I'd like to see what other people's thoughts are in regards to what should be the single releases off of In Your Dreams. I'm having a difficult time figuring this out myself just because there are so many great songs on this album.

So if you were Stevie's record company exec, and you could keep releasing singles, what songs would you release and in what order?

I would go with Moonlight first. The twihards need a fix while waiting for the next movie  and it is a great song.
Then I would release the title track IYD probably the most catchy radio friendly song on the album.
Then I would go with You May Be The One . I think a lot of people can relate to this song.
Then Italian Summer because it is so romantic, so soulful.

I would go with Wide Sargasso Sea. I'm 42 and the friends my age loved it on first listen....my nieces friends in their early 20s loved it on first listen.... teenagers i work with loved it on first listen... my sister in her late 50s loved it on first listen... it's the only one that over 20 people i've played the album for ALL LOVED right off the bat!!

Strangely I have had a similar experience when I've played selections of songs for people. Yet, it's one of my least favorite tracks on the album (which means I love it, but prefer others).

it's actually the first song i kept repeating when we had the stream on Rolling Stone. it's probably my favorite..and i was STUNNED that all the people i played it for loved it the most too... especially the teenagers...i figured they'd go for Moonlight...but no it was Wide Sargasso Sea??!! i think it's the music...and the fact that it's a full Story...not made up of bits and pieces of poems...so you can actually follow it!! so since it's been so popular with all the people i know...i'd do this as a single... with a killer video of course.. and the little snippet on the sizzle reel looks promising!! but you know it being a single wont happen! so sad...

i know what you mean i kept playing WSS over and over when listening to the stream as well. it instantly jumped out at me and its just so damm good. stevie is so fierce in this song and i would die to see this released on the radio with a kick ass video. i can already picture her doing this in concert with screens of fire and smoke behind her and her just totally getting into it. love it!!

If I were working for Warners and had my druthers, I would have done this...

"In Your Dreams" released in late March
"Moonlight" released in May
"Italian Summer" released in July
"Everybody Loves You" released in September

and If I were given the go ahead for a fifth single, I'd put "Wide Sargasso Sea" out in the fall! :)

Wow these are some really cool replies. I hope we see some more! :)

I just wondered about this because as I was listening to the album last night and wondering what the second single would be, I kept thinking "oh this could be a hit"...."but then this one sounds like a single already"....."but then THIS one seems so radio-friendly".....

I'm looking forward to seeing what other folks think.

I would have released

Moonlight
Ghosts Are Gone
New Orleans
Secret Love
Annabel Lee

In Your Dreams only if it was remixed. It is too repetitive and bland-ish (but still awesome)

My choice for singles:

1-In Your Dreams (should've been released over SL imo)
2-You Could Be The One (release this one immediately!!!)
3-Moonlight
4-Italian Summer or Everybody Loves You

I could see "Secret Love" being, say, the third or fourth single if In Your Dreams had warranted that many single releases. However, it might not even be my fifth choice for a single.

My choices for singles are, in order:

1. "In Your Dreams"
The title track is fast-paced optimism and is catchy as HELL. It also showcases some of Nicks's best lyrics in many, many years. It would have been THE perfect way of announcing to the world that Nicks is making some of the best music in her career in her 60s.

2. "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)"
The tie-in with the Twilight series would have been a natural choice to lure in people who could potentially be fans. The chorus is almost terminally catchy.

3. "Wide Sargasso Sea"
A bit long for a single, but Nicks's singing has SO MUCH passion in it and conjures up so many classic Nicks themes that it would definitely tell the world that it's a Stevie Nicks song.

4. "Italian Summer"
Seriously going against type for me to pick a ballad, but it's so lush, so romantic, and had so much buzz prior to IYD's release that would have been almost foolish for it to not at least try to maintain the attention the song was getting from press prior to the sizzle video being put up.

5. "Secret Love"
The whole Rumours tie in thing, plus the fact that it is catchy and it's short enough to be a radio single. However, "New Orleans" and "Soldier's Angel" are stronger songs.

The song I'm leaving out because I think it's way too long to be a viable single, even though it's the second best song on this record is "Ghosts Are Gone." Structurally, it has some similarities to "Fall From Grace" in the sense that there's no real chorus, but because "Fall From Grace" is a relatively short 4:31, it might have worked as a single. At least my then-roommate thought so, and he was definitely NOT a chiffonhead.

Okay, I took your suggestions and did the following:

I created a grid of 6 releases (if you suggested less than 6, I just left the latter ones blank). I then added points per position (so a song suggested for first release got 6 points, for 2nd release got 5 points, etc.). Here's the result so far:

"Moonlight" (total points 42) and "In Your Dreams" (total points 38) are the absolute top choices. People just seem to vary mainly in which should be first, which second.

"Italian Summer" is in third place with a total of 12 points and is also most often listed by people as the third or fourth potential single.

"You May Be The One" comes in at fourth with 13 total points. When it gets mentioned it gets mentioned higher than "Italian Summer", as being the 2nd or 3rd single, but fewer people choose it than choose "Italian Summer".

"Annabel Lee" comes in fifth with 12 total points. The people that choose it pick it as a top release (such as second single) but again fewer people in total have selected it.

"Wide Sargasso Sea" places sixth with 10 total points, the bulk of them coming from 1 person who selected it as the "shoulda been" single.

"New Orleans"/"Secret Love" tie with 7 points each and usually place later in the release order. The people who chose "Secret Love" were citing it as a single but a "should have been released later" single.

"Everybody Loves You" places a surprising (to me) 9th place with a total of 6 points. The highest it places with someone is as the 4th single, and others pegged it as the fifth or sixth single.

StandBackStevie: for consistency I just used your pop song release list.

I really think that For What It's Worth would be a great single. I was randomly singing a line as I walked into math class the other day and I had someone ask me what song it was because they liked it.

There's really nothing about the song that I could see deterring people, it's just simple and pretty and sweet. Her vocals are amazing on the track and this kind of stuff does get played on the radio. Plus it's very catchy - hence why I was singing it on the way to math lol.

Im the millionth person to say this but the blatantly obvious choice is the title track. It's so danmed catchy but is still rocking and its catchiness doesn't seem contrived like in Everyday and Say You Will. Stevie wasn't praying to the commercial gods on In Your Dreams, it just happened.

Stevie likes to refer to herself as some hardcore rocker, even tho for the most part she isn't, its what she sees herself as. So why the hell not just release Ghosts are Gone and live up to what you say you are. No, instead Classic Rock stations are playing Secret Love.

I really think Secret Love was an excellent choice for the first single. It's really a great pop song and sounds damn good on the radio.

I think in order for tracks like Moonlight, Wide Sargossa Sea, Annabel Lee or YMBTO to be single material (or rather, radio ready) they will need to be remixed and truncated.

In my opinion, Annabel Lee is a fantastic album track, but a poor choice for a single.

Also, it seems like it would make the most sense to wait to release Moonlight (or a new single remix) when the film hits theaters later this year...

That said...

My choices at the moment:

For What Its Worth
In Your Dreams (maybe a punchier, remixed version as was suggested earlier in the thread)
Moonlight

I'm sorry but I think In Your Dreams would be a bad choice for a single. Although it's catchy to some degree, it's the least atmospheric and/or generic. Ghosts Are Gone even without a real chorus is a lot more stand up and take notice. In Your Dreams would be interesting to people for about 5 seconds because it's new. Not that it means a whole lot but used to be a dj and many current dj friends of mine both chiffon heads and not also see it this way. The most musically interesting one is New Orleans actually but Ghosts Are Gone should be single to get buy-in from the masses then hit them with New Orleans, Moonlight (the timing would be perfectly suited at this point) and finally Annabel Lee. I personally love You May Be The One and Everybody Loves You but not strong enough at this point to be marketed to masses as single representations for the disc. If In Your Dreams got a make-over, perhaps but as it stands now, I totally disagree with people who say it's the obvious choice. It's the obvious choice to have her otherwise musically interesting album be dismissed. Of course all imho but I'm passionate about this topic above most because at this point, the success of the album will depend on the single choices and marketing surrounding it and a tour if it happens. The album is done, the reviews are all great so it's about singles and video promotion and then do a tour and plenty of public appearances.

P.S. I think Secret Love was the perfect choice for first single - only thing missing was the video right away (it was a mistake to not release it immediately) and a club remix. This has to happen with all singles in order for her music to get exposed to as many markets as possible. Please be smart, Stevie (and record company) - I don't want this album to fade and it's at the most critical point in it's circle of fate right now.

I would probably release "Annabel Lee" as a single because almost every kid in highschool, and certainly almost everyone in college had to read the poem at some point in his/her life-- and even if one didn't read that poem, one probably read something by that writer growing up. There's been enough movies over the years to make his name well recognized. A number of his homes are actually museums in the USA--in Richmond, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore (grave site) that I have personally been to over the years. I'd take advantage of his name, put out a shirt and other memoribilia to let people know about the song, as well. I see a lot of potential "buzz" to be created with this song if Warner Brothers would "seize the day," and go for it.

Not so much funny, as it is more telling. Secret Love is a good song, and makes for a great album track. But upon hearing the whole album, I feel certain that SL should not have been picked as the 1st single. It only finds Stevie in predictable territory - stuck in the mid-tempo funk she veers towards in most of her singles. However something like "In Your Dreams" is more representative of the overall sound of the rest of the album. It breaks out of her mid-tempo rut, it's catchy as hell and it recalls tinges of "I Don't Wanna Know" mashed up with something fun and flirtatious as "Enchanted" meets Tom Petty. IYD would have leaped off of Triple A radio and possibly AC as well, and has the tenacity needed to draw in new or casual listeners.

"You Should Be The One" also has that ability. It's Stevie & the girls finest vocal on the record imo & showcases what a classic brilliant singer & songwriter she is. She needs to present this side of her to mainstream audiences. There is nothing flaky or iffy about this track. It is solid in its perfection from beginning to end and a potential show stopper classic.

I would pick as the best bet next singles:

Ghosts Are Gone: You can really rock out to it and it grabs your attention instantly. It could do well on all formats; dance, pop, rock, country-rock. The stations might even actually get behind it and a killer diller video would help so would a dance remix. I do love other songs on IYD more- Moonlight- sigh !! being one but GAG might catch on. It also might increase concert draws after all Stevie is the Rock and Roll Queen babies !!. My guilty pleasure with this one is the fading lyrics on silvery and golden rainbows..only Stevie can do that and she does so with no apologies... she and we all know it's the rally cry for Chiffon Heads.

Wide Sargasso Sea: Burn baby burn. In the beginning she was indeed pure but by the end of this smoker, we are all on fire. WOW. The title intrigues and the song grabs your attention with the story especially. It has the potential on all formats too except country. Love it when she screams near the end "For a while they were so in love". Same as GAG - video and remix too.

There are alot of GREAT songs on IYD especially for AA radio but the 2 above have to most potential for crossover to multi formats.

Personally, Stevie is back for me (although she really never goes away :) with a stunning album. It will be my summer album for sure ! It was worth the 10 year wait.

Actually, I think this is Stevie's most rockin' album since RAL. And besides I think Stevie's always been on the lighter side of rock with sprinkles of country thrown in here and there throughout her whole solo career.

Or her Fleetwood Mac career:shrug:Dreams ,Landslide.Sara,Silver Springs.Storms..all light rock some with what could be described as countryish touches .In fact one critic back in 1979 described "Angel" as "a risky flirtation with hard rock"so she was not really percieved as a rocker even then ..save of course for the live Rhiannon.

It's hard because the songs I like best wouldn't make the best commercial, mass appeal singles.

I like You May Be The One and Italian Summer best. I think Italian Summer could have been a single 50+ years ago. Not so much today. It just makes me think of Doris Day making the bed in The Man Who Knew Too Much, que sera sera. It thrills me, but I don't see it on Billboard, not even on the AC charts.

For a contemporary hit, I think FWIW is most marketable actually and then Moonlight, especially if the general public can somehow relate it to the Twilight movie craz.

Having read the other suggestions and listened to the album multiple more times, here's my take on the single releases:

1. Secret Love
2. In Your Dreams
3. Moonlight
4. Italian Summer
5. Everybody Loves You

The five songs I listed as singles all share in common a "radio ready" sound: Secret Love is concise, well written pop song and already a top 20 AC hit. In Your Dreams is the most immediately catchy song on the album and one of the top choices for a single by most of the people in this thread. Moonlight is widely cited as arguably the best song on the album, and with the Twilight tie-in, as well as being the other song most cited by people here as a "should be" single, makes it my third choice. Italian Summer and Everybody Loves You are both catchy, radio-friendly songs that make perfect follow-up singles to the mighty first three.

For What It's Worth, New Orleans and Annabel Lee all have great potential and in some ways they're actually classic tracks already without even the need of being singles. Of the three, New Orleans is probably the most likely to be a single, possibly replacing either Italian Summer or Everybody Loves You. For What It's Worth and Annabel Lee are heading towards the same status that Gold Dust Woman and Crystal have.....hugely popular classic songs that remain album tracks.

Wide Sargasso Sea is a wild card. It's structure makes me lean against thinking of it as a single, but it is notably a song that gets attention from both Nicks fans and others.

Soldier's Angel, Ghosts Are Gone and You May Be The One are all excellent songs. They're so good in fact that IMO people tend to mistake their quality with being something with single potential (perhaps not Soldier's Angel, but the latter two for sure). I don't think any of these songs would make good singles though. I'm not denying the quality of these songs in any way, but their sounds are all a little too esoteric for a wide-appeal single.

Cheaper Than Free is an atmosphere song that one either gets or doesn't. Could it be a single? I don't think so, precisely because of the "either/or" reaction that it's gotten.

For What It's Worth

This song is one of the best she's written in years. I put it right up there with Dreams and Landslide for songwriting.

New Orleans

Another great songwriting effort. One of a handful of songs on the album that elevates it to near-Bella Donna status.

In Your Dreams

Feels like something from Full Moon Fever. Great summer radio song.

Annabel Lee

Feels like a cross between Gypsy and Angel. Classic Fleetwood Mac sound

Everybody Loves You

Great pop song.

I wish I could say "WSS" or "GAG" but all of my non-Stevie friends whom I've forced this album on like those two the least; I can't blame them given some of the cringe-worthy lyrics. Quite a shame since they're the only 2 real rockers... :o

I keep listening to this album (and her other ones) repeatedly. I was on a long road trip, so perfect opportunity. :)

These songs sound the most like radio singles: Secret Love, In Your Dreams, Moonlight, Italian Summer, and Everybody Loves You.

But, *these* songs are significantly amazing songs: Annabel Lee, For What It's Worth, and New Orleans. There's a 'gravitas' or something to those three songs, so even while they don't immediately sound like a radio-ready single, their sheer quality would probably make them great singles.

I still believe Wide Sargasso Sea is a wild card....could make a good single if people "get it".

BTW: "Secret Love" has a second life of some kind. It starts really growing on you again, I'm not sure how.

I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday and as I was browsing the books I heard "For What's It Worth" coming from the music section = of course, I headed right over and just listened... it sounded so good coming from the loud speakers in the middle of the store.. it was only the song, as something else played after it.. For What Its Worth would sound really nice on the Loft or coffeehouse xm stations...
