Confirmed - Stevie has confirmed that this song is about Lindsey
Beyond Reasonable Doubt - You could take your case to court
Possibly - There are elements that make it seem like it could be about Lindsey but not sure
Probably Not - Can't find any evidence that it's about Lindsey or other confirmed facts point away from Lindsey
Definitely Not - Topic confirmed by Stevie and it's not about Lindsey
1. Secret Love - Definitely Not
2. For What It's Worth - Probably Not (pre-The Dance)) / Possibly ("Got to be a part of a great romance.") Amlyn suggests that the timeframe may be Enchanted!
3. In Your Dreams - Probably Not (pre-Say You Will) / Possibly (the holding hand imagery)
4. Wide Sargasso Sea - Possibly
5. New Orleans - Definitely Not
6. Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream) - Confirmed
7. Annabel Lee - Possibly: Stevie is Annabel Lee and Lindsey is Poe!!!
8. Soldier's Angel - Beyond Reasonable Doubt ("first love" and he's on the song)
9. Everybody Loves You - Confirmed
10. Ghosts Are Gone - Beyond Reasonable Doubt ("ghost through a fog" pace Angel, Sweet Girl -- per WildHearted)
11. You May Be The One - Beyond Reasonable Doubt
12. Italian Summer - Probably Not (he's married!) / Possibly (the guitar makes me wonder)
13. Cheaper Than Free - Probably Not
Total: 5-9 out of 14

Apart from Moonlight and Everybody Loves You, I'm 100% convinced You May Be The One is about Lindsey; there's just too much pointing towards him in the lyrics for me to let that one go.
I wish Buckingham Nicks still updated, the speculation section never fails to link almost every song to Lindsey without fail. But that's why it's so brilliant.

I think you could make a really really strong case about Ghosts Are Gone.
I can't make sense of the choruses really, but all of the verses... yes. Not to mention the 'Like a ghost through the fog' line, coming back again from Angel and Sweet Girl..

My guesses:
1. Secret Love - Definitely Not
2. For What It's Worth - Very possible
3. In Your Dreams- Probably Not--she claims it was someone around during TISL. (TP? WW?)
4. Wide Sargasso Sea - Probably not. I'm leaning towards an englishman--most likely Mick.
5. New Orleans - Definitely Not
6. Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream) - Confirmed
7. Annabel Lee - Probably not--she loved Poe before she met Lindsey, I think. Probably just a poem she fell in love/a doll, possibly Robin on "she was a child and I was a child"--that shared bond of youth.
8. Soldier's Angel - Probably not--I think it's really just for the soldiers.
9. Everybody Loves You - Confirmed
10. Ghosts Are Gone - Very possibly
11. You May Be The One - Almost definitely
12. Italian Summer - Probably not
13. Cheaper Than Free - Definitely not

I agree with you about everything except Italian Summer. I wish there was a category for stronger than possibly, but weaker than Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.
I will go with, More Probable Than Not, which is the civil burden of proof:laugh:.

I never thought that about GAG when we were listening to the stream, but then when she described it about finally closing the door on a relationship, I thought of it differently.

I tend to think Ghosts are Gone is about Joe for some reason. All her downgrading of that relationship lately, and her re-assessing dramatic relationships and all.
You May Be The One does make me wonder about Mick... the part about the islands... and words flying across the sea... he does live in Hawaii and they did have that spat over Silver Springs at one point... but again, who knows!
Wild Sargasso Sea is just her writing about fictional characters as she does.. it's just a song about what literally happens in the story of the book.

Why does it matter? I don't get.
It doesn't matter. But in the great scheme of things nothing in FM discussions matters. That's why Jonas Salk doesn't hang around this site much.
The fact is, to some people, being able to put a story to a song makes it resonate more. The feeling and emotion somehow enhance the audio experience. That's why Broadway tunes may sound hokey . . . until after you've seen them come alive in the context of the play.
If they know it's about a father who lost a child, it changes the way some people hear HAEWAFY. Strange but true.
If knowing things make some people more interested in the music, there's nothing that needs to be understood. That's just how people feel.

How funny is it the acronym for that song is GAG, not that it has any bearing on the quality of the song itself....

And Hawaii is one thing that made me think about Lindsey, because they were all in Hawaii while he was still in California and they had a fight. We were told that that the fight was about SYW, but this song made me think it was more personal and that SYW was just the tip of an iceberg.

I have a pretty high-stress job and indulging in a little "mindless" speculation about FM members is a great way to de-stress. I sure as hell don't live my life around it..but it's a fun way to spend a few minutes and lighten things up. :woohoo:

"I used to think that you were an angel" and "Says I'm so afraid... " pretty much solidify, in my mind, the argument that YMBTO is LB. Not to mention the "You say it's taken years of regret and pain.."
So basically that whole stanza.

4. Wide Sargasso Sea - Possibly

7. Annabel Lee - No. As sad as the thought is, I think the reason she relates to this is a child.

10. Ghosts Are Gone - Definitely.
11. You May Be The One - Definitely
12. Italian Summer - Definitely.
13. Cheaper Than Free - Could be? Love the song but the lyrics are a little generic, so I'm thinking this is just an "in general" song. If that makes sense.

Just my thoughts here but first time I heard Wide Sargasso Sea, the name Rupert Hine jumped out at me. If you read what Stevie wrote about him in her notes for Rooms On Fire on Timespace, there are a few clues there. She writes that when he walked into a room, the room seemed like it was on fire and that when she left him "the rooms were still burning", and on WSS she writes about burning the Englishman's house down. Rupert is English and lived in England. She also sings about going " back into her red dress".......just like the one she is wearing on the cover of OSOTM ? Plus we all know that something happened between them and it was intense and shortlived. Stevie seemed to have some bitterness and regret over that whole relationship and that's what I feel in that song.

This is an excerpt from another interview posted in another thread. I thought it warranted discussion here.
You wrote “For What It’s Worth” with Mike Campbell from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. How’d that come about?
I wrote that song in May in Hawaii in 2010. Dave went to England and got stuck in that volcano. So I said, “Well, I’m going to go to Hawaii then.” I went for three weeks. and the day before I came back, I said, I’m going to revisit Mike’s tracks, because he had sent me 10 tracks.
Right when [that track] came on, I just remembered this trip that I had taken in a bus across the United States and this person who had really helped me through this very difficult time. The song starts with the bell ringing like a train and I thought about the bus and, strangely enough, the night before that on PBS was a show about kids riding the rails in the 1940s, they were 14, 15,16 years old, they would catch the trains and go to other cities. I also had a grandfather who told me many stories of riding the rails because he did it, he used to ride the rails and play in bars and play pool.
So I was thinking about my granddad and riding the rails and I was thinking about my bus trip and then I started thinking about this man who had really been like an angel, stepping in and putting the pieces back together at a very bad time in my life and I just started singing this song. I yelled at my assistant, “Get me some paper! Quick!” We’d sent all our recording equipment home the day before so all we had was a camera so we just put it on film
I'm torn at what I think about who this can be about. The only bus I know Stevie spent time on was her Enchanted tour. I've heard rumors that LB was with her on that and after reading some of the stories posted about LB helping her with rehab, it makes me just melt and want this song want to be about him. But again, I could be down some shipper spiral. I need to ponder more...

The more I listen to IYD and particularly as I hear all the references back to old song lyrics the more convinced I become that this album is more or less one big ole' album about LB. Not all the songs of course, but you can see the trajectory of their relationship across this album from song to song. And I never was a hard-core "shipper" before but uhm--okay so the stories that were flying around during The Dance era suddenly make a hell of a lot of sense.
And check out the intersting sequencing of those songs on IYD, particularly the placement of "My Heart" on the deluxe album version. No accidents on this album I don't think.
I just can't believe how many references back to older lyrics she's thrown into this group of songs. I hear a new one every time I listen to the album. It's like she's leaving us a trail of crumbs. And it's working. We're certainly doing some pretty rampant speculating.

I know what you mean, especially since she always made the mysterious break with Rupert sound like Jane Eyre to me. Whenever I thought of her saying they could never be together for reasons having nothing to do with love, I'd say to myself, "Oh, he had a crazy wife in the attic, didn't he?" She made that relationship sound very gothic and mansion-y and ill-fated which is very much like WSS.
As for Lindsey, the song doesn't bring him to mind in any specific way, but I do link it to one of his new songs. He sings there's a fire still burning, "in awhile she'll make it rain" or "in a while she'll make it snow." It's so beautiful the way he gives the woman control of even the seasons in his life, the chill in his heart.
There's no fire burning, just a soul crying.

1. Secret Love - Probably not- If this were written recently, I would think it's about LB. The parts about 'can't leave you down here crying' etc., make me think of The Dance. They're trying again, K gets preggers, Stevie says that's it, over, LB at her house begging her to reconsider, both crying and torn over their 'dilemma'.
2. For What It's Worth - Beyond reasonable doubt, confirmed in my mind.
3. In Your Dreams - Beyond reasonable doubt
4. Wide Sargasso Sea - Definitely not- I know this is just a story about a story, but if anyone comes to mind, it's Mick. The obvious; he's an Englishman. "When he first saw her, he fainted to the floor" Mick wanted her from the start, even LB has said this. "We drew a line in the sand"; we can't keep doing this (having the affair) but they did. The rest of the song is angry. That makes me think about Mick dumping Stevie for Sara. I bet she was thinking, NO ONE dumps Stevie Nicks! She probably wanted to burn his house down.
5. New Orleans - Definitely not
6. Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream) - Confirmed
7. Annabel Lee - Definitely not
8. Soldier's Angel - Not about him, but she sure had him on her mind for recording it.
9. Everybody Loves You - Confirmed
10. Ghosts Are Gone - Beyond reasonable doubt
11. You May Be The One - Beyond reasonable doubt
12. Italian Summer - Possibly. Didn't they spend a month or so together in Italy in the last few years? I thought I heard that somewhere....
13. Cheaper Than Free - Probably not
I didn't get the disc with My Heart on it, but I've thought for years it was definitely, and obviously, about LB.

Wouldn't In Your Dreams be about Don Henley - didn't they have a conversation after 9/11 and the TISL tour where she didn't know if she should go on and he encouraged her to give people a distraction for just a little while. Doesn't the description talk about a friend who helped her through all that.

Twins. I agree with you 110% on each song. "For What It's Worth" and "You May Be The One" are near-definite in my mind.
"Got to be a part of a great romance."--That suggests Lindsey to me. I think you're probably right. I'm gonna add that to Possibly. (Cuz of the supposed timeframe, I'm just not sure.)
Genius!
1. Secret Love - Definitely Not when she wrote it. But I do think he's the reason she brought it out of the "vault."
Interesting. The reason this thread matters to those interested in the art of the Mac is that Stevie and Lindsey speak to each other through their music. It's a potential interpretive Rosetta stone. And, as such, it resonates with people's experiences and audience's needs. What they say to each other has Universal appeal, that they are saying it to each other has Universal ramifications.
Anyway, to your point, do you mean to suggest that Stevie chose the song because it resonates with some aspect of her relationship to Lindsey OR to say something to Lindsey about an affair she had? After all, the affair was not sufficient: Can only LB give her salvation?

4. Wide Sargasso Sea -... That makes me think about Mick dumping Stevie for Sara. I bet she was thinking, NO ONE dumps Stevie Nicks! She probably wanted to burn his house down.
Although even Stevie tells it that Mick 'left her' for Sara, I don't think it was as simple as that. There are many things Mick has said over the years that suggest that he was prepared to try and have a 'proper' relationship with her, but she was adamant that they had to keep it under wraps, because LB must never know, because it would destroy the band, blah blah blah. Mick, however, could see that wasn't ever going to change - because no one is ever going to be more important to Stevie than LB - so he cut his losses and copped off with the nearby cute model who was stuck in a stale marriage.
So, not so much that he dumped her as that she made herself emotionally unavailable to such an extent that she drove him away. In fact, I have a friend who has done just this to more than one guy: she is always the victim, even though she clearly sabotages her relationships because she's hung up on an ex.

Wouldn't In Your Dreams be about Don Henley - didn't they have a conversation after 9/11 and the TISL tour where she didn't know if she should go on and he encouraged her to give people a distraction for just a little while. Doesn't the description talk about a friend who helped her through all that.
That makes sense that it is about Don. If it had actually been Don who WB flew out to meet Stevie in Atlanta to try to talk her into continuing the tour. But alas, it was not. One guess as to who it really was that met her in Atlanta.

Thinking about Secret Love now, since she says it was 1975 and that she didn't show the song to FM even though it was their kind of song and that she didn't even keep the song in her "records", I'm thinking her love was a secret she wanted to keep from LB. That clue would be another mark in the Mick book.

more and more i keep thinking i remember stevie saying that angel was about mick. of course, she could have been lying, but i recall her saying something once about how mick made such an entrance when he walked into a room. his very english look, his vest, pocket watch, being so tall and prominent. about the line "she still looks up when he walks in a room" even after their affair.

Stevie said it was written in 1976 earlier, didn't she? I'm just gonna attribute it to that general time frame (75-76) then, and not one specific year.. If Stevie is being honest when she says she doesn't know who it's about, I don't even think Stevie remembers exactly when she wrote it, she forgot about the dang song for 35 years after all.

I know. And Carol Ann Harris said it was about Mick too, didn't she? But LB is in there, too. That whole 'angel' pet name thing crops up with him a lot. And there's something - it might be a video interview? - where she says that that little bit in the Tusk doc, where she and LB are working on the song at the piano, and they look at each other when she sings 'you were very, very goooooood' - she says that look, when she smiles at him, that was the whole of the previous ten years of their relationship right there, in that moment, and it shocked her to see it.

I love that moment on the Tusk video where she is smiling at Lindsey because it just seems so genuine. And I agree with you that moment holds many many years between them. I almost always was the one who got dumped. I would be unhappy and want to leave. A few times even would have a talk with them about it and think we;d end things. they'd not want to. then a little while after, they'd cheat on me and dump me. i'd get furious. i never cheated on them. i tried my best to be there for them and make it work since they said they wanted us togehter. so, even if you are not happy and want it over, it still can hurt. (especially when you had very nice guys ask you out while your boyfriend was out of town and you would say no, and stay loyal, but they would not be). eventually you learn, but there is a lot of pain and saddness built up by then.

I seem to remember an interview years ago where Stevie said something about how most of her songs had a little bit of Lindsey in them. And I understand many songs have a lot of Lindsey in them! My initial reaction to WSS was that it was a retelling of the original story that tied in Rooms on Fire and Rupert in a way. And I know this may be totally off base but I flashed on Chris Isaak re FWIW though I don't believe a romantic involvement or riding around together on a tour bus of his or hers has been confirmed.

She had a bus on the Street Angel tour as well, which is the era she is referring to in the song. Definitely about Lindsey.
This has been bugging me for a while now... I remember an interview, I think it was around 2005-2006, that Stevie referenced to Lindsey by saying something like "you may be the one, but you'll never be the one". The bigger question: does she even need to? Some of her songs leave room for doubt (FWIW, for example), but My Heart screams "this is about LB!" so loud she doesn't really need to say it.;)
The same could be said of at least half of Lindsey's new songs.

According to Stevie, every song has at least one line about Lindsey. That's probably not easy to refute. Ok, maybe some songs.
I think the beginning of IYD is absolutely about someone (WW? CR?) helping her get through the post 9/11 tour, but then there are some lines in that song that seem LBish to me too. The chorus, the part about the tears. I'm sure it's a lot of little things like all her songs tend to be.

If it turns out that every song on IYD is about Lindsey, great. If it would have been that none of the songs are about Lindsey, that would have been great, too.
One of the things about songs is that, whatever the song means to the writer or to the singer, a song can very often take on a different meaning for the listener. Sometimes, that meaning resonates for the listener more strongly than it does for the writer or the singer.
For example, I know what led Stevie to write "Gypsy," but its personal meaning to me in my life to me overpowers what Stevie was writing about from her life. And, in my own little world, I imagine "Fall From Grace" segueing into "Destiny Rules" live because, to my mind, "Destiny Rules" is the sequel to Fall From Grace."
Stevie could very well have Karen Johnston hop on this board first thing tomorrow morning and tell me Stevie herself wants to disabuse me of the notion that "Destiny Rules" is the sequel to "Fall From Grace" and I won't give two ****s in a bucket about it. ;) That's just the way it goes with songs sometimes.

And, of course, sometimes the song ends up being more even to the writer than they were conscious of when they actually wrote it. Sometimes, you don't even have to be a lyricist or poet for things you're going through to creep into your writing. You might not even notice it was tinged with those feelings until two years down the line, when you're away from the situation yourself.
If you're divorcing, in a bad work situation, lost a parent, etc. a lot of the things that you do in the year that those events take place are indirectly about these crises, even if they are not seemingly about them to you at the time.
I could even see Stevie seeing a song being about something different than she thought it was later down the line.
When she says IDWTK is about nothing, I just want to sit her down and tell her what it's about.
