If by Girl Group / Band you're restricting it to those with only females included (ie, not just a female vocalist, but with male musicians) I gotta go super old-school and go for the Supremes;

Ditto. All the girl groups I can think of off the top of my head are pretty shallow and vapid. Not m'thang at all...

1. The Bangles--first group I ever loved. I owned all of their cds by the time I was 7. If I ever have a daughter, Susanna will be a serious contender for her name.
2. The Spice Girls--yeah, I'm dating myself.
3. The Dixie Chicks--yeah, I know. But Natalie Maines has an incredible voice.

Close behind: The Go-Go's, the Shangri-Las, pretty much any of the Motown groups.

I don't really listen to their music, but my best friend's dad works closely with WP so I've long heard stories and finally got to meet them a couple of months ago. And seriously--sweetest women! Loved them all, esp. the Wilson sisters (Carnie is hilarious). They ended the night with a few songs (two with Michelle Phillips) and it was just gorgeous.
Sorry--that was probably pretty random, but I just thought I'd share.:o

Can we say Tegan and Sara? Maybe they aren't your typical "girl group" and they do have some guys play some instruments, but it is mostly them and the only girl group I really care to listen to.

That's so cool, thanks for sharing that!! WP are amazing! Fans want them to release a new album with new material (which they haven't sinse 1992). Their last two albums were a Christmas one & a 'remakes' album called 'California in 2004. They might have a new one out this year!:D

I love Carnie, she's so funny & has a great sense of humor! My fave song from them is actually not one of their hits but a track from the debut album called 'Eyes Like Twins'. The lyrics & harmonies are killer! :)

Ahh, now there's a girl group with some real substance and absolutely unique talent! I'm still bitter about how their career was instantly ruined by an utterly idiotic mob mentality.

You know I was never really a "fan" of that record, but any time I hear those songs I am immediately transported back to 1990.

I'm not ashamed to admit that at the age of 21 when they were really popular, I was a huge fan & was in the fan club!

I LOVE my Spice Girls Lollipops!:shocked::laugh::rolleyes:

1 - The Go Go's (LOVE them! They were also pretty groundbreaking. Beauty and the Beat was the first album entirely written and performed by women to top the charts)

2 - Girls Aloud / Heart (I couldn't choose between them. I love Ann and Nancy!)

3 - Dixie Chicks

Of course if I asked whom your fave female 'fronted band' was, my answer would be Heart!

These ladies along with Stevie are the reasons why I believe in love! :)

How's that for making me sound old?

ALL TIME: The Supremes

CONTEMPORARY: Girls Aloud (find "The Loving Kind" for pure bliss and their producers, Xenomania, are/were the best pop factory of the modern era)

This infuriates me too. I've been a fan of theirs for years - Natalie's voice is fantastic. Louie - have you seen Shut Up and Sing - the documentary about the fallout of said mob mentality and the recording of the follow-up album, Taking The Long Way? It's a great, yet infuriating/disturbing film.

I was hoping that their career wouldn't have been ruined by such events, and I was really happy when the next album did so well (it's brilliant!) but they've disappeared since then so maybe it did ruin them after all.

I think more than anything it all affected Natatlie and so she has chosen to take a real back seat in the music business now. That's why Emily and Martie did their album as Court Yard Hounds, because Natalie said she wasn't ready/didn't want to return to the music buiness full time. Then there was the tour-that-never-really-was with the Eagles. Take those things together and, sadly, the Chicvks may be done. Such a shame!!

By the way - the Court Yard Hounds album is really good, especially after a few listens.

But, The Runaways! Joan Jett has taught me more than my own mother and almost as much as Debbie Harry.

Hands down The Pointer Sisters. There would be no En Vogue, Destiny's Child, etc. without them. Not only did they have chart-topping success but they inspired a generation to come of young black female girl groups. Hits like Jump (for my love), I'm So Excited, He's So Shy, Automatic, etc. represent their critical and commercial success.
Sadly, they suffered with many personal issues and the line-up changed over the years. June Pointer (often referred to as the lead singer although they switched back and forth) died in 2006 after years of drug abuse and trouble with the law but their music will live on in my heart forever. R.I.P. June

Great choice. I prefer 2 Become 1 though.

I cracked up when I heard 2 become 1 a few years ago and realized just how explicit it is:eek:. All of that sailed right over my 8-year-old head when it first came out!

Now when my friends comment on how jarring it is to watch second graders dancing to wildly inappropriate Pussycat Dolls songs, I just start singing, "Be a little bit wiser, baby. Put it on, put it on..."

It does scream early 2000's, but I still like some of the songs. I'll play Forever about every six months or so just for a little nostalgia.

A few girl groups come to mind but as far as big vocals on some songs right up there with Ann Wilson, Vixen could belt em out.

Do the Judds count? I used to love them when I was a little kid.

My grandmother was a seamstress, and would make my cousins and me a ton of Barbie clothes. There was one dress she made that was red, short, and really poofy on the bottom (the bodice was tight). All very 80s. I think Naomi Judd wore something like it, so of course it was referred to as, "the Judds one". :o
