View Full Version : What song is the biggest suprise for you on IYD, in a good or bad way?

For me, it's Everybody Loves You. From that little snippet we heard months ago, I thought this song was going to be a boring A/C song, but it's definitely one of my favorites, if not my favorite right now. It's a huge suprise for me in great way.

Moonlight. Hands down. PRetty much the rest of the songs I knew nothing about (other than the snippets of Everybody Loves You and the Secret Love single)
I was thinking I was gonna BARF when I heard Moonlight, only because I know it was connected to Twilight. But as soon as the piano started... and she started singing, it was like the 1980's demos were finally being played and this GREAT song finally made its way out of the archives and was FINISHED.
Second is Ghosts are Gone... but i discuss my thoughts on this one in the Rumours board.

I couldn't agree with you more on Everybody Loves You! That snippet did NOT do it justice at all, it is such an incredible song!
Moonlight was also an awesome surprise, I couldn't figure out how Lady From the Mountain would be incorporated into the song.
Also, Annabel Lee sounds so much better than the demo....I love the chorus!
Still listening to everything....and loving it all!!!

You do really love Everybody Loves You, don't you? :)).
Hmm, probably Italian Summer. there's something so haunting about this song, i can't even explain it. It might not be my favorite track (but, for example, i'm not surprised by Wide Sargasso Sea or Moonlight because i just knew they were going to be epic), but i thought it will be one more painful ballad : i don't like HAEWAFY, the Highwayman, Love is, and even BATB at times, but this...this, my friend, is brilliant.
I can't even believe that Stevie wanted to retire after TISL, saying that she couldn't do anything better...

Am I the only person that thinks her vocals are stellar on this song. She sings hard and soft and there is just more variety in her voice that was sorely missing on other songs from other album. Love the note she hits at the end.

Biggest surprise for me is how brilliant "Annabel Lee" is in just above every way - vocally, lyrically and musically - compare to the original demo we heard. I cannot wait to hear what they've done with "My Heart"

I do. The beginning of the song is soo unexpected and there is sad tone throughout. I love the way it morphs. I mean getting to the chorus is such a suprise. I just love what they did with it and I can't believe I like it sooo much.

New Orleans! WOW I'm in love with this song. Great harmonies with the girls, and the song has cathartic & touching lyrics while the music is perfectly understated and builds beautifully. "I stare at my city"

Moonlight and Everybody Loves You!
I was sooooooooo nervous when I heard "Lady From The Mountain" was morphing into a new song. I have listened to it three times now and continue to get the chills every time! I want this feeling to last all day! I have been waiting for LFTM to have it's official introduction to the world for a long time now, at least to those unfamiliar with Stevie's demos.
When we got our first taste of the new album over a year ago, I was unimpressed with the "Everybody Loves You" snippit. Now it's ranking up there as one of the best for me!
It will be interesting to hear what the new version of "My Heart" sounds like once it's available to hear.

What I like so much about New Orleans is that it's not overly sappy or morbid. It's inspiring. It makes me want to go there.
Agreed about Everybody Loves You. Also, I'm surprised by how much Secret Love and Cheaper Than Free fit in the running order, as the bookends.

And, really, it's beautiful. "then he saiiiid"... This chorus breaks my heart.
Still, i don't like the phrase "she was so not that girl" :/. I'm happy that she used the lyrics from Not make believe, though, since it's one of my favorite songs...describes her relationship with Lindsey perfectly. Oh God, i'm already analyzing...

LOVING "Soldier's Angel." It's eerie. Stevie is best when she's being kinda eerie.
Personal favorites so far: Wide Sargasso Sea," "Moonlight," "Soldier's Angel," "Ghosts Are Gone," "You May Be The One," "Italian Summer."
There isn't a SINGLE bad track on this thing.

Here are my surprises:
"Wide Sargasso Sea" is much better than the snippet on the sizzle reel. I know lots of people liked the sizzle reel snippet but I thought it was the weakest song on there.
"New Orleans" is an *excellent* song that hasn't gotten much press yet, I was stunned by how good this was.
"Annabel Lee" also vastly surpasses its snippet on the sizzle reel.
"Secret Love" and "Cheaper Than Free" make great book-ends to this album. I think the album sequence actually enhances both of these songs somehow (I don't think they're weak songs at all, just not as jaw-droppingly great as other songs on the album).
"Moonlight" and "Italian Summer" aren't surprising to me because I expected them to be great and they absolutely are.

I'm absolutely in LOVE with Wide Sargasso Sea, Moonlight, Italian Summer & In Your Dreams. :] (Besides Cheaper Than Free & Secret Love which we've had for some weeks now).
& By i'm obsessed with Wide Sargasso Sea & Moonlight... I cannot stop playing them. I mean I love them all just because I love everything that comes out of Stevie's mouth. & I'm suprised A LOT by Annabell Lee. I never really like the demo & I didn't care for her putting it on IYD but now i'm so glad she did.
..... I still haven't pre ordered this yet! I think today is the last day, so I'm def gonna have to take my Dad's credit card tonight and buy it!

New Orleans is the biggest surprise for me. LOVE it and was not expecting to. I agree that the lyrics are just great on this album. Other favorites are Ghosts are Gone (I have an almost 4 yo and a 10 month old and they were rocking out, lol) & You May Be the One. I'm really pretty impressed with the whole thing though!

Speaking as someone who's loved the Annabel Lee demo for years, this version has me beaming. I absolutely love it. It has all the elements I loved from the demo yet is different enough that I can still enjoy the demo for what it was. But this has definitely jumped up to one of my all time Stevie songs. I'm really out of control right now. I can't wait to have this CD on my ipod so I can play it all the time.

Moonlight definately. Lady From the Mountain is one of my favourite songs of all time, and I was dreading to hear it in a 'Twilight' context. But I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. To my ears, it's absolutely perfect.

My biggest surprise in a bad way is that I'm not really digging Wide Sargasso Sea, and I really thought I would from the sizzle reel! I like it but I'm just not feeling it like I was :/
And in a good way it's that literally EVERY song on the album is good. There isn't a single filler song imo, they're all really solid... so awesome.

Biggest surprise for me is "Soldier's Angel". It was like a time warp that took me back in time to 1973 and then back again to the present. Crazy good, moving. A true statement song.
But the entire cd is mind blowing. Amazing.

The title track itself is probably the one that surprised me most. I thought it would be either sarcastic or wistful, but it's neither! It really just out of my headphones and made me sit up and pay attention!
Am I the only person that thinks her vocals are stellar on this song. She sings hard and soft and there is just more variety in her voice that was sorely missing on other songs from other album. Love the note she hits at the end.
I agree -- it sounded eerily like something from Bella Donna. For a moment I wondered if they were using an old tape  It's a very pretty effect.

OK, every song is good, but there are a few incredible ones for me on this CD, songs that I see ranking in my Top 10 Stevie works (solo and FM):
"For What It's Worth" Sad but heartfelt with a standout vocal. This one edges close to Dylan territory in good ways.
"In Your Dreams" Very catchy and danceable. Great pop song with a killer tempo.
"Ghosts Are Gone" One of her best rockers, ever. I think should have been the CD title as the lyrics speak volumes as to where she is now, full-throttle ahead!

on my second listen now (definitely in Stevie-Land right now) LOL.
I like every song......Cheaper than Free perhaps the least.
standouts for me:
You May Be The One-great mid tempo bluesy/rock song (something about it reminds me of the Eagles, in particular Witchy Woman, can't put a finger on it yet though)
For What It's Worth-Brilliant and Beautiful
Ghosts Are Gone-awesome

Soldier's Angel. It shocked me. It brought both my partner Jimmy and I to tears. It was so, so very powerful.
I have to admit that I was expecting something very sentimental and weepy. But this song is so raw and unflinching. She's a soldier's angel alright... with a halo of thorns. And she relishes the pain of every prick. It is very reminiscient of those final American Johnny Cash albums...

I can't pick one or two or five. There are so many songs on this album that i'm already obsessively in love with.
I guess the biggest suprise is that I've pretty much forgotten about Secret Love. I'm now skipping over it as I'm listening to this album over and over. Don't get me wrong, i loved the song when it was all we had, but all those critics are right. Secret Love is probably ranked in the bottom half, if not bottom three. At least for me.
I keep playing FWIW and Moonlight over and over again. If i had to pick those are my favs for now. ALthought Italian Summer and Ghosts are Gone are not far behind. I"m sure in a few hours something else will peak at the top of my list.

That's kind of what I thought too... Just because everyone wanted it to be so good.
I've been listening to this all evening... Moonlight, Annabel Lee, Ghosts are Gone, In Your Dreams... So many great tracks, like someone said earlier, there really isn't a bad song on this! Each track is just musically interesting, some are really LONG and epic and filled with a lot of great lyrics, not simple songs at all... and I love how they change or start off as one thing and end as another. Italian Summer still gets me... I think it's the violins and the build up.. beautiful...
Very happy... I think Annabel Lee was probably the biggest surprise, it just keeps on giving and giving.. it's excellent! Liked the demo, didn't love it.. but I really like what they've done with this. The others except for Secret Love & Cheaper Than Free I had no reference point with Dave Stewart to even sort of figure out what they would sound like..
Actually, one other thing that's surprising is I don't hear Sharon and Lori a lot in the songs except for a few where they stand out.

I think it's obvious now that putting out "Secret Love" and "Cheaper Than Free" earlier is part of what's called a "slow roll-out". There are so many much stronger songs still left to come out that's breath-taking (and I *like* "Secret Love" and "Cheaper Than Free" a lot). But these are stronger: "For What It's Worth", "In Your Dreams", "New Orleans", "Moonlight", "Everybody Loves You", "Wide Sargasso Sea", "Italian Summer"....and those could all be singles.

Everybody Loves You and Moonlight were the biggest surprises for me.
I thought Everybody Loves You would be a very romantic ballad; in the veins of Love Is, but I'm so pleased to have been wrong. It becomes a completely different beast when she sing "Don't come here again"
From what we heard of Moonlight in the sizzle reel, I had no idea how she'd incorporate Lady From The Mountains into the song, it was the song I was most worried about. So when that piano started... I was all happy. It's beyond beautiful that the song basically IS LFTM with a chorus added.

Moonlight: Though the start is really promising, I think LFTM didn't need that chorus at all. Maybe I've heard the old demos too many times, but I think she ruined a beautiful song. :(

I also prefer the raspy-voice demos to the release, whose chorus does feel conspicuously posted onto the verses. However, her light vocal (and Sharon's & Lori's) & the strong verses are still enough to make the release pretty great, I think. When I think of a ruined demo, I still think of Smile at You. To my ears Moonlight is much better than that one.

the second coming of Stevie Nicks?
The Easter week leak makes so much sense now
Well I have to say this is one of Stevie's more consistent efforts, with the greater percentage of songs really hitting the mark for me. The only track that simply doesn't work (in my opinion) is "Wide Sargasso Sea". I dislike the lyrics; there is no discernable melody; the instrumentation is stodgy and Stevie's vocals seem a little shaky to me. I'm not wild about the title track (too much guitar) and "Soldier's Angel" (embarrassing lyrics), but I still think they're worthy of inclusion.

I think yesterday was one of my best music experiences ever, not only because of the album, but because of being able to share my opinion and to hear your opinions. This album is a masterpiece and other people are feeling it to... the whole experience is great.
Agreed.
My partner can't stand Stevie, and even blamed her Cheaper Than Free video for making him sick. I asked him to watch it with me and he was sick the next day.
But in all seriousness, it's great to have other fans to share this experience with. No one else is going to 'get it' the same way all of you do!

Solider's Angel was the biggest surprise for me. I thought it was going to be a soft ballad, but it makes sense that she chose something grittier. I don't find myself listening to it much beyond the release of the album, but it is an intriguing song. It kind of reminds me of Street Angel.
The album doesn't really flow well for me, it has this rambling quality, a disconnect between and music and lyrics, that's a little distracting. But there are a handful of songs that I really like: Secret Love, Annabel Lee, Italian Summer, and You May Be The One.

And it's interesting that although the songs fit into at least 5 different genre categories that they all seem to fit together. It doesn't sound like a a mish mash of dissonant tracks. There is a certain uniformity, despite the variety. An eclectic, tight meld of mood and theme. Michele

I'm surprised by how much I love Everybody Loves You. The clip we got ages ago sounded pretty awful, honestly. What is amazing about the song is how much goes on--where it takes us. Starting with the techno beginning, moving onto the strings on the bridge, then the guitar solo... The chorus is catchy and the lyrics of the verses are decent. And it all works.
Also, I'm over-all surprised by how fresh and vital the album is. For a long time I've thought of Stevie as pretty creatively stagnant. Thank god I was wrong...or thank you to Dave and whomever else helped light that fire under her ass.

Biggest surprise to me is that she's singing "cahn't" in Everybody Loves You, instead of "can't."
Is it really that noticeable? as a Brit myself, I'm not noticing it at all. I find it quite fascinating/hilarious that it sticks out so much for non-Brits

For me, it's Italian Summer. The earlier snipits had me very interested but once i actually heard it ? Oh my, it's dug it's claws in and i can't stop listening. I am very surprised because i thought for sure it would be Annabel Lee ( duh ! ) lol. I do love AL but there's just something about the descriptiveness of IS that i can't shake. The emotion in her voice, the beauty of the music, everything !! Epic, just epic !

Right now it's New Orleans. Her mentioning Anne Rice and the vampires put a grin on my face. I've been a fan of Anne's for probably longer than I should. Considering how deliciously graphic her books can be, I'm not sure a kid should have been reading them.

And last year I was in New Orleans for a DeLorean get together... so I was able to combine DeLoreans and Anne Rice as well! I just had to snap a picture of my friend Bill's car in front of Anne's house while we were there:

For me, it's Everybody Loves You. From that little snippet we heard months ago, I thought this song was going to be a boring A/C song, but it's definitely one of my favorites, if not my favorite right now. It's a huge suprise for me in great way.
I have to agree~I thought the same thing that this would be boring but I love it♥

I had some tredipidations about New Orleans and Soldiers Angel but that washed away after hearing them New Orleans in partucualr is classic.Italian Summer is one I reserved opinion on until hearing the entire song and I have to say I love it.The song reminds of Roxy Music's brilliant "A Song For Europe" it is that good IMHO.

I thought Everybody Loves You would be a very romantic ballad; in the veins of Love Is, but I'm so pleased to have been wrong. It becomes a completely different beast when she sing "Don't come here again"
Me too! I didn't even consider that "everybody loves you" could be followed by "but..."
The Easter week leak makes so much sense now
Another surprise for me was the line "even though they were so in love, they drew a line in the sand, just because". It was spoken in the sizzle reel, which I liked but didn't love. When she sang in the song itself, it took me by surprise because it gave it a completely different flavour each time.

actually, my biggest surprise is that i've been moved to tears on more than a few songs!! she's singing with such emotion on this album...that i connect deeply.. i don't think i've done that on a RECORDING of hers since Has Anyone.... hearing her sing things LIVE it can be a different story but... it's weird to me because lyrically some of her songs since RAL SHOULD have moved me to tears but her delivery just didn't for me!! it's almost like she saved it all up and threw it all on this album!!

I like that "just because" line and the way it captures the feeling that there's no rational reason why people who love each other can't be with each other and just keep fighting for no particular reason.
Another line I like is in FWIW where he says, "even if I left my girlfriend . . . " I mean, the lyric doesn't form a full, logical sentence. It ends with "for what it's worth," but doesn't fill in the blanks and tell us what will happen if he leaves his girlfriend and they get together. It's like she's only giving us a snippet of their conversation and maintaining the intimacy and privacy of everything else that was said, everything else that transpired between them.
It's a rather straightforward song, especially with the country slant, but there's something that's she's still withholding and safeguarding and that pulls me. The "even if" suggests to me that even when he made the suggestion he knew the relationship wouldn't/couldn't last and so did she. But they went off on their brief adventure anyway. Michele

I've got a few:
When I first heard "Soldier's Angel" I was dreading it being one of those tepid songs that make you cringe when you hear Stevie talk about how important it is to her. It's more straightforward than her usual fare, but the interplay between her and Lindsey is so great in my opinion.
When I heard the description of "In Your Dreams" as being up tempo and catchy, I thought it might be a crass, unsuccessful attempt to write a radio friendly pop number (ala "Love Changes" on TISL), but it's almost a happy version of "Fall From Grace." And it's such a great song that it's ALREADY burned a hole in my soul. It was playing in my head all morning and most of the afternoon today.
After I heard Stevie mention "Ghosts Are Gone" as being a "crazy rock and roll song" I still had visions of it being some kind of witchy ballad that would make me question what Stevie was thinking when she described it as rocking. However, that song definitely proved her right and the song took on a deeply personal meaning for me (already!).
The biggest disappointment for me is "Cheaper Than Free" which I think does not belong on this record. It's like a throwaway track. "My Heart" or something else Stevie wrote should have replaced it, especially since it was on The Blackbird Diaries. Next to it (relatively speaking) is "For What It's Worth."

That's an interesting choice of word, but perfectly apt! In spite of the gothic decadence thing that runs through the whole thing, it isn't heavy handed or oppressive at all.
Even though I love them, I find Muse very hard to listen to because their albums are SO intense. Sometimes it's just too demanding for me! But IYD isn't like that, not even the darkest tracks.

I'm so happy to see you enjoyed it so much! This album has really been the biggest surprise. The depth and commentary contained within are just so incredibly thought provoking, and for me, utterly unexpected. For me the album gets better and unfolds with every listen too.
Speaking of bawling, I've probably listened to the album more than a dozen times and I STILL cry every single time I hear Soldier's Angel. It reminds me of how terrified I was the night the US invaded Iraq. Of how vicious pitbull Kathy Griffin completely dissolved and broke down visiting Walter Reed (even Iraq itself didn't shake her cool). And here apparently Stevie has been doing rounds at Walter Reed and Bethesda for years. Makes you wonder how many of our elected officials do this? For me, that's powerful imagery. It's not just the political aspects of this song that move me, the harmonies between Stevie and Lindsey alone are enough to bring me to my knees. I'd begun to think they'd lost their musical connection and magic. But this song was a reminder that it's still very much there and very strong.

Hi kids,
I guess I am more of a lurker than a poster but I figured this occasion was cause to post -- I usually post on Courtney Love's old board, Kittyradio, which doesn't say much about me ... but I digress. I really love this site, and I should probably interact more, but I love reading all of the gossip and reading people's opinions. Good stuff here, for sure!
I had had my copy of IYD since Saturday -- a local record store in the city where I live always jumps the gun and puts new albums out on the weekend. I have to say, I really love this album. I liked it at first, but after a weekend of play, I am in love. Sure, there are some spots that are just ok, but for the most part, it's really what I, as a fan, always hope for in new material.
There are three big surprises that I have found in the last 48 hours:
1. In Your Dreams is catchy as hell, and while at first (and after reading the accolades here) I wasn't sold on it, I totally get it now.
2. You May Be the One is really feels like new terrain for Stevie -- at least I think so -- and it's really strong!
3. Italian Summer ... I kind of brushed this off earlier in the weekend, thinking it was a bit corny. But this morning as I was making my commute, I heard it loud and clear through my car's speakers and by the last, beautiful, I literally did this dorky fist bump "yeah Stevie" thing. I really loved that. And I love how the music just trails off after that.
I've loved Stevie since I was a kid watching her on that damn treadmill on MTV, and hearing this record has been like getting a call from an old friend. I know that's really cheesy but it's given me a giddy kick that has overridden my usually mature, adult facade.
I just needed to get that out so I could continue on with my day. haha

I'm surprised how much more I like Cheaper than Free in the context of the whole album, it just fits and it's the perfect closer.I so agree with you on this. I liked the video but didn't care too much for the song, but on the album it works beautifully, especially after the epic sound of "Italian Summer". Has anyone ever noticed that we've never gotten that many" happy in love" love songs from Stevie? Most of her songs have been about losing love or about the break-up of a relationship. It's nice to hear her sing a song about the joy and happiness of being with that special person. I listen to this song and it makes me wish I were with someone now.

That snippet is what made me think the song was going to be terrible. I'm still surprised at how much I like it.

Ok, so I will come out and admit it. I'm really, really enjoying Everybody Loves You. I thought the clip we got from Dave was the most abysmal thing I'd ever heard Stevie make. But the song itself really has some wings. I still think the chorus is pretty cliche and terrible, but the verses are just fantastic. And I think Stevie's voice on the verses is just so supple and beautiful. I even kinda like the synth thing the song has going. Soldier's Angel shocked me how good it was... Everybody Loves You simply surprised me at it's quality haha!

I really liked every single song--the only weak one was "Cheaper Than Free." All the others? A+. Lots of diversity, but pure Stevie Nicks through and through. This is probably her finest album.
I'm surprised I bought IYD on the release date and that I even liked it. I assumed it would be too adult contemporary for my tastes :sorry:, but I can't stop listening to Moonlight and For What It's Worth.
