'Extra's Stevie Nicks Fix: A Secret Journal Past Loves and New Album
Rock and roll's gypsy goddess Stevie Nicks invited "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli to her home and revealed the one true love of her life, and opened up her secret journal for the first time
One of the entries included a recent taping of her appearance on "Oprah." The singer said, "Well, it's done, and I think the interview between me and Oprah went well, even though she's not easy to win over." When Jerry asked why, she explained, "Well, I think, God bless her, she has talked to a lot of people!"
As Nicks and Jerry continued to flip through her treasured journal, Stevie said, "This is the original lyrics to 'For What It's Worth' (singing) 'You said that even if I left my girlfriend, packed up my stuff, loaded my car, drove down to your house...'"
The former Fleetwood Mac singer has sold 140 million albums, and after a decade is releasing a new album, "In Your Dreams," recorded in her home studio. "It was like renting a beautiful old southern mansion and making it a magical album," and added," I am thrilled."
While her music career continues to find success, Stevie's personal life remains a bit quieter. Nicks told Penacoli she does not have a boyfriend because "I choose not to. I chose to be an artist." Reminiscing about her past loves, she revealed she experienced "love at first sight twice." She confessed, "One person, you know. He's a famous rock star... it's not important to talk about him, but what is important is that I saw him from across a room and I fell in love with him that day."
The second time was with Fleetwood Mac's lead guitarist, Lindsey Buckingham. "He was absolutely the romantic love of my life." Stevie speculated, "I think if we had not moved from San Francisco to L.A., both of us feel we would have gotten married and stayed there, and we also believe we would have still been famous." The songstress has no regrets "because that was our destiny."

Although, I have to say this article was kind of confusing - they made it seem like she met Joe before she met Lindsey.

Well, I'm pretty sure she's talking about Joe because she has described her falling in love with him/meeting him that way before, with the whole love at first sight thing. But there's been a lot of famous rock stars, and she also met Lindsey in a similar way - seeing him across the room, etc, so it can get to be rather confusing.

You know I ultimately feel sad for Stevie when it comes to hearing about her past relationships because clearly alot of them were probably meaningless flings which is probably what she wanted at the time but the way she always makes excuses for not commiting to a relationship because of her job has always annoyed me. She either has severe commitment issues or is terrified to get hurt so she avoids them all together. Just hearing her talk about Lindsey since well... forever there is no doubt that he was ALWAYS the main love of her life and SHE let him get away.

Yes, I think she has. Most of the time she doesn't say love at first sight herself, she just concedes it was when asked. Like the interviewer will say, "was it love at first sight" and she'll say it was. She says she saw him and he was beautiful. So, she very carefully made her way over to him and he didn't let on that he was impressed too, but she gathers he must have been, since he remembered to call her (or have someone else do it) two years later.

Ah, found the quote that I was thinking of: "When I first met him, he was going with somebody and so was I, but I fell totally in love with him. I was captivated. "
Edit: However, in the video, Stevie says she has had love at first sight twice and the interviewer asks if it's anyone we know, and she says, "One you know.." almost as if the other one is someone we don't know..

For her to think that she and Lindsey would have gotten married and stayed that way is ludicrous. Even if they made it famous as BN, I think fame and the world it opened up to them would have torn them apart. Money and the rock stars they meant. In the parallel marriage universe, I think they would have given into temptation and been torn asunder, just like they were in the real universe.
The best scenario I see for them is if she'd gotten off of Klonopin sooner, maybe we could have gotten another FM album and they would have come together romantically then. So, let's say his brother dies, she reaches out to him and he comes to the BTM shows in December 1990, if she hadn't been wacked out, maybe that would have been the ideal time for both a band and a personal reconciliation. Maybe they would have been mature enough then to have made it work.
I think she thinks this too and it's one of the things she laments most about the lost K years.

I agree with most of this. And I've always thought that that quote where she says "I fell in love with Joe the way Lindsey fell in love with me" is very telling. People think it's arrogant, but I think it's very clear-eyed about power dynamics.
There are so many episodes in the SnL story, from the very early days onwards, that show Stevie being restless, elusive, half-in and half-out, leaving and coming back to LB when the grass turns out not be greener on the other side after all .... 'Candlebright', for example, tells this story. And LB lyrics such as SHN and Monday Morning - even GYOW, up to a point - express his inability to resist her, no matter how miserable she makes him.
And I think that the shoe was on the other foot for Stevie, with Joe. He could treat her appallingly and she would take it, because there was just something about him that 'turned all her music on'. That, and the drugs, I think, led her into a spiral of self-abasement that only ended when she went to Betty Ford (and then resurfaced during Klonopin, when I think the abortion(s) were a huge factor).
As for her letting LB slip away - yes, I think one of the main reasons they never got it together was that she just couldn't believe that LB was as good as it got, and the reason she couldn't believe that was because of how bad it could be, and the fact that even when it was good, it was so rarely easy. And because she is a romantic, I think for the longest time Stevie held out for a relationship that was perfect - and that is never going to be the case for them, because their personalities are so different.

I agree with what you're saying in Stevie and Lindsey's case I always thought that back then Lindsey loved Stevie wayyyyyy much more than Stevie loved Lindsey which is not to say she didn't love him it just seemed she thought their relationship was gonna be fun but once it stopped being fun she wanted out hence all the times they split even before they joined FM. When Stevie broke up with Lindsey because she wanted her freedom and wanted to see what was out there I don't think Stevie had any doubt in her mind that she thought one day down the road that two of them would eventually get back together but that didn't happen for whatever reason drugs, anger, resentment, jealousy. Now I think the shoe is kind of on the other foot I think Stevie realized to late that Lindsey really was the one for her and the fact that he is married now with kids must be painful as hell for Stevie to see.

This is exactly how i see it too. She made a statement during SYW something like " Oh Stevie you made such a big mistake " ( letting LB go ) . I think it was in reference to seeing him with his kids. It's got to be such intimate, personal torture to see what a great father he could of been to their kids. Pretty sad really :distress:

Yes, but I also believe her when she says it could never be. They just don't fit, not on the kind of day-to-day, normal, domestic basis that LB obviously decided was what he needed in his life, rather than the high drama that SN seems incapable of giving up.
I think the truth is he always wanted a Kristen. Someone who would support and not compete. I mean, look at his partners: line them up, and Stevie sticks out like a sore thumb. Every other woman he was with for any length of time was a rock star's girlfriend straight from central casting. Kristen, arguably, is an ageing rock star's wife from central casting.
Stevie might not be too much woman for LB these days, but she's always been too much person.

Side note, Stevie sounds so good singing For What It's Worth in that little clip. And I love the look the interviewer shot the camera when she started, like "Holy ****, Stevie Nicks is singing a song to me from the pages of her journal.."
Edit: Also, even Stevie's comments in this one video don't match up. She says that if she and LB had stayed in San Fran, they feel they would have gotten married etc... but then she goes on to say that they didn't even start going together until after they moved to LA to do Buckingham Nicks, and it's because of the whole leaving the other 3 guys that they got intimate/closer....

Very true, i think you're onto something here. Too much person is a great way to say it. I don't know that the 9-5 of being a wife and mother is something that would have agreed with Stevie. Maybe, but well i just don't know. I guess because we've never seen her in that light it's hard to visualize. Kristen does seem more like that person to me.

Unlike CAH, I think Caspari was more like Anne Heche actually. She had her own career or wanted one. It just never took off. I never got the impression that she was a homemaker. I remember an interview where Lindsey was happy to say he spent his spare time helping his girlfriend run lines.
And even though Anne wasn't with him full time, it sounded like he was into the relationship and she broke it off during the tour, because she didn't want to live in his world, being the supportive woman in the wings. But it seems like with those two, he was attracted to women who wanted their own careers, even if it pulled them away from him. That flash and drive they had drew him in. To me, really, Carol Ann is the one who sticks out like a sore thumb.

I think what surprised her is that he could resist her. That's why he sang "You only want me when I get over you." Because he did seem to get over her and then she wanted back. She thought his love was so great that he'd be running after her and he didn't. So, she went off and he and Richard just stayed in L. A. and did their thing until she came back. She says she had to come back and eat crow. I think part of her might have wanted him to chase her and beg her to return and that didn't happen.
In the Rolling Stone interview Christine noted how Lindsey was at first miserable when they broke up, but then he began getting girlfriends together. I think that surprised Stevie, which is why she complained that she didn't bring boyfriends around Lindsey, but he always had girls around, which made her stomach turn in the breakfast room.
Then, in 1987, he left the band altogether, which I think she never believed would happen. And he stayed away from her to such an extent that she said if she called him and he heard it was her on the other end, he would only hang up the phone. I think she's right that his love was very deep, but she always seemed surprised that despite the depth, he could sever himself from her, in a way that she couldn't. He wasn't indifferent or apathetic, but he could seem that way and she never could.
In fact, it only seems to be since around The Dance that he seems unable to stay away from her. He does seem to be chasing her more now and she's not chasing him -- which is ironic, since he's married. But it never seemed to be like that before, to me. He could cut himself off. Go cold turkey.

I disagree. None of those women even came close to the status in their field that LB had/has in his. With the exception of Anne Heche, none of them achieved anything beyond hobby /dilettante status. As for being happy to run lines, well, why not? You have to fill the long LA nights somehow. But it's not like he was having to pose on a red carpet as Cheri's arm candy, or, um, pick up that signed copy of her number-one solo album. That would be more of a test.
But more than any of them, look at who he did eventually end up with. Surely Kristen = the anti-Stevie?

Yes, her hoping he would chase her - at certain times - is definitely part of it. In fact, I think there's a huge 'cry wolf' factor in SN's behaviour towards LB. She 'left' him so many times that they got used to operating in quite a few different modes: 'together', 'broke up', 'on a break', 'together but with other people', 'broke up but still having sex', etc etc. And the longer that sort of thing went on, the harder it would be to ever know exactly where you are, to the point where I really think a tiny bit of SN still believes that she and LB are currently just on a really long break, while he has this marriage-thing, and raises these kid-things.
But I also think that the times when LB has gone cold turkey have been about self-preservation. Not wanting to play any more, because it's so exhausting and ultimately destructive. Or, of course, it could be that he learned very early on that not chasing her was the surest way to make sure she would eventually come back?

I didn't say they did. What I think they had was ambition and the type that made them eventually frustrated just to be his arm candy.
When I said Lindsey was happy to run lines with Cheri, I didn't suggest that he would be happy taking the back seat to her career. I don't think he would be. But I also think he is attracted to women who are somewhat self-aggrandizing and aspiring and not particularly homebodies. Whether or not they had the talent to become as successful as Stevie is is beyond my point. I think they had the drive and the restlessness. I don't think Lindsey was really into the "girl next door" type. I think he kind of is drawn to the ones who like the drama and that he has never gone for passive women. When he used to talk about Big Love, he discussed being with crazy women and acknowledged that it was because he was crazy himself. I think there's truth in that. Logically, what would have been nice and sane to have in a partner wasn't what drew him in.
As for Kristen, she may make a great home for him, but she's not the traditional "homemaker."
But I also think that the times when LB has gone cold turkey have been about self-preservation. Not wanting to play any more, because it's so exhausting and ultimately destructive.
True. I don't think Lindsey went cold turkey because he didn't love Stevie. I think he always remained in love with that girl he'd known. As she grew older and turned back into that girl he says he used to know, he suddenly seemed a lot less inclined to stay away. He seems to have been flirting with her ever since -- ever since we started seeing them again in 1997.
But there was a time when Stevie said that Lindsey just plain didn't like her, that even her laugh drove him crazy and I think he was both irritated with her flakiness during those years and grieving what he had and what he lost -- not because she left him, but because he felt she had changed so much. She said that cocaine makes you lose your sensitivity and caring. I think he felt the loss of that in her, which was harder to accept than the break up itself.

Looking at the Extra video Stevie posted, I don't think Stevie was talking about Lindsey being one of the 2 people she fell in love with at first sight. One was a famous rock star and she doesn't say that the other was Lindsey -- well she might have because then they talked about Lindsey. Maybe that part was edited out of the video.
But just looking at the clip, based on past statements, I would say Joe and Rupert. Didn't she say she walked right into Rupert's arms the first time she saw him and she came and sat right in Joe's lap when she saw him or something like that?

I thought it was Joe whose arms she walked right into?
I thought the same thing about the video and mentioned it a few pages back. It could have been the way it's edited, but the way she said, "Well, one you know.." like of the two, there was also another whom we don't know.
Even more confusing is how the written article words it to make it seem as if she met Lindsey AFTER she met Joe.

Yes, she said she saw Joe in a bar at the Mansions Hotel in Dallas and crawled right into his lap, but I also thought she had a very similar story for Rupert, looking into his eyes and falling the very first time.

Love the last several pages of this thread, great to hear so many people expressing so well the thoughts about these two that I've had.
Despite whatever love was/is between these two, they are also clearly SUPER competitive with each other, and I agree with the previous poster who said they would eventually have broken up due to the strains of the business.
In this way I don't think these two are any different than members of other bands. Pick any rock band you want, and always always always the two main players have a love/hate relationship: Jagger/Richards, Tyler/Perry, Daltrey/Townshend, Lennon/McCartney, sh*t even Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley bicker and backstab. The best example was a 60 Minutes interview in the last few years with Glen Frey and Don Henley. The interviewer himself (think it was Steve Kroft) commented on how when he was interviewing each one separately the other would make faces, roll their eyes, be totally bored...and they showed some of the footage.
I think being in a band where you have to deal with another person day and night without a break for yearssssss on end kills ANY relationship.
As much as I love speculating about them hooking up, part of me really does think they play up the fans' hopes and dreams about their relationship. Wasn't it a CNN interview together where Stevie said something to the effect that they get to go onstage everynight and pretend to have a romance..... She's no dummy ....

You never grow up when you're in a band it seems. In his recent book, Keith takes pleasure in relaying the fact that Mick has a small penis. They could still be boys sparring on a playground.
Stevie said she commiserated with Don about being in a band but told him she had it worse, because he was never lovers with Glen (that she knows of, I guess).
She said the band dynamics made it hard to be Lindsey's "old lady" because the band would want him to finish a guitar part and he'd come home and want her sympathy about the pressure he was getting from the band, but she couldn't give it to him as a girlfriend because inside the part of her that was a band member was wishing that he would finish the doggone guitar part too. So, it's business and romance interests colliding.

As a recovering shipper (yes, I am in a 12 step program:p) this comment makes me wonder. I would not put it past Stevie to "pretend" to have a romance on stage. The woman has flat out said it's not about art all the time it's about selling records. I think she feels that way even more when it comes to the Mac than her solo records. The Mac is a cash cow at this point and she understands its purpose.
But, I just can't see Lindsey "pretending" to do anything. He is always talking about the big machine, etc. The Destiny Rules doc. made it obvious, as if it hadn't already been, that he resists commercial pressures. So, why would he go up on stage and fake a chemistry with someone just to please consumers? I don't know maybe he would, but it just seems like a contradiction to everything he always preaches. And often times he is the one who is initiating it and is met with resistance by Stevie.

Actually, I think you have it backwards. Lindsey has realized (and told us ad nauseum that the "big machine" (i.e., Fleetwood Mac) is where the money comes from, and thus he goes along with the "commercial pressures," as you put it: doing what people want, playing up the on-stage dramatics, putting out "safer" music, giving people what they expect from the Fleetwood Mac "machine."
But now that he knows he can have his "little machine," he has embraced it. Three solo albums in...what...five years? Unheard of for LB standards! So as long as he can have the little machine for putting out his truly genuine, creative endeavors, he can go along with what is expected from the "big machine."

Hmmm. Interesting. I definitely can see your point. Everybody wins in this situation. I still just find it so odd that Lindsey would go along with it, but hey a brother has to get paid and if it allows him to put his solo projects out than I can't argue.

I believe Stevie is a classic love addict. She is attracted to men who cannot do intimacy, always chasing something elusive, and is more in love with the fantasy of the man than the actual man. It is easy to blame her career for lapses in love than to take a closer look. That said it sucks to take a closer look!

You can be a great artist and be in a committed relationship. Her idea that you can't is ancient and outdated. God knows I love Stevie, but she also would not be the easiest person to live with. I donno, I think Lindsey plays it up more than we think...On the last couple tours he did this thing where he would ball his fist up under his chin and kind of lean over and make cutesy faces at Stevie...totally playing it up...but it's also fun and flirty. It makes me think about soap opera stars and their on screen chemistry but in real life they are married to/dating someone else (just fyi - I think that would be an awesome job- making out with guys and gals on screen but not having to go home and wash their clothes and whatnot).
Anywho, with SnL, even if they are just playing it up for the audience, I think anyone that has the history they do with each other can't help but feeling that it's real sometimes. I mean, how many times over the years after they broke up do you think Stevie was giving Lindsey the -for real look of love- and wishing and hoping he was feeling it back and maybe he was just looking at her like wow... what a pathetic fatty.
I have very shipper like tendencies but I DO NOT believe they would ever really get back to together...it really would be pointless. I believe they have very deep feeling for each other...because they have been through so many ups and downs together and have know each other for sooo long. I don't think Stevie has ragging hormones and wants to jump his bones and I bet Lindsey needs a little male enhancement assistance at times so it's not really about the romantic part now...but it was when they were young and had two beautiful bodies, all in harmony and stuff.
Also all the speculation about who Stevie's songs are about is fun but it drives me crazy that for most of them we won't ever know the truth. They could all be about Lindsey and we'll never know...but I have a feeling whoever they are about know and it's probably this crazy little secret and whoever it is thinks - oh my gah, she is so telling all our business and I can't believe she's quoting me - but noone else knows. Crazy.

I don't see the point of the speculation here. None of us can truly know, no matter what we might want to read into her body language during an interview. Stevie is single because she wants to be, that's the bottom line. That's the choice she's made.

Yes, yes, yes to the bolded. Let's face it: Stevie's not livin' in the real world. She lives in her own special Stevieworld, a singular place that probably intrigues plenty of men, but would ultimately scare off anyone even marginally normal. The woman cannot drive and depends on a throng of friends/staff/roommates for every basic need. I don't see how her present lifestyle could possibly mesh with a typical long-term relationship.
Which, honestly, doesn't have to be a bad thing. I don't consider it tragic to be forever single. I do consider it tragic to lack long and meaningful relationships, but that's not true of Stevie--she's surrounded by many different kinds of love. There are probably times when she wonders what it would be to have a husband and children, but I tend to think she likes having Karen live with her, often joined by any number of back-up singers, fairy god-daughters, and old friends. It sounds like a very full life, to me.
It seems to hit a lot of nerves around here each time she declares, "I chose to be an artist. Not a wife/mother!" I can see why it would offend some, and she's clearly wrong in saying one can't be both: a number of rockstars are.
But it actually doesn't bother me, and I think people are overly harsh on her on this one. First, because her single, female-heavy environment may well be more inspiring and nurturing to her as an artist. Just because some artists aren't creatively impeded by husbands and children doesn't mean she wouldn't be. She might have known herself well enough to feel that she, at least, couldn't do both well. Second, because if she is indeed unhappy and in denial about her romantic life, as some have suggested (not you specifically), why not let her cling to this idea that she chose the only artist's path? Sometimes we all need a couple of delusions. If this idea helps get her through occasional times of regret and loneliness, she's more than welcome to espouse it IMO.
in all fairness guys..............we have no idea what this woman really has or has not tried to do. maybe he's laying beside her right now. maybe she's preparing his lunch. maybe he's rubbing her back. maybe they're holding hands under a tree....a willow tree. maybe they're necking. maybe they're fighting............just at eachother throats. maybe they're making love right now.........slow, passionate, deep and sensual!
we just don't know. she could be that kind of chick that has tried. tried to make changes in her crazy world just for him. maybe she's done this more than once, with a man she truly loves.........but it just didn't work out.
i don't like to play the "stevie is stuck in her ways" game all the time. she's a woman and WE ALL KNOW how women change their minds.
p.s.........shippers know who my "he" is........i'm just saying. reality......we prob never even seen this guy before.
 Girl, I cannot even believe you've claimed I'm more of a shipper than you! Not even close:xoxo:
Anyway, Stevie has admitted that she tends to be inflexible in relationships. In the Crystal Visions Commentary for Stand Back she says something to the effect of, "Like I willow, I can bend. I can be flexible! Except in relationships, I'm actually really not at all. I don't bend..."
So yeah, she might be kind of rigid (granted, this is Stevie: ask her again in an hour). But really, I think she has created her own Stevieworld exactly to her liking and probably wouldn't sacrifice it easily. But I agree with you--it's totally possible that she's tried to in the past, but been prevented by something else. She's said she would have given it all up for Joe Walsh, at least--we really have no way of knowing beyond that.
And really, that does not make her a bad or selfish person--I think many people actually give too much of themselves in relationships and end up resenting their partner, which might be even more destructive. Stevie has flaws, but everyone else does, including all of the men she's been with. It always puts a bad taste in my mouth when people blame all of her aborted romances of Stevie's limitations. How can we possibly know?
I agree 100% with her that you can't be an artist to the full extent and have a relationship (flings don't count) and/or kids. I've seen too much proof of it for both males and females. Something gives, or gives up. Another common situation that's tough is when you maintain your focus, but your friends and family, who may have other interests, move on to have kids and relationships; it really changes the dynamic of your environment anyway.

I don't see the point of the speculation here. None of us can truly know, no matter what we might want to read into her body language during an interview. Stevie is single because she wants to be, that's the bottom line. That's the choice she's made.
I'm with you on that!

Does anyone think it is weird that Stevie mentions twice in this interview that she and Lindsey had to fire the other three members of the band (Frittz)? Seems to me that Lindsey and Stevie walked away from the band on the advise of others and started Buckingham Nicks. The band broke up because they walked away. Nobody was fired, they disbanded.

One thing that Stevie is known for is her someone "selective" memory.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham would have become a happily married couple had they not moved to Los Angeles and become members of Fleetwood Mac, according to the Landslide singer.
In a candid interview with U.S. news show Extra, Nicks insists she and "the romantic love of my life" were destined to be together forever - until they became rock stars in one of the biggest supergroups ever.
She says, "I think had we not moved from San Francisco to L.A. both of us feel that we would have gotten married and stayed there.
"And we also believe that we would have still been famous."

^If they'd still have become famous, then they wouldn't have stayed in San Francisco. They would have had to go to Los Angeles anyway, one way or another. Once around all the alternatives offered by "the business" they would have broken up anyway.

What's interesting to me is that, often in the same breath that she says they weren't a couple until they went to LA and breaking away from Fritz drove them together... she says, if they never would have gone to LA, they would have gotten married.
What.

I love how Stevie always takes it upon herself to speak for Lindsey. She also cares so much about some stranger finding out a husband of 20 or 30 years may be the subject of one of her songs (Secret Love), but she doesn't give a damn if LB and his wife are offended by public comments like these.

Excellent point. I too have been confused about what Stevie says in these types of interviews. I wonder if Kristen ever gets wind of them. I swear Stevie keeps mentioning LB in these types of comments to get some press. I love Stevie, but my gosh, he is married and has kids. Why say these types of things in public that could start another feud that could interrupt a future FM project? I mean.. really...
