People know that stevie has to compete with people who are almost 40 years youonger, she is going to have a hard enough time selling this album eventhough it truly deserves to be multi-platinum.

the rolling stone stream will go down, but this stuff stays up and will affect sales

Honestly everyone album leaks nowdays. I'll probably get yelled at, but it's the simple truth. To say that this is going to lose her album sales is to say that every artist with music on Youtube (which is pretty much every artists) is losing a huge amount of sales.

I mean, is it perferable? No. But it's pointless to get this upset imo. But maybe that's just me.

Me too. I like watching everything on youtube, but this is really not the right time. It could hurt her sales, which could hurt her ego, which could make her stop recording. I mean, we were waiting 10 years for a new album, and I am sure that the low sales of TISL and SYW had much to do with it. She is almost 63. She is not going to be able to do this much longer. Fans are buying multiple copies of IYD, and somebody who obviously is a fan is doing the opposite.

Well the problem wasn't that they didn't sell well, the problem is that she was tired from touring and her label told her it was pointless right? I remember her saying if she hadn't been so tired she would have fought back harder.

And honestly....most of her fans have bought multiple copies. There's nothing saying that this person hasn't either right? And also, exposure on Youtube could be good for getting people who don't know Stevie to listen to this album, which could equal new fans and more sales for Stevie. It could be a good thing.

As much as I disagree with posting it up because the album has not been released yet, he and the other posts of the songs to YouTube are not posting download links for the songs.

So, in that case, they are only in violation of posting copyrighted material and not for making it available for illegal download.

Yes, please. Let's halt Stevie's publicity. That's the way to get album sales!

People don't buy records anymore without sampling them first. An album needs to make an impression for my generation to buy it. Let the audience hear the music, trust the music, and trust that if it's good enough, they'll want to support it.

it's way too premature for any youtube, the song is streaming on RS website, the quality if bad, let them hear it on RS

What youtube is good for, though, is for people who wouldn't KNOW to seek out Rolling Stone. Say somebody is listening to Edge of Seventeen (or Landslide, if we're talking Glee generation) and they see an IYD song promoted on their sidebar. They're going to click it. And maybe they'll fall in love. I trust the quality of these songs enough to think they'll be intrigued. And then they're going to google the "In Your Dreams" that they see in the comments. And then they're going to see that it comes out May 3rd. And then they're going to tell themselves to remember to get it on Itunes.

I mean, really, who would expend the effort and potential for viruses to download the songs of youtube? Hardcore fans. We already have pre-orders. Who cares if we download? We're not a consideration here. Again, this is about winning over the people who don't already have pre-orders, and I guarantee you, those people aren't converting sh*tty youtube versions.

It would bother me a lot more if the versions on YouTube were crystal clear versions cut right from the disc. It's SO easy to download files off of YouTube what with the tons of software downloads and websites out there, unfortunately for so many people who do nothing but download, a ripped song off of YouTube is good enough and they won't go out and buy the actual CD. It's great being able to sample songs because of so many sites that provide that feature, I'm just not a huge fan of freely downloading everything (as much as I can help it, because some stuff you just can't find anymore!) The artists deserve to reap as many benefits as they can from what they put out. Even if they don't always 'need it' in a financial sense, still......

It just all depends on how you look at it really, of course in a sense of promotion and getting her material out there and known to a wider audience it's great. As others have mentioned, the best thing you could hope for is that after sampling the music, casual fans will want to actually go out and support her. In this day & age it's completely unavoidable so there's no use trying to fight it all.

Some people might disapprove of this and I'm sorry, but honestly, I did record all the songs off of the Rolling Stone website yesterday so I could put them on my iPod. However, I'm not posting them anywhere, I'm not sharing them with anyone, and it's not going to be a loss of any sales because I've already pre-ordered a copy and I plan on buying a couple more copies as gifts for family members and a couple friends. I only recorded them because I totally fell in love with them and wanted to be able to listen to them anywhere. I was impatient. I'll most likely end up deleting them off my iPod on the 3rd and putting the better quality CD rips on there.
I do think it's a crappy deal though when people put the songs on YouTube before the album's released (yeah, it happens all the time, but that's no excuse). It doesn't bug me as much if they do it after the release, because then people have had the chance to buy the album. If they do it before though, they can just download them from YouTube and convert them to just audio, and that way they don't have to spend any money purchasing the album when it comes out. It really could hurt album sales and that sucks. In Your Dreams is amazing and it should sell a bajillion copies. Stevie deserves it.
The part that really bugs me is that the people who are putting them on YouTube (there are several copies of each song up by now) seem to be big fans. They of all people should realize how important it is that the album sells, and how much it would hurt Stevie if they knew what they were doing (I'm assuming she wouldn't be too pleased). Some fans.
The whole thing is BS if you ask me.
Just my two cents.

I think it's good that RS put it on their website. They knew the album would somehow be leaked in Europe because they got it on the 28th. Plus, there are a lot of people who were turned off by Stevie's previous album. They want them to have a chance to listen to it and hear how great it sounds and then take it down from their website. They'll have to buy it to keep listening to it.

The only way that would change is if people post it on youtube permanently, which they are trying to do. You can put it on your ipod from RS, but I'm sure the quality is not all that great and after hearing the album, a person would want it in the best quality possible. They would buy it.

Well the problem wasn't that they didn't sell well, the problem is that she was tired from touring and her label told her it was pointless right? I remember her saying if she hadn't been so tired she would have fought back harder.

so she was too tired to fight back yet wasn't too tired to record another album? This just doesn't make any sense. I think it was a combination. She was probably really tired from touring and wanted/needed a little break plus she was advised that making a cd at that time was not in her best interest. So her decision not to make a another cd in 2005 was a probably a combination of things. I don't buy that she didn't have some say in the matter.

I did the same. I'm getting the CD and I'm not going to share the files anywhere so I don't see a problem with it really.

I can't find the quote but she says something along the lines of the label telling her that it didn't matter because everyone would just download the album and not buy it. So she took their word instead of fighting it more because she was tired than anything.

But I mean, honestly Stevie does need to accept that she won't sell as much as she used to no matter what she does. Music has become much more diverse than when you had to go down to the record store and choose between 3 cds.

Her manager told her it would sale and there was no point to it. The record business was in terrible shape.
