See, this IS going to get ugly. "Sugar Daddy" is a great song. Would have made a great last track for a pop album. And represents a near-definitive Myth of a sociological phenomenon (it would later be replaced by the Pet Shop Boys' "Rent").

Worst Lyrics - Blue Letter cuz it wasn't written by LSC

The "used to likes" - Still love them all (but see below's everybody's fav)

Songs that could have been better - none

Everybody's favorite but not mine - ISA - I recognize its brilliance and it is the perfect closer for an album/artists of greater ambition than they are usually recognized. But I wouldn't exactly call it my faaaavorite--it's a touch pretentious

Much better performed live - World Turning - Surprisingly fun when you're there in person (not to listen to on a bootleg or watch at home though)

Overall least favorite - World Turning

Worst Lyrics - "Warm Ways." I can't be the only one who shudders at "You made me a woman tonight."

The "used to likes" - "My Little Demon." After a while I realized that it was that song on The Dance that was separating me from "Silver Springs," so it is always skipped now.

Songs that could have been better - "Smile at You." Puhlease.

Everybody's favorite but not mine - "I Don't Want to Know." It is utterly forgettable.

Much better performed live - "Silver Springs"

Overall least favorite - "I'm So Afraid." It's plodding and overlong, especially in concert. Definitely a bathroom break song.

Worst Lyrics - I like the song 'Sugar Daddy' but the lyrics are a little 'off'.

I suspect what you might be responding to is that, to me, on this song Christine's voice sounds more like it did in recordings prior to 1975's white album.

Anyway, maybe I'm projecting: that's the hump I had to get over to finally appreciate it for all of its greatness.

This is like pulling teeth--I love almost the entire white album. Their most even set, IMO.

Worst Lyrics - Warm Ways--I like the song, but like Hejira I invariably wince at "you made me a woman."

The "used to likes" - None, really.

Songs that could have been better - Monday Morning

Everybody's favorite but not mine - I'm So Afraid

Much better performed live - Rhiannon (once upon a time)

Worst Lyrics - I think Christine is pretty weak, lyrically, most of the time but this album is close to her worst. Honestly, has anyone ever made sex sound quite so flaccid as in 'Warm Ways'?

The "used to likes" - I still like LB's very high, sweet voice on 'Crystal', and I massively prefer it to his present singing-through-a-mouthful-of-vomit stylee. But I don't really like the song any more. 'Crystalline knowledge' is so naff it could've been written by C. McVie.

Songs that could have been better - Most of CM and LB's tracks would have benefited from making Stevie's backing vocals audible?

Everybody's favorite but not mine - 'I'm So Afraid'. Awww, diddums.

Much better performed live - Well, this would have to be 'Rhiannon', back in the day. I quite like the piano intro of later years, though, too.

Overall least favorite - The ghastly 'Sugar Daddy', a song that amply demonstrates why Christine McVie's proper place was always right where she started: filling in a bit of bluesy piano in her boyfriend's pub band.

^^^ OK, OK, I admit that last bit about Christine was harsh. I admit it. But it's not a million miles away from the sort of thing the woman has said about herself from time to time. I mean, does anyone read the Blue Letter Archives at all any more? I just went and had a quick look and found this:

"Let's face it, I'm an adequate amateur at best. At heart, I still like to play the blues more than anything else."
C. McVie, interview in "Contemporary Keyboard" (1980)

But it was harsh, and as was predicted earlier in the thread, this type of poll does provoke negativity. ButterCookie, you've said the same yourself on the Stevie forum.

C. McVie, interview in "Contemporary Keyboard" (1980)Chris was referring only to her piano skills.

I agree with her self-assessment; but it doesn't take into consideration something that has become clear over the years: the style in her conceptions & executions.

Imagine a far greater technician of the keyboard -- Roy Bittan of the E Street Band -- writing the electric piano & organ parts for Dreams. The style would have been all wrong.

Imagine a far greater technician of the keyboard -- Roy Bittan of the E Street Band -- writing the electric piano & organ parts for Dreams. The style would have been all wrong.

Her piano skills were partly what I was referring to, too, as part of my wider opinion that 'Sugar Daddy' exemplifies very well the bottom end of what she was able to accomplish in terms of composition in her years in FM.

The bit about her proper place being in a pub band was harsh, as I've conceded. But I really would urge all Ledgies to spend a little time reading the archives on this board, because it's easy to build up an image of someone that is quite at variance with most things they've ever said or done in public.

For example, read the first four articles in the Christine section of the Blue Letter Archives and then tell me that that incarnation of her doesn't make you feel just a little bit queasy? She was a feminist's nightmare. So was Stevie, up till at least Tusk, and in many ways still is.

i think you might be mixing typical British self deprecating ways of expression (recent Colin Firth interviews and acceptance speeches are good examples), very different from trying to project a grandiose picture of yourself in order to sell your qualities (we are used to hearing that from people like Stevie ("highly successful cleaning lady" "first woman rocking" etc) or Lindsey ("visionary" - even though that originated from RS, but he does love repeating it), and Mick even though British seems to have some similar inclinations:rolleyes:). that said, i have to admit i haven't read the interviews with Christine you are referring to but she strikes me as a self-deprecating dry-humor type.

I don't think Christine's interviews are exactly at variance with the public's perception of her. If anything, I might think of her as being at variance with herself. Meaning she sometimes describes her role as one thing, when in reality it was quite a lot more.

I don't know if it was an article or an essay someone wrote, but I recall reading a discussion of the passive, pliant, needy nature of Christine's song lyrics. Oh, think about me, every once in a while, type pleas. I'll be here waiting. And of course, many of her songs do have that element. Even Lindsey said that he thought Christine's influence made Stevie's music less agressive and masculine than it had been before, which I found an odd observation. In fact, I might argue that he made Christine more feminine sometimes (i.e. Hold Me).

At any rate, my reaction to that article about the docile nature of Christine's song lyrics was to think, well that's fine but look at her life. She got to where she was on strength, skill and talent and I don't think she played second fiddle to anyone in that band, man or woman. She might have been a doormat in her love life and maybe her lyrics reflected that, but in her professional life she was not at all subservient. For me her songs didn't have to make a statement, because the life she led as a musician and songwriter, spoke for her. She didn't have to talk about equality, because she exemplified it.

And many of the things I know about her, aren't something I've heard her discuss in interviews. She doesn't talk about how she pretty much led rehearsals for the group. Kept things on track. I hear her do that on demos. If I listened to her in interviews, I would think she just sat back in a corner being a quiet part of the rhythm section and that wasn't the case. Before joining FM, I don't think she was just sitting at home waiting for John to return from the road and give her a sense of completion either. I think what she said and did were sometimes two different things, and one doesn't necessarily contradict the other, it just provides a fuller picture.

Christgau might be the (original) source for the Stevie-Christine dichotomy in his review of Rumours (http://www.robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=Fleetwood+Mac):

[T]he cute-voiced woman writes and sings the tough lyrics and the husky-voiced woman the vulnerable ones

I disagree with Christgau. To me, Stevie's songs signify a far more delicate emotional state--she can't get over Lindsey and she keeps the battle going (dooming him to not be able to get over her) in "Silver Springs," "Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman" (she's driven to cocaine by heartache!), "I Don't Want To Know" (she can't handle the truth... a repeated Rumours motif). Meanwhile, Christine, says to her ex: "Don't Stop!" (get over it!), on "Songbird" she bears the collective's pain through her muse, "You Make Loving Fun"--she's over it and feeling good and comfortable with her womanly needs, and I've written on the blues-bearing complexity of "Oh, Daddy" (http://johndemetry.blogspot.com/2007/12/song-oh-daddy-songwriter-christine.html).

Christgau might be the (original) source for the Stevie-Christine dichotomy in his review of Rumours (http://www.robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=Fleetwood+Mac):

There is also a salon.com review of TISL that discusses this. It says that Christine has the solid vocal, the skills as a musician, the strength, while Stevie is the one in fluttery shawls, but Christine's lyrics beg, while Stevie's lyrics take command. She is Rhiannon. She is inaccessible. She is the one who leaves, not the other way around

Of course, you and I can think of exceptions to both of these rules that the Salon.com writer might not have the catalog of FM knowledge to know about.

I disagree with Christgau. To me, Stevie's songs signify a far more delicate emotional state--she can't get over Lindsey and she keeps the battle going

And I always feel that Christine's lyrics have an edge to them and are not as light as they sound. With Say You Love Me and Little Lies, for instance, I do see her in control, because she's letting herself be lied to. She does not believe that guy when he says that he loves her. She just wants to be wooed through the night. Doesn't mean that she denies the truth in the light of day. Deceive me for a little longer, until I'm ready to let go. I'll give you license to mislead. To me, that kind of gives her the power. It's not just please love me (although she does say that too in Why, for instance).

Then, I think of a song like Think About Me was written, knowing that you have Lindsey there. So, she's singing, oh yeah please think about me every once in awhile, if you can spare me a little minute. Whereas Lindsey comes in whooping and DEMANDS to be thought of. Hey you, I'm here and you better acknowledge it! The song lyrics have to be interpreted through the reading they're given and that reading isn't passive. Through the duet and the contrast between Lindsey and Christine's vocals, I think we are seeing both sides of Christine's personality, both readings of her lyrics.

And when I think of SYLM I wonder, why is the phrase, "say that you love me" within the song and the title is just "Say You Love Me." Obviously, the four words make a better, catchier title, so that's probably why. But in my head, I answer myself that it's because the title is a directive, an order and the lyrics within acknowledge that he said it. He said it, even if he didn't mean it. But if she knows he didn't, she's not being used.

Worst Lyrics - Sugar Daddy

The "used to likes" - All the ones I liked when I first bought the record I still like today. I've not gone off any.

Songs that could have been better - I want to say "Rhiannon". I love the album version, but a full on rock version like that classic 1976 performance would've been awesome. I guess I'll go with "Landslide". I don't think the magic of the song was really captured on the album version.

Everybody's favorite but not mine - Say You Love Me

The "used to likes" - Landslide. I used to love the song, but I've gotten sick of hearing it. It's a completely crass song to mention when talking about the Mac discography. Whenever somebody mentions that they're about to sing a Fleetwood Mac song on television, etc, you just know this one's rearing its ugly head again.

Songs that could have been better - World Turning is only served justice when performed live. It's too flat when held in the constraints of the album.

The "used to likes" - Landslide. I think I've just played it soooooooo much I'm tired of it and it doesn't mean the same thing to me as it use to. Maybe after giving it a break for a while I will come back to it ;)
Songs that could have been better - Sugar Daddy. I really want to like this song....but I can't.
Everybody's favorite but not mine - I'm So Afraid :sorry:
Much better performed live - It's a tie between I'm So Afraid and Rhiannon. ISA on the white album is just....bleh. I can't stand it, but live I like it. Rhiannon is alright but was better live in the early days. However, I think The Dance version is my favorite.
Overall least favorite - Warm Ways...
