I know some posters will think this thread is premature, but many of us have listened to the songs many times by now. Obviously this is based on 1st (or 1st-day) impressions.

Here's my list, beginning with the best:

Moonlight
New Orleans
Italian Summer
Wide Sargasso Sea
For What It’s Worth
Secret Love
In Your Dreams
You May Be the One
Everybody Loves You
Ghosts Are Gone
Soldier’s Angel
Cheaper Than Free
Annabel Lee

Moonlight
Italian Summer
For what it's worth
Soldier's Angel
Wide Sargasso Sea
Everybody Loves You
You may be the one
In your dreams
Ghosts are Gone
Secret Love
Annabel Lee
New Orleans
Cheaper than Free.

For now...
But really, they are all fantastic, to the point that i feel bad for ranking Annabel Lee 11th...

That's really hard to do with an album like this. Every song is really good and it depends on my moods. Nothing seems to obvious.

Except for Everybody Loves You ;).
Yes, but you're right, now i feel guilty for ranking them.

I can't really do this yet because I've not lived with the album for long enough. The only thing I do know is that it's incredibly consistent and I love it. That said, Cheaper Than Free is my least favourite and I don't see that changing at all.

For What It’s Worth, I agree that this is difficult to complete. Try it anyway; You May Be the One to get it right. And Stevie will put down her guitar & hand you a red rose. But if you don’t try, she may burn someone's house down.

I'm not nuts about the melody, but really it's the vocal that puts this at the bottom for me. It's not terrible compared to what we've heard on some songs on her other recent albums. But the other songs on this album just don't sound as strained/flat to me.

I really like it but it goes on a little too long, but that's just me. Her vocal is 10x better than on the demo

So far. Based on a few listens of each song via Rolling Stone;

1) Ghosts Are Gone.
2) Everybody Loves You
3) Moonlight
4) New Orleans
5)Annabell Lee
6) Soldier's Angel
7) In Your Dreams
8) For What It's Worth
9) Italian Summer
10) Wide Sargasso Sea
11) You May Be The One
12) Secret Love
13) Cheaper Than Free

This list was changing all the time whilst posting it. There's very little between them, although Secret Love and CTF are definitely the two weakest songs; but they're still really excellent songs. All in all, a fantastic album from Stevie. I can see my favourites changing all the time from this one

Firstly, I've on fully listened to the album twice and so this is most certainly subject to change ~

Secondly, it's really only based musically and on my initial connection to the songs as i haven't really had time to properly digest the lyrics; (When i do that's when this'll prob change)!

Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream)
Italian Summer
Wide Sargasso Sea
For What It’s Worth
New Orleans
You May Be the One
Annabel Lee
Ghosts Are Gone
In Your Dreams
Secret Love
Everybody Loves You
Soldier’s Angel
Cheaper Than Free

Overall a superb album, on par with Bella Donna (my personal fav.).
Not a bad song on it;
(Note: While Cheaper than Free is last I still think it's a nice closer in the context of the album; Soldiers Angel is second last because whilst I like Lindsey's guitar, the pounding drums and their harmonies together, I find it a little self-indulgent at points).

At this moment Top 5

2. Ghosts Are Gone
3. Wide Sargasso Sea
4. In Your Dreams
5. Italian Summer

I've listened enough times to know the ones I like the very best, and I doubt it will change much:

For What It's Worth
In Your Dreams
Moonlight
Secret Love
The Ghosts Are Gone
You May Be The One

The rest are good, but these are my favs. I'd say that the first 2 probably rank in my Top 10 of all Stevie songs.

Teir 2
New Orleans
Wide Sargasso Sea
In Your Dreams
Italian Summer
You May Be The One

Tier 3
Cheaper Than Free
Ghosts Are Gone
Secret Love

PROPOSAL: If you took the top 5 below and combined them with 6 or 7 new Lindsey tracks (bootlegs) that we've heard, you'd have the best ablum of the year. Stevie coulda released a fine, compact, very Stevie solo ablum with the bottom 8 (or 9 with that bonus track).

After Three Listens: IYD Ranked (w/ initial responses)

Tier 1 - Contenders for the Pantheon
1. Moonlight (A Vampire's Tale) - I feel like this is the song that Stevie has been building toward in her solo career. Its tempo/style shifts along with its epic length and its haunted harmonies finally bust beyond all those boundaries her songwriting--structure and storytelling--always pushes but in a way that might put her Lady In The Mountain saga in its place in our popular lore along with Twilight. It is the Mac/Stevie magic in one song--fulfilling and commenting on the process by which a network of private symbols is put the use of popular lore.
2. Annabel Lee - God Bless Mick Fleetwood (that MUST be him on this song!). The most soaring, shimmering track on the album. The phrasing combined with Poe's?Stevie's poetry is overwhelming romantic. Also it flirts with a Sapphic subtext that seems to pop up throughout this album--making it an intriguing personal confession that reminds me of MJ's Dangerous album.

Tier 2 - We R Worthy
3. Everybody Loves You
4. You May Be the One
5. Soldier's Angel

Tier 3 - Hat's Off!
6. In Your Dreams
7. Italian Summer
8. Wide Sargasso Sea - fumidesigns' enthusiasm is infectious!
9. For What It's Worth
10. New Orleans

Tier 4 - Skippable :sorry:
11. Cheaper Than Free
12. Secret Love
13. Ghosts Are Gone

I love every song its hard to rank my it but I would give it 5 Stars out of 5 definetly one of her best if not her best work solo. In Your Dreams is sure Magic,Fire and Blood from the Queen of Rock n Roll and chiffon Goddess Stevie Nicks. :wavey::woohoo::thumbsup::D

This sums up Annabel Lee perfectly..I'm not getting how it is rating so low with alot of fans.Stevie IMO has had some Sapphic subtext going on since way back.

Thank you. Just an initial reaction. I want to delve deeper into its imagery, but its allure is undeniable. Also, Stevie's Sapphic subtext is a subject that I would love to know more about. I guess for some reason this song seemed to make other moments (Secret Love!) jump out at me.

I've listened to In Your Dreams (once), Soldier's Angel (once), Moonlight, Wide Sargasso Sea and Italian Summer (over and over and over). And of course, Cheaper Than Free and Secret Love

I'd put them in this order today:

Moonlight
Italian Summer
Secret Love
Wide Sargasso Sea
Cheaper Than Free
In Your Dreams (I really can't remember what it sounded like)
Soldier's Angel (Didn't like this. The sentiment is nice, but the word 'soldier' is repeated too often for my liking and the lyrics seemed, I don't know, clunky.)

Surprised to see Annabel Lee so far down on the lists. I really love the emotive-ness (a word?) of the chorus... "And the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams" ... I love her voice on that part.

I don't get it either. This is the closest she's come to the "classic" Fleetwood Mac sound in years. The song, the fabulous chorus and the big built up ending.

Let me make your list-making even more challenging now.
What criteria do you use in determining your rankings?
Are Stevie's vocals more important than the lyrics? Does your love for/aversion to Sharon & Lori's sound affect your choices? Do you generally prefer bluesy/torch singer Stevie, rocker Stevie, folksy Stevie, or witchy Stevie? Or is your list more influenced by how you think certain songs measure up to their earlier demos?

For me I usually go for witchy Stevie. I like meaningful lyrics, but the vocals really mattered to me after what I feel were a few duds on TISL & SYW. No surprise then that "Moonlight" tops my list - especially since I tried to judge it on its own terms, rather than compare it to my favorite demo.
Also, the only reason CTF is not at the very bottom of my ranking is that her vocal is good.

It changes with my moods. When you have an album with no duds and tons of variety, it sorta depends on what you are feeling at the moment. Next week, my least favorite song could be my top song.

And it's true that in the past I've really loves the little phrasing and extra vocals that Stevie puts on the end of a song as it trails to a close. I actually like that alot in Ghosts Are Gone even. But in Annabel Lee, it's regimented at the end. It almost sounds like a vocal exercise as she repeats closing lines. It's not that sense of wailing adlib abandon you get at the end of other songs, such as:

blame it on my wild, my wild, my willlllld heart baby, blame it on my wild heart . . .

I think I'm the only person on this board that really likes CTF :distress: The lyrics are pretty rudimentary and not among Stevie's most inspired, but I think the song is really beautiful and heart-felt and a great closer for the album. AND Stevie sounds great on it, like you said.

And to answer your question above, I prefer rocker Stevie with a dash of witchy ;).

Upon my 1st 2 listens of IYD, there were songs I immediately connected with and were instant favorites. But having revisited the album many times now. I love them all! Each for very different reasons. I simply cannot rank this collection of songs. I think that is a testament to how truly great this record is. It's an instant classic - an album I can't even fathom almost not being recorded in the pantheon of Stevie's catalogue.

well, I think the way she ended it on the album is a lot better than way it ended on demo. I mean she does cresendo the last of the verses and it does goes somewhere. It's a really good song, just goes on a little to long. The ending doesn't negate the song for me, I just sort of ignore the last 20 seconds of it. Love the middle part, really added to the song.

whats with all the I don't know what to make's on Ghosts are Gone. Whats not to get. It's a kick ass rock song but with amazing vocals unlike Running through the Garden for example. It's almost like Led Zepplin's Kashmir, which I know Stevie has mentioned trying to emulate in her Austrailia MSO show before.

no you are not, I love that song. The problem is we have all heard Cheaper than Free and Secret Love so much that lots of people are ignoring those songs. When everything evens out in a month or two or three, then people can really focus on their true favorites.

Love these songs...

01. Secret Love
02. Italian Summer
03. Moonlight
04. You May Be the One
05. Annabel Lee
06. Wide Sargasso Sea

Still trying to get into these songs...

Thanks! I seriously can't choose favorites among the different tiers, but I know which groups of songs are stronger for me.

Good. That's how I have to do it too:

Love everything about them, no complaints:
For What It's Worth
Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)
Annabel Lee
Wide Sargasso Sea
You May Be The One
In Your Dreams

Minor bugs:
Ghosts Are Gone - it drags on a bit for me. but I love that it's a fast rocker.
Secret Love - i do like it more than I did initially, but it's just not quite as good as the others.
Soldier's Angel - love love love the music, love the guitar, love the desparate haunting feel. but while some of the lyrics are incredible, others induce eye-rolling.
Italian Summer - i get such a big emotional response from the music building up to the crescendo. but the lyrics do nothing for me & come close to ruining the song tbqh. i have to give it more time, because i want to love it.
Cheaper Than Free - not terrible, but not as good as the other songs

No
New Orleans - I wanna get drunk, I wanna wear beads.
Everybody Loves You - i'm a little shocked that so many people love this tune. for me it's like a cross between i miss you, bombay sapphires & silver girl. bland adult contemporary blandness. :sorry:

I think I'm the only person on this board that really likes CTF :distress:

No, you're not. For me, it's just not quite as good as most of the other tunes on the album.

no you are not, I love that song. The problem is we have all heard Cheaper than Free and Secret Love so much that lots of people are ignoring those songs. When everything evens out in a month or two or three, then people can really focus on their true favorites.

See, I like Secret Love a lot now - way more than I did at first. it actually gets stuck in my head.

Bonus track - "My Heart"

Forgot about "My Heart," which will be on the Barnes & Noble special edition CD. If it's the same song that's been circulating since TISL, that will be on my "love" list, too.

Good. That's how I have to do it too:

Love everything about them, no complaints:
For What It's Worth
Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)
Annabel Lee
Wide Sargasso Sea
You May Be The One
In Your Dreams

agree.

Minor bugs:
Ghosts Are Gone - it drags on a bit for me. but I love that it's a fast rocker.

yeah, it's like 90 min long. but it's great.

Secret Love - i do like it more than I did initially, but it's just not quite as good as the others.

can't stop listening to it. it's in the "love everything about it" category for me. i CAN NOT believe that that stupid demo amber and i mocked mercilessly 5 years ago is now THIS SONG. unbelievable.

Soldier's Angel - love love love the music, love the guitar, love the desparate haunting feel. but while some of the lyrics are incredible, others induce eye-rolling.

initially this song made me want to hurl, but it's growing on me.

Italian Summer - i get such a big emotional response from the music building up to the crescendo. but the lyrics do nothing for me & come close to ruining the song tbqh. i have to give it more time, because i want to love it.

i love it and you're just a bitter buffalonian.

Cheaper Than Free - not terrible, but not as good as the other songs

No
New Orleans - I wanna get drunk, I wanna wear beads.

i love it and you're just a bitter buffalonian.

Everybody Loves You - i'm a little shocked that so many people love this tune. for me it's like a cross between i miss you, bombay sapphires & silver girl. bland adult contemporary blandness. :sorry:

bland song is bland.

I've said it to you before, and I'll say it again:

"I'm in Italy, it's raining, look at those islands, it's still raining, it's summer, raining hard, I'm in Italy."

And I guess I should apologize to Hawkeye for yelling at him when he said it didn't do anything for him in the sizzle reel.

1. For What It's Worth- love, love, love.
2. In Your Dreams- great vocals
3. Moonlight- the beginning is so haunting and beautiful, very RAL sounding.
4. New Orleans- The more I listen to it the more I like it.
5. Italian Summer- I am a sucker for strings they remind me of my wedding
6. Secret Love- As an album lead-off it makes more sense and it has grown on me
7. You May Be The One
8. Annabel Lee
9. Wild Sargasso Sea
10. Everybody Loves You

11. Soldier's Angel- I am soooo sad to have this one at the bottom of the list. This was my most anticipated track because I love me some LB, but I am just not feeling this track. I was expecting something a little more Twister-esque.

12. Cheaper Than Free- ah it's OK.

Overall, it's awesome. It beats TISL in my book and is right up there with BD. I was so happy that she came through vocally on this album. I was terrified we were going to get some ****ty vocals (SYW:eek:), but she totally delivered.

You May Be the One
Italian Summer
Moonlight (did not expect this AT ALL)

And really, I would have loved Cheaper Than Free had the lyrics not been so disastrously STU-pid.

Not sure yet where the rest of the songs stand. I have to listen to them some more.

I honestly didn't notice those lyrics until now--hilarious.

For me, the romanticism is kind of shattered and I have to snort every time she wails, "OOOOOH, it's so romantic! HEY! It's sooo soulful!!!"
Show us, Stevie. Don't tell us.
To me it sounds like something SNL would put into a sketch with Will Ferrell in drag, or something.

No, I like it too. I think the lyrics are fine. It's a really warm, heart-felt song to close out the album.

I don't get it either. This is the closest she's come to the "classic" Fleetwood Mac sound in years. The song, the fabulous chorus and the big built up ending.

I think its a case of lower being relative. I think all 13 songs are amazing, but when asked to rank them I did....so the one at the bottom "Ghosts Are Gone" isn't bad - its a very good song - its just that of these 13 excellent songs its my least favorite excellent song.

I love how everyone is finding something different in this album and not one of us can seem to agree on what the best song/worst song/next single/shouldn't have been recorded/will win a grammy tracks are

It took me a few listens, but I love the new album! I agree with those who said "Ghosts Are Gone" is a little too long...I don't really like the back end of this track and it could do with being a little shorter.

I hated "Cheaper Than Free" when I first heard it, but I think it finishes the album off well.

The 1 thing I would've done differently, is had "In Your Dreams" as track 2 and "For What It's Worth" as track 3, with no gap between "Secret Love" and IYD kicking straight in after the slightly anti-climatic end to "Secret Love". I think this would've kept the start of the album more upbeat and would really PULL the listener into the stories of the album and the journey it takes you on. I think "For What It's Worth" is a GREAT track (although not my favourite), but a little slow to get into right at the beginning of the album.

For What It’s Worth 10/10
Moonlight 10/10
Annabel Lee 10/10
Wide Sargasso Sea 9/10
Secret Love 8/10 (still hate the abrupt ending)
Italian Summer 8/10 (music sounds similar to Abba's "Winner Takes It All")
In Your Dreams 7/10
You May Be the One 7/10
Ghosts Are Gone 6/10 (good song but sounds like something Bryan Adams would do)
New Orleans 6/10
Soldier’s Angel (this years Illume...dull and repetitive) 3/10
Everybody Loves You (god awful...ruined by Dave's terrible vocals) 2/10
Cheaper Than Free (one of the worst things she's done...again Dave's awful vocals don't help) 1/10

whats with all the I don't know what to make's on Ghosts are Gone. Whats not to get. It's a kick ass rock song but with amazing vocals unlike Running through the Garden for example. It's almost like Led Zepplin's Kashmir, which I know Stevie has mentioned trying to emulate in her Austrailia MSO show before.

I agree it's a great rocker.

I don't know what the lyrics mean, but in my head I almost see a conceptual video of it with these groups of dead people (ghosts, corpses, mummies, zombies, I don't know) coming up to take their turn going into the light.

It's like Stevie is standing by a turnstile and as they get to her she sings the verse about them and then they can walk through and into the beyond. the boys, the girls, they all go one by one.

I can't find a rational explanation for the lyrics, but I think they are odd enough to lay the foundation for a great, imaginative video. Michele

I often find that songs I love on first listen quickly become annoying or even unlistenable after repeated listening, whereas songs that didn't really do anything to catch my interest on first or second spin, eventually become my favorites & most treasured. I'm finding this already with several songs on IYD. "You May Be the One" keeps moving up my list & is now in the top 3. Wide Sargasso Sea I didn't really get at first, until I realized it's a bedroom song. It fits in perfect with Danzig's "Sacrifice" & NIN's "Closer" when you're getting freaky... just sayin. But, there are still songs I haven't clicked with that may just take time to grow on me, "Everybody Loves You" mainly. But I urge everyone to put your least favorite songs on repeat 4x each, at different intervals througout the day, with different listening devices, switching between headphones, stereo speakers, car stereo, etc & force yourself to listen to them & you'd be really surprised how your view on them changes once you get a little more accustomed to the lyrics & instrumentation. You never know, your least favorite track might just end up being your favorite in the end... ;)

I agree wholeheartedly with this post. Excatly what happens to me. However, Everybody Loves You is one of my faves. I could not get over the suprise of it. I think I've listened to it a 100 times already. I am getting sick of it though. I've overdosed on it. You May Be the One is now in my top 4 songs as well. It's perfect.

I was just saying this yesterday. The production is not hard to adapt, & the song seems well suited to her live voice. It's hard to imagine Stevie managing the softness of the "Moonlight" vocal onstage. (Live versions of "Sara" & "Goodbye Baby" sound much harsher than the album versions.) It's hard to imagine Stevie managing the frenetic pace of IYD onstage. (Yes, FFG is fast-paced, but the breathing is not as hurried as in IYD, I think.) But this one sits comfortably in her natural range, & Lori & Sharon really shine.

Today's rankings (I agree with Jondalar that with an album this good, your favorites are likely to shift based on mood):

Classic
"Moonlight" continues to blow me away. Honestly I think its of a caliber with "Dreams", "Sara", "Gypsy", etc. Other songs may eventually reach this status ("New Orleans", "Annabel Lee") but "Moonlight" is an obvious stand-out.

The rest, in order for today:
2. Wide Sargasso Sea
3. New Orleans
4. Annabel Lee
5. Italian Summer
6. Everybody Loves You
7. For What It's Worth
8. Secret Love
9. In Your Dreams
10. Cheaper Than Free
11. You May Be The One
12. Soldier's Angel
13. Ghosts Are Gone

I'd rate songs 2-12 as excellent and song 13 as very good.

My very favourite: Wide Sargasso Sea, Ghosts Are Gone, Moonligth,
My favourite: Secret Love, In Your Dreams, Italian Summer
Good ones: Annabel Lee, New Orleans, For What It´s Worth, You May Be The One, Cheaper Than Free, Everybody Loves You

But what I definitely know that song Soldier´s Angel is really not my taste, I have to say I hate it...:sorry: well each album has that some one song :).

Somehow my tastes are radically divergent this time. I can't stand Wide Sargasso Sea - it might be one of my least favorite songs in Stevie's entire catalogue - it just doesn't seem to have any form and vocally it reminds me a lot of her listless performances on TISL. Plus lyrically as others have pointed out it's one of her most overt songs. MY rankings:

1. For What It's Worth
2. New Orleans
3. Moonlight
4. Secret Love
5. In Your Dreams
6. Soldier's Angel
7. Italian Summer
8. You May Be The One
9. Everybody Loves You
10. Annabel Lee
11. Ghosts are Gone
12. Cheaper than Free
13. Wide Sargasso Sea

And truly 1-10 are GREAT, 11 could be but it seems like a lighter Fall From Grace. Cheaper than Free, I like the tune and love the video just HATE the lyrics. At the moment, I like NOTHING about Wide Sargassso. What am I missing?

I really like it but it goes on a little too long, but that's just me. Her vocal is 10x better than on the demo

I liked the demo (Annabelle Lee) so much better. I thought it was beautiful and haunting, which went with the theme of the song. This version sounds a little over produced to me, but I still like it.

It's too soon for me to rank the songs yet, but so far I like Moonlight a lot.

It's a killer. My favorite I think. And the way it ends with one word isolated kind of reminds me of Italian Summer ending with "fall." But the thing about You May Be the One is that the ending brings you full circle. Because the song is about disillusionment for the most part, but the last message is of the magic that captured her up in the first place. You may be; you'll never be; but, oh, just think of all the things that we were.

As for Ghosts Are Gone, I'm not saying I want it in the setlist, but if it's not and Rock and Roll stays in, I will crush her top hat and pluck it's feather.

I think I know what you mean a little bit. Although I don't hear a similarity in the melody, I can see it in the tone. For instance, when she says you won't forget THIS, it sounds similar to "your mama's going to move you uptown" or "just be nice to the gentleman and they'll be nice to you," when the line ends with a strong inflection and an ironic punch.

I honestly didn't notice those lyrics until now--hilarious.

For me, the romanticism is kind of shattered and I have to snort every time she wails, "OOOOOH, it's so romantic! HEY! It's sooo soulful!!!"Show us, Stevie. Don't tell us.
To me it sounds like something SNL would put into a sketch with Will Ferrell in drag, or something.

Me too. :o

Taking Marissa's route--

Tier One:
1. For What It's Worth
2. New Orleans
3. You May Be The One
4. Moonlight

Tier Two:
4. In Your Dreams
5. Secret Love

Tier Three:
6. Everybody Loves You
7. Wide Sargasso Sea
8. Cheaper Than Free
9. Annabel Lee
10. Italian Summer

Tier Four:
11. Ghosts are Gone
12. Soldier's Angel

Interesting. Your picks are probably the most different I've seen so far. Does that sentence even make sense?

I am soo glad that people are feeling You May Be the One. I keep coming back this song. I think it's excellent. Her vocal is perfect on this song and we can hear the muscians and I love the way the song ends (Magic). That song could be a single.

I f*cking love it.

As for Ghosts Are Gone, I'm not saying I want it in the setlist, but if it's not and Rock and Roll stays in, I will crush her top hat and pluck it's feather.

Nope, they don't. But I live at the base of the Rockies in Denver, and they do appear to stretch towards the sky when the sun is behind them at dusk.

I can't decide if I love this song or For What It's Worth better....they both are so damn good.

Okay, after listening to it a dozen more times.

Tier One - Perfect

Everybody Loves You
New Orleans
For What It's Worth
You May Be The One (Didn't like this one at all at first, now, I totally adore it)
Moonlight
Annabel Lee
Ghosts Are Gone

Tier Two - Love
Soldier's Angel
In Your Dreams
Italian Summer
Secret Love

Tier Three - Really like
Wide Sargasso Sea (I like it, but it's not clicking with me just yet)
Cheaper Than Free

All in all, I'm just amazed at how consistently good the album is. There's no noticeable "clunker" that all Nicks albums tend to have. I can tell there are a few songs I won't like as much once they lose the "new song" sheen, but, I can't see myself vehemently disliking any of them, the way I do a few songs from other albums.

after listening to this album over and over again, my top 4 favorites are

Moonlight
You May Be the One
Everybody Loves You
Soldiers Angel

These songs are meaty and musically and lyrically deep. However, there are soo many good songs on this album. I'm always debating if those really are my top 4.

Rock solid, absolutely love these four.

-Moonlight
-For What It's Worth
-Everybody Loves You -If there is one song on IYD that epitomizes Fleetwood Mac meets Eurythmics, meets the Beatles, this is it.
-You May Be The One

my current top tier:

You May Be the One - I have totally fallen for this song.. i love the chorus.. this track is my current favorite
Moonlight - love her vocals and the ending. Stellar song.
Ghosts are Gone - this song rocks.. totally starts to kick at the 3:30 mark...
Everybody Loves You - i like how jwd described this track.. so on the money. This song continues to creep up towards my top..
For What Its Worth - this was a grower for me.. and it has grown..
Secret Love - still diggin' it
Annabel Lee - just magical..
Italian Summer - I think this would have been the perfect ending.
Wide Sargasso Sea - just climbed into my top tier

I really like, but I haven't fallen in love, yet:

In Your Dreams - definitely single material.. like its upbeat feel,, but just don't really "feel" it
New Orleans - I really like it, but it feels out of place at the number 5 spot. I feel like the album starts to really get going after "sea" and this just kind of slows it down. a beautiful and nice sentiment.

Ok. I like these two ok, but don't think they really fit on this record:

Soldier's Angel - pretty and love Lindsey's playing and singing.. it just doesn't go with the rest of the record.
Cheaper than Free - I've created an ipod IYD playlist - CTF is not on it.

Actually, no, they don't grow. I know how mountains are formed, just as you said, but that is not "growing", rather it is "pushing." Besides when was the last time Mt. Shasta "grew" from current measurements? ;)

Pfeh, this is semantics. In geological timeframes mountains get larger if they're being pushed (as you said) by plate tectonics, but in common usage people do constantly refer to mountains "growing", even in scientific literature: "Studying growth of Himalyan mountains..." http://www.research.vt.edu/resmag/2004resmag/mountains.html

I was just going to say, I hope people will start adding it to their rankings. For me, it's her worst release since the late 1980s, so a very distant last place. I am so glad it did not make the 'real' album, and I thank her for that.:sorry:

I agree....I think "New Orleans", "For What It's Worth" , "Annabel Lee" and "Moonlight" all sound like lost or coulda been Mac songs.

"Soldier's Angel" could be....I think of it more like a BuckinghamNicks song.

3. Secret Love

Tier Two (these I am liking a lot!):

Tier Three (these I like, but will probably need to grow on me some):

7. Italian Summer
8. You May Be The One
9. Ghosts Are Gone
10. New Orleans
11. My Heart

Tier Four (these ones just don't do much for me.. yet anyways):

3. Wide Sargasso Sea
4. Italian Summer
5. Anabel Lee
6. In Your Dreams
7. Secret Love
8. Everybody loves you

1- Secret Love - Love it!!!
2- For What It's Worth - Love it!!!
3- In Your Dreams - Like it a lot (Is it me or did I detect a hint of Tom Petty?)
4- Wide Sargasso Sea - Love it!!!
5- New Orleans - Like it (but not as much-Need to listen to it again)
6- Moonlight - Don't care for it (I think one of the main reasons is that I'm utterly fed up with vampires. I wonder if they had taken out that part of the title I may have liked it better?)
7- Annabel Lee - Love It!!
8- Soldier's Angel - All right (maybe it will grow on me)
9- Everybody Loves You - All right
10- Ghosts Are Gone - Nope sorry
11- You May Be The One - OK
12- Italian Summer - NO Sorry not my taste at all
13- Cheaper Than Free - Sigh, sorry again nope.

Of course this is only my first go through so we will see if it grows on me after a few repeat listening.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I hear Stevie's voice.. younger. I don't mean it's getting like in the Rumours era, but when I listen, specially Secret Love, it sounds like a far more younger woman, better than in Say you Will.

The absolute best for me:

1. For What It's Worth

I'm glad a lot of people are liking "For What It's Worth"... it actually frustrates me that I can't get into it at all, and I just can't figure out why exactly. I think the chorus evades me as though it doesn't exist when I listen, and the one note melody that begins the verses doesn't really agree with me either. I do like the guitar riff and the overall production has a very nice early to mid-70's folk/rock sound, which is probably the reason why I want to like this one so much.

I'm one of those people who isn't a big fan of this disc, so....

Songs I Like

Secret Love
For What It's Worth
In Your Dreams (I don't like the verses but the chorus is very catchy and the song is chorus-heavy, so I'm kind of liking it more and more)
Annabel Lee

Songs I Kind of Like
Wide Sargasso Sea
Ghosts Are Gone

Songs I'm Indifferent To
Moonlight

Songs I Have Issues With
New Orleans (if seeing a little kid saying "Why don't you help us?" inspired this song, then how can she write lyrics that totally ignore how the federal government delayed for sooo long to even begin to help those poor people? )

Soldier's Angel (I get that she is trying to help alleviate the suffering of soldiers, but to me it seems like completely ignoring the suffering of all the non-military people involved in this war, including Iraqis, is either naive or insensitive, and the lyric calling the war righteous really pisses me off. Musically I really really like this song and I would be able to get past it if not for that one line.)

Songs I Don't Like
My Heart (boring pop schlock)
Everybody Loves You (boring pop schlock part 2...I can hear Annie Lennox singing this and maybe making it slightly less boring)
You May Be the One (this reminds me of Somebody Stand By Me, which I can't listen to)
Italian Summer (I was really looking forward to this song, but it's just boring. The melody of the verse is very monotone and I don't like the background vocals at all)
Cheaper Than Free (Stevie belittles Lindsey for asking her to be consistent in what person she uses in a song, she tells him that no one every criticized Bob Dylan's lyrics, and then she writes this. )

Anyway, I'm listening to it a lot, hoping it will grow on me. But even if it doesn't, at least there are a few new Stevie songs to listen to :)

I'm not overly thrilled with Dave Stewart's production. I feel like the vocals are too loud and so is the lead guitar and in a way where they stand out in their own space far too much, feeling distant from the rest of the band. My track list pretty much highlights the songs where that isn't the case. I also think the songs where Stevie wrote her own music end up being the strongest in all cases except Italian Summer. Italian Summer's production is yummy. I'm a sucker for strings.

Secret Love is a known quantity. It's a pop song. it's well produced, sounds like it should have been on TISL. It sound like nothing else on the album, which is a bummer.

Soldier's Angel I have the most to comment on. As much as I want to love Soldier's Angel, and I think as a poem, it's a beautiful piece with a great message, musically I think it sounds like a half-done demo, and the meter really should have been edited from the poem to fit more into song structure, rather than sounding forced into parts of the song. If I could get ahold of the raw tracks for this I'd show you how I'd love it :D

My top 5 in order are:
Secret Love
Italian Summer
Moonlight
Annabel Lee
For What It's Worth

Not a fan of:
Ghost are Gone
In Your Dreams
You May Be The One

Finally got around to ranking these--I'd been waiting for My Heart. Used 30 Rock quotes to describe my true feelings.

Tier 1: "Just like a bird, like a friendly bird that embraces all ideas and shoots out of its eyes all kinds of beauty" (Life-changing levels of greatness)
Moonlight
My Heart
Wide Sargasso Sea
For What it's Worth

Tier 2: "I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant." (Love these)
Italian Summer
In Your Dreams
You May Be the One
Soldier's Angel
New Orleans

Tier 3: "Always smiles-time" (Like them a lot, some nitpicks)
Everybody Loves You--great verses, not a fan of the opening notes or the word "caahn't"
Cheaper Than Free
Ghosts are Gone

Tier 4: "It's like an owl without a graduation cap" (Off, somehow. Do nothing for me)
Annabel Lee
Secret Love--UO, but I would cut this from the album entirely and move the title track to the opening.

Now that we have IYD...rate all of Stevie's solo albums in order of favorite to least favorite

01 RAL (tons of memories with this LP....to me her best achievement so far) :]
02 Bella Donna (simply classic...with only one song I skip)
03 IYD (11 brilliant songs and 3 duds...her vocals are excellent here)
04 TISL (3 bad songs on the LP...the rest is fantastic..."Planets" is still one of my all time favorite tracks by her)
05 Wild Heart (Spotty...some duds...)
06 Street Angel (not as bad as some say...some great material here)
07 TOSOTM (rarely listen to this one...overproduced) :sorry:

It's tough to do a 1-13/14. I like the tier idea.

Over The Top Favorites: (A+) Wide Sargasso Sea, Annabel Lee, In Your Dreams, For What It's Worth (I put each of these on repeat)

Right Up There: A (still a 4.0): Moonlight, New Orleans, Ghosts Are Gone, Everybody Loves You, Secret Love, My Heart, You May Be The One

Good Song, But Not A Favorite (A-): Italian Summer (this song is very pretty, Stevie's voice is full and lush, but musically I think it belongs to an earlier generation. Still, it provides diversity on this album, and gives something for everyone!

Weakest Songs In MyMind: B-/C Soldier's Angel, Cheaper Than Free Soldier's Angel is a fulfillment of a promise, and earned it's way on the album. Cheaper Than Free, on the other hand, doesn't actually fit on this album in my mind other than to provide a Dave/Stevie duet. They both worked hard on this album--so that song stays, too. Take a bow. You both deserve it!

This album was sequenced perfectly. It's a solid album for Stevie.

Ok, this was tough, and it varies with every listen. I think I would have Secret Love at number 5 if it hadnt been released so much earlier, I think there is some novelty for a lot of these songs still so, again, this changes constantly

1. Moonlight
2. For What its Worth
3. Wide Sargasso Sea
4. Italian Summer
5. Anabel Lee
6. In Your Dreams
7. Secret Love
8. Everybody loves you
9. Cheaper Than Free
10. Ghosts are Gone
11. New Orleans
12. You May be the One (just havent listened to it enough I think...)
13. Soldier's Angel

Ok, so I updated this. I was able to listen to You May be the One a little more and I like it! New Orleans is actually starting to grow on me. And I am starting to like Ghosts are Gone even LESS now...

1. Moonlight
2. For What Its Worth
3. Wide Sargasso Sea
4. Secret Love
5. Anabel Lee
6. In Your Dreams
7. Italian Summer
8. You May be the One
9. Everybody Loves You
10. New Orleans
11. Cheaper Than Free
12. My Heart (not as big of a fan of the new version)
13. Ghosts are Gone
14. Soldier's Angel

My current rankings:

Classics:
1. Moonlight
2. Annabel Lee

Excellent:
3. Wide Sargasso Sea
4. New Orleans
5. Everybody Loves You
6. Italian Summer
7. For What It's Worth
8. In Your Dreams

Very Good:
9. Secret Love
10. Cheaper Than Free
11. You May Be The One
12. Soldier's Angel

Good:
13. Ghosts Are Gone

My list is basically still the same, with the exception that I now consider "New Orleans" a third classic track.

After buying the Barnes & Noble version and listening to it repeatedly here is my revised opinion:

For What It’s Worth 10/10
Moonlight 10/10
Annabel Lee 10/10
Wide Sargasso Sea 9/10
My Heart 7/10 (I really like this one)
Secret Love 9/10 (still hate the abrupt ending)
Italian Summer 8/10 (music sounds similar to Abba's "Winner Takes It All")
In Your Dreams 7/10
You May Be the One 7/10
Ghosts Are Gone 6/10 (good song but sounds like something Bryan Adams would do)
New Orleans 7/10
Soldier’s Angel (this years Illume...dull and repetitive) 3/10
Everybody Loves You (god awful...ruined by Dave's terrible vocals) 2/10
Cheaper Than Free (one of the worst things she's done...again Dave's awful vocals don't help) 1/10

“In Your Dreams” continues to sound better.. with age.. with a glass of mellow dry red.. When I first started listening to In Your Dreams, I went from front to back to front to back for about 20 times.. Trying to figure it out.. just feelin’ it.. a new Stevie Nicks record…my personal holiday. Next, I began listening to a certain song on repeat (Ghosts are Gone, Moonlight, Annabel Lee, and You May Be the One to name a few)… and then in small pieces.. my mixes.. my blue water close to the fog mix - Everybody Loves You, Ghosts are Gone, You May Be the One, and Italian Summer. My “what if this was Fleetwood Mac” mix - For What it’s Worth, Annabel Lee (almost is), You May Be The One (imagine Lindsey and Christine singing backup on ‘.. see the light inside you..” and the oohs and aahhs..) my juke joint fairy dust mix - Wide Sargasso Sea, New Orleans, Moonlight, and Annabel Lee… my short lesbian love mix - For What Its Worth and Annabel Lee. If I didn’t know anything about Stevie Nicks and listened to For What Its Worth and Annabel Lee, while flipping through the cd booklet, I would think she was a lesbian..

And than I sometimes drop by and listen to Secret Love and In Your Dreams.. btw, isn’t Moonlight the most beautifully strange, kind of woman that would haunt you song - just staring?.. Soon I’m going to start wrapping these In Your Dreams tracks around with songs from Trouble In Shangri-la, another beautiful album. I think they will mix very, very well..

I haven’t listened to Soldier’s Angel and Cheaper than Free in a few days..

I love this record.. “…like a ghost.. through the fog..”

We are ranking these songs, but I put this thing on shuffle and all these songs are just great. There is sooo much variety. It's like listening to the radio. You never get bored. I think today after my fandome was over, I finally started to appreciate this album for what it really is --- very, solid songs across all radio formats. It's really special. Her and Dave managed to make really good songs in each genre. I'm really digging this album. It's just a good job across all genres.

I feel the same way, which makes the review from Slant magazine all the more bizarre. I literally can't fathom that review. He might as well have told me that the sky is red, water is dry, and up is down. :P

Modern country which is barely country at all. You May Be The One and Wide Sargasso Sea would even have a chance. Wide Sargasso Sea is very Fancy by Reba Mcentire and country played Picture by Kid Rock. They are playing Bon Jovi too.

The violins are stellar with Stevie's voice - nice touch on this album!

1. Annabel Lee, sing-a-long, toe-tapper
2. Italian Summer, takes me away - like Calgon
3. Moonlight
4. For What It's Worth
5. You May Be the One - big fan of her jazzy voice
6. Ghosts are Gone
7. Secret Love
8. In Your Dreams
9. Cheaper Than Free - Dave's voice is kinda cool with hers, in a fresh, new way
10. Everybody Loves You

I just got the chance to listen to IYD on a long road trip we had it cranked up and it was awesome. I've wanted to do this everyday since the thread started, but I just can't seem to prioritize the songs!
I THINK Italian Summer is my favorite
but I really, really love (in the Album order...I guess with a gun to my head, I'd have to say they'd be at number two...and I'd probably get shot) For What It's Worth, In Your Dreams, New Orleans, Moonlight, Everybody loves You & You May Be The One

<edit...I keep forgetting Secret Love and My Heart! I guess they would go here...or maybe SL at least belongs up there^...I don't know! ARGH! I love them all...

Cheaper Than Free would be next followed by Annabel Lee
Ghost Are Gone
and coming up in the rear are Wide Sargasso Sea and Soldier's Angel

my short lesbian love mix - For What Its Worth and Annabel Lee. If I didn’t know anything about Stevie Nicks and listened to For What Its Worth and Annabel Lee, while flipping through the cd booklet, I would think she was a lesbian..

Keith, I totally get where someone would think Stevie was gay upon listening to "Annabel Lee", ignorant of the fact that a man actually wrote it. I'm not sure where you're getting the feeling that FWIW has lesbian tendencies.

As far as the pictures go, Stevie's always held her women friends closely. I'm sure she's very comfortable with her sexuality and doesn't care what people think. Pictures on TISl and WH could also suggest that she may be gay. Her performances of "Nightbird" with Lori on Solid Gold and SNL, with them singing so closely, might make some think this as well. At least one person I know has said this to me. I just love that Stevie is so comfortable with herself and I doubt that it's even crossed her mind. After all there are many kinds of love, they don't all have to be sexual in nature.

I eagerly purchased the CD at WalMart after I left work on Tuesday evening and it has been my entertaining and constant audio companion in my hour long driving commutes the rest of the week. I do tend to skip through SL because I have listened to it so much while waiting for the CD release. I find it difficult to rank these songs in any order of appreciation because each is well done and trigger different emotional responses in me each time I hear any of them. By Friday night I can rank the most repeated song I 've played is IYD – my take on this song is that it's about us, her fans and her interaction with us though I know some here link it to more personal relationships of Stevie's, which it could be of course. I can rank my happiest surprise song is Annabel Lee – I have the old demo in my collection – thanks to The Ledge's Lovelies – and the demo is not a favorite of mine – I agree with many here that often Stevie's demos are better than the released production, and I was concerned about AL – however, I gotta say, I like it! I just think Stevie is sharing the stories and connections that are meaningful to her and it's all good, and I'm genuinely equally pleased with all the songs. xoxoxo

3. You May Be The One
4. Soldier's Angel
5. Annabel Lee
6. Moonlight
7. Secret Love
8. In Your Dreams (catchy and great lyrics but I find it generic musically, like a Mary Chapin Carpenter or Lucinda Williams cast-off)
9. Cheaper Than Free (the opposite situation - really like the music but the lyrics make me snicker)
10. Wide Sargasso Sea (just because of the impassioned vocal - otherwise uninteresting)

Then I basically don't like:
11. Italian Summer (ooey gooey)
12. Everybody Loves You (icky sticky)
13. Ghosts Are Gone (This to me is a cheesy 80s hair metal song. Yuck.)

Moonlight - Love it!

Everybody Loves You - Amazing. This should be a single.

Secret Love - I think people hate on this song just because it's the first single...

My Heart - Better than the TISL version, sorry!

Annabel Lee - Can't believe how much I like this! I aniticipated eye rolls but was pleasantly surprised!

In Your Dreams - The "Blue Denim" of this album.

For What It’s Worth - Grown on me a lot in the past week.

Cheaper Than Free - Silly and simple, but still really pretty.

You May Be the One - Reminds me of "Somebody Stand By Me".

Wide Sargasso Sea - Great music and production, but some of the lyrics are just... meh.

Italian Summer - See above.

New Orleans - See above again.

Ghosts Are Gone - A missed opportunity. This is the "Love Is Like A River" of this album; rockin' song that should have been great, but...

Soldier’s Angel - Love the sentiment. But that's about it.

I find it hard to rank these songs because I think they're all great, but my preference is based on what stands out for me. I am in the camp that this is her best album next to Bella Donna and I think they're more or less equal in quality.

New Orleans: The high dress up and brush by is delicious and satisfies my hunger for Stevie's best vocal tones, which to these ears are her high notes.
Soldiers Angel: I love the Fleetwood Mac tone to this song, the vocal interplay between Lindsey and Stevie is awesome.
Moonlight: One of Stevie's best ever recorded vocals, note perfect, beautifully sung.
Anabell Lee: Alongside Rhiannon and Gypsy, this song stands up.
Wide Sargasso Sea: Love the purr in her voice, closest to the Rhiannon studio version vocal we've heard since Beautiful Child.
For What it's Worth: Some of Stevie's best writing ever.
Secret Love: A stellar tune that always left me scratching my head as to why Fleetwood Mac didn't record this song, as good as any of Christine's radio friendly pop tracks.
Italian Summer: Again, the stellar vocal with the strings and I agree the ultimate album ender in her entire career, switch with Cheaper than Free.
Ghost are Gone: A fun tune
You may be the One: Much much better than Somebody Stand by Me,Stevie is out of her comfort zone with this tune and does an amazing job.
In Your Dreams: The closest to the I Don't want to Know vibe I've ever heard and something Stevie should have done more often because it works so well for her.
Everybody Loves You: Great single material and I love the British "Can't" again, she is using her stellar voice to it's full potential.
Cheaper than Free: I like this song and the lyrics as well. I wouldn't change a thing.
My Heart: A great song that I do think fits on the album, I would put it between In Your Dreams and Wide Sargasso Sea.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this album and can't find anything wrong with it except including My Heart.

I know some posters will think this thread is premature, but many of us have listened to the songs many times by now. Obviously this is based on 1st (or 1st-day) impressions.

Here's my list, beginning with the best:

Moonlight
New Orleans
Italian Summer
Wide Sargasso Sea
For What It’s Worth
Secret Love
In Your Dreams
You May Be the One
Everybody Loves You
Ghosts Are Gone
Soldier’s Angel
Cheaper Than Free
Annabel Lee

- Jake

In the 2 1/2 months since the album dropped, my impressions have somewhat changed. The top three are pretty interchangeable to me in terms of ranking, different as they are in terms of style. Best to worst:

Moonlight (Still not as good as the 1980s demos, but really good. The main thing missing for me on this track is that the melody builds, but her voice stays controlled & safe. I'd love it if she let rip her wail towards the end.)
New Orleans (Builds nicely. Vocal sounds less produced/more authentically Stevie than in "Moonlight", which is good.)
You May Be the One (Shows off Stevie's solo sound, i.e. mixing her voice with Sharon's & Lori's. At first I cringed at the kiss-right-out-there-in-the-universe part, but it has grown on me.)
Wide Sargasso Sea (Ragged vocal, but works. Just needs to be a little shorter.)
In Your Dreams (Nicely polished track with a surprisingly good texture to her voice.)
Soldier’s Angel (Nicely thought out lyrics. Vocal is heartfelt, which forgives some of the nasal quality.)
Italian Summer (Stevie needed to take some energy drink before she ran out of lyrics on this one. A softer vocal might also improve the song in some places.)
Secret Love (Just a little too slick in production for my taste.)
Cheaper Than Free (I like the vocal, so I can forgive some of those lyrics.)
Everybody Loves You (Good verses, annoying chorus.)
For What it’s Worth (Good vocal on verses, flat/grating vocal on chorus.)
Ghosts are Gone (Am I the only one who thinks the riff is good but needs Stevie & or Sharon & Lori singing with it - at least near the end - to be truly great? IMO a Stevie solo album track should showcase her voice & lyrics rather than a guitar. Even "Edge" keeps the focus on her voice & lyrics rather than on its guitar riff. Would make perfect sense as an FM track though.)
Annabel Lee (I hate the vocal & am not in love with the melody. Production is okay. Best part is the lyrics, so kudos to Poe.)
(My Heart) (Can't even comment.)

My favorites are still:

Secret Love
Wide Sargasso Sea
Moonlight
Annabel Lee

2nd tier, but so close they could almost be 1st tier:

For What it's Worth
In Your Dreams
New Orleans
My Heart
You May Be the One
Italian Summer

Not bad, but not on repeat on the iPod either:

Soldier's Angel
Ghosts Are Gone
Cheaper Than Free

Meh:

Everybody Loves You - still can't get over that stupid intro and Stevie saying "cahn't." Which is a shame, b/c otherwise, it's a beautiful song.

My thoughts on In Your Dreams

Absolutely love:

Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream) -- Perfect wouldn't change a thing. 10 out of 10
Annabel Lee -- I waited a VERY long time to hear this song and I was not disapointed. 10 out of 10
Soldier's Angel -- Stevie was right, she needed Lindsey on it to make this song complete. I cry every time I listen to it. 10 out of 10
In Your Dreams -- A great little rocker ... it should be a single. 9 out of 10
Wide Sargasso Sea -- Very different but so very Stevie. And those high notes she belts out! 9 out of 10

Great Songs:

Secret Love -- Sweet little song with a catchy tune. And no matter how much she protests, you know she knows who it's about! 8 out of 10
For What It's Worth -- Bittersweet and brilliant lyrics. 8 out of 10
Everybody Loves You -- There is alot that is said AND left unsaid in these lyrics that make this song great. 8 out of 10
New Orleans -- You just feel this song. 8 out of 10

Okay songs for me:

Ghosts Are Gone -- The most rocking song on the album; wish Lindsey/FM could have gotten his/their hands on this one. 7.5 out of 10
You May Be The One -- Loved her voice on this. 7 out of 10
Italian Summer -- The lyrics repeat too much but I like that she stepped out of her comfort zone. 7 out of 10
Cheaper Than Free -- Love the country feel to it and Dave's vocals. 7 out of 10

Miss:

My Heart -- This song felt off to me; like it doesn't fit on the album. I skip it every time I play the album.
