This thread is for posting Rock A Little outtakes, demos, remixes, alternate versions and live performances, in hopes of compiling a resource for fans of the era, as well as perhaps finding upgrades. Many of the recordings we have have been copied and dubbed so many times on cassettes in the Eighties and Nineties, that sound quality is dismal in quite a few cases. However, an upgrade may always be around the corner, as i've learned on this Board several times.
Not all of these are great sound, but maybe we can find some upgrades! And some of these are very much improved sound from what I used to have. I will label the ones from the Masters; there aren't that many from Rock A Little, unfortunately. Here're a few to get this party started:

Hey guys!
Kinda new around here, so this is my first post.
Thank you so much for starting this up! I kind of lost all my Stevie demos/outtakes throughout the years. But I shall post whatever I still have :)
Here's a really good acoustic demo of Are you Mine

Here's a somewhat better sounding copy of "All Over You"... it's pretty bright sounding in the treble, but when I tried playing around with equalization, it seemed to only take away from the natural sounding hi-hats and the vocals became too noisy in the mid-range. So here it is, unaltered from the CD I had it on, with the exception of a cleaned up intro and fade-out:

I thought it was confirmed that "All Over You" is indeed not Stevie. It was mislabelled often saying it was done with Prince but was confirmed by both sources that it's not Stevie singing in it.
Correct me if I'm wrong :)

I'm really looking forward to this... If at all possible, it would be awesome if you could share in lossless form (WAV or FLAC, etc.) Thanks in advance!
Also, if anyone has lossless versions of any of their postings that are in mp3 form and can share them, that would be terrific! Most of us have mp3s, because they are the ones heavily circulated... but for archival purposes, lossless would be ideal. :)

As far as I know, Lily Girl was an outtake from TOSOTM; if it's got Kenny G on sax, then it's definitely from TOSOTM, not RAL.
I'd love some better-sounding versions of I Call You Missing and Running Through the Garden.

I found one of the versions of What Has ... but I'm sure I have one way clearer than this. This is from the "tango sessions" compilation.
It's ripped at 192 kbps straight from the LOSSLESS format (Unfortunately I don't have the lossless version...)
What Has Rock & Roll Ever Done For You:

I heard a long time ago that this song was her "divorce song" to Kim Anderson & that it was intended for Rock a Little, but maybe she didn't have the room & held it over for Tango, but decided ultimately against it? Who knows... there's so many demos that have different versions from different periods of time/albums, that still never ended up being used, so this is yet another I guess...

Yeah that's true. I heard before that there's a RAL era version of "Sorcerer" floating around.
But vocally on this What Has Rock & Roll Done For You, it sounds more like it was recorded in the Rock a Little era - and like, I guess being as none of these compilations were made professionally, someone might've bunched it in with other Tango demos.
Not like it really matters anyway lol. Although I thought I should put that in because some people around here seem to be really condescending about what-stevie-demo-belongs-where :P

I got some masters recently in the mail, and these were on a CD that was labeled as something else - I think it was a mistake, but the person never wrote back when I asked about them. I was pleasantly surprised, and the sound quality really is a drastic improvement.

No kidding. I never really bothered listening to the other versions of Mirror Mirror solely because they were too muffled.
Where do you find these masters that you can buy? Because I've looked on e-bay and can't really find any.
I would love to get my hands on some of the original tapes of demos if possible. Like, the compilations (ex: Uncirculated Rumours, Rocking a Little on the Other Side of the Mirror) because I'd like to upload them in lossless format just to preserve quality. All mine totally SUCK now. And a lot of them are starting to skip towards the end....

There are reels on eBay every now and then, but the best way to get masters is just by trade, or online sites like this.
Many of those demo compilations are hard to find in lossless quality because they've been traded so many times. Every now and then you'll get lucky.

Here are 3 more enhanced versions from demos posted in this thread...
"Joan of Arc (Take 9 - 03_09_1986)" (original = lossy/mp3?)
http://www.mediafire.com/?8gfn8y82abgs9ok
Notes:
This one had excellent fidelity, but was really soft and very treble-y (imo), so I did some re-equalization, boosted the overall volume, and played with the stereo image a bit.
"Rose Garden" (RAL demo version) (original = mp3 160 kbps)
http://www.mediafire.com/?ycou3azydsa20da
Notes:
This one really sounded good to begin with... I just lowered the intro volume to match the rest of the track, tried adding some high frequency details with a plug-in I use, re-equalized a little, and edited fade-out.
"Love Is Like A River" (RAL demo version) (original = mp3 320 kbps)
http://www.mediafire.com/?96za82eqb3exabu
Notes:
This one was a tough one... the sound had been boosted to the point where there was EXTREME clipping/distortion in the sound (particularly in the right channel). So luckily I found the mp3 I had of this, I opened it in MP3Gain to try and figure out what the right volume level should be. Then I used a plug-in that can shape the waveform (add punch to loud noises) to try and add some dynamics back into the sound. I then tried playing with the stereo image some, re-equalized, light noise reduction, etc... It still doesn't sound too great, but I think it's a little better.
Enjoy!

Glad you asked! Here is my current playlist. It's...in a state of flux, I'm not sure that I like the running order. Each side is about 22-and-a-half-minutes long. Mirror Mirror, Battle of the Dragons, Rock A Little and HAEWAFY are official or promo releases, but the other tracks are outtakes/alternates.
I wanted to include Are You Mine and Reconsider me, but both feel out of place on this particular collection of songs.
Side A is great up until The Nightmare, which seems out-of-order. I haven't found a sequence yet for side B that I like.
Side A:
Mirror Mirror
Chanel Chanel
Love Is Like A River
Running Through The Garden
The Nightmare

Awesome! Hey, when Chris gets her "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" versions transferred, maybe one of those will go on your Mirror, Mirror. What about "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star"?
I'm working on a darker Rock A Little, centered around "Night Gallery", which is similar to the song "Rock A Little" for me. Let me work on it a little more...
Yes. I imagine the initial shelved recordings to be even darker than what ended up on RAL.
I would definitely add "At The Fair" in my mix and maybe "Something Exquisite" even though it bares strong resemblances in melody & structure to "No Spoken Word", but its still a good song. "But if you do not run the race ~ How will you know? If you do not run it ~ then you cannot win it, ever!"
~Mirror Mirror~
Running Through The Garden
Love is Like A River
She Still Loves Him
Night Gallery
At The Fair
Battle Of The Dragon
Jimmy Come On Back
She Calls Him Missing
Chanel Chanel
Something Exquisite
City Of Hope
One More Big Time Rock n'Roll Star
Mirror Mirror
I excluded any RAL tracks, because there is enough material to have had 2 entire records - one in 84' and another in 85'

I've tried to keep my playlist to the length that an album released in 1984/85 would have been, but it's been hard to limit the song choices.
I left off At The Fair and Night Gallery because both sound like demos, and no versions have circulated that sound like almost-complete studio tracks...
I don't think Jimmy Come Back would have been recorded if Jimmy had not walked off the project, so....would this song even exist in a world where Mirror Mirror was released?
Something Exquisite and One More Big Time Rock n'Roll Star - I love these songs, but not as much as Thousand Days and the RAL tracks I used. Hard choices!
If the Mirror Mirror album had been released, I don't think RAL (the album)would have ever have happened. I'm fairly certain that No Spoken Word and The Nightmare and Rock A Little would be there as songs, but....the rest of them seem unlikely, with the exception of I Sing For The Things.
I'm guessing that Tied Up In Promises, Imperial Hotel, Talk To Me, I Can't Wait, Some Become Stranger, Sister Honey - maybe even HAEWAFY - none would have been recorded (or maybe even written) if Mirror Mirror had happened as planned. These all feel like 'emergency' tracks: Oh noes! Jimmy is gone and we have to start over and still get an album out reasonable quickly! What can we use and who can collaborate to make this happen!?
Ah, speculation!

As the story goes, her life and antics were just too crazy for him to continue on the project. Too many drugs, too little work going on. Stevie was difficult to deal with and he just threw his hands up and left.
I've also read that it was a mutual parting of ways.

I have to take back what I said about Talk To Me probably not being recorded if Mirror Mirror had happened:
The song was written by Chas Sandford, who co-wrote John Waite's "Missing You". Sandford also plays most of the instruments on "Talk to Me". The song was brought to the attention of Nicks by producer Jimmy Iovine, "who was always on the hunt for a hit song." Stevie says she didn't like the song at first because she had trouble with the vocals, but Iovine persisted and she eventually recorded it. Jim Keltner was in the studio next door doing some drum overdubs during the recording process. After Nicks explained her dilemma, Keltner gave her some words of encouragement and offered to stay with her and be her audience. Nicks sang the song twice during the session and then it was finished.
And this is interesting as well:
Jimmy Iovine was originally brought in to produce the album and worked on the original demo recordings in 1984. However, he parted ways with Nicks midway through the recording sessions, claiming he did not like the direction in which Nicks wanted to take the album. It was later revealed that the two had been in a relationship for several years, and he left production of Rock a Little due to their break-up and Nicks' subsequent relationship with Eagles member Joe Walsh (for whom she penned her much-loved ballad "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You"). Keith Olsen, Rick Nowels and Nicks herself took over production duties after Iovine's departure.

Found this on NickFix, part of a Jim Ladd interview from 1998:
Stevie: Okay, the great story that goes along with Reconsider Me is in 1985 when I was doing Rock A Little, Jimmy Iovine brought me this song. Warren Zevon wrote it, and, of course I love Warren because I've known Warren since before Lindsey and I joined Fleetwood Mac. Warren and Waddy were some of our friends so we go back a long way. He brought this song to me. Jimmy thought it was a very important song for me to do. He thought it was like "Stop Draggin More Heart" was in a way. It was that kind of a career changing song. And, of course, you couldn't tell me anything in 1985 and I just really didn't want to do another person's song, you know? So, I at the end, I did record I it and then when all the songs were recorded in the end, you know, a couple songs had to go, I pulled it because it wasn't one of my songs and now, I didn't even remember that Reconsider Me existed until Atlantic went back in all their vaults and found a bunch of stuff-a bunch of wild and crazy stuff that's been lost forever…and um…they loved it and I said great, you know, great. It's a great song. I was very surprised that I sung it well because I didn't really remember recording it that much so I didn't really remember the fine tune parts of it, but when they played it for me I thought 'wow, it's a great song'. I'm not a real 'reconsider me' gal but it's okay because I didn't write this. I can sing this and I can interpret this for Warren and I hope everybody really likes it.

No, "Talk To Me" was recorded in May 1985, after Stevie and the record company coaxed Jimmy into coming on back to try to get some hit singles for Stevie. They recorded 5 songs that May. The plan was to get them done and release the album in August 1985.
So, Jimmy left, but he also returned. Ginny Kamano herself said that "Talk To Me" was recorded in May 1985 when Iovine returned to record 5 more songs with Stevie. Maybe that's when "Reconsider Me" was recorded as well, May 1985.

Thanks for the info KC. I think it's kinda funny that Stevie doesn't even remember a lot of RAL. I feel that Reconsider Me just didn't fit the album at that time. I'ts one of Stevies most dated sounding albums... And I so much like better a lot of the unreleased stuff. Maybe that's why Jimmy didn't like where it was going;.... She had all this great material, and then ended up deciding on Imperial Hotel and Sister Honey...

All flash no substance really. Now I know some people like them and thats fine but sometimes I think what was left on the 'cutting' floor so to speak was better than what we'd ended up with. Plus as we have mentioned many many times I always wonder if the original concept LP that is : Mirror, Mirror with just Jimmy Iovine himself--I do wonder if itself would've been a much better product?? I would hope so but well I guess we'll not ever know. Does anyone have any clue what songs were originally recorded for Mirror, Mirror. I'm sure we've discussed this before at length but I just don't recall other than MM and maybe One More Big Time R & R Star --I still think this was recorded earlier because of Stevie's voice than? same with Battle of The Dragon. I do think I would've loved MM better than RAL but we'll never know will we? sad but true.:D

So are these actually from a LOSSLESS source? I'm listening to them and notice that even though they're in WAV format, they're still very lossy and not much different than an mp3 version... Like, they still have that compressed sound.
So are they ripped as a wav file from an mp3 source?

I have an odd request. I have had some painful losses recently and some of those I love are having a hard time...my Mum, Sue, Kristin....you don't know them but I just like to give posts a bit of me.
Anyway, I am sure some of you have been where I am sometimes...kind of sad but, you just keep going...and you keep things" up" the best you can.
So, here is my request. Stevies sad but thread of hope songs actually helpp me feel better...its weird, I don't know if you guys go through something kind of deep...and you had a demo or song playing on loop at the time...
I lost my sister and grandmother in my arms not long ago...
When I was driving in the rain without my glasses to the hospital...after she was gone, I had the clearest Sanctuary playing...and it was like a session cd.
The silver springs multi demo/outtake...etc...were for my sister.
Time is going to be really bright...and I was hoping someone had a collection.
you guys have been keeping me going as I take my computer phone...and all of you with me...everywhere I am pulled...and go. You make me smile.

That sounds like it'd be a very cool cd. I like Night Gallery a lot. Rockabye Baby has sort of a dark feel too. And Rock a Little I LOVE.

Well I know you pretty much ignore every post that I write, and it's not really any weight off my shoulder, but could I make a suggestion?
If this is what you're doing, don't you think it would be easier to be a bit more organized about it? People have to dig and search through so much around these - and like, often times download doubles of the exact same thing.
I know you're saying it's because something could be better quality than the other - but even so - sorting things like that would be much easier if there was some system to it.
Like, why don't you just re-edit your first post whenever you have a new song to post? Then people don't have to dig and search?
Or why dont you post WHICH compilation a song comes from?
I'm just saying this because collecting demos can become very tedious and disorganized - so a distributor should really do all they can to try to keep it as organized as possible in consideration for the other fans.
Again, I'm pretty sure this is going to be overlooked by you. And I don't really care, but I'm just saying this in consideration for other people downloading in here.

I think this happened a lot with vinyl. Vinyl has more time for fades and the track time could be subjective. I might think the track ends when I hear no more of the song, but the person recording track times might consider the silence between tracks to be part of the preceding track.

Well, I meant a few extra seconds vocals by Stevie as it's fading. Just like the extended "Rooms On Fire" example, where there is some more Stevie on the vinyl than on the CD-single. Maybe I'm hearing things.

Daniel, I think you have some great suggestions (I like the idea of updating the original post, but many boards have a time-limit on the window to edit a post), but as a long time collector of demos, I feel comfortable saying it's up to the collector to organize their collection the way they see fit.
As an example, I don't keep any demo compilations because there is so much duplication and the sources vary tremendously and the playing speed of the tracks can vary depending on the tape deck that was used to transfer the songs to CD - for these reasons and more I find it easier to keep one list of demos/alternates, A to Z, and upgrade songs for quality whenever possible.
The days of fan-made demo compilations are over, really. I agree that it might be helpful to know if the version of Silver Springs you are downloading is from Ivory Keys or Mirrorball or Valentine Demos or Songs of Rhiannon, but it's irrelevant in the long run when you end up with 16 copies of the same piano demo spread across multiple compilations.

Hey everyone... I'm pleased to report that finally mediafire is working for me today.. yay! Mike recently posted a piano demo of "The Nightmare" (thanks, Mike!).. so I went back to a CD I had from a long time ago to compare the sound quality. I found that the one I had actually had better fidelity (some more hiss too, but c'est la vie!), so I thought I would share it here (in two parts, although the CD has them together in one long track). In addition, the preceding track on the CD is titled "Gypsy Beggars" and sounds like it was recorded at the exact same time as "The Nightmare" piano demo (piano & vocals are at the same level and same spot in stereo image). For anyone wondering, the CD compilation was titled "Twisted", but I've seen it more often referred to as "Enchanted Outtakes". I used some gentle noise reduction to reduce hiss a little and faded hiss at beginnings and ends.

As you all are no doubt aware, most of the Rock A Little outtakes and demos speeds are quite fast due to multiple copying and sharing via cassette format back in the day. At times Stevie sounds like a girl of 13 or a singing chipmunk! I have always wanted to get around to restoring these fast tracks to their proper speed and pitch. I have begun with Mirror, Mirror since we have a finished released track for a guide.
There are seven known tracks of Mirror, Mirror out there; the released track plus six outtakes. I am posting the outtakes here in WAV format. They have been restored to proper pitch and speed and have been optimized in volume to Odb. The audio quality of the tracks varies but is mostly good.
Of the six outtakes there are two different versions of the song. The first version is the "rock version" with the steady beat, different melody and lyrics. The second version is the one with the same backing track as the released version with five different vocal takes by Stevie.
Mirror, Mirror [Version #1]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2uun5elj3wc2ykl
There is no known complete copy of this version in circulation. In this outtake the music fades out midway through and then fades back in. For this pitch restored version I have spliced these two sections together so that the music never completely fades away and it sounds more like one take. For the pitch restoration I used the song "Rock A Little (Go Ahead Lily)" as my guide and that seemed a good match.
Mirror, Mirror [Version #2, Vocal #1]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?hnbcwwg28v1csrn
The melodies vary greatly in the five takes of this second version. They are primarily identified by Stevie's last line in each take. In this first take the last line is "In spite of what you say, well I really wanted you".
Mirror, Mirror [Version #2, Vocal #2]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?8fbw2i11bc8avww
In this second take Stevie's last line is "Now this will leave you haunted, I really wanted you!"
Mirror, Mirror [Version #2, Vocal #3]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mhb4h31zczgkbby
In this third take Stevie's last line is "Well ask your mirror, well I really wanted you...."
Mirror, Mirror [Version #2, Vocal #4]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ulgadkl9gwobwr7
In this fourth take Stevie's last line is "This will leave you haunted in your mirror".
Mirror, Mirror [Version #2, Vocal #5]:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?e8pls894e28jyjc
This fifth take includes most of Stevie's final vocal with a few different lines that were later re-recorded. In this take Stevie does not sing the bridge or the last chorus. The vocal ends at the instrumental section and the song remains instrumental from there to the end. The ending on this take fades out instead of finishing cold like the others do.
Enjoy everybody! Hopefully I'll get to restoring more of the Rock A Little fast tracks soon.

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this... it is one of those things that always kinda bothers me. One of the problems I have with this era (in deciding whether to fix this or not) is her voice can sound quite different on various tracks (probably due to her voice changing significantly during the mid-80's)... sometimes even at the wrong speed, her voice will sound natural. But other times (like the Mirror Mirrors you posted), it is obvious the speed is unnaturally fast. Usually when I'm working on enhancing tracks, I don't mess with the speed unless I'm certain it's sped up (or too slow). There are a few cases when it's slightly sped-up where I wonder if it was intended to be that way... an example of a commercially released sped-up track is the Time-Life version of "Talk To Me". If you slow it down, you realize her voice is natural when it's in tune with the album version... however, the music is also significantly slower then, so I assume that's probably why they sped it up (to keep a faster tempo). Anyways... thanks again... much appreciated!

"Mirror, Mirror" 5 - B-Side version
http://www.mediafire.com/?bukgwkrjw59t3c7
Remember, although released in 1994 as the b-side to the US cassette single of "Blue Denim", this is a 1984 recording from Rock A Little, not re-recorded for Street Angel.
oh wow, I never knew this! Always assumed it was re-recorded like If You Were My Love and got kicked off the album again

I never knew that either, I always thought her voice sounded more like mid-80s but always assumed that since it came out in 1994, it was re-recorded. So, what about "Thousand Days"? Was it re-recorded, or was it also a mid 80s vocal also that was released as a B-side like "Mirror Mirror"?

Ginny Kamano sent out a letter in early 1993 stating that Stevie had newly re-recorded "Thousand Days" (which had preciously been recorded for Rock A Little in 1984) with production by Chris Lord-Alge. This was a new version done for Street Angel.

I have that cassette! I believe that Mirror Mirror is one of Stevie's most obscure song in her catalog of official releases. It should have been included on the third disc of her Enchanted box set! Was it ever included on a foreign CD single? Otherwise, all we have is a cassette version!
It's strange, considering that it was to be the title track of her album that became Rock a Little. I would love to hear her Street Angel version. It's too bad it wasn't released as a b-side on Blue Denim or Maybe Love. So now it lays dormant in a studio vault, along with Call You Missing, along with dozens of others.
Hopefully, eventually, when Stevie stops producing music, someone will mill the remants, and squeeze several albums (0r a box set) and her unreleased work, along with various alternate/demo versions of released songs, as well as a bunch of complete live concert CDs from every era of her career.

That 1984 "Mirror, Mirror" is only officially released on the US Cassette Single of "Blue Denim" from July 1994. So, since "Real Tears" was available in several formats (CD-Single, vinyl, cassette) in several countries, that makes "Mirror, Mirror" Stevie's most obscure b-side, most definitely.
The original track listing for Enchanted had "Real Tears" and "I Pretend" on it. But "Real Tears" got replaced on Disc 2 by "Kind Of Woman" and "I Pretend" was dropped from Disc 3 by "It's Late".

With thanks to Randy for bringing up the topic of speed issues on various demos/outtakes, I went back to the "Tied Up (In Promises)" demo I worked on enhancing awhile back. I was sure it was slightly sped-up, so I slowed it down a little. Something about the equalization I did always bugged me. Lately, I have been toying with a new technique for equalizing poorer quality sources: I look at the frequency spectrum of the file and try to make some equalization adjustments based on that... you can visually see things that need to be adjusted which my ears would never be able to discern on their own. I think the sound is much improved from before... and it's nice to have it sounding more natural due to what I am hoping is the "correct" speed.

Thanks Mike, as always, for sharing these gems!!!!
The sound is definitely clearer on this version than the source from last year.... only trouble is this source has heavy noise reduction at the beginning & ends. When enhancing, I mixed in the intro/outro (my fav. Swedish word...why don't we adopt this??) from the earlier version so we can hear a bit of what was lost in the noise reduction... of course this adds a little noise too, but I think it works.

For anyone who has missed it, here's the first enhanced version from the older source:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ucityix23ic8d9o
For anyone interested.. here are my nerdy notes to Mike on what I did with it/issues I encountered:
The first thing I noticed when I looked at the spectrum is a huge spike around 15.6kHz... from reading about this, it appears to be caused by television/comp. monitor interference. I guess when a television is near a recording source, the recorder will pick up interference from that TV/monitor. This has even happened in recording studios, where they sometimes have monitors in the studio whose interference actually gets recorded into the tracks when they're made. Good engineers should have been able to prevent this, but years ago I guess it wasn't as well known of an issue and some people can't even hear the high-pitch whine. One example that has always bugged me: Celine Dion's song "A New Day Has Come". In certain sections on the radio/shorter album version, there is this annoying whine... kicks in when she starts singing "A new day..." towards the beginning, right after the echoey snare drums.
Interesting notes of difference between the sources: the speed was ever so slightly slower in this one; the left/right channels were switched; the signal was inverted (if you open a file in a wave-editing program, and zoom in anywhere to see the wavey lines up-close... they were inverted so that when the lines would go up in each L & R side, they went down in the other file & vice-versa)... if that makes sense. There was also a buzzing/clicking noise heard mostly on the left channel in the new file. I tried fading different and using more noise reduction, but I don't think it worked too well. So the solution I used was to mix in the beginnings and fade-outs of the first enhanced version (after adjusting speed, switching the L&R channels & inverting the signal so they matched this version). You still hear a little clicking sound throughout the file, but there's really no way I know how to get rid of it without ruining the sound.
