I'm coming out the third for the Webster Hall show and was wondering if anyone has any hotel suggestions. I'm looking for something reasonably priced. I would have stayed at the Union Square Inn but it is booked! Maybe I'll try to call them.
There is a brand new hotel there called Hotel Verite that has a good rate. But I learned online that their "soft open" is today! So I am hesitant to make a reservation in case anything goes wrong and it is not still open in May.

I stayed at the Washington Square Hotel in Nov 08. It was priced right, clean and comfortable. It is not new, but well maintained and the rooms have a 1920's feel that is Art Deco. Close to public trans and walking distance to Union Square. The room I stayed in is not listed on the site, a single occupant twin bed. If I recall it was around $150 a night.
I found it after purchasing a cheaper hotel I found on Trip Advisor. When I got to the other hotel it SMELLED, had scary people hanging in the lobby and was just GROSS. I am sure it had BedBugs. haha. However be aware bedbugs do NOT discriminate and NYC is just loaded with them, even if you stay in a NICE hotel.
Washington Square Hotel is about as cheap as it gets without being crap.

Thank you. I was leaning toward that one while looking at hotels in the area on booking.com. The singles are probably all booked, I got a room with 2 twin beds instead. Still a good price. The site said there was only one room left so I snagged it. Cancelation is free so if I find something else I'm good.

I don't think you can do much better honestly. I TripAdvisor'ed the heck out of my trip in 08 and I am kicking myself for not doing this place from the beginning. Sure, there are cheaper places, but you get what you pay for! (bed bugs and syphilis infections aside)
Since you have another bed maybe you can split with another ledgie!

That definitely gives me peace of mind in this choice. It was about $100 more than the other bargain hotels but you are right about "you get what you pay for". It's closest to the venue and is outside Washington Square park so I can't lose that way.
I got the 2 beds in case I do wind up sharing. The queen was $25/nite more too.

You may wrinkle your nose at it, but I heard that the La Quinta @ 32nd/Broadway is not too bad; I know someone who stays there all the time when he's in town. It's not the most glamorous location (on the edge of Koreatown), but it is relatively cheap ($180/night) and it has a popular rooftop bar/lounge. Easy access to Webster Hall via the N and R lines. Given the nightmares you may hear about hotels in NY, at least you can rest assured that La Quinta is a national chain with a certain minimum standard of quality.
You know who has the best knowledge of New York hotels (or hotels in any city, for that matter)? Flight attendants! There are tons of smaller hotels tucked away on side streets that are decent and cheap, but off the radar of most travel sites.

I may switch to that one since it is $200 cheaper. No bed bug reports according to bedbugregistry.com. I do like the location of W Square much better though so I might suck it up and pay the extra money.
