secret Love" is gaining some traction, regardless of what those of us on The Ledge might think. They're not going to undercut a single when it's moving upward.

We'd all hate to see this album fade because it's just too good to deserve that fate. I wonder though if we're also being impatient. We want a big splash, we want the album to go Gold yesterday, we want a top 10 single now. What if WB and/or Nicks know full well that the best success for a classic artist are continual slow steady sales of the album? Albums do sometimes start moving back up the charts too. We sometimes forget that.

I agree that her voice was not back to normal and Secret Love struggled. I think it is a hard song to pull off on stage. I agree she should release a new single.

As for Landslide, I thought that was not her best performance of Landslide. She was trying to do new stuff with that song in certain parts and it did not work. However, the audience loved it and gave her a standing ovation.

Not sure it will help with sales. She needs to some tv time where they play the studio versions too so people can hear how AMAZING her new CD is.

Most of us know that pneumonia isn't something to screw around with, and I think that everyone who understands that would've supported her if she missed any of these opportunities. Think about the Ledge's reaction when she canceled Webster Hall AND the Today Show. We were all extremely bummed about it, but we understood that her health was more important.

Stevie is not some young teeny bopper pop star that can release their singles every few months she already should've moved way on from this single. Being on Dancing With the Stars is huge exposure but like I said performing this song and old hits really won't help boost album sales.

True, but I also saw several people lamenting about the lost promotion opportunities. I'm not suggesting that anyone here thinks Nicks should risk her health because I don't think anyone thinks that, but I do think she sometimes gets blasted for not doing "enough" to promote the album (to be fair, that criticism gets leveled at WB way more often than at Nicks).

Being on Dancing With the Stars is huge exposure but like I said performing this song and old hits really won't help boost album sales.

But apparently it is, since the album has moved up 12 spots or so on iTunes. I understand the point of view that "Secret Love" isn't a 'grab your attention and make you buy my album' single in some people's eyes so they're frustrated that it's being performed but at least Nicks is actually performing a song from In Your Dreams. If she had only performed "Landslide" I still think it would have been good exposure but it's definitely much better to actually perform a new song.

i love this post:

MOONLIGHT is the popular hit off this record - i know because i play it constantly and even sing it to people in the bars of Silverlake - it's a very peculiar and hard to categorize song - just as Stevie's first hits were - as is Italian Summer, which i just played for a friend whom i pulled into the car and played LOUD off my new IYD cd....expose this record to people and it will take off...Christ! must we remind people that FLEETWOOD MAC took exactly ONE YEAR to reach #1!!!!!!! No one remebers that Warm Ways was actually the 1st single off FM and it flopped.....IYD is a great record - that's the important thing...

I thought she seemed a little nervous too.

It reminded me of something she said before performing several years back -
I think it might have been before doing Rhiannon at the piano for
VH-1 but "don't quote me on that."
Anyway, she said, "And if you don't think I'm just - - SHAKING at the knees???
You're WRONG!"

(Or something very close to that.)

I bet it was a combination of her knowing that she's not quite up-to-par yet,
and it being live. (Considering how many millions of people were watching.)

Come to think of it - - Has Stevie ever "gone solo" on live tv with millions of people watching, before this?

I was finally able to see the videos on YouTube. Not the disasater I was expecting. She didn't sound great on Secret Love, but she definitely got better as it went, and it didn't seem to languish as much as some of the other live versions they've done. I actually mostly enjoyed it. With Stevie in full voice, it would have been excellent.

And Landslide was pretty close to awesome, notwithstanding that she still sounds a bit congested. I don't think there's any question as to why it's her go-to TV performance song - it's memorable, always goosebump-worthy, and something she still sounds great on after all these years.

Did anyone else notice how she started earlier on Secret Love then usual?

She started did start early, but maybe that was a show request to save time?

I was expecting to be horrified. Aside from some shaky vocals, I thought it was a good performance. She did less miming, and that is a good thing. Way to pimp yourself out, Mama. Sell that record!!

Yeah, I thought Secret Love sounded rough :sorry:, but she sounded good on Landslide. She still sounds like she's still not fully recovered from her sickness, but she did look really happy, probably because she knows how popular DWTS is & how many people will be watching. It's good PR for her. I hope the rumors about her being on AI are true. Then I'll catch her on that, too.

I have a picture set as a background on my work computer of Stevie last night on DWTS doing her hand wave. If you google Stevie Nicks on DWTS, you'll see alot of pics from the show of her last night.

I liked seeing those goofy judges dancing around on "Secret Love". I'm sure they do that with all the guests, but it sure seemed liked they loved Stevie!

No one in TV land cares how pretty Stevie looks on TV--she is ill, her voice is off and she should not be performing until she is well.

Stevie looked amazing last night and I loved everything about her performance. The judges loved her too. I hope this will boost the album sales. She is fabulous! In my eyes she can do no wrong. Her words inspire and heal me.

Stevie's performances were fine, but now I know why I have never seen DWTS. God, how cheesy was that to have dancers (guys with their shirts open too ) dancing around on stage while she was singing. Anyone remember Solid Gold from the 80's? The Solid Gold dancers? This it the 10's version of that. Yuck!

I agree about the dancers....just terrible. It really detracted from Stevie.

It's called DANCING with the stars, hence the dancing :) (as cheesy as it was).

Yeah, in which case, I hope she DOES Landslide or something older that she can handle. Can't imagine being on AI and doing a rough and shaky version of a new song. I'm sorry, just the past few performances on TV of SL haven't sounded good to me. They've sounded ok in concert though. I realize she's sick but then how come she can belt out Landslide with no problem? SL isn't exactly a difficult song to sing.
