interesting that her newest album will released ten years after september 11 2001 and now Usama's death a decade later..she often speaks of how difficult it was to tour during those sad days...now a bit of a celebration

I have to agree with you. While the world is certainly a better place without this evil, evil man, you have to wonder how those loyal to him will respond, or who will take his place as head of that organisation.
I hate to be a Debbie-Downer, I really do, but I don't think it's a laughing matter. While his death is, obviously, going to make many people happy, I don't think it's the end of everything. :(

My brother and dad just ran into my room and we joined in singing "America! F*** YEAH!" à la Team America.
We were excited and making light of it, but on reflection I think Curtis is right: it's not really a laughing matter and we probably are in more danger right now--especially being in New York.

There's a crowd of people outside the White House singing the national anthem. after everything we've been through in the last ten years I think the country needs to collectively exhale. And good riddance to bad rubbish. I don't feel happy, in fact I feel more moved to tears. But if we are attacked again then it's all for naught. It's going to take a while to process this information. That one event changed the lives of every single one of us. I can only imagine that it must have felt like this when Germany fell in the second world war and Hitler committed suicide. I'm sure people wondered if there was going to be more. We'll have to wait and see what the president says. In the coming days we'll know much, much more.

This is stupid. She actually has a point about TISL. It went Gold with a month after release. The sales slowed down significantly after that, which is debatable as to the 9/11 connection, but its true that her tour was thrown off significantly and commerce DID slow down a lot shortly after 9/11. I think she has a point.

I hope so. And I hope that this brings some closure for all of us (I think we can assume that everyone was affected in some way), and especially for the families of those who died on 9/11 and since then.
But I can't help but be skeptical that this really changes things. I don't think we're any safer for it, and I don't think the world is safer for democracy, really. The forces that led to 9/11 are still very much alive, and there's not a real fix for that on the horizon.
Still, I can't help but be grateful that we won't approach the 10th anniversary with the knowledge that he's still out there.

You're 100% right about this. We're not more safe because Bin Laden is dead. This doesn't mean the world reverts back to the way it was on September 10, 2001, either. But this IS a definitive moment. The man who masterminded the killing of 3,000 Americans (and subsequently thousands of others in the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan) is now dead. This can be the unity event we've all been hoping for. We finally have peace of mind that the man who assaulted & forever changed our country has been brought to justice. Now we can hopefully move on with our lives and begin focusing on the many other big issues that challenge us. No, the war on terrorism isn't over. It probably never will be. But the hunt for Bin Laden finally is.

Says a lot about our society and priorities, doesn't it? Not to mention gastric bypass was trending more than gas prices... which are hitting $4/gallon across the US, threatening to stall our very tepid economic recovery.
And Paris Hilton and Katie Holmes are trending more than Mother's Day. Wow. Another indication of our priorities.
And a pop album is bigger news than the most reviled villain in the world being killed after a 10 year hunt. Am I the only one who finds this extremely disturbing? :distress:

These questions come up every time "trending" does.
"What are our priorities?" "Why does everyone care so much about third nipples?" "Is 'Miley Cyrus toe ring' really more important that a presidential primary?" etc.
And listen: I get it. I definitely thought it was weird that Stevie was trending higher than Bin Laden. But troubling as the implication may be, I don't think we need to fret for our national character, or anything. We're looking a comparatively small sliver of the population (Do you yahoo? I don't!). I'm pretty sure that if you actually polled Americans, 99.99% would consider the death of Bin Laden to be more important. And just because people are looking up Katie Holmes more often than Mother's Day doesn't necessarily mean they consider her more important.
I mean, I love my mother--she's very possibly my favorite human. But I can't say I've felt the need to look up Mother's Day on a search engine lately. And I probably have looked up some random s***. Doesn't mean I consider "sand swallow nesting" more important. In fact, it really doesn't mean anything at all.
Maybe Katie Holmes is just all kinds of fun to yahoo?:p
Anyway, just my opinion.

His death most probably will add fuel to their fire and just incite further hatred towards those they fight against. Having said that, I suppose even without them, in the world as it stands today there's always a reason to be afraid.

I agree with this also.
I will never agree with all our military does, but after hearing Soldier's Angel and having a few buddies who have been there and back...I agree. I have no idea what this means. And no one walks away from this battle, though a few of my buddies have.
The battle rages on and I know not who is righteous and who is not.
But this is a victory.
I only wish I knew how much the sacrifice meant. And what it has been for. For a few friends of mine never returned and I still stand here wondering why I lost them, and what that means. I hope they died for the right thing. I may never know. I am glad this horrible man is gone. I only wonder if the loss of my buddies makes it worth it. Personally I cannot measure the loss. Good men. Sweet and honest men who committed themselves for a larger cause. In the big picture I may never know. None of my buddies made it to Walter Reed or got a Stevie Ipod. They were lost in the desert. I hope their loss makes a difference as their loss to me meant the world.
The World. To Me.
I pray it was worth it.

i deal w/ our troops on a daily basis~ i run a daycare for military babies, i live a mile from SAC offutt air force base~ thankfully everyone of my parents & friends who have served over there have come home alive & in one piece~ some of them have friends & comrades that weren't so lucky~ we had a rash of soldier's funeral here this past two weeks, a whole group hit by an IED~ was so sad seeing the bodies returned & the services held for them~
every time i hear of yet another soldiers death i can't help but weep for them, i want them home~

So the consipracy theorists already started this morning - saying he's not dead since they didn't give the media a photo of his corpse.
As far as I know, he was only identified by his face. No one is talking if DNA was really obtained or not. He was quickly buried. Shady.

I heard dna was obtained & matched to a sister's dna that the U.S. had. Then he was "buried at sea."

You're right. They confirmed it about an hour ago.

I like that he was buried at sea so that no place could become a shrine to this monster. I wonder if it was recorded or documented in some way. You are essentially throwing away the symbol of pure evil and you're just throwing him in the sea?!

I kinda think they should've just blasted him out into space. You know, like what happens to your poo and pee when using the toilet on an airplane. FAWOOOSH!

I like the idea of his body burning up in reentry into the atmosphere. But then having that evil rain down upon the globe? *shudder* :( I like the idea of his body rotting and turning into crab food better.

Why don't they just get Superman to fly his body into the sun?

Wow, so apparently bin Laden used one of his wives as a human shield when the bullets started flying:

First of all.. I must say I'm glad he finally was shot down, though my mood was never in a "celebrate" status.
however... This article is interesting.
What is fair, right, justifiable... not necessarily is within the legal..
Wether is an act of war or not is a key legal circumstances because an armed combatant in the context of a war can be legally shot. Not the suspect or convicted of a crime, which must be brought to justice, trial.

I coldn't find this BBC page in english, but it's exactly what I was afraid of. This attitude will generate nothing but more hate, violence, and murders from the extremists.
Bin Laden death on sale! Less than 3 hours after the President announcement, merchandise is available: T-shirts, mugs, hats, stickers, bags:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mundo/noticias/2011/05/110502_obama_muerte_ventas_marketing_jmp.shtml
I can't imagine myself drinking my coffee in a mug with this topic. It's completely understandable that the american people may see this new with.. joy, or satisfaction. But IMHO it should be a bit more sober, discret.

Why in the hell did they bury him already? I've heard the excuse that he's supposed to be buried within 24 hrs due to some tradition... what the--? So what proof is there that he is in fact dead, and that it is Bin Laden that they've killed? :distress:

they matched his dna w/ brain tissue they had from his sister~
they also said burial at sea was because he had to be buried 24 hours after death & they didn't want a grave for people to go to & no country wanted his body~

So there's no real proof that it was him, then? I mean, that's what that says to me.
Unless- they use his brain tissue to clone a new version of his head! Of course... without the beard people might not recognize him... Hmm...

It will be like the Anastasia mistery. They compared an Anna Anderson tissue with a relative but when Anna was already dead (the tissue was kept in a hospital from an old surgery.. I never knew hospitals keeps tissue from patients:confused:). The analysis said Annas was not Annastasia. But who knows? In this case it's a far more serious dilemma
It's true about the islamic tradition of burying within 24 hr, but why they respected that, and not other factors in this episode?? Hummm....
Well, I'm glad he's dead & they were just a little too nice about the way they disposed of his body, JMO. The people on 9/11 didn't get a proper burial.
As far as celebrating his death, well, not so fast. You are always going to have some nut job ready to replace him. Nothing will be the same again & it (terrorism) will never end.

That could very well be the truth... especially since the world didn't see his body.

Who knows? If nobody saw his body, he may have been dead for years, or maybe he's alive living in Borneo. It's like saying Adolf Hitler died in Argentina in 1964. These doubts could produce speculation for years.
I like your phrase between quotes!

I'm not normally one for Bible quotes, but the first part of this sums up my feelings about this. Yes, he was a hideous scumbag and undoubtedly deserves what he's received, but to actively celebrate anybody's death is, in my eyes, a vile reaction.
Also, as many have said, my first reaction was 'How can people genuinely believe this is the end of terrorism and everything's going to be alright now?'
The whole thing makes me horribly uneasy.

Depends on the terrorist group organization. In this case I'm afraid they are well organized, enough to continue their activities.
Peru suffered of terrorism for more than 10 years, since the early 80s. Unlike the US, we suffered attacks continuosly within our country. They were peruvians living in Peru, not foreign people visiting our country sometimes. Car bombs, black outs, murders, etc..
The leader, Abimael Guzman, was responsible for 30,000 deaths (I guess this number is more than Bin Laden's). He was captured in 1992. He was sentenced for life imprisonment (still alive). Well Shining Path didn't dissapear but it is almost. It has been reduced to its minimal expresion and we now live in peace and joy. Tourism increased a lot, cities have been modernized, we grow in all aspects, we even have good (economic) years during the 2008-2009 international crisis (one of the few countries with economical growth in the region).
But that was Shining Path. I guess Al Qaeda is stronger and better organized.
