I always thought she was singing, "my secret love secretly died" since 1984 but the IYD lyric booklet says it is, "must secret loves secretly die" did anyone else notice this?

I thought she was saying the first one as well... "My secretly love secretly died." Hmpf.

Actually I think the line "must secret loves secretly die" is a great line, especially if its meant as a question.

Yes they are good lyrics and do sort of change the meaning of the song... I was really surprised.... Glad I am not the only one! Check the lyric book and relisten. I wonder if Stevie forgot her original lyrics from 1976? Is that possible?

I do like the actual line better (must secret loves secretly die), I'm just surprised that literally EVERYONE heard the lyrics the same way (There didnt even seem to be a discrepancy) and then we get the album notes and it's flat out wrong..

Whaaat???

Wow- that's wierd.

As I mentioned on another thread, I think there's a typo in the lyric booklet with the Vampire song . It says, "HE sat in a chair for months just staring", when I'm pretty sure it should say "SHE". The scene in the movie that inspired her to write this song in the first place is of Bella sitting in a chair for months, not Edward.

The funny thing is that I thought Stevie sang the line with a bit of an accent : "Muh secret love secretly died." Would make me chuckle every time I heard it.

When I was reading the liner notes and saw that she was actually singing "MUST secret loves secretly die," it really surprised me. I liked the misheard line, but I'm far more fond of the actual lyric. I can't explain why, but it just adds something more to the emotion of the song.

Who knew that a song we've all been listening to for months, would still have something to reveal?

Years, because I thought she was saying "My secret love secretly died" in the demo too.

I hear "my secret love secretly died" as well, and I had two friends who are indifferent to Stevie listen and they heard the same as me.

The actual lyrics are infinitely better than the misheard lyrics - which is really a production issue.

True, true... but when I replied earlier, I was still thinking that was what she sang in the demo. But I just listened to it and, nope, it is indeed "must secret loves secretly die."

She had us all fooled!

It's a sad thing when you write good lyrics and every one of your diehard fans mishears them.

Ditto to all you said. In fact, I'd been kind of chuckling for months about how I thought she was singing, "muh."

I was just happy/vindicated to find that it is: "saved for awhile" rather than "safe for awhile."

not sure we did hear the lyrics wrong on the demo....seems she may have tweaked them a bit for the recording, just like she added a second verse....

I agree-I think it is a slight lyric tweak-one which actually adds a level of profundity to a pretty simple, straight forward song. It seems like something she might have done a la Peacekeeper (didn't they change: Take no prisoners, only kill to: Take no prisoners, break their will?). I.E. a slight change to soften what might seem like a harsh lyric. Maybe?!?

For his solo record, Lindsey changed demo words "twist of fate" to "right place to fade," which was rather mindboggling.

Here, the change in meaning goes from assuming that they've decided to end the relationsip, to still wondering whether its entire duration must be kept in secret. It almost seems like there's hope that it doesn't have to live and die a secret. That maybe there's a chance that they can remove barriers and come out into the open.

Sure, when love starts out in the darkness, it doesn't do well in the light, but with this new lyric she's still wondering if that must be true.

The Secret Love demo I have she most certainly says "Must Secret Loves Secretly Die" no "S" or "D" at all lol..

And on Peacekeeper the lyrics: Take No Prisoners "Only Kill" & "Break Their Will" both feature in it, no?

There are two versions of Peacekeeper. Break their will was considered more media friendly, so when they went on Leno, for instance, they'd say that. Although, "break their will" actually reminds me of torture, continuous torture. So, I don't think of it as a family friendly change.

Ha! CC also had the words wrong!

I alway watch TV with cc on because you catch so much, and while Stevie was singing Secret Love on Dancing With the Stars it said "My secret love secretly died."

In Moonlight I've been singing: She runs with the ones she can't keep up with. It's so strange. Her friends are desperate to stop her.

Was this resolved?

I (still) don't have my physical copy of the album, but I notice the lyrics provided on most of those lyrics web sites has "They drop, too forceful, frozen". Was this what you meant by the true lyric caterwench?

Because I gotta say that is seriously not right. I can't even make it out, let alone the fact that it doesn't fit with my (admittedly limited) understanding of the Twilight thing.

Am I the only one who snickers (occasionally) when I hear "I can't go be in that room alone" as "I can't go pee in that room alone?" I mean, codependent much?

Oh...I've never heard/seen it as "forceful." I've always heard "forest floor," which is what the liner notes say.

Of course it is, I just didn't want any good ledgie running around awkwardly trying to squeeze 'too forceful' in there. They'd look ridiculous.

Come to think of it, caterwench was probably being sarcastic considering it's so patently stupid.

And no peeing for me, but I struggle with 'we watched the cars fly by' in FWIW. I have visions of Stevie and her forbidden love being plonked in the middle of an episode of The Jetsons.

Even if the cars don't have wings, why are Stevie and her Love watching them fly? If they're on the road too, why are they driving slower than everyone else? That would have to be annoying for the other drivers. Guess they're so involved in their forbidden romance that they can't even keep their eyes on the road.

Or are they looking at the view from a freeway overpass? Is that their romantic hang out? Reminds me of a Jack Finney story called the Night People where 2 couples used to go out and lay in the freeway for kicks.

I had a friend back in Pittsburgh who had an apartment with a really nice second story balcony/deck thingy. I don't know what you call it. It was surrounded by trees and the apartment complex was down a small hill next to a busy street. I remember sitting on it one summer evening with some friends having a really deep conversation while the cars sped by on the road above us. It was one of those nights that live in your memory as long as you live. And every time I hear that part in FWIW I think about that. So I can totally relate to that feeling.

Well not if u play your cards right Ms. Nicks!

I often wonder HOW she was asking this question. Was she being sarcastic? Was she reflecting on the past and questioning if that relationship truly neede to end or could they have worked it out?

Anyone else ever question this?

tabruns

I take the line "must secret loves secretly die?" as a lamentation that because it was a secret love in the first place, when the relationship ends you can't talk to your friends and family about it. As she sings in the song "we've already passed it", meaning that it's already past the place where the relationship could work out: It's for sure not going to. So now she's lamenting must this die secretly with no one but her knowing about what happened.
