We were actually just talking about this in another thread. The amount of long songs and total album running length both excites and terrifies me. When Stevie's long songs are good, they're utterly epic (think of Tusk). But when they're bad, they come across as overly self indulgent (Wild Heart, in my opinion). Like was another topic of recent conversation, the success of Stevie's songs hinges on who she's working with. It's still kinda unforeseen at this point if working with Dave was good for her music or not.

I'm frightened:eek: I hate the fact that she can't make shorter albums. Long albums don't work for her....i'm sorry. Hold me:eek::eek:

I'm surprised "Ghosts are Gone" is so long. We know that track is a rocker. I'm sure IYD is the next single because its just under 4 minutes.

Does it bug anyone else that it isn't called THE Ghosts are Gone, but just Ghosts are Gone? Maybe I am just strange, but it just sounds incomplete.

What's wrong with overly self indulgent?
;)
But I'm seriously excited for this. After listening to Cheaper than Free I felt as thought it was much too short, compared to other Stevie songs.
I'm a big fan of the >5 minute songs :)

Yes it does, and I assumed I was the only one that would notice so I never brought it up. Some titles work well with "the" as the kicker first word (think "The Chain" as opposed to "Chain" and even this forum, "The Ledge" as opposed to simply, "Ledge"). As a songwriter I'm aware of the rhythm and meter of a phrase. "Ghosts are Gone" translates to, "TUM-tum-tum". I much prefer, "ta-TUM-ta-TUM". Thank you for bringing my attention to this again now, and for introducing me to my new favorite word which you used in a prior post, "frackin". I'll get plenty of mileage of that this lifetime!

Not one song on TISL is over 5 minutes...
...and that is one LOOOOONG ablum.
ETA: Also, no Stevie song is over 5 minutes on SYW. In fact, only the "epic" "Come" is over 5 (clocking in at 6:00). That means Stevie "Comes" EIGHT times on this ablum.

I'm glad to see WSS turned out to be long, since it was my fave of the teaser clips. I'm trying to keep my mind occupied and not think about this album too much, because the time is KILLING me!!!

These are all on the longer side, wow.
I'm pretty happy! I generally love Stevie's drawn out songs.
Plus, I can't say that I've ever disliked a song because of it's length... rather, I usually wish the songs I love could go on for longer! So if I don't like it, I don't like it... and if I do I'll have plenty to listen to!

I'm afraid of that too. I hope they aren't rambly songs....maybe they're just lyrically dense?
I just hope it won't be slow á la Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now"

Since the CD is being referred as Bob Dylan-ish in some ways, that means a few songs could ramble a bit, which is just fine if it's good music.

But you like "Storms" and "Beautiful Child?" ;)
Me, I like 'em all. The windswept epics, the ballsy rockers, the stark confessionals, the light pop tracks, and the grand (or sappy, depending on your point of view!) ballads.

I love the long Stevie songs. And besides, how can you *really* react to a song that you've never heard just based on its length? The people on here freaking out cuz some songs are over 5 mins. are hilarious.

Stevie's song always run long .That how I like music. As you guys know by now I like softrock music and country music.I never got into heavy rock music as most of my friends did.I do like Stevie's tunes with a little meat on them to get my old blood moving in me.I do love "Cheaper Then Free" I hope that tune goes somewere.3:38
is a ok song lenth for radio .also Secret Love at 3:15 is great for radio.Sometimes radio does shy away from longer tunes. I hope this CD gets good airplay for Stevie. I hope they play the crap out of it.I dont know how many more she can record. The next probably with the boys of FM.And we dont know how many more they will record after if they recocrd next year.

Personally, I love longer songs! I am soooooooo excited, I can't wait til May 3! I also ordered the "limited fan edition" from Warner Bros., so I can get the extra track. I may just be a new fan of Stevie's, but I'm making up for (a lot of!) lost time with passion :wavey:

I like the longer songs too, I was just very surprised that so many of them are so long. A radical departure!
I've always loved Stevie's "epic" longer songs, but I am a little concerned about the lack of editing in relation to this album. Whilst I've always been on board with Dave's involvement, the "poetry reciting" approach to the lyric writing has troubled me from the moment I read about it. Of course, it always depends on the song and two tracks from Trouble In Shangri-La are a case in point - "Planets Of The Universe" shouldn't have been edited as the single long version is superior, whilst "Fall From Grace" benefitted from the removal of some rather embarrassing, longwinded lyrics as heard in the demo version. I do remember that Stevie stated in an interview last year that she had commented to Dave upon playback of the sessions that the songs were generally quite long and that he had assured her the editing process would take care of things, but perhaps not...

Having heard the album now I really have to LMAO at the person who said they were "afraid" that the album would be bad just from knowing the song lengths alone.

The song lengths will keep it off radio, without them releasing a radio-edit version. But it plays extremely well on the CD.
