View Full Version : A Friendly Request from a Fellow Fan :)

Soo... the anticipation is obviously building around here as all of us are getting excited for Stevie's new release! FINALLY.
I logged on today and noticed a slew of links to be able to stream the album. And that's great for those who want a sneak peak :)

However, I have a friendly request that I'm not trying to come across as bitchy...

I'm in no way "condemning" anyone for listening to it.
But personally, I'm waiting till I have the physical copy in my hands. It's just my own personal preference of listening to new music from my favorite artists. It's my decision and I'm sure the decision of many others around here.

So, in regards to this, can I politely request to those who DO wish to listen, to not have such blatent "spoilers" for those of us who decide to wait? Like, I mean, obviously you all want to chat about it - this is a discussion board. But could you talk about the spoilers INSIDE a thread. As opposed to ruining the suprise on a thread title?

Like, I'll take for example the title to this thread:
The part of "Lady From the Mountain" that I'm missing from "Moonlight...."

...That REALLY bummed me out. I'm not looking into the thread cause I don't want to knwo about it - but now I know something more about a track that I want kept as a surprise.

I'm in no way trying to offend the original poster of that. I just am saying, could you keep comments like that INSIDE a thread so those who want to wait don't accidently see it? If we decide to stray into a thread and come across it, then obviously it's our own fault. But when it's blatently slapped on the main forum page, it's kind of a let down.

I hope I got my point across clear, and I hope I didn't offend anyone. :)

I'm inclined to agree with you here. Spoilers should be solely for those who wish to read/listen to them, and shouldn't be forced down the throat of people who are waiting for the experience and surprise.

I really don't mean to sound rude and I totally hear where you are coming from but my suggestion would be to just not come here to The Ledge until you've listened to your CD. Just a suggestion...

Surely some of the fun of a new release is getting to experience the anticipation and excitement with fellow fans? It's not exactly fair to be cut off from an entire "society" just because there's a risk of coming across spoilers. Isn't there a middle ground that doesn't involve people being driven away?

HighPassion
04-27-2011, 07:23 PM
Well yeah, I understand that I could just not come here. But that'd be boring. and It's not like there's stuff I wouldn't wanna talk about.

Plus, how was I to know that this place would suddenly be spammed with it?

I'm just SOOOOOOOOO bummed I found out Lady From the Mountain was on the album. Thats an epic song and I would've shat myself had I been able to find out on my own.

So regardless, I don't think someone should just "not come here" especially if they don't know that they're about to be suckerpunched with spoilers.

I'm not saying to not talk about it, just to be mindful to others. :)

False. It has pretty much always been etiquette here and on other message boards to not post spoilers in the topic of posts...and to include the word "SPOILERS" in that title, so that people who don't want to know don't open it.

I know you just joined this month, but that has been common knowledge since January that a variation of the song was on the album. Sorry you had to find out over the board.

Honestly, not to be rude, but it's a CD I don't see it as having spoilers.

It's not like it's a story, and people told you the end. Not to mention the spoiler you mentioned was common knowledge as far as I knew. I'm sorry you found out when you didn't, but it was probably generally assumed that everyone at a fan forum knew.

It has been ten years , people are overly excited !! she gave RS the cd to post ,it is with her permission the songs are their for everyone to enjoy.

I don't think this is an unreasonable request. And by no means should you avoid the board during such an exciting time!

I agree with Jannie, it really is a simple request. I've already listened but I can agree in a general sense that spoilers should be kept inside the thread out of respect for the many who do like to wait to hear/know anything until they have the album. It's not really a big deal to just keep details inside the post, people shouldn't have to stay away from the board completely to keep away from spoilers.

HighPassion
04-27-2011, 11:12 PM
Well I didn't mean to start a commotion or a fight. It was a simple request.
And, I in no way was telling people NOT to listen, or saying that it was wrong they were listening. And I never told them to not talk about it either. I simply asked a "friendly request".

I've read dozens of articles that no way mentioned which specific older songs she's used for the new album, except for Secret Love.
Obviously new information is goign to be on the board, and people are going to take the opportunity to hear the album and discuss it. All that I asked was if they could keep "spoilers" inside the thread. And yes, even though it's a CD - there's still spoilers. And of course we're all excited since it's been 10 years, but some people like experiencing the song first hand - whether it's online or with a physical copy.

But what do I know. I'm a noob.

However, I'm not going to start a pointless bickerment. I've got bigger fish to fry than to argue with a bunch of strangers.

I love how everyone's post starts with Not to be rude but...

So...

Not to be rude but...who cares?

You're going to hear the album at some point anyway...what's the big friggin deal? I was reading about everyone's impressions before I even heard the stream and I was still surprised on my own how good all the songs sounded.

I think there will be an element of surprise for anyone who is still holding out just how good this album sounds...and I think we should just leave it at that.

WOW. Wasn't someone talking about the "toxicity" of the old members blah, blah, blah? Seems the "newer" ones are just as capeable of mean. I am not rushing to the new album. I know where it's at, dabbled in it a bit, but I want the anticipation of it being released, just like I had to in 2001, 1989, so on and so forth. I personally like pouring over the liner notes and pics and well, who cares what I like, but I am surprised that so many new posts do NOT have the word SPOLIER in title. TISL, just about every post about the song, album, etc said as such. Respect the initial request. is absurd to suggest they stay away from ledge, and just hear what people have to say. They do when you speak.

Hi Anita :wavey:

Things have change a lot since 2001 (and definitely 1989) in terms of accessibility to new music and how it is distributed today via the internet vs. 10 years ago. There is a lot more opportunity for people to hear things and discuss prior to an album's release. I just think asking every person on here to write SPOILER in the title of every new post is a bit unrealistic. Right now the main topic of Stevie Nicks is these new songs, of course that's what everyone's going to be talking about and that's the "big news" right now. I have total respect for those of you who would like to wait for the hard copy but with the internet being the way it is today but it's kind of unrealistic to think the new album is not going to be dissected in every way possible on a Stevie fan board and to ask everyone to walk on egg shells and note spoilers doesn't seem realistic.

It's not at all unrealistic. Is it really, truly that hard to refrain from putting spoiler-like information in the title of a thread?

It could be, sure. But the spoiler info should not be right there in the open to be seen by those who would rather not be spoiled.

I think people who come to the Ledge complaining about spoilers the day that a new album is leaked are the same people who would go to Arizona in August and complain that someone should turn off the heat.

I chat on all sorts of message forums: collectors of various things, video games, music - and it's common practice almost everywhere to put spoiler tags on the subject line of posts that have spoilers in them. It's not really that unusual.

Many forums even require that spoiler posts be highlighted over in black so that the text must be 'selected ' in order to read it.

That said.....we are a bunch of rabid fans that have waited 10 years for this album. It's hard to contain the excitement within spoiler tags!

The word "SPOILER" does not need to be in the thread title. But anything that would SPOIL the surprise for someone should be in the body of the thread, not the title. For instance, I think most everyone knows that if the title of the thread says, "Moonlight Thoughts..." there will be spoilers involved. Just don't identify what the spoilers ARE in the title. And I definitely don't believe there is reason to be rude to a friendly and polite request.

And the fact is, the album has not been released. Streaming it on the internet is not the same as having the CD in our hot little hands, on our own preferred sound system.

To me, it's not fair to say a spoiler warning is unreasonable until after the official release.

Okay, I'm not real good at math but after doing a little research on the view counts of IYD spoiler type threads (i.e. - IYD available for preview on RS- has over 10,000)...I'd say there are a whole bunch of spoiled brats around here. I guess my momma was right about me.

HighPassion- I can understand where you are coming from, I really can...but how in the world do stop yourself from listening to the song previews? I lack such self control...

saintvox

How can you spoil a CD?

It's an abstract thing. I mean saying which demos and such I suppose, and maybe lyrics....but even then...I don't see it as a spoiler. Not to mention that most threads that would be tagged as spoiler are pretty obvious.

So far one thread has maybe "spoiled" and someone changed it's title.

HighPassion

Wow, I've seen more maturity and respect on an Avril Lavigne fan forum. I think people need to calm down, it was a simple request. I thought e it was realistic, and if someone could thoroughly explain to me how complicated and impossible it is to leave out no-brain information in the TITLE of a thread, that's maybe a maximum of 10 words... Please do :)

But what's done is done. Nobody needs to freak out and have an anneurysm about this - because it's true, it's not that big of a deal. It was a simple (So I thought) request. I'd say a lot of people who came into this thread with their defenses high are the ones who made a big deal about it.

And to those that share me opinion and respect my request. I thank you :)

Yeah, it's tempthing/hard sometimes :) But I just think about all the times I've listened to an album leak before hand and then when I'd finally gotten the physical copy, I wouldn't really listen to it as much.

And, the frist experience is always the best! I'd rather not do it through my laptop hehe. But yeah, it can be very tricky and gruelling sometimes!

I do understand your stance in not wanting to hear the album until you have it in your hands. It is interesting that Stevie decided to let this album out the way that she did, given her dread of the internet. It does remind me of hearing something on the radio for the first time and being curious to find the whole thing.

Dude, if your intention is to remain completely in the dark about this album until it is released, every time you come onto the Ledge, you're playing with fire. Why does everybody else have to play into this nanny state of mind just because there are a few anomalies with some bizarre emotional attachment to release dates? If you don't wanna get shot, don't wander into the battlefield.

This ignorance is really getting out of control.
Where did I at all state for people not to talk about it? Where did I state that I don't want to hear anything about the album?

Some people just aren't getting what's coming across, and emotions are running too high.

I may have worded that wrong with the "being discussed" part. Obviously there's room for discussion about the album. But I'm not going to keep repeating over and over again what I was trying to ask being as people around here aren't mature enough to handle matters without taking something and running with it.
