A bad habit I probably need to break. I joined when I was 16, and there's no way I would have thought this board would still be around, or I'd still be here. I'm definitely a few years past my prime.

I kind of remember why I stopped coming around... last night I spent two hours going through threads. Bye-bye social life, hello Ledge.
Guess I really wanted to see what others had to say about IYD. And have a chance to voice my thoughts on the f-ery that IS the new version of My Heart.
So everyone's all right? Any recent trolls? Diss never came back around?

dissention was on LiveJournal on & off after he left here; I stopped using LJ a year or so ago - I think the last time he posted there was in 2009, or maybe even last year. He claims that he forgot his password to his Ledge account and that's why he doesn't come here anymore, but I think that's BS. He got into a serious relationship, iirc. I remember him bitching about his bf wanting to get married, but I dunno if that ever happened. Basically, I think he just got a life.

I'd be more curious why a thread I created last night titled MIA in an effort to find out what happened to a Ledgie that has been here for over a decade has suddenly disappeared. The first response was that he was banned. I signed off shortly afterwards and now the thread is gone. Is there an unwritten rule I have broken? I had no idea this person had been banned. Is asking about someone who has been a fixture here on The Ledge verboten when they have become banned? I wanted to send the person a PM asking about an FM statistic, as I often would, and found they are no longer on the Member List.
A PM would have been nice.
Laterz friend. Sorry to see you go. [end]
I have been here since 2004 and was recently remarking that it is hard to believe all this time has passed.

If you find old posts of his, it still shows him as an addicted ledgie as opposed to a moderator (which happens when someone first gets bant) or just registered, which is what bant people have by their name.

A couple of folks are out on temporary disciplinary leave which removes them from the member list, while others may have disappeared from the member list because they haven't logged in in so long that their account has been automatically deactivated. Some past members also come to us and ask that their screennames be removed since they're done with their Ledge tenure, and won't be back. There are a variety of reasons why some folks no longer show up on the member list.

Sorry I was unclear. Members may be removed from the public member list, but they're still on our administrator/control panel member list. :) Screennames automatically disappear from the public member list when a user is suspended or banned. Other people have various reasons why they don't want their screennames to show up anymore once they leave the Ledge: they don't want to be found by perspective employers, spouses, etc.

I've always wondered how she's doing. I'm glad to see that someone has talked to her in the last couple of years, at least. She sent me a message on MySpace about 3 or 4 years ago (I don't even have a MySpace account anymore), and that was the last I heard from her.

My join date is 2004, but I am sure I have been w/ The Ledge since 2001. I had an account under silentgarbo, but it was a huge mess to re-activate it, so I just started the GS! user name. As GS! I've lost my password atleast 4 times but have managed to keep this name going for 6+ years. Does that qualify me??? I need to find the huge Ledgie gathering pic from the SN 4 night stint in Vegas. Lots and lots of good peeps (old-timeys) there.

I have my name sticker in my Stevie shrine. We closed that place and they had to ask us to leave... but the party continued!!
Wish there were something like that happening again. I know she does off-the-cuff shows, but for some reason that first stint in Vegas was MAGICAL.

I think we need Ledgie t-shirts or something for all the people that last more than 5 years here ;)
Your post count here is 6,666!
I'm here. I have been very inactive for years. My FB addiction eclipsed this one. Also like Maria said, with no new material I really don't come here. This new album has been a really fun reunion for us all I think.

hey hookers. I'm rarely online really. life and stuff is just crazy busy. I still check in now and then just to be sure I haven't missed any exciting news, but don't really care to post or be involved in a message board anymore. like everyone else, I just don't have the time. I get Google alerts for Stevie and Fleetwood Mac so that pretty much tells me what I need to know. it's so sad because the other day I realized I was scrolling through new pictures of Stevie and I WASN'T right click+saving every single one. haha. times, they are a changin'. I'm so out of touch. I really just use my Facebook and that's about it. I was looking forward to seeing a lot of folks at Webster Hall, but we know how that turned out. other than that, I just prance with peeps when NOTS rolls around. I sure wish I was going to the LA birthday bash!
hope everyone is doing well!

Well, she and her husband Marty were the CREATORS of this site, so maybe the "properties" of it changed over the years? I've read that it has different formats, before my time.

So 2000 must be the year The Ledge got the current format. Cause I immediately registered my user here.
But in the 90s there was the old Ledge, where all threads and its post titlles could be seen in one page. I guess the number of ledgies grew to the point that the site often collapsed, and Marty changed it to the current format, probably with more powerful servers.
And it was also part of The Penguin, who had a different appeareance, too. The lyric interpretations was there, too. So many great memories of those years.

Certainly has changed a lot over the years. Think it was between 1993/1995 that I first came on here, the Cyber Penguin, I did create a login, but when I came back years and years later I couldn't remember what it was (I do remember my password was 'witch' or some variation of as I recall Lis/Marty emailing me back saying "she's not really a witch you know". Don't remember my user name or email or whatever at that time.
I've spent most of my time lurking both here and on the usenet boards back long time ago. Can't even remember much from back then, 30 years has passed. Even my FM fandom has mostly passed, though I do still watch old Stevie clips and say to my wife "she was sooooooooo hot back then..." My wife's hatred of Stevie has never died, 26 years on....

I'd actually always thought it was you (but my memory ain't what it was), and would have been mid/late '90s I reckon. I was still living at home with my parents. I discovered Stevie when I was 19/20, and discovered the Cyber Penguin when I was doing night classes on computing. Literally did a class about the internet, which sounds crazy today...
I too have no memory of the old Ledge, I recall it wasn't a very nice place sometimes, which is why I didn't spend much time there.

I don't remember have seen alt.net.fleetwood.mac at all. If I did, probably I just checked or posted a couple times. But almost sure I didn't.
By mid 90s I didn't have internet at home, but I was responsible of IT operations at my job, so I could enter the internet freely. Access controls were not implemented yet.
And it was at my desk that I discovered The Nicks Fix and The Penguin. Probably it was the same day, and found them thru Yahoo. By those days I liked Yahoo more than Google.

I don't remember have seen alt.net.fleetwood.mac at all. If I did, probably I just checked or posted a couple times. But almost sure I didn't.

Joe Admire got the charter started to establish the group on the alt.music hierarchy, so he’s really the Prime Mover.
In the early 1990s, a lot of us got started with that group because the web hadn’t really developed enough by then to make it graphically or visually interesting, whereas you could talk and talk on usenet. Our Mac group wasn’t the warmest place in the world, to put it mildly. Lots of hissing and spitting. I was a nasty b*tch. The appeal was that we were conversing in real time with each other instead of sending USPS. The idea of snail mail for fan groups is so ridiculous today, but that was all you had.

I was working in a big newspaper then, and the tech-heads in the newsroom library were just turning me on to the internet. Then little ISPs started popping up everywhere. You’d set up an account with them, rent a dial-up modem, hook everything up, and spend all afternoon and evening until about 3 a.m. reading your newsgroup.
And it was at my desk that I discovered The Nicks Fix and The Penguin. Probably it was the same day, and found them thru Yahoo.
Netscape Navigator, anyone? A block of text with a monochromatic background and a bunch of underlined hyperlinks. And we were excited.

Of course! Though at the bank where I worked we had a corporate deal with Microsoft, the Netscape was a more reliable and optimal browser. Those photos you shared, they bring back nostalgia for those days.

Can't remember what year I entered The Ledge, but it was definitely before the 1997 reunion. Also I can't remember in what year it changed to the current format.
I was lurking in 2000-ish, and I'm pretty sure, mostly sure, it looked like this format even then. Maybe it changed in '98 with the Steve solo comeback?

Probably it was that year. But the reason was that the old format collapsed frequently. The current format resides in a more powerful design, and better organized. And sure more powerful software servers.

I remember the old usenet group. I posted there occasionally. I have been on the Ledge for a very long time, but only post now and again. I was more active on the message board on the old Christine McVie website when In the Meantime was released many years ago. Her website doesn't exist anymore, does it? I still lurk on this website and read threads occasionally, mostly on Christine's forum and occasionally on the pre-Rumours forum. I guess I feel there's really nothing new to say and I'm kind of amazed there's still discussion going on, but I suppose with such a massively popular group there are always people who will find subjects to discuss, and that's a good thing.

Does usenet even still exist? I remember when my ISP dropped it. You could subscribe to it, but hell, that's been 20 years ago.

I had a similar feeling too. And it's so strange since there were lot of fans of other bands that didn't have a phenomenom like Rumours. But even in the 80s I met many people that didn't know Fleetwood Mac.

I'm certainly glad we did it. glad he convinced me.
i remember the day we got this email from john complimenting us on the site and i was so skeptical...i wrote back something like, 'i doubt you're the real John McVie, but i'll assume you're a fan!' etc, and he wrote back , 'This really is McVie!' and then offered to help us out w details etc when he had time (not this his memory was ever stellar lol) .
so i kind of believed him, but not 100%. I asked for chris's middle name for her bio (at that time this was *nowhere* to be found on the internet!) and he told me it was Anne. so being the lunatic that I was/am, i did some research and got a document from the UK (using snail mail back and forth which took 100 years) and lo and behold, when i opened that envelope and saw her middle name was what he'd told me, i literally cried and hopped around the room. THAT was when i believed it was really him. watta moment.
and it still took me a good 8 years and lots of BS-ing back and forth to ask if he wanted to do a Q&A!

It was indeed. and it was someone here from the ledge who really pushed me to ask him, because for the longest time i was just resisting. i didn't want him to feel i was being opportunistic or anything I guess... i think it was blackcat?? does that ring a bell? kept gently pushing because it wouldn't hurt anything to ask...and so finally I did, after we'd done some others so I felt better telling him that so-and-so did one and enjoyed it etc. and he immediately went for it! that first one had a few bumps trying to get it done in the smoothest way, and he always "emptied his folders" after sending so if anything needed to be re-sent, i was screwed. and several times, replies disappeared!! it aged me, losing some of those replies lol
and of course the best part was that HE asked two more times if he could come back!! he said he really enjoyed doing them when he had some time. and what a great resource those turned out to be. our q&a's are referenced in books all the time. (Mark Blake did not, but i wrote him after seeing at least 3 mentions from john's Q&A and he apologized lmao, nice chap.)

Incredible story.
Did not Bob Welch's wife post here? When I got my first computer back in 2000 Bob had his website and its almost impossible to believe but back then you could email him directly and buy an autographed CD from him. The stories he would tell on his site. At the time I did not think it was that big of a deal. But now boy do I regret not buying stuff and engaging him. 2 favorite tales from his site were how Mick and Chris would give him side eye and hated his speaking mid song like on the Bermuda Triangle. Another story was when the White Album was still be recorded he ran into Lindsey at some bar or club and Lindsey asked him "how the hell did you get along with these people?" LMAO
I was recently watching an old Bob interview and he was telling the story of his first band and album after leaving the Mac. He said when the Mac heard it they thought it was trash and he felt the band really believed their legacy was hurt by Bob's new music. He said NOTHING made him happier knowing the band was pissed off and angry with his new music

I think he said that Christine was a sarcastic bitch.
For me, he gave me a LONG response, explaining how different types of royalties work.
I too always wanted to engage him, and invite him and Wendy to dinner. But I never worked up the nerve, afraid of rejection. I was leaving Nashville the morning that he killed himself, and instantly regretted my reluctance.

What did he answer?
I dont think he gave a direct answer. It was in context of the difficulties working with the Mac and articulating the struggles working with the band. Bob often called Fleetwood Mac royalty because they could talk down to people especially Chris. Stevie and Lindsey were 2 new kids on the block. Lindsey was a young California kid working with very stubborn, established English musicians. No doubt there was clash. The wild success put all that to bed though ;)
BTW, I think I misquoted him. I believe Lindsey said "how the hell could you stand to work with these people?"

This sh1t is 50 years ago. It WAS a different time.
I know all anti/offensive-gay expressions were more accepted 50 years ago, the world was different (that doesn't mean it wasn't wrong), but was it the same with the pro nazi stuff? I'm not sure. I thought it was very questionable even in the 70s/80s (I remember Hitler's book was already banned).
Anyway it just mean they, we, are all human beings, with good and bad things. Sometimes very bad things. John seems to be a good person, but that "maintains a collection of Third Reich memorabilia" as Mick wrote, is very controversial. I don't know if he has talked about it in any interview.
I will always like Fleetwood Mac's music, just as one of my favorite movies has never stopped being Midnight in Paris, even though there are arguments that indicate that Woody is an a---ole. Learning that all those talented people have bad attitudes or ugly defects, it's dissapointing anyway.

I think somebody did ask him in a Q&A and he said he collected "stuff" and included WW2 memorabilia in that group. I mean he married a jewish woman so i don't think i'd ever put him in a Nazi category. maybe growing up, that whole war time period just was very interesting to him...? and as some of us have said, it was also a verrry different time, a different generation.

I think the Halloween costume stuff gets overblown. Growing up in the 70s many people would put on Hitler mustaches to be Hitler at Halloween. Halloween used to be about scary stuff but also horrendously cringe stuff that turned into a nightmare when the political correctness started. If someone wore a Nazi uniform outside of Halloween then thats a whole other weirdo. But I believe John wore the costume and Chris did a black Aunt Jemima black face and costume for Halloween. Both would not be accepted today. Black Face is an American era mocking black people. I am not sure a Brit growing up in England would have any context of American history. But again, its Halloween and people would often find the most offensive costume they could wear. Prince Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party many years ago. The Nazi's bombed and murdered lots of Brits. It was insane anyone in the royal family to do that even as a joke. But that is a completely different context of high, drunken rock stars from the 1970s. This was what Halloween was. Today college fraternities get banned for posing for photos wearing sombreros and fake mustaches on Cinco De Mayo day.

Definitely the world has changed, and specially in recent years. I still haven't fully adapted and some changes still seem excessive to me (others are correct), since personally they were applied to things that I never found offensive.
Now that I see some old Aunt Jemima pictures in the web (I didn’t know it so I looked for), I see how similar to La Negrita (Little black woman) brand of peruvian desserts and cookies is. After 60 years the company decided to change the name La Negrita, and the picture to avoid racist connotations. Now it’s a more generic name related to sugar, and no face in the publicity.
With all respect, I found it ridiculous, cause many of those desserts were identified with the (delicious!) Afro-Peruvian gastronomy. Yes there is racism in Perú, but I had never heard any ugly racist joke using that name or picture. I thought in this case it wasn’t necessary to change it.
The most curious thing was that many in the Afro-Peruvian community (of course, from my generation) also found the change absurd. Rather than a favorable change to avoid racism, they felt they were losing a representation of their identity. Those desserts are inspired in typical pastry of a specific region where Afro-Peruvian community is very important in they are proud of their legacy.
But yes the world is changing, and I think we have to adapt. The point is to get more respect, so the purpose is good. Sometimes I think they go too far, but it is what it is.
