I just heard this new version today and I really like it. The way they redid it by downplaying the versus and letting Stevie sing low suits her voice and the song. The middle part with all the oohhh yeeeahs is really creative. I find I love the new instrumentation to this song.

I have two problems with this song though. I don't think it flows that well after any song and should be an opener because of the way it is done. I also wish there was more verses and less chorus. I think her singing the versus is the best part of the song. This song belongs on TISL and would of given it a boost and I wish TISL was produced like this.

I actually liked the demo but could not listen to it because of her voice. This is soo much better to me.

What do you think about the new version?

I was considering starting a thread on the song today myself! :) I had an initial knee jerk reaction against the song the first few times I listened to it. I've enjoyed the TISL outtake for nearly a decade now, and have personal meaning attached to it. Now that I've listened to it several times, I'm starting to really dig the new version, though. They removed the overly sappy/cheesy aspects of the original, updated the production to make it sound more current, and made the song a cheery celebration of love vs love lost. I like it... the new version really makes me smile vs the original which made me mourn someone from my past :).

I have been listening to this song over and over on repeat. I love this thing. I just think it belongs on TISL. The versus are great.

I feel like this one is missing all of the passion and feeling of the TISL version (I almost said "the original"). The verses have been watered down, melodically...and while I love the guitars, and the fact that they kept much of the music the same, the fact that the verses have been changed rather disappoints me :-(

This part of your post hit it home for me, Louie. I think that's what made Dave's work on this album so great -- he took an average cheese sandwich of an outtake and turned it into a tasty grilled cheese, complete with a delicious tomato soup mandolin part on the side.

I really LIKE this version (on IYD) alot, but I LOVE the outtake version. I don't find it cheesy at all...I do think it (even for, and at, the time) sounds older ... almost like a Rock A Little outtake, more than a TISL one...but never the less I love it. I feel that there is more passion in Stevie's vocal delivery on the early version ... and I miss the words that are left out in the new one...
When I added the IYD album to my iPod, I did delete the original Annabel Lee, but I kept my heart figuring I'd wait and see...I think I'm going to end up keeping both...at least for awhile...

I really can't stand it. I wanted to like it, really I did. It seems looser than the original (just like Stevie's "Free Fallin'" sounds looser than Tom's), maybe even with less of a hook.
For me the worst part is the vocal, which is often (at least by the middle of the song) every bit as rough and nasal as in the TISL version.
The one thing I don't mind is the lyrics. At least on paper, they look like they could have amounted to a decent song.

Well, I finally heard the damn thing.

I'm not sure that it fits on the album, but putting that aside...it's an okay song. They removed the strings-laden verses, which makes it punchier, but I dunno...it kinda seems like it loses something. The TISL version reminds me of someone from my past as well, and this one doesn't. But for me, that's not a good thing. Taking it on its own merits, tho, I'd say that the IYD version is on par with the TISL one. They're different, but not radically so. And I always liked her vocals on My Heart. :)

Honestly, I don't see a big difference between her voice on IYD and her voice on TISL.

Let me start by saying that I am in love with the entire IYD album... That is --- EXCEPT for the addition of My Heart.

I was very excited to go to Barnes & Noble and purchase the album with the extra track, but upon listening to it at home, I feel as if My Heart ruins the flow. I also was a fan of the original version from the TISL era that we all knew, but I am not a huge fan at all of this newer version.

It's difficult to explain why, but this is the best I can do: It's like when I'm inside a Chick Fil-a, and I'm struggling to hear a song being played over the loudspeakers above general the din of the restaurant, and it's a song I think I might like. Then all of the sudden I hear words like "salvation" and "praise" pop out of the song, and I realize that what I'm listening to is christian rock. That's what my heart sounds like to me (the music, obviously, not necessarily the lyrics, although they could easily work also for a retreat at a mid-western mega-church...)

It's nothing I have against Christianity or any religion, it's only that was just my initial feeling about the song, which kind of ruined it for me on IYD. Both the sound of it as well as the themes are off from the rest of the album IMO. So I don't mean to offend anyone who is religious or who may have a predilection for christian rock.

BTW, for those who may not know Chick Fil-a: delicious chicken sandwiches and waffle fries served at a privately owned fast food chain. They are a Christian company and aren't afraid to let you know it, thus the christian rock played constantly inside their restaurants with which I am associating My Heart.

I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND what you meant about My Heart sounding like a Christian rock song..

Well, first off, the entire sound... but then that line, "My heart still stops when I stand before you.." idk I always hear the 'stand before you' line in Christian songs. That's what I've thought since I got the B&N CD!

I don't really know what Christian rock sounds like, so My Heart can't very well remind me of it. :)

As for the song--Gah! Does My Heart really sound like Christian rock? It really might. Man, we're killing one of my favorite songs!

Just got home and listened to it to give it another shot and have to say it really really does. Even the lyrics now sound like it to me. Sorry if I ruined a favorite song for you- wasn't my intention at all. But at least we have the other version which is more epic sounding with a different arrangement of lyrics as well, and I don't think it sounds christian rocky at all.

I like the upgrade, too. However, I feel like there are lyrics missing. The verses seem choppy and I wish she sang "you're not to blame" with more umph!

Agree Agree Agree...I feel Dave's strength is he gave shape and form to stevie's music without all the sentimental sap....I love Stevies stories of ghosts and angels and gypsies are beautiful but Dave brought a masculine energy that gave the music balance....I would have loved to see what Dave could have done with quirky, overly personal songs like Welcome to the room, Sara...he may have tossed them out from the start!

I'm inclined to agree about Cheaper Than Free but there is no way in hell .heaven or purgatory that Stevie Nicks would ever have allowed even the thought of Soldier's Angel being cut from IYD.

Well I finally got my BN copy yesterday as I went to the store to get it. I just listend to it now. Its not bad but I do think its somewhat similar to the TISL recording. I was very happy today to get the Barnes & Noble version of In Your Dreams.
I love what they did with My Heart. I still like the energy of the original version, but the new one is equally good, just different.

I don't understand the comments about it not fitting properly in the the album sequence; something about it disrupting the flow. I think it's a nice fit!

From the first clangy chord, I hated/hate the new version. I've spent years loving the TISL track and I just can't go there with the new version. The lyrics don't make any sense as it is now. I think I really love the TISL because it's such a big way to start the song. She's like, here I am and I am SINGING this song!!!! The new one just kind of starts. When I burned a copy for the car, I replaced the track.

This question is literally the reason I logged in tonight, so thank you for posing it.

I only got to listen to the rollingstone.com stream a few times that day it was posted. Otherwise...I just got the B&N cd today. So, I can't really say that My Heart feels misplaced.

I really have to admit liking the TISL version a little better. I liked the verses better. This one, albeit still great, seems a bit more watered down and doesn't quite have the emotional depth. Still, I can make a new cd and insert the older version in if I care to lol.

This cd is amazing. Her best since Bella Donna. Love it and so glad she did it. Dave did a great job!

It doesn't work for me either. It sounds like a leftover anthem from the '80s, both the IYD version and the TISL version. I love Stevie and most of her songs are wonderful, but this one just doesn't make the cut.

When we 1st heard the old MC song Stevie dusted off and resurrected was My Heart, I was not among the fans cheering. I just felt we already had a completely produced and fleshed out version in the TISL outtake and never thought this song was significance to begin with. But I went along, esp. considering MC mentioned that they went in and made it better.

So after hearing the IYD version for a week now, I'm still underwhelmed. There are parts I like better, and some that fall flat. Overall musically Mike and Dave did make it better, the softer acoustic's throughout esp. on the opening, instead of the ripping chord bang of the TISL version for instance. But the lyrics still leave me cold in spots and are never fully realized (mostly in the verses) AND the song goes on too long in the final repeated chorus.

Though I'm happy to have the bonus song, I feel My Heart was the right choice to drop from the official album. It is the weakest song of the 14 tracks imo. And disrupts the flow of the record somewhat. Still holding out hope we get another bonus song somewhere down the line.

For some reason evertime this comes on the album, I turn up the radio. It doesn't fit on the album. It most definitely should of been on TSIL. I'm not sure why I like it sooo much. I guess it's becuase of the way she sings the choruses. I'm wishing Dave would of produced TISL. I'm sure that album would of been much better had he got his hands on it. This song is not stronger than the other songs on the album, but the way he produced it, just makes it such a good listen. I'm glad it got it dumped from the original album, because it hurts the flow of the album.

I feel the opposite. It's a strong track, and very listenable as you said. I feel it's an interesting "flip side" to a song like "You May Be the One"... the lyrics are kind of at odds with one another... she still loves this man (if that be Lindsey)... "My heart still breaks when you take my hand..." and yet in YMBTO... "You may be the one, but you'll never be the one..." So it's a bittersweet combo, those two songs. I don't know about it's placement as track #8 on the running order, but I think it was silly to leave it off the record. Especially when you've got sleepers like New Orleans. ;)

I'm loving this version of this song, as well (My Heart)...I agree with others opinions that it should be placed elsewhere on the cd.....I really wish that My Heart would have been the lead in to Italian Summer....I love the idea of sequencing the "volume" and pacing of My Heart and then go right into the romance of Italian Summer:thumbsup:

To me My Heart is a movie song. I could see them doing a collage of scened to the opening of it. It's dramatic and spiritual. I hated Stevie's voice on the other version. Dave found a way to make it work on this version. I think the song should of been on TISL. I think had Stevie added My Hear, Thrown Down and If You Ever Did Believe I would of liked the album better.
