I think this song is absolutely fantastic, and I rediscovered it after it popped up on my itunes shuffle today.

I love the whole idea behind this song, how it was never used on an album (other than enchanted) but was performed back in '81, which sounded absolutely fantastic.
I love almost everything about this song, and it really is one of my favorites, even though I had forgotten it for so long.

Anyone agree with me?

I love Gold & Braid. One of my absolute favorites, and I'll never understand how it never made it to an album (aside from Enchanted).

I very much enjoy this song musically... it's bopping and fun. But lyrically? I place it in the same self-congratulatory, disingenuously sappy, overly-inflated ego bin as I do the entire Wild Heart album. It'd be a cute, fun little song if I could get over the vapid lyrics. :)

Haha, we always differ on this issue. If I'm not mistaken you're more Rock A Little while I'm more Wild Heart?

But I love the lyrics:

"You see a pathway ending with a doorway
You slip toward the doorway
Been waiting there all day
All these years"

I have always loved this song Chris. Long before you were born this was a regular staple on my boombox but now I'd be content to just sit on your lap and listen to it through one of your earbuds while you listen to it through the other one.:xoxo:

P.S. don't hide behind Jilly's hair

There are several studio versions. I have at least 3. I'll upload when i get home from work. They're all from the Bella Gonna sessions I believe.

great song, should have been on an album, should have been a single. would make a nice re-make for someone. ALSO, would be a fun song for her to perform live (along with about 50 other songs that would be great), but we'll NEVER see that happen. Oh well.

Love G&B. I have a couple of outtakes where she's talking about Orson Welles, and one where there's kind of an echo-y voice effect at the beginning which I don't like, but it's the closest thing to a finished studio version I've ever heard. If somebody has one that's closer, I'd love to hear it. :)

Yeah, they all work, thank you so much!

Not knowing the conversation they were having, the Orson Welles/War of the Worlds references are pretty random. :p

The double tracked vocals on the vocal mix one are weird. Glad she took the 'wisdom of old' line out too. Sounded unnatural.

The last songs I posted are, as far as I know, the most (I know, gasp) cleaned-up versions available since I'd slowed it down to its proper speed and re-EQ'd and recorded it back in the day. Most versions out there spin so fast they make you dizzy and she sounds like Minnie Mouse. I was at that show and I've never seen such hysteria there or at any other show. During Edge (she did no walk) I think the coke was really starting to get to her since she was practically hallucinating that her fans were closing all around her like a glove, and she kept throwing a pointed finger at everyone shouting, "Stand Back! Stand BACK!"! The best part of this show is where she returns to the stage before HAEWAFY, profusely apologizing to the fans (after getting her butt blown with cocaine?), saying "I only get mad for about 5 minutes and then I'm not mad anymore!". She talks about how it all started for her in San Jose and then goes into the song HAEWAFY, which is really heartfelt and great. Sorry about the "butt jab" (no pun intended).

I remember seeing this concert on HBO when it first aired. It was around the time Stand Back was out (unless they were just repeating it to promote the new single) and I kept watching, hoping to hear Stand Back and Gypsy and being really bummed. I wasn't a huge Stevie fan yet, just starting out. Then years later I had this show on VHS in the late 80's when I was in college. I hooked up my VCR to my stereo and put Gold And Braid on a mix tape and played it to death! I was so excited when I saw the Enchanted box set had it on there and I kept thinking it was going to be an actual unreleased studio track. Then I was a little bummed that it was the live recording, but yet happy that I'd finally have a really good quality version of it on CD. Then I was really happy to find that it was remixed for the CD. I always thought in the video that Waddy's guitar solo was so loud in the mix and kind of dry that it stuck out a bit much, and it's mixed in rather nicely on the CD.

My favorite part of the video is where she throws the tambourine. I don't know why, it just seems to fit with the energy of the song. She does the kicks, flails the tablecloth (I mean shawl) around, then the breakdown with the butt dance, then the side to side banging of the tam, then she tosses it aside for a big finish. This is what a live performance is all about.

All right I'm normally intimidated by the Stevie board (there are always SO MANY people here and it seems so intense) but I have to say something about Gold and Braid.
I don't even know what...
Well, it's in my top 3 favorite Stevie songs. Like has been stated several times already, it definitely should have been on an album.
I have several different versions and I love them all. So fun to sing along to. It's one of those songs that gets stuck in my head for days after listening to it just once. I never get sick of it though. :)

I have a version of Gold And Braid labeled "Unreleased Studio"...It's seems to be a full studio version and it does not have the prominent guitar that the live version has...The vocals are similar to the live vers (Stevie rockin' out)...Time is 3:54...Pretty sure the link is buried in the "Demo's" thread somewhere...Does this sound familiar to anyone?I would up-load to mediafire and post a link but my internet is unbelievably slow...Does anyone have knowledge about wire-less Broadband?.I don't seem to be able 2 do better than 15 kb/sec

"Because I never did run from you, I never did not love you, in a dream I said to you I'd always love you." I love this song because of the HBO 1981 video and how energized she was before the Klonopin years. Vapid lyrics?

I agree, I like this song, very good. I also like the fact that it was never on an album, weird, huh?

I remember reading discussions about this song on The Ledge years ago before the song was actually released on Stevie's Enchanted Boxed Set. Some felt the song was called "Golden Braid" rather than "Gold & Braid." There are still some summary comments about the song:

I ripped my copy of the laserdisc and used the Chris Lord-Alge remix from Enchanted. Enjoy!

Tim

edit: OK, just noticed Youtube is squeezing the video unless you make it full screen. Wierd!

Thank you thank you thank you for this! This (without the squishing, of course) is what the whole thing would look like if they remastered it for DVD and remixed the whole concert. And watching it again after many years I never noticed the little Irish jig she does at the end. Priceless.

You know, since you've already ripped the entire lazerdisc, if you were to make it into an avi file (or some video file) and post it here for the fans to download you'd be a hero. I'd love to get ahold of it to burn into a DVD for my own private viewing, as I no longer have a VCR and my copy of the tape just sits in a box in my cupboard.

Her joke about "War of the Worlds" in the demo is because the guy recording the session (or maybe it was one of the musicians) was named Orson and she was making a joke about Orson Wells' famous radio show of War of the Worlds. Not quite as non sequitur as most people think. Can anyone back me up on this? I can't remember his full name.

In addition to the recordings that were posted in this thread there are a bunch of acapella tracks floating around. I don't know if they were created by pulling the vocals off of the demos or they were taken off the master tapes like that but I have them. I can upload them when I get home if you guys want them.

I always thought the demo with strange echo was fan made because it seems to be two separate takes layered together. Perhaps it's one fully recorded demo with one of the acapella takes layered on top of it. I like it a lot because it gives the whole thing a very full rich sound. But I don't think she ever recorded a demo that started off with her singing acapella. I think that was just something whomever made the mix did for fun. It would be interesting if this is true for the person who made it to come clean so we could know for sure.

I love to sing and always sing along with songs in my car. I love the ending to the live version of Gold & Braid so much that I've tacked it onto other songs. Most often the song Breathe by Frou Frou, especially one of the remixes because it's faster and carries the music from the final chorus longer. I just started singing it one day and it fit, so I always add it when I sing that song now.

Here is a very clean studio version that I am in love with:

The double tracked vocals on the vocal mix one are weird. Glad she took the 'wisdom of old' line out too. Sounded unnatural.

What part is that?
