Hey guys
Even though it has the most tracks that I skip, I've been in a real Street Angel mood lately and so thought I'd see what everyone's favourite track from the album is. Or top 3, whatever...
So do you go for Love Is Like A River? Blue Denim? Greta? Jane? ()...
For me it has to be Kick It. I've always really liked it and have been playing it so much over the past couple of days! Then perhaps Listen To The Rain and Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind.
Out of interest, my version of Street Angel has that song listed as Maybe Love, do other editions have the full title in the tracklisting?

I really love the title track. I like the moodiness of the track, which I don't think she has ever created/re-created on any other track.

"Greta" is my all~time favourite from Street Angel, as well as "Love Is Like A River" and "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind".
I love all of Street Angel! I wish "If You Were My Love" had been left in as well.

Blue Denim -- "I'm going a way for a little while to remember how to feel! And if I find the answer, I promise you I'll come back and get you!!" -- I think that summarizes post-Tango Mac meaning, ritualized in The Dance and applied to post-9/11 culture with Say You Will. Plus it's a solid rock song with nice guitar work. And it's about Lindsey. And it's romantic.
Greta -- The groove is like a slipstream--the enveloping sound pulls you in, which makes its very personal, very idiosyncratic tale of loneliness and isolation (this is where Stevie is AT) into something expansive and universal, just as Stevie turns to the phantom ideal of Greta for guidance (a very Stevie approach to pop iconography). It's about maintaining one's humanity. It's a humanity idealized by Greta. It is also a sequel to "Garbo," in which Stevie dreams of joining the constellation of female stars--and now "Greta" is about the state of her dreams having achieved that goal.

I like 'Listen to the Rain'. The intro reminds me a bit of 'Pretty in Pink' by the Psychedelic Furs. 'Kick It' is great, too. I find this album has grown on me a lot.

1. Greta (One of my all time favorites of hers)
2. Blue Denim (especially the remix)

Docklands (master mix) is better than the album version.. I like the trip-hop sounding drums on this one.

I have several favorites:
Blue Denim
Greta
Street Angel
Love Is Like A River
Kick It
They rotate around being my top fav :). I love how absolutely gritty and rocking Love Is Like A River is. I really dig angry Stevie. Blue Denim is just perfection, IMO. The title track is so eerie and atmospheric and sad. Greta is quirky and fun. I think comparing love to an addiction which needs to be kicked in Kick It is just so incredibly apt... and it's a great little rocker too!

So I had to go back and look at the track listing, just to be sure I didn't over look anything... But I think my favorite is Jane. The least popular for sure. But beautiful none the less IMO. Really, except for the title track, I love them all.
I've noticed that I listened to this album the most about 2-3 years ago, I kind of listen to one album heavily for about 6 months, then rotate to the next one. I'm currently on rock a little. I may need to listen to osotm, sa, and tisl each for a week before iyd drops, just to come full circle.

Yeah, Rose Garden is probably in the bottom two for me as well.
I have a feeling there are those out there who love Jane. But it's a guilty pleasure for them because of all the ridicule Jane gets for a single lyric, so they never come forward...
Come in out of the darkness, Jane lovers!

1. Maybe Love
2. Blue Denim
3. Unconditional Love
Those are the top 3. "Greta", "Listen to the Rain", "Kick It", "Love Is Like A River" are all decent. Not great, but decent.
"Street Angel", "Rose Garden" and "Destiny" are fair.
"Jane", "Just Like A Woman", and "Docklands" are bleah.
"Inspiration" should have been on the album.
My main complaint about Street Angel is that like Behind the Mask, Stevie's songs from this time period are just kind of mundane. They're lacking the spark and fire of her earlier Mac and solo output.

My 2 favorites are the title track and Love Is A River. Love is Like A River just rocks so hard as others have mentioned, and I can't explain Street Angel but it is equally as awseome as Love Is Like a River. The weird thing is its maybe one of her worst vocals ever, but when you think about this song only works with that almost uninterested sounding vocal. The song is almost hypnotic.
After those 2 are Blue Denim, Docklands and Kick It.

From favorite to least favorite:
Destiny
Kick It
Blue Denim
Love is Like a River
Docklands
Rose Garden
Jane
Listen to the Rain
Street Angel
Unconditional Love
Greta
Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
For the record, I cannot stand the version of "Destiny" that made it onto the boxed set. And I did not love it in concert. But the harmonies on the album track are beautiful.
"Kick It" could use some of Stevie's trademark layered vocals late in the song - it just feels like that's missing.
"Love is Like a River" is really good, but would be great if it had a better bridge, IMO.
"Jane" is better with the piano, but the vocal is better on the album version.
And I do like the demo of "Greta" with the more pronounced drum track, even though I dislike the album version.

I love Listen To The Rian, one of the best tracks on there. Ialso think her version of Just Like A Woman is a guilty pleasure.
I really, really can't stand Jane. I have to stop it as soon as it starts if I've not skipped. It's not just becauise of the chimpanzee lyric, the rest of the lyrics are dreadful too. Not keen on Destiny either, too sappy for me.

Stevie's voice on "Just Like A Woman" is so beautiful! Not crazy about the Bob Dylan song, though. But Stevie makes it okay for me.
I think I'm the only one who LOVES "Docklands"!!!!! Stevie's voice is just so incredible on this one, especially the ending vamps! "Hold on.... Give me your hand!" Plus, those cool keyboards...
BTW, Betsy Cook's original does not have the same lyrics as Stevie on the bridge, as well as the final verse ~ are those uncredited "Additional lyrics by Stevie Nicks"?

No, I love it too:xoxo: Despite it seeming to be an unusual song choice for Stevie - the mystic - It works on this record with such disparate themes and more simplistic direction. Docklands is a solid song, while Stevie does her magic, as only she can, on the vocals. When I bought this record on release day, it was one of my favorites and it sounded like a single to my ears at the time:shrug:. For the most part I like Street Angel and listen to the songs often, I just think it suffered from some unimaginative arrangements and production. With a few different song selections, and some more tweaking, the album could have been really good. And Stevie's vocals on SA have never a problem for me.
Here are my picks from Street Angel. Starting with my favorites, then falling:
Greta & Blue Denim (tied)
Love Is Like A River ( the RAL demo is more "electric")
Maybe Love Will Change You Mind
Kick It - the song is missing something & I liked the extra keyboard part in the alt outtake.
Thousand Days - Should have made the final record - kicking off UL
Rose Garden
Docklands
Destiny - I prefer the SA version over Enchanted's, but nothing tops the WH outtake
Inspiration - Another track that should have made the final cut, it makes the record stronger.
Street Angel - I did not come to fully appreciate this song, until hearing the "Enchanted version, I did not care for it many years....until 98'. David Crosby's harmonies should be a little more prominent in the mix.
Listen To The Rain It's unfortunate she didn't use the Jon Bon Jovi produced TS outtake. The production/arrangement & song structure is heads and tails stronger.
The record ends for me here. The remaining songs are complete fails:
Unconditional Love- this song could have been stronger with a different arrangement, perhaps keeping the acoustic arrangement of the beautiful outtake, and working out the cringey chorus. In keeping the song simple and acoustic, along with some structual changes, I think this song could have closed the album.
Jane - the piano demo is better, The final recording should have kept that feel. But it still should have not made the cut, and been a B-side, swap in "Inspiration" instead.
Just Like A Woman- DAMN Bob Dylan for showing up at the studio and playing harmonica, otherwise I don't think this song would have been included.
God's Garden Interesting song concept, but ultimately it goes nowhere. Total snooze. What the hell were they thinking. The song & Stevis's vocals need more pulse. This one is dead on arrival.
If You Were My Love-happy to hear a fully arranged version of this song, but glad this version never make the record. This song deserves a proper send off. This version failed.
I Call You Missing - I can only wonder about the possibilities.....
Interesting to note, Rolling Stone gave this album 3 stars- I believe. Buried in their August 94' installment, 2 months after SA release. It's interesting because, even though it was just a small, couple paragraph review. It was decent. (I need to dig this out, I cannot find it anywhere on the net), considering they slayed Wild Heart through OSOTM.

Yes, the US single of "Blue Denim", but "Mirror, Mirror" is still a Rock A Little outtake. this is not a new Street Angel version, but a 1984 recording from Rock A Little.

Yes, The 84 recorded version of Mirror, Mirror was mixed and slapped on the B-side to Blue Denim, only available on the single cassette. I recall it feeling very odd and jarring at the time, such a different era. But Stevie no doubt wanted people to hear this song. It's just so sad she did not include it on Enchanted.

Lets see I like: Blue Denim for sure/Street Angel/Love Is Like a River/Greta --but I still like the RAL version better. For Listen to The Rain--again like the '91/TS version esp the lyrics were structured better. I just don't like the 'new' arrangement for SA on this song. For me it lost something in the translation from '91-the '94 version. So not loving this song much--which I was bummed because the way it originally was it was awesome. It really should've been released for TS--it fit perfectly for that record to me. Destiny will always remind me of the WH version so I don't think this fits for SA either much but I don't mind the song but it does kinda drag a little bit. Not too much love for Unconditional Love or Maybe Love. There ok but not written by Stevie would've preferred a written Stevie song. These could've been B-Sides or something maybe an EP cd would've been nice. Kick It is pretty cool I guess. Not much love for Jane or the chimps at all. I think that should've went on the cd nor the Bob Dylan song JLAW. The 2 Japan/or b-sides: Inspiration and God's Garden --well of the 2 I probably like Inspiration more I think God's Garden kinda drags on too much. Plus Stevie's vocals just kinda 'sit' there don't stand out. She sounds tired or sleepy or something?? Not sure what it is. I do love having MM as a b-side but I do wish the version would've had the extra lyrics at the end instead of just the music ending the song. Plus as much as I love it that it is a Unreleased RAL version maybe she should've recorded a SA version. It does seem like an odd inclusion really. Why it this version or another MM version (since there are many) wasn't included on Enchanted I'll not ever understand that same for the Extended version of RAL (UK 12"). I could probably keep going really with this. Docklands is an OK song but I think Darklands as a title would've been more interesting. I only say this is cause I think someone labeled it wrong on one of my 'cassette' demo tapes back in the day and called it Darklands instead of Docklands. I think that sounds more Stevie like really. Overall, I can deal with listening to some of SA but it always seems the songs that go on a cd or don't go on it are the ones I like better than what made the cut so to speak. Same with the outtake photos some I've seen from this era are much better than what was chosen really. There's probably more that we haven't seen too I'm sure from every solo lp. Now the SA tour was great. I'll always LOVE this tour since it was my first time to see Stevie Solo so it'll always hold that special place inside my heart. Same for Mirror when I first started to collect Stevie/Mac stuff.:D

I'm not crazy about the original version of "Jane". The piano is too much of a rip~off of "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" for me. Also, that guitar? Sounds like a Muzak guitar from the Seventies.
Yeah, when I first got that version I thought, "Cool! It's better because it's unreleased!" Nowadays, I'm back to the 1994 version that made it on to the album. It flows better with the other songs, which is weird, since it's a totally different set of producers and musicians, mostly.
It used to kill me that Stevie didn't write "Inspiration" because I loved her performance of it so damned much. But I got over it. Every time I listen to "Inspiration", I remember Memorial Day Weekend 1994 in the end of May, buying the CD and cassette singles of "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind" and listening to those two songs over and over that 4~day weekend!

And it's romantic.

wish i could say "ditto" but 10 character min. doesn't allow it. i looooooooooove Greta. as i've said before, working "rhinestone collections all the time" into a song is not for the mere mortal!!

At the time I used to commute to work in the South Side of Chicago, but I lived on the Far North side, so it took awhile. I have vivid memories of walking home from the el & bus every night, in the dark, with my walkman blaring those two songs through the headset, and then having to rewind the cassette & play them again, totally oblivious to my surroundings. It's a wonder that I never got mugged/jumped. Somebody up there was watching out for the young & the stupid.

Except for Blue Denim, I prefer the master mix versions of all the songs on SA. Probably the best song is the title track. I enjoy Greta and Love Is Like a River quite a bit. Listen to the Rain is fun, but the lyrics are cringeworthy ("You're consistent - hey, and that's good!").
I think her cover of Just Like a Woman is great, and Docklands really doesn't deserve all the hate it gets here. Unconditional Love and Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (yes, the full title was printed on the CD I had) both make me want to retch; seriously, Stevie, you need to get to an Al-Anon meeting. Inspiration is annoying and God's Garden is a real wrist-slasher of a song.
Even though they didn't make the album, I adore If You Were My Love and Thousand Days.

We've disagreed over this album in some ways, but you've pretty much summed up how I feel about Street Angel. The title track is one of her greatest songs, in my opinion - and I wish she'd take it on the road. The guitar is so pretty and I believe the song would be a classic today if it were recorded in the 70's along with Rhiannon, Storms, etc..
MLWCYM doesn't make me want to throw up, but it's just 'ok' for me. Unconditional Love... although I compared it to If Anyone Falls or Gate & Garden previously, I wasn't talking about the quality of the songs, but rather the gooey subject matter. It's sickeningly sweet, like many of Stevie's songs. The demos of Unconditional Love are far better than the finished song...but the album would have been better served without this track in the first place.
Listen To the Rain does have cheesy lyrics! But it's just so much fun, so I can forgive that one.
Docklands is a favorite of mine, always.
I don't really hear much different between the master mixes and the released album, other than minor things which don't have much impact for me, with the exception of Love Is Like A River - I definitely prefer the released version of this song.
And for the record, I don't buy the whole "I don't like that part of my life" story when it comes to why these songs are not performed live. Many of them (Destiny, Rose Garden, Listen To The Rain, Greta, Love Is Like A River, Thousand Days and possibly others), were written before Rock A Little, before rehab, before Klonopin, before Linsdey ditched Fleetwood Mac, before the breakup with Joe, before she got fat - in sum, before the times in her life that she doesn't want to deal with and remember.
All in all, I am annoyed at Stevie for locking these songs away. Some of them are honestly good songs and could be easily redeemed from the 'bad memories' by reworking them to be what she wanted them to be and performing them live.

Uh, this is where my husband and I definitely disagree! I love all of the songs, especially Blue Denim, Greta (okay, I like the RAL demo best), Street Angel (check out Jeremy's remix!), Just Like a Woman (brilliant), Kick It, and of course, Jane.

Unconditional Love... although I compared it to If Anyone Falls or Gate & Garden previously, I wasn't talking about the quality of the songs, but rather the gooey subject matter. It's sickeningly sweet, like many of Stevie's songs.
I don't think IAF or G&G are sickeningly sweet; UL, on the other hand, goes beyond sickeningly sweet. It's not sweet at all, it's just naive and codependent.
I don't really hear much different between the master mixes and the released album, other than minor things which don't have much impact for me, with the exception of Love Is Like A River - I definitely prefer the released version of this song.
Oh, I hear huge differences. I'd have to go back and listen to both to be able to give a play-by-play, but one that really sticks out is the title track. The album version has this hideous electric guitar that cuts into the song and destroys the mood. On the master mix, it's either missing completely, or way down in the mix.
And for the record, I don't buy the whole "I don't like that part of my life" story when it comes to why these songs are not performed live.
I'm not sure if I believe it either. Also, this is what Waddy said, not Stevie. I'm not saying he's lying, he just may have misinterpreted something she said. Or something. If Stevie did say it, it's just an excuse & I think there's another reason.

I know you don't! But I do...
And you're right - it is naive and codependent, and now that you say that I'll never really hear it the same way again.

Thank you for saying a few things I've been dying to say myself for years! My first concert was the Street Angel tour, and I have a cassette from that show and I'd cringe every time it came to the part in between with my 55 year old aunt screaming, "Unconditional Love! UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!". I could have died... Sorry dear aunty...

I don't think I've ever heard that one. I hope somebody has it.

I don't think any of the regulars here have. mikebise says a woman in San Antonio has it but won't share it. Not sure who else might be sitting on it.

She sounds like a c-word we just can't bring ourselves to say, or she's not telling the truth?

I suppose she could've been lying, but mikebise seems pretty convinced she was telling the truth. And apparently the song is on the original tracklist that was turned in to the record company in '93.

She played it for me over the phone. It exists.

Over the phone, what a tease! I hope this c-word (clam) opens up and shares!

Oh, so you've heard it? What's it like? Is it very different from the RAL outtake?

It was 1995, but I remember Stevie more prominent, not singing so much with the girls. I don't remember the music at all, but it was clear, and not the Rock A Little version. She also played the Street Angel "If You Were My Love" for me, and this was 2 years before it leaked to everyone in 1997. So, this was the real thing.
In 1999, she got back in contact with me, all nicey. And she had many new 1996~1999 demos Stevie had done as well. One was "Song For an American Prince", written about JFK, Jr.'s death that year. I didn't hear it, but she read lyrics. I believe it.
But she never sent me anything.

UGH!! Who is this woman? Does anyone know of anyone else who has this? She can't be the only one who has it.

She actually had a gang of friends, a cabal of sorts. In 1995, they would joke on the Stevie AOL Board about their Stevie rarities and how much only THEY deserved them.
She and her friends also came up with some weird scheme in 1998 to trick me out of some stuff. I think I've blocked it out now. She was in San Antonio, and one of her buddies was in Dallas, like me, and they had this elabourate thing going on to trick me. Maybe the whole "Do I Bring You Down?" hoax. But they were nasty.

It was in the tracklist of an 'official looking' studio cassette sold on eBay last year.A lady in Germany won the bid, the seller was in England.
Who knows if it was actually on the tape, often the tracklists printed don't match up with exact running order or songs
