I had to laugh when I heard the way she pronounced it! Its just we are so used to how we hear it and say it that it sounds funny when someone says New Orleeenz. I was disappointed in the song; it could have gone so much deeper considering all we went through with the storm. I have been saying she should have consulted me! ;)

She probably pronounced it that way because it rolls of the tongue better when you sing it... at it sounds more dramatic? We all know how Stevie loves her drama. ;)
I too wish the song had more lyrical depth. After all her grand proclamations we've heard for years about this tune, the lyrics definitely don't live up to the hype. Musically, it's catchy, though. It's interesting, I expected this song to be something special, and for Soldier's Angel to be absolutely an abomination. It turned out quite the opposite!

I like it a lot lyrically. She captures the spirit of New Orleans. It's not a sad song. More of a hopeful song. I really like Soldier's Angel too. That song has unique perspective and musically adds more depth to the album.

I really like this more than I thought I would. From her descriptions of wanting to get a certain New Orleans sound with the right producer, I was worried she would try to have horns or something.
As for pronunciation, she's too busy trying the English accent in "Everybody Loves You" to try to sound southern in this one. And imagine if she threw in a cajun accent.

For some reason I'm really loving this song. It has made me want to visit New Orleans more than ever, and I actually very much want to start reading some Ann Rice- which I never have before. Suggestions?
BTW, For whatever reason I didn't realize we had any New Orleans guys on here!!!

Interview with the Vampire is her first book in the vampire series so you should definitely start there.
The Witching Hour is a huge book about witches but it was set in New Orleans and it stands fairly outside the vampires sequence so you could start with this one as well.
Blackwood Farm is a later book in the vampire series but it doesn't rely so heavily on the built-up mythology of previous books, and its also very New Orleans-area based (and also very good).

I wonder if Stevie realizes that Anne Rice moved out of New Orleans a became a born again christian. I personally wish Anne would get back to her old ways and write some more horror novels. There is nobody better.

I'm a firm believer in memorials rather than funerals. When I gather with friends to remember a lost loved one I would much rather celebrate their life than mourn their death, and in a way that's how I see this song. I have never been to New Orleans and when Katrina hit, after my sadness for the people and worry about their safety, I was very saddened that I had never seen it. The news reports made it sound like it would never be the same and I was so saddened that I had missed it. But this song is a reminder of how amazing it is and the spirit of the people have been restoring it's former glory. I think it's a very sweet song and a loving tribute to such a beautiful place.

I'm glad that the song wasn't some maudlin thing about people drowning and looting and being stuck in the Superdome. As it is, it struck just the right chord.
About Anne Rice...I don't think "born again" is the right term. That implies a very conservative, evangelical brand of Christianity, and that isn't what Rice became involved in. I think she just became more active in her Catholicism. But I read somewhere that she had issues with their stance on homosexuality because of her son, and is no longer active.

Thanks for clarifying I've read some of her books years ago but did not follow her personal life much.It makes sense from her writings that she is Catholic..alot of practicing Catholics are pretty accepting of gays actually the church's stance is that being homosexually inclined is not intrinsically a sin just acting on it is..same for heteros if they are unmarried quite different from the almost universally homophobic" born agains"But back on topic I like "New Orleans " alot even her frank imitation of Sheryl Crows' phasing and vocal inflections on parts of the song are cute...kind of things coming full circle.

Have you missed the blitz of media attention this year since Anne has renounced Christianity, but not her faith in God? If you're on her facebook page, she rails against the Catholic church hardcore daily regarding the priest molestation scandal, the church's homophobic stance, the church's stronghold in the secular world including politics and corporations, etc.

Yeah, I remember reading about that - didn't know there was a media blitz about it, but maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention. My brief dalliance with Catholicism didn't last long either.

The Witching Hour sounds legit- would love to read something set in New Orleans!
I read the Witching Hour series (Witching Hour, Lasher, & Taltos) several times a year and have for over a decade. The books are huge, expansive, overwhelming, rambling, and INCREDIBLE! Considering when they were originally written (late '80s), the taboo subject matter discussed within the books is pretty shocking. Anne Rice has had a HUGE effect on me through these books. Through discussing the most dark, hidden, shameful aspects of humanity I think she helps people understand why others act the way they do, and why we think the way we think. You'll pick up/learn something new every single time you read the books, and I've read them dozens of times. If you like very dark, gothic subject matter set in lush settings (New Orleans mainly), you'll LOVE the Witching Hour series.

I'm not sure how accurate this is. Yes she did turn very religious for awhile after her husband died, but I wouldn't call that "born again Christian" (which I equate with Baptists or the hard-right religionistas)...she more just went back to the Catholic church, which she has now left again.

The Witching Hour series got better with each book. They are excellent. Unlike the first three books of the Vampire series, they are not self contained. You have to read the whole series. I was really disappointed that Anne did not write a follow up to the Mummy. That book was GREAT. My favorite books from her are Lestat and Interview With A Vampire. Anne lost her way though, especially after she turned Christian again. I'm not a huge fan of her Angel series or the last Vampire books.
I like Anne Rice and Stevie Nicks because they do the same thing: they take you into a whole new world. I always said Stevie was the Anne Rice of rock n roll.

Coming back to the Catholic church in no way equates being 'born again"that is purely an evangelical protestant conceit. All Ican say is thank God and the Blessed Virgin that Stevie has never been 'born again" that would have truly destroyed her art.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Emmylou Harris's new cd, which came out this week, features a song called "New Orleans" as well. It's track #5 & it's also about surviving Katrina. Doesn't surprise me, cuz Emmylou has a long history of Louisiana songs appearing on her albums (Leaving Louisiana, Crescent City, etc). But I just found it kind of interesting cuz I've always considered her to be the country version of Stevie & follow her career too, just not as closely as I do with Stevie. But, for them both to release new albums a week apart, with a song of the same name at almost the exact same place on their cd's, dealing with the exact same subject matter, it's really kinda freaky, but cool all the same.
