View Full Version : Stevie referencing her own lyrics on IYD

Anyone else notice Stevie references her own lyrics multiple times on In Your Dreams? Makes me wonder if it's her little hint that this may be her full circle last work. For instance:
In Your Dreams: "Come in out of the darkness" (Bella Donna)
Soldier's Angel: "No one walks away from this battle" (Battle Of The Dragon)
Everybody Loves You: "It isn't just that we cause each other such pain, everywhere we go now..." (Not Make Believe)
Ghosts Are Gone: "Like a ghost through the fog" (Angel)
Are there others I'm forgetting?
Any thoughts on this lyric recycling? I'm inclined to think that Everybody Loves You is either part of the same poem Not Make Believe was culled from, or it was written at the same time about a particular incident. Much like Destiny Rules and Illume shared verses... they were written at the same time, and branched out from the same incident.

I love when Stevie recycles - she's done it quite a bit on IYD, hasn't she?
Annabell Lee - "But I see the bright eyes" (Gypsy). Or was that Edgar's lyric first?

I love it! She's entitled to recycle. These songs are her world and a part of her mythology.

I liked it when she explained how the WTTRS was the same Sara. When you bring a lyrical thread from the past into a song, it makes it seem more layered, even if I realize the writer didn't always do it deliberately.

I noticed this as well and thought the same thing. Especially 'come in out of the darkness' being a line in the title track, just like it was on Bella Donna. I got this weird feeling when I heard that...
Either not direct references /not her OWN lyrics but...
"I used to dream that you were an angel" ~ "The angel of my dreams"
"Behind the mask of marti gras"
"Says 'I'm so afraid'..."
"It's a mystery to me"
And, this is more food for thought than a legitimate lyrical reference.. but I can't help but note the transition.. she used to want to wrap around your dreams, but now she's right down the middle of all of them. Hm.

I believe the line was originally "But I feel the bright eyes" and Stevie changed it to "see." So I do think this counts as a Gypsy reference...

I definitely noticed this too and it's interesting that you too have this etheral sense that this may well be her last work...I feel the same. When I first played the CD I just had this feeling, sort of like electricity flowing, a highly charged energy that spun through her songs. Her voice is amazing and the best it has been in decades. And then the reality hit me, this could be Stevie's last work because it feels so perfect and how she spattered in phrases from other songs, kind of like you said. Maybe it's not, but Stevie is getting to the age where one ponders their own mortality. And, like she said about Angel, she writes songs with a theme of darkness.

Even though there's no recycling, I think Soldier's Angel gives a nod to Desert's Angel, not only with the title, but in the way she sang about the soldier's family looking for them in Desert's Angel and the way she embodied the soldier's family members in Soldier's Angel.

Is this the third time she's used "like a ghost through a fog"? She really likes that simile.
Normally, I think it's kind of lazy when she does this ("Destiny" and "Enchanted" bother me the most.) But I think they work for the most part here, especially "come in out of the darkness."

I would say that's because "Destiny" was the early version of "Enchanted", so she didn't just use a line from a previous song, she simply recorded the early version of an existing song.

Stevie didn't change much word-wise in Annabel Lee. The line is I see the bright eyes. Which being that Stevie has had her version of Annabel Lee rolling around in her head since she was 17 I have a feeling she lifted the line for Gypsy.

Poe's original lines are 'stars never rise' & 'feel the bright eyes' instead of Stevie's 'sun never shines' & 'see the bright eyes'.

I've beenb meaning to ppost this exact thread! I really like that she's referenced herself so muhc, great continuity. As others have said, she's done it before but it really works on this album.

Moonlight seems to reference Candlebright ('then she sees him, candle burning", Frozen Love ("they drop to the forest floor...frozen") and The Highwaymen ("he slows down")
Candlebright
For no special reason
I am leaving you for awhile tonight
I'm flying far above you
Still I love you
You make things right
I've been with you before
I'll be with you again
I'll come back for more, yea
The story has a strange ending
Well, you know me I'm a nomad
I can't feel bad
About the way I am
I've been rolling around
My whole life
You're my candlebright in the window
You guide me back again
And I come when you shine
You are not my friend, no
But I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer
I am something of a dreamer
Still I love you
My candlebright
You are not my friend
But still I love you
You're my candlebright
Still I love you
But you are not my friend
But still I love you
I can't feel bad
From "The Highwayman" ? "And then he sees her coming/Heartbeats on the wind/Considers slowing down/But then...he could never win?

Everybody Loves You- "Sometimes it was heavenly, sometimes it was too heavy" (Not Make Believe)
In one of the new songs she says, "No words were spoken," so of course I thought of No Spoken Word.
