Best Hippie-Queen Earth Mother

The first time I heard Stevie Nicks, I had just fallen in love with a boy in a band. I was on a family holiday in Italy. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours was one of the only CDs at the house where we stayed, and I was like, "Oh, OK. What's this?" I listened to the whole thing nonstop. There's something about Stevie that's really pure. When she sings, she sounds angelic but also wild and free, like she's getting completely lost in the song. Her new album, In Your Dreams, is just classic, classic songwriting. With this big, expansive guitar sounds, it's moving in a more modern direction, but it still sounds like Stevie Nicks. She's very much the storyteller, and she has a fantastic ability to make songs that you feel immediately connected to. Creating that intimacy while also retaining a mystique is something I learned from her. She also definitely influenced me to wear a cape. I love a cape onstage.

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine

P.S. I typed this in, so be kind.

Thanks for sharing that! Kinda interesting Florence has already heard In Your Dreams. It really gives me some reassurance that Florence likes the album and says it has big guitar sounds and moves in a more modern direction. What else could I want as a Stevie fan than that?

I was particularly happy when she said it was classic, classic songwriting. I thought Yay, no more pieced together garbage, they are really crafting again. Secret Love and Cheaper than Free are definitely real songs.

I wonder if this is the issue which reviews In Your Dreams? I remember David Wilde was talking about writing that article a while back.

I think calling it "classic, classic songwriting" counts as a vote in favor.;) Florence also says it "sounds like Stevie Nicks," which she clearly considers a pretty good thing.

As if I needed more reasons to love Florence Welch.

the way she's gushing, she obviously thinks it's good. Sometimes it seems people tend to read far FAR too deaply into things.

Even if she doesn't like it. It doesn't mean it's bad.
OR
Just because she DOES like it. Doesn't mean you will.

Food for thought.

Three words I like: Rumours, guitar and songwriting. I may give Florence a listen while I put up the boy's clothes. They sound like a band that can rock out.

I can't stand Florence's music (in a world with An Pierle & White Velvet?!) but I do appreciate the thoughtful shoutout and I hope it encourages her fans to check out Stevie and the Mac (which they really should know)..... even as I'm jealous that she's heard In Your Dreams already!!??

For some reason, when I heard the Dog Days are Over, I went and downloaded the song very quickly. I thought it sounded new and fresh. Then I saw the video and flipped. When I think of Florence I think of that movie the Fifth Element because there is a futuristic rock element to their music, very modern, yet, very elemental. I think they are on the edge of a new type of classic rock. Her voice just cuts through the air like a knife.

I'm sure that Stevie knows Florence is a fan. Stevie is very smart and she is fighting for the legacy of her band. Glee, Moonlight, Oprah.... She is managing to get her name out there with current trends and Florence is one of those trends. I'm sure she is extremely flattered that Sylvia likes her. It's funny but women in music are still citing Stevie as an influence, instead of a lot of those women from the 90s.

Nice shout out here and I think that yes, Florence clearly loves Stevie's music and is a fan of In Your Dreams. I think picking out that she din't actually say she liked the album is a bit ridiculous. Come on, it's very clear what she thinks from the passage.

When I first heard "Dog Days Are Over" it totally reminded me of old Jefferson Airplane. (which I never cared for) But, I respect that Florence and the Machine are trying to do something different in the music scene (well, sort of.).

I'm not famaliar with Florence and her machine.. but I will definitely check out their music just to see.
I really dig how she described "In Your Dreams"...

...it's funny, I've been very patient waiting for some new Stevie Nicks.. but the closer it gets.. wow... it's, like, all I keep thinking about.. I just want to hear it!!! :]

Her sound is very Jefferson Airplane. I love that, though--such a big, classic voice, so unlike the autotuned crap we're spoon-fed these days.

I'm also completely obsessed with her 70's rockstar style. Her grammy dress might be my favorite red carpet outfit of the year:

You are right! It really is Jefferson Airplane with a modern twist. I loved Jefferson Airplane. White Rabbit, Somebody to Love and Winds of Change remind me of Stevie. I always wished those were her songs.

I like FW enough, but the fact that she's been riding the wave of the one album for 3 years is absolutely ridiculous. She hasn't proven herself yet imo.
Also, the fact that she's heard IYD already shows how 'in' with the industry she's become.
+Wtf was she doing at the Oscars? So out of place.Everyone of those industry brown-nosers can go s*ck a d*ck

you know, your kind of right about that

from 1979 to 1989, she put out 8 albums with fleetwood mac or solo, she worked her ass off, she had to tour for that crap too.

First of all, no need to say that last bit about any artist. That's pretty crude, especially about a musician you claim to like well enough. I would hate to see what you have to say about the ones you really dislike...

And I'm not seeing how having heard IYD makes her some repulsive brown-noser. The fact that she was at the Oscars and in RS and able to comment on the musicians who have inspired her means that she's more of a presence in the music world than she was before. She's gotten attention for a number of reasons, but mainly for her talent. So yes, she's receiving more exposure. But why is that criminal? Should she be required to shun the music industry? Why would she want to? What purpose would that serve?
By all means, judge her if it becomes clear she's compromising her music and integrity for the industry. But until that happens, I really can't imagine what there is to complain about.

I just find it really funny that Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Florence Welch.... haven't found new heroes like Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette or Melissa Ethridge. I mean they are still using Stevie Nicks. She is still standing the test of time. I think it's major. She is being kept alive by these people and hopefully, when people hear this next album, she will even influence more people. I mean come on people. It's 2011. I can see how Stevie influenced Sheryl Crow because she is just a generation away, but we are talking a new crop of girls that should be building on Crow and Ethridge. It's sorta amazing.

Lots actually. The new batch, especially the Brit girls are heavily marketed. The whole setup is paper thin.
Remember Amy Winehouse?. . .5 years since that infamous record.Truly chewed up and spat out. Will she finish that 3rd album? Will anyone care?
They're trying to put Ellie Goulding out there now in the States when she should really be in the studio.
They all know they're on borrowed time in the business so are milking it for all their ONE record's worth.By all means carry on ladies. . . .I won't be missing 'em.
In my honest opinion Florence has already blown it,so I feel perfectly entitled to express that.:)

It just goes to prove how uniquely original and talented Stevie Nicks is. The new female rockers of the late 80's and 90's were extension's of the 60's & 70's female influence,: Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, The Runaways, Debbie Harry, Heart. Pat Benatar. All these ladies were completely unique and deeply talented, that everyone after has been borrowing bits and pieces. I'm not the least bit surprised that today's female artists are still looking back 2 or 3 generations still. I don't think that 10 to 15 year explosion of original female talent will ever be topped again. The references will continue and only grow deeper once Stevie has passed beyond this world. And female rockers/singers will continue to explore Stevie's flawed but undeniable huge impact & influence in varying degrees for decades to come.

I think the brit artist are different because they still actually craft music. The reason they're not successful is because in the US we're so, "follow up right now." I swear Britney's next album is probably already written and planned out. I love the english bands. They work MUCH harder than our most popular artists.

And with Amy W... well after a song like Rehab, who DIDN'T see her going off the deep end. Adele is solid, and even if her time in the US is limited, I think she'll still thrive in her home market.

Adele is another example of influences that cannot be denied. She is refreshing in the current pop market, but thats not saying much. She borrows a little from Dusty, some Laura Nyro , and a bit of Carole King and some Stax Records. I wonder if her influences are organically intentional or she or her label/producers have done their homework to push her in that direction. Either way, Adele is definitely being groomed. Florence comes across as being a little more organically influenced than Adele, but others are right, Florence still has a lot to prove with her next outing. Time will tell.

Is Adele writing her own songs. I could give two turds about singers. I think they are great musicians but I want singer/songwriters to make a comeback. To me singer/songwriters are artists and great singers are just great musicians.

I liked Chasing Pavements and her new song is nice, but she is not blowing me out of the water. Florence seems to be more of the real thing to me

She does, but her label insisted 21(Adele's 2nd record) be heavily co-written with a bumper crop of the new latest hitmaker/songwriters of the moment to make sure the record was a good as it got. She's absolutely, not so subtly, being groomed. And it's working, thanks in large part to an audience starving for something sounding not artifically produced.;)

In other words her songs are pooh and she is surrounded by a team of hit making writers. As far authenticity, is that Britians claim to fame. They said the same thing about Duffy and Amy Whinehouse. Borrowing from the past doesn't make you an original or authentic. It looks like Adele is following the same RETRO path as Duffy and Amy Whinehouse for success.

"It's you...
ONLY YOU...

I had to ask my German grandmother what that meant in 1984.

"I'm losing my heart for you
Now i'm about to lose my life... mein schmerz..."

I'd start veering into "Excellent Birds" territory, but you KNOW that I'm not perfect (BUT~ I'm perfect... FOR YOU!), so I'd better keep this from slipping into Chit Chat!

And veering even further into chit chat... Hey, Stevie & Kate have released several albums near the same time:

Hounds Of Love and Rock A Little ~ 1985
The Other Side Of The Mirror and The Sensual World ~ 1989
In Your Dreams May 3, 2011 and Director's Cut May 17, 2011

And Street Angel was supposed to be released in Fall of 1993, when The Red Shoes was released. And even The Red Shoes had to go back and get tweaked, because the US record company wasn't happy with it that Summer.

In defense of Adele, she was the sole writer on 7 out of 12 songs on her first CD, co-writer on the rest, plus one Bob Dylan cover. 19 sold millions worldwide and her tour was a sell-out. She won two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal. I've seen her twice in concert and she's absolutely incredible and really personable and funny.

On her new CD, the first to pass the million mark this year, she wrote the lyrics and collaborated on the music with a handful of writers. Pat Benatar, Heart, Aretha, Joan Jett, etc. all benefited from the contributions of hit songwriters.

Is she being groomed for superstardom? Yes, she is. Everyone with potential for long-term success is groomed, and their "brand" (I hate writing that, but it is the music business) is developed. Part of that is building an image and shaping public perception.

What is gross is how LiveNation is exploiting her success by holding back tickets and selling them on the secondary market. Her upcoming show at House of Blues in Boston - where I live - sold out in minutes. Capacity is 2,500. Tickets were $27 and impossible to get. The same day they went on sale, hundreds were posted on secondary sites linked to Ticketmaster. On StubHub and eBay, the lowest price is $350 a ticket. Most are $600.

I like Adele, Her label very smartly had her collaborate on her 2nd record to capitalize on her Grammy win and momentum she was building after her 1st record, as well as her long term career. And it looks like it's all paying off handsomely! I have tickets to see Adele at a small theatre late May here in Denver, tickets were dirt cheap and I cannot wait. It will be my 1st time seeing her "live" and I'm totally expecting a knock down performance, I cannot wait. But I must admit, I am suffering a little Adele fatigue, She's becoming so overexposed.

Of course you have a right to express your opinion. I don't need you to like Florence. But yeah, I object to your statement that she can "s*ck a dick."

And again, I'm just not sure why marketing has to deplete any artistic value. Yes, talented people with buzz are marketed. That's the way it's always been. Music is a business. When that compromises the artistic value, absolutely, I'm disappointed. But I don't think it always has to. And I don't think that having buzz means an artist has lost his or her value.

But whatever--listen, I really don't need you to like Florence Welch or Adele or Amy Winehouse c. 2006. Seriously, I couldn't care less. Florence and Adele are getting plenty of press and I have no personal investment in their careers aside from my hope that they continue to make music (regardless of buzz levels) because I think these women are tremendously talented. Whether they receive attention from the Oscars or Rolling Stone or Bryan on the Ledge won't change my opinion.

I was responding to your comment that Florence Welch is a brown-noser who can "s*ck a d*ck" because it was a gross, unnecessary, vulgar thing to say. It would be a gross thing to say about any female artist.

But it was exceptionally bizarre because we haven't even heard her new cd yet! Maybe she's lose her artistic integrity. Maybe she won't. Maybe you'll love it and I'll hate it. No one knows! That's my point! But definitely, reserve personal attacks on her artistry until you've heard it. When you have, judge for yourself! Then call her a brown-noser or whatever else. But until you have reason to believe that she's been marketed/compromised/whatever, it's just kind of gross to insult the woman in that way.

Don't know how familiar you are with M&P, but "fat like Mama Cass" is a line from their song Creeque Alley. I don't think Jonadalar was saying Adele is as fat as Mama Cass was (she isn't), just quoting the line and saying how nice it is to see artists who have made it on vocal talent and don't conform to certain starndards of beauty (although I think Adele is lovely).

At least, that's what I took from it. I'm obviously a huge fan of M&P and I adore Adele, so I hope there was no derisive intention.

I don't need reason to believe. . I've watched her career from day 1, i've read the lies she was forced to spin for the likes of Q magazine to give her an edge,i've seen her go from ' indie underground' queen to walking the red carpet . . .all off the back of one record.
When I refer to FW it's more a they-the management and business people telling her what to say, where to go and what to do. . .very little of what I say is aimed at her the person, because she hasn't even got control over everything she's become so far.In fact it scares her,she said that once.

the fact that she's been riding the wave of the one album for 3 years is absolutely ridiculous. She hasn't proven herself yet imo.

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately this seems to be the case with many people now. Lady GaGa!! While the songs may be great, such huge fame and hype after one album is a bit ridiculous. Come on. Let's see where you go from here and if you can maintain a career.

Exactly!
Always been a fan of 'catalogue' artists that you can follow up their careers and go to the shows and actually have memories attached to the songs you're hearing live rather than flash-in-the-pan artists

I like FW enough, but the fact that she's been riding the wave of the one album for 3 years is absolutely ridiculous.

The album hasn't even been out 2 years yet since it was released in July 2009. It's not exactly out of the ordinary for an artist nowadays to tour and promote an album for that long, especially one that has taken so long to break into the public's conciousness.

They've actually been working on the follow up since 2010, it's just that "Lungs" only broke in the US at the end of last year and that's where their focus has been. It makes sense for them to get out there and promote it while they have the chance and while the record is hot. It never really took off here in the UK until about 5 months after release, it also took time to break in countries such as Australia, New Zealand and several others in Europe.I don't think there is anything ridiculous about them going out on the road to tour and promote a record for a couple of years. It would be stupid for an artist to drop promotion for their current album that's slowly breaking through in order to go and record and release their second just because their first has been out a year or so. Might as well lay the foundation down, build up the fan base and then release the follow up.

I agree about her having a lot to prove on her next album. Apparently it's going to be more dance based.

Much of it had been around since '08 I mean..the singles started coming, the videos and that, the promotion started way back then around Summer. There were around 4 videos out by the time the album even dropped.
But yeah I hear ya, she did lots of the festivals in '09 and then repeated it all 2010 then there were the re-releases,redone video(s) and more.. it's all a bit tiresome when you've been watching from early on.
The biggest fail for me is the potential loss of momentum..the promo stretches so far for some artists it's though they've forgotten who they are by the time all is said & done.
Word has it she/they have only just this week/last week entered the studio to properly record..album will likely not be out until 2012, now that's a stretch.Hope the fans stay interested in her,it's a fickle industry after all.
Anyhow a dance based sound would be great!

To me singer/songwriters are artists and great singers are just great musicians.

I couldn't disagree more. What is your definition of an artist? Aren't musicians artists and artists musicians? I think of Linda Ronstadt, who doesn't write any of her own songs but is amazing at interpreting those of others. And she's not the only one, the list goes on and on and on...

its just me, they didn't create the words, the song wouldn't of happened, Linda Rondstadt is a great interpertar, and that's all in my book, I still buy her music.

So, she's not also a great singer? Do you consider opera singers artists? I'm sorry, but your logic doesn't follow.

Agreed. Linda is an amazing singer, but I'd be a bigger fan if she were a songwriter. You'd think there would have to be enough talent in there for her to compose, since she's got such and an impressive catalog of music covered.

Oh please, shut up about Linda Ronstadt. So this being the reason she's not in the 'R&R Hall of Fame' is beyond old.

That crack that runs the place needs to pull that stick out of his ass.

Linda has written songs in the past, just not all the big hits.

Welch has additionally named Fleetwood Mac pop/rock songstress Stevie Nicks as a musical, fashion, and general influence. A Huffington Post entertainment article quotes her as telling a reporter that “I’m pretty passionate about Stevie Nicks from her vogue to her voice. i prefer watching her on YouTube and her recent performances, the method she moves and everything.” Welch will typically be seen as one paying homage to Nicks’ famous billowing and gypsy stage dress.

What a weirdo. Probably drug-addled or experiencing psycho-sexual decay. She's a neuralgic mess.

Tonight on Fashion Police they said that Florence always tries to emulate Stevie Nicks and wear something floaty. They showed a brief picture of Stevie as they discussed Florence's outfit.

I just saw F&TM a few weeks ago, and she was amazing. I was really looking forward to seeing her and the wait paid off. I felt that she emulated a very current "nicksian" tribute on stage. Flowy outfit, and a semi Stevie stage panache, but entirely herself. Just mho.

Massive Florence fan and her love of Stevie adds to it massively.. She mentions her in majority of her articles.. Here in Australia she is massive and is aptly titled the Stevie Nicks of the Twilight generation by Rolling Stone Aus.

I noticed that since this thread was last active Florence and The Machine have put out Ceremonials and too much success.. A remix with Calvin Harris has currently been #1 in UK which would be her 3rd or 4th single off said album..

And in defence of riding off of 1 album prior to Ceremonials that is just plain wrong.. Extensive touring around the world (at MANY music festivals around the globe) as well as separate tours of different nations.

Constantly making music whether they were covers or demos etc

I just think it is really unfair to to suggest she didn't deserve the Fame she initially got because she had only released 1 official record labeled album..

As someone said Lungs took a long time to reach all corners of the globe

Five Musicians Setting the Tone at Fashion Week

Florence Welch
With her fashion magazine covers, much-discussed collaborations with Gucci and Chanel and status as one of Anna Wintour's chosen ones, Florence Welch represents a relatable update on Kate Bush's ghostly, tower-voiced maiden prototype. Her ruby-hued halo of hair, six -foot-tall stature and icy complexion make almost any garment look commanding, a quality in a muse designers die for. But Welch's flair for Stevie Nicks-level drama – sweeping fabrics, columns of dark velvet, Art Deco gowns – is why people truly gravitate to her style, and in part why celestial evening gowns have come back into vogue for Fall 2012. Expect emerald hues, navy silks and purples to find their way into eveningwear for Spring.

I've been waiting about 2 years to see Florence. The wait will finally be over tommorow at the Sundome at FSU Tampa. :]
The most recent videos I've watched on youtube of this current tour are fantastic. She seems to be having a great time on stage and alot of interaction with the fans. Of course I also like her comments and admiration for Stevie. The live cover of The Chain is pretty cool also.

I'm so excited for you! I was all set to see her again in October in Northern Cal. but then the Stevie thing came out. I love Florence and want to see her again, but damnit if SN doesn't trump any other going on's in my life! lol. Can't wait to hear what you think.
On her rendition of the Chain, at first I was all over it, then I kind of didn't like it. It's such a group song that it's weird to hear one vocal. Re-visiting it, yea, it's pretty fabulous.
