I really, really hope not. Stevie has said over and over again that one of the reasons she is so adverse to technology and new forms of promotion is because things like this can happen. If the album has been leaked it will just confirm all her suspicions and may sour her on doing another album within the next few years!

I'm betting that's a clever marketing trap. It demands all of this personal, private info and it won't let you trick it with fake phone numbers, etc. I'm sure as heck not giving out that info to some faceless website!

Genius idea if it's a marketing move!

This might be true if even obscure critics in Ohio have copies to review..but it seems like you still might have to be a computer geek to find it.

No, but I did a search and a ton of links came up. Most likely what is going on is that the album is shipping already and people who have the album (stock room people etc) are swiping a copy. OR if there are promo copies, those are being posted. I had the promo of TISL a month before the actual release.

BombaySapphire3

This album has had a much much tighter lid on it than TISL or SYW .I had a promo copy of TISL by the second half of March 2001 with no industry connections at all.It is getting down to the wire here though.

I kind of expected that with this album. Gone are the days of press packets being sent out with a copy of the album and press kits. Also Stevie isn't out promoting it prior to it's release so for all intents and purposes no one has a copy. But the timing is right for the album to making an appearence. I expected a week or so before it's release it would pop up online.

I managed to download the "album", and it's packed in a password protected rar file. Does anyone know how to open the thing? I'll upload the file if anyone is willing to try to open it.

Thrown_Down
04-21-2011, 09:38 AM
I don't think I would. It's either a virus or a red herring in my opinion, or else why make you jump through so many hoops to get it. I'm not convinced.

10milestereo

^The password protected rar file is a very common hoax. It's pretty safe to assume that any files asking for a password or a survey to be completed before access is a fake.

I found the same thing, but the site won't let me download the .rar file that contains the password unless I become a premium member or wait 30 minutes.

What is in there, if not the album? Just an empty folder? It says it was uploaded on 2/20/11, which seems really early - you'd think if it had leaked that early, more people would have it/know about it.

It most likely has a bunch of fake mp3 files that you can't access without a password anyway. There have been multiple rar files like this for the upcoming Kate Bush album.

But how are they fake mp3 files? Just mp3 files that are dead air? Or did somebody record themselves saying "Sucker!" or something?

I don't know. I remember Madonna getting press for having recorded herself saying 'Stop stealing my f@^&*ing music' and uploading it to the internet just before her American Life album was released, so stranger things have happened.

Dead air or just a bunch of mp3s of previously released songs, which people who have no lives like to speed up and slow down and such. I don't know why people bother doing it, but they do.

Didn't we have leaked tracks from TISL a few weeks before its release?

The radio stations should get their advanced copies of IYD anytime now and start playing tracks by this Friday. Thats my guess.

Do your computer a favour.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS.

The rar links NEVER work because it is impossible to ever get the password for them. Advertisement companies pay websites to set up these links so people will give them their emails, personal info, etc.
Stevie is being amazingly protective of the album, but expect it about a week before the release date should it ever leak. Torrent sites such as btjunkie or piratebay will have it by then should it even leak.
Stevie shouldn't worry about album sales because of that though. It seems Mr. Paul Simon did quite well on the charts even though his album was leaked a week before.
Fingers crossed.

Nearly every major album released these days gets leaked prior to it's release. The question is do you want to take the risk of getting a possible virus by downloading them?

estranged4life

I would avoid the 'leak' downloads available online, nothing more than adware and phishing scams.

Btw, Just to humor myself, I just checked the 'leak' download file sizes (.mp3 format), definitely 'something' you don't want to download.

I will end up with muliple copies as well, have for all of the albums. Even though I'd had the promo of TISL for at least a month before it was released, I still went out first thing to pick the album up. I don't buy them just to have a bunch of copies though there is always a reason why I have so many.
Speaking only for TISL, I ended up with two promo copies and two commercially released versions. One I bought the day of release, the other was the selection of the month for Columbia House Record Club and I let them send it as well, that one has never been opened only because I have no reason to open it. I have an unopened copy of Street Angel as well (for that album I have 2 commercial copies, 1 promo copy and 1 import version).

Because those fans have shelled out the $17-34 for the preorder and WB continually withdraws the money from their account on a whim before they shipped the product. Not to mention WB steals 40% of the revenue where Stevie only gets about 10% per album sold. Illegal pirating is not going anywhere, and despite the fact that record sales are down, tickets and merch are way up. The music industry as a whole is growing, but WB has iced Stevie's glass and filled it with their Kool-Aid. They have convinced her that the music industry is FAILING and filled her with fear, when actually the music industry is doing well, it is the fat cat record labels that are failing. With the current technology, artistd no longer need labels and it is time Stevie listened to the rain.

We all know that Stevie is disappointed by the album sales. I believe that if things were different, she wouldn't put out a new album every 10 years. Realizing that you are not the mega-giga-superstar you once were must hurt. I love her, and I love her music, so if I can help her feel better, like she did many times for me, I will. This is also the first time my mom showed some interest in Stevies music, and over the years I got so much beautiful music from my friends that it's just natural I bought a copy for them too.

If Stevie would record albums more frequently, her sales would likely be greater than they are for the one-off album every 7-10 years. As it is now, people forget she exists in between albums. She does herself a disservice by letting the fans forget.

I'm not saying she'd have a string of multi-platinum albums; but just making the point that if she actually released new material with any sort of reliable frequency, her sales would be greater since each album release would boost the sales of prior releases. More releases=more opportunities for additional sales of prior releases.

Stevie has been getting terrible advice! Whoever told her to stop making music because no one would buy it is a terrible person. Clearly, none of her musical peers followed this advice so I'm not sure why she fell for it so readily.

You can "try before you buy" really easily by listening to snippets on iTunes. I do that all the time. It doesn't require illegal downloading.

I honestly think she's terrified of flops. Her ego can't handle not being a huge deal. She clung to that TISL glory for a long time.If this one isn't the huge success she's hoping for I wouldn't be surprised if she stops doing solo albums

In Stevie's case, I'm sad to say that only her diehard fans are going to buy the album on faith. The first single wasn't a huge success either.

But people my age may download it, even though it's illegal, realize they like it, and then buy her CDs.

That's what I did after all.

Hrm. I can't predict how the album will do as that seems very fluid, but I believe that "Every Day" off of Trouble In Shangri-La (which went Gold) peaked at #17 on Adult Contemporary while "Secret Love" has peaked so far at #19, so that's really not that bad.

There is a website I stumbled upon called Mediafiretrend.com. They have 4 different links up there for Stevie's album. The first one says Stevie Nicks In your dreams.iso and that link had 12, 584 downloads. The second link said Extra quality In your dreams which had 4,537 downloads. Then the third one said Hot Release In your dreams and that one had 5,362 downloads, and the fourth one said In your dreams with 12,297 downloads. Now personally I hope I am wrong about this but if this really is Stevie's album it is being downloaded by thousands of people. The bit torrent sites that I looked at had that album flagged as fake. So maybe someone from here on the ledge could go look at that website and see what you think. It's okay dear, it's actually an ad that you saw for another downloading site. I went and checked. It's fake, meant to get you to subscribe to one of those monthly download sites.

And also downloads doesn't mean loss record sales. It could actually help her reach people of my generation who don't have a clue who she is. I downloaded some of her albums and loved them so much that I bought.

Had the downloads not been available, she would have loss out on the sales of her albums to me, and to others I have recommenced her to. Someone needs to inform her of that aspect of them.

This exactly. Recorded music is not necessarily the cash cow product anymore. Illegal downloading should not be feared, but embraced. Even if millions of people illegally download the album, it means millions of people are listening to it. If people are listening to it and liking it, chances are they will go out and buy some of her albums, or atleast some merch or a concert ticket. It is shocking that the album has not leaked yet. As everyone else has said, they really are keeping a tight lid on this one.

However, it would be nice to be able to stream a preview for each song on iTunes. I believe this to be the fault of WBR tho, because Emmylou Harris has her album coming out next Tuesday (the 26th) and you can't hear song previews from her album either on iTunes or Amazon.

If they aren't liking it, then do you blame them for not buying it in the first place?

But I can feel it in my bones. It's gotta leak soon. I hope.

I really hope NPR/WB do this with Stevie next week. NPR streamed Adele, PJ Harvey & REM the week before their respective new releases recently. I think it's really good marketing. It gives new listeners & casual fans a much better chance to grasp the whole presentation, as opposed to song clips which can be jarring.

This is completely illogical. If millions of people download her music illegally, why on Earth would they then go and *buy* her albums? You're arguing that one behavior is going to lead to the opposite behavior which doesn't really make much sense. If they're unwilling to purchase music in the first place, I don't see how stealing music will inspire them to NOT steal music.

I just think if you're an actual fan you would want to buy the music both to keep the artist continuing to record and simply out of respect that this is their trade and they should be paid for it.

I know I personally cannot identify with song clips one iota. I think you nailed it, they're just jarring. I detested the Secret Love clip, but when I heard the full song for the first time it literally moved me to tears. I remember hearing the clip for Love Changes before TISL was released, and abhored it too. But when I heard the whole song I adored it, and thought it was quirky and fun.

I stole her music first and then was inspired to buy it to get her to make more.

I have no problem admitting that. I illegally downloaded alot of my favorite artists music before buying it. And I now own all of Stevie's music as well as theirs. It actually does happen, even if it doesn't make sense.

It's the not the same thing. I've actually got a lot of people into Stevie, who have also BOUGHT her stuff. I am ashamed that that's how I started, however I didn't have unlimited funds to support someone who is already rich and hopes to get richer. I do have more money now and I'm positive I repaid an equal or greater amount then I lost her.

If an artist is really in it for the music, like Stevie says she is, then they should be glad they're album made the amount it did, whether then going all crazy about the amount they 're losing. Because illegally downloaded or not, the music is getting listened to and appreciated.'

However I honestly don't think that Stevie loses all that much from what it whatever she thinks. Most people my age don't know who she is, and we're the ones who download for the most part.

And it's not the same as your example, because when I illegal downloaded her work, she lost one sale, and then I bought it she gained one .Your example involves the restaurant losing two meals and getting paid for one. It's not the same.

There is a Dutch saying like: 'Opportunity makes the thief', so as long is at is very very easy just to download anything you like, this will be a thing which cannot be diverted.

Besides that, before the internet you went to the recordstore, listened to a bunch of albums, read reviews, listened to the radio and bought the CD/LP's you really wanted.

Nowadays everything is available online (and for free) and lot's of people just download stuff, just to 'have it' and never listen to it. Fot sure they never would have bought it! So, from that poimt of view, the artists don't loose money. The real hard-core fans of any particular artist will buy a release somehow anyway. So I really think that any artist hardly will 'miss' a huge amount of money due tot the downloadingscene, only their work is listened to and isn't that what any perfomrer or artists wants? Not all have Frank Zasppa's credo 'We are only in it for the money'. supplBesides that, an artist hardly make any money from albums-sales. Lot's of profits goes to 'the industry'. The money is in publishing-rights and made with ticketsales for concerts.

The thing about downloading that I don't understand is how is this any different than cassette copies people made in the 70's and 80's? The only difference today is you reach a much broader audience. I also don't think the person downloading the album should be the bad guy but rather the person posting and the site hosting it should be.
I know the argument is that it takes money away from the artist and label etc. But so does buying a used cd. It's perfectly fine for me to go buy a cd, decide I don't like it turn around and sell it on eBay or at a used record store. Artist and label don't make any money there either.

I think you are forgetting the "average" music consumer here, because they are the ones that drive record sales, not the hardcore fans. Stevie does not have millions of hardcore fans, so in order for the record company to turn a profit, they need the sales of casual fans or people that may have read something about the album somewhere or saw her in concert with Rod and want to hear the album. Now if all of those people download instead of buy, Stevie and Warner have a problem.

And although I am sure she sees herself as an artist first, she IS also in it for the money, which is logical as it's her job and it costs money to record and promote an album.

I think this is an interesting subject (downloading music without paying for it). I feel like a reformed drug addict, because I used to download a lot of music on the original Napster, and then again on WinMX.

I've done a pretty good job of purging most of those downloads, though I'm sure I still have a few songs here and there.

Ultimately, downloading music without paying for it first is stealing. You can try to justify it any which way you choose, but if you were one of those unfortunate people who got busted by the attorneys for the RIAA, the judge you stood in front of would not care one tiny iota that you intended to purchase it later down the road, or that you pre-ordered it, or that you've since bought all of the artists albums after getting a free sample. Stealing is stealing, plain and simple, and music should not be treated any differently than any other product.

What is the general consensus about free downloading of music that you have already bought on vinyl LPs many years ago? You've already paid the artist for their work. But does that entitle you to an mp3 version for your iPod? How is this any different than buying a CD and then ripping it into mp3 files for your iPod today? IMHO, I feel that I am entitled to the mp3.

do it by a click on the mouse for free. Now if the leaks and after the release if everyones brother and sister do a mass hyjacking of her cd for free in the next couple of months ,She will be mighty pisted off and say this is it no more recording.Which I can't blame her.I hope this wont happen.Everyone has to just relax and wait until the 3rd.

I can't recall the name of the law, but it came around when cassette tapes were first introduced. it basically states that the end-user has the right to duplicate their media purchases for personal use.

It's perfectly legal for you to convert your records, tapes and CDs to a digital format and play them on your iPod, or to make mix-CDs for personal use.

It is not legal to take those digital files and make them available for others using the internet.

That's my understanding. Isn't there a Ledgie who works for the RIAA, or one of the major labels? I seem to recall there being someone here with industry connections who might be able to shed more light on the issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong but preodering it is buying first. It's buying real ahead of actually getting it. I think it would be more of a legal grey area there or at least should be. The thing is it's illegal now but it's actually a very useful tool and there are actually artists who support it because theyve realized that. And sometimes the artist or the label may be the ones who leak it for the press.

They just need to accept that the has changed.

No I'm saying that they need to start take ADVANTAGE of the hype that it gives their music in other ways. Some artists already have. Gaga's doing quite well (sold over 50 million albums in 2 years) despite being illegally downloaded. The difference is that she knows how to channel the new music business.

It's a lie that you can't still sell A LOT of music with the biz the way it is. You just have to know how to do it.

Digital music needs to be cheaper first. I shouldn't have to pay 14 dollars for a CD that has no packaging, and isn't physical. The record label is saving money but not passing it on to us. Why not?

These are great points, and very true.

When pre-ordering a CD, it would be nice to be able to go in and download the tracks, even if it wasn't ahead of the release date.

I still buy a lot of records, and I love when the record has a code that lets you download free MP3s, or sometimes there's even a CD inside the record jacket.

Digital music is overpriced when you consider there is no packaging and no transportation costs, but the price of maintaining the developers, servers and other equipment necessary to support an digital store are likely a considerable amount.

You've actually only paid for a *sound recording* of the artist's work, and you can certainly continue to enjoy that sound recording on the medium that you purchased.

However, if you want the advantages of having it on a CD or as an .mp3, you need to pay for that different format. Otherwise, continue listening to the vinyl LP, or figure out a way to convert what you paid for into a different medium for your own personal use.

No it's not considered "theft" to watch it on Youtube but the person who posted it there could be in trouble IMO.Usually the record companies get unwanted leaks removed pretty quickly from there.

So, in other words, it's okay if someone else downloads stuff illegally and then gives it to you? When you listen to music on YouTube that wasn't authorized by the artist or the label, then you are effectively abetting in the illegal practice of uploading copyrighted works. And whether you download something or merely stream it, it's the same thing.

Copyright is a sticky thing though. Stevie herself has ran into trouble with it hasn't she? Didn't someone sue her for stealing the chorus of Sara from a poem that they sent her?

And also what about demos? That's stealing as well. Especially considering that most of them are the same thing as the actual released product.

Listening to it on Youtube and downloading it aren't quite the same from a legal perspective though..That is how all those people got charged from those file sharing sites a few years back.I guess to listen or not is more an ethical dilemna..With Stevie's songs like most everyone else on here of course I'll buy the CD and more than one.

Yeah, right now there's technically a loophole as far as streaming's concerned, but that may change in the near future, according to this:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20043421-281.html

• The White House is concerned that "illegal streaming of content" may not be covered by criminal law, saying "questions have arisen about whether streaming constitutes the distribution of copyrighted works." To resolve that ambiguity, it wants a new law to "clarify that infringement by streaming, or by means of other similar new technology, is a felony in appropriate circumstances."

I was dancing around this thread - afraid to enter and find the album had been leaked and I would download it.. I'm trying to be good.. but the closer it gets before "In Your Dreams" drops, the harder it's getting. its the mystery of the remaining 7 songs that I haven't even heard a second of.. and finally hearing the complete versions of Moonlight, Annabelle Lee, and Italian Summer...

but alas, the topic was just about "what would you do if the album leaks" I'll confess that I would probably download and listen.. whether wrong or right.. but I'm starved for new Stevie..

p.s. I did pre-order from Warners, along with pre-ordered the deluxe version from Itunes.. so I wouldn't feel too guilty.

last note.. if In Your Dreams is great than alot of folks will end up buying it. I did that with Adele's new cd.. listened to the clips from Itunes of "21" and downloaded the album when I got to track 5.. I knew..

I'll be honest, if it leaked, I'd download it and listen to it anyway. I'm going to buy the album when it comes out, so it's not as if I'm negatively effecting Stevie's income or whatever.

I'm in the camp of "will download first and buy if he likes it" I did it with Stevie and the Mac at first, I did it with Blondie, and more recently, done it with Adele, Lady GaGa and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Downloaded all their CDs and then went out and bought them all anyway. Illegal downloading happens, it will always happen. Instead of whingeing about it, they should try and do more to combat it or utilise it. Let people download albums free for a month, and then pay if they want to keep them on iTunes, lower prices, etc. For every person who adamantly won't download - and good for you, I say - there will always be those who will.

The post that started this thread turned out to be a false alarm, but that shouldn't have been posted here either, in case it had been a legitimate download of the album.

Once the album is released and commercially available, do not post any links to the music. If Reprise wants to give us additional free previews, that's great. Otherwise, no posting of links to music that should be paid for.

I was just thinking about this today. If I'm going to buy the iTunes version, plus, the fan version, plus, whatever else, THIS ALBUM BETTER BE GOOD and BETTER NOT BE LEAKED. If its leaked, that's going to spell disaster. If the album does good, she can use that for further promotion.

It's always uncertain if the album will leak before the release date, if the promo copies are in the right hands there's a very slim chance of it happening but ya never know. Unfortunately AFTER it is out is when most of the leaks go crazy. People upload copies to filesharing sites and it all goes from there.

Personally I try to download music for free the least I can (unless it's a bootleg show. unofficial material etc.). As always the main artists I am into get my full support as do the ones I don't listen to as much but still consider a 'favorite'. I do tend to try music before I buy it though in some form or another, luckily there are sites/software out there that let you listen to full albums legally to avoid the downloads as much as possible. Rhapsody, Spotify, hell even MySpace are great sites for it.

Yeah when Napster was popular I, along with many others I expect, used it as a public library. If I liked most of what I heard on an album I would go buy a physical copy to support the artist. If i didnt like it most likely it was deleted from my computer. I think the record industries hard stance against downloading had a more negative effect than the actual downloading did on sales. This is JMHO, but werent cd sales quite high during napster's heyday?

I noticed when I first read about this "leak" I got so excited I thought I'd need a Depend undergarment! When I ordered from Warners before, I got the shipment 3 days before the official release date. I have a feeling we'll be getting copies a little early... or it's just wishful thinking!!!???

When I did the Warner Bros preorder for TISL I got my copy 3 days after the release date. :( That's why I didn't do it this time.

Three days isn't long to wait after release date. Spare a thought for those of us in places other than the US who, even though have preordered from Warners (fan edition) and amazon.com, have to wait for it to ship and so will likely not got it until a couple of weeks after the release date and can't go to a store and buy it. As for receiving it early - no chance! It will still be earlier than 27 June but The Ledge will be a tough place to be for me until I get my copy of the album!

Delaying the release in the UK is so pointless. Anyone who truly wants it will download it illegally. They certainly won't decide to buy a copy if they like it, because when it comes out six weeks later they'll either have lost interest in the record, or else lost the desire to do the right thing and pay for it.

I'm downloading the album from iTunes Monday Night at 12:01 (or early Tuesday morning). I can wait for My Heart, but I have to hear everything else as soon as possible.

Some artists already have. Gaga's doing quite well (sold over 50 million albums in 2 years)

Gaga has not sold 50 million albums. I think you mean singles.

She's sold over 51 million singles and around 15 million albums worldwide.

I really don't get the gaga thing. Or the Adele thing as a matter a fact. There is nothing new about their music, just imitations of the past. This generation needs to invent a new instrument or something. Same sounds and almost the same songs over and over again. It's like they are desperate for stars.

Yeah exactly. For instance Blondie is releasing a special f'n amazing fan pack version of their new album in the UK before the normal CD release everywhere, so everyone outside of the UK who ordered it including myself probably have to wait at least a week before getting it. It's going to be a tough wait for sure  but if it was only 2 or 3 days I wouldn't be as bothered.

I will just sit and wait.I could get a sneak listen from the Radio Promo copies that my friend Pete has available at the station that if he got them yet.but I can wait.I'm not going to bother him for this.I never pre-ordered a cd before.also I never stand outside in the rain and waiting to get into a store to go and buy a cd before.I never did that for tickets for a concert to that matter.I love Stevie and her tunes.but I guess I'm old and slow.I dont like the Idea of downloading a cd of hers from Itunes or Amazon.I rather get that little silver thingy in my hands with the tiny print insert cards that I cant see without a magnafind glass.I love to see this ina vinyl .
