I love this song!!
I cannot stop singing it, and thinking about it.

Also, has anyone else noticed her little, twangy note on the word "ocean"?

Anyone else having this song run through their head about a thousand times a day?

No, I didn't notice the "ocean" thing. I'll have to listen. The album did reinforce the fact that Stevie cannot pronounce her "r".

Bwavery.

I really wonder why she sings it as "was to make love" using the infinitive form of the verb. I love it, but it's so peculiar

I was just about to post a thread saying the SAME THINGS!! This song will not exit my head. Night or day. And that's fine by me. It kicks ARSE! It's gotta be one of the ballsiest songs she's written... and she did so in her 60s! I love it when Stevie is sassy... and when she talks about racy things. It just makes me happy that she hasn't really mellowed personally (even thought she may no longer be wild onstage). This song is a reminder why I love Stevie. It's like her modern day No Spoken Word or something :).

AMEN! My cousin and I had this conversation, on our way to the movies tonight.
Stevie is so outspoken in this song. I love the tone of her voice in the verses.
Stevie Nicks' spirit has not mellowed one bit, and I am very, very happy about that!!

I love it! It's real and sensual and she can get away with it. She's in her 60's, she's lived and learn. This type of honesty is what I really appreciate about this album.
Preach it Stevie!

That struck me as rather odd too...

Apparently it's grammatically correct, though according to Carrie721:

it is grammatically correct. since "was" is a linking verb, it joins the subject of the sentence ("thing") with the complement ("to make love."). if the line read "the only thing that they did together was make love," it would be incorrect because "make love" is not a noun or adjective. you cannot describe a noun with a verb. in this case, "to make love" is an infinitive, which functions as a noun in this sentence. stevie has bent or broken other grammar rules in the past, but she is on point in this example

Interesting. I'll admit that everything I ever learned about English grammar I learned in French class, so I'm clearly not the expert on such technicalities as that, but her explanation certainly makes sense. I do know that the proper way that Carrie has pointed out still simply *sounds* odd to, even if it is the correct wording.

This will sound funny...but this is how I wish Lindsey's "Come" had sounded. :sorry::lol:
If only she had been willing to sing on it.

musically, i prefer it to "the only thing that they did together ... was make love" because it sounds more percussive. but it does sound stilted, i agree.

I've gotta say, I do completely adore this song. I remember the VERY FIRST time hearing the sizzle reel, I was INSTANTLY attracted to this song, figuring it was more than likely going to be a fave from the album. And it is!! The line that has really stuck with me is "and even though they were so in love, they drew a line in the sand, just because~" but yes, I do love the love making line as well!!! :)

This was definitely the standout song on the sizzle reel for me, though the full version was completely different to how I imagined it! It's all those things you've already said: ballsy and sexy, badass and dripping with attitude and confidence. It's powerful in a sinister kind of way, very much like Come.

And those drums just won't get out of my head. The drumming, Doctor, the constant ... drumming. :p

I think Wide Sargasso Sea is about Mick Fleetwood.

I think Wide Sargasso Sea is about Mick Fleetwood.

I hadn't thought about that. I just took it literally, assuming it to be about the novel, but I can see how it could have a duality in its meaning.

I think all of Stevie's songs are really about her, ultimately. Yes, she was inspired by the book/movie, but probably wouldn't have written a song about if it didn't remind her of one of her own relationships. She's basically said this about Moonlight.

And I absolutely thought about Mick when I read the lyrics. That song is drenched in Mick vibes, IMO.

That line vaguely reminds me of Life in the Fast Lane.. "they had one thing in common, they were
good in bed."

:xoxo: I love your grasp of grammar! Yes, also I found that line very peculiar. How could it be better said?

I used to find Stevie's writing to be a little frustrating because she sometimes composes words/phrases in such odd ways. But now I am more forgiving, accepting that her weird quirks are uniquely hers. I just wish she would use more descriptive words in certain places, For example, she uses the generic word "go" in some of her lyrics, when a another verb would add a little more impact/color.

Citing a line from No Questions Asked, she says "And you miss those arms that used to go around you." I always thought that was kind of weak, where as "wrap around you" or some other word of that nature would have given the line a little more "umph!"

completely and totally agree. i pointed this out the other day while listening with a non-stevie fan.

i think FWIW is about mick. of course i haven't read any interviews about who it's about, so idk idk.

Yes...I mentioned the "make love" line a few months ago. This song wasn't a favorite of mine when I first heard the record but I was struck by her very bold lyrics.

Stevie is almost always grammatically correct in her lyrics, never using "ain't" or double negatives and so on. She has incorrectly substituted "lay' for "lie,' though.

"drownding"
"which set of doors are mine"
"should've turned away and ran"
"be careful who you please"
"to never have loved at all"
etc.
I love her music/lyrics as much as anyone, but not for grammar/syntax. But I'm fine with suspending the rules for her. :)

For the record, the "to make love" in WSS doesn't seem odd to me at all. But if there's a sex scene with her in the WSS video, THAT will shock me.

Those are pretty minor slips of syntax compared to the stuff that permeates pop music generally ... ain't no way Stevie fits with the norm.

Maybe it's an FM thing? Some of Lindsey's English is well dodgy, too. Even Christine gave us 'It would be different and you know it will' (although you can just about make a case for that one making a sort of sense). Bob Welch, of course, has to answer for:

Now it's not a meaningless question
To ask if they've been and gone
I remember a talk about North
Carolina and a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any man's hand ever made that land
Then I think it would've showed

It all makes the copy editor in me just itch....
