One of my friends is an intern at Clear Channel, and she got her hands on a promo copy of In Your Dreams. She won't risk burning the entire cd for me (THOUGH I AM GOING OVER TO HER PLACE TO LISTEN TONIGHT), but she sent me a copy of For What It's Worth. It's even better than I expected. I'll report back later with a full review on the album, but I'm sharing this now:

Aww. You're nice and new. I don't want to ruin the ledge for you, so I can't prank you. It's a Rick Roll with a script that puts Tom Petty's The Waiting into emergency boxes that you can't get rid off until you go through every word.
Because I can't resist the bad pun, it was worth it.

The way her voice breaks in the line."you saved my life I won't forget it" is heartbreaking.I can understand how just this line would be so poignant to you now.I have a friend that posts on Seven Wonders who just lost his mom to cancer I have know him for 30 years. He is holding out until Tuesday to listen to the album I have a feeling he will feel the same when he hears this song.

I'm going to sound so sappy, but this is one of the things I love about Stevie's songwriting--a single line, or the tone and emotion of a song can touch you, even when the central subject is completely different (sororal vs. romantic love).
I'm glad it's meant something to you, and I wish you and your sister all the best.

On my first couple of listens to the Rolling Stone stream a few days ago, my initial impression of FWIW was that it had a nice melody and lyrics but wasn't a standout. I also wasn't crazy about the vocal (a bit too close to the "Destiny Rules" granny voice in spots).
Yet as the days went on I couldn't get the song out of my head. Something about this song really sticks with you and it may be one of her best compositions ever. I still have some reservations about her vocal, but overall this is shaping up to be one of my favorite SN songs.

For What It's Worth sounds like something from the Buckingham Nicks. Or maybe a distant cousin of I Don't Want To Know.
Love the lead and harmony vocal on this track (not a big fan of the shrill Sharon and Lori back up singing - I think Stevie's best when she harmonizes with her own singing).
Also love how the writing on this sounds like it could have been a Jimmy Webb song.
I wish she would record more like this.

I agree with everything you said here. For What It's Worth has become my favorite on this album. It gets stuck in my head for hours, even days. The self-harmonizing just makes the song even better despite the already outstanding lyrics and instrumentation.
I don't miss Sharon and Lori at all on this album, to tell the truth.

I wasn't implying that they weren't - what I meant was that they aren't as obvious, or in the forefront the way they are on all of Stevie's past solo albums. Their harmonies are far more subdued, and in the background where they should be.
The Nightmare, Cry Wolf and Love Is Like A River are great examples of the way I don't like Sharon and Lori doing background vocals on a song.

Normally Sharon and Lori would be on virtually every song. But I'm only hearing them on:
Secret Love
In Your Dreams (sparingly)
New Orleans (sparingly)
Moonlight
Annabel Lee
You May Be the One
I'm still not sure if they are on "My Heart;" I do believe that Stevie is doing the high harmony on that song!
So they are on fewer than half of the songs on the album... which means that Stevie is doing a lot more of her own harmonies. And I lurv when she does that!

Love seeing all this FWIW love. You all will need to show up and vote in the In Your Dreams survivor, because this song has been getting some votes the past few episodes! ;) It is definitely in the top half of songs for me on IYD, but I feel like the title track would make a better single. It is more commercial.

Put down the crack pipe, people; this is not a hit song. Yes, it's lovely and it's a worthy component of IYD. But it's got no chance on country radio, pop radio or rock radio. It's just too mellow. And I can't think of a less melodic song, to be quite honest. No wonder it took ten minutes to write- the entire first verse is a single note.
And isn't this like the 87th thread devoted to this song? Seriously?

I agree with the majority, here - definitely single material. This song blows me away with it's simple message. The best hit songs are the ones that people can relate too.
If James Taylor can have a hit with anything he's ever released, this song could most definitley be a hit for Stevie.

This could DEFINITELY be a hit. I sing all the time to myself and of all the songs on IYD that I've been humming and mumbling, this was the only song I got asked about, like what is it and who's it by, etc. It's catchy and sweet and relatable.

Yeah, I find the number of new FWIW threads started to be alarming, but doesn't that tell you something? Scientific proof! It seems to have captured more attention than any of the other songs. More people seem to think that it's got commercial attention. The masses are CRAVING this song!
Seriously, I think it's the most catchy on the album. I'm not saying it's the one I like most, but I do think it's the most likable overall. My only hesitation is due to its strong country flavor. It leans more that way than, say, That's Alright did.
I definitely think it could be a hit on country stations and, then, maybe it would cross over.

This is a cool Stevie song but not a hit on countryradio or anywhere else. Hits are hooky with a melody or lyric and this is neither. I like the song alot too...but this will not make it on radio today.

I gave it to a friend of mine on a mix CD - and she said she listened to it for five days straight until her girlfriend threatened to rip the cords out of the speakers. Then it was stuck in her head for another week.
Definitley hit material - it just needs to be put out there. Like I said, if James Taylor can have hits with snoozer songs like You've Got A Friend and Fire And Rain - Stevie could have a hit with this. All it takes is that lyric that people relate to.
Who hasn't wanted to pack their stuff and leave their life behind to be with someone else? If you say you haven't, you're lying.

Don't share your opinion at all.
But, I can wax poetic on FWIW.
Okay. First, I like the traveling sound of it. I like songs that make you feel the sense of movement, of going down roads and feeling the wind in your hair. But, this goes a bit beyond that. It also expresses (to me) the tedium of travel. The sense of responsibility to be there (wherever "there" may be), but maybe a certain lack of enthusiasm that once was there and...now...not so much.
BUT, it's also a reflection on a vulnerable time that has passed. It's looking back and embracing all the wonderful things she did in her life because someone simply stood by her during that time.
For me, personally, I've had people (and beings) stand by me and literally help save my life, too. So, when she sings the "you saved my life, I won't forget it" line with that small catch in her voice...something in my gut just kind of turns...in a good way. It's life-affirming, friendship-love-caring affirming and...just plain 456 shades of awesome (IMO).
And, it also makes me want to smack her hands when she does the doofy dance for 4- year olds during a song that means so much to me. But, hey, her song, her dance, her life...(besides, I can look at the video now;-)

THIS! Plus I was struck by the simple yet beautiful acoustic arrangement immediately upon 1st listen. When I listened to RS pre-release stream I nearly fell out of my chair with tears in my eyes at how beautiful the whole song was. I knew at that moment the rest of the record was going to be brilliant. I was smiling through my tears and so proud of Stevie in that instant!

I don't love this song, but sometimes I like it. It's soo simple and seems like it was pulled right out of the pages of her diary that it feels like anyone could of written it. It is not as sophisticated as other songs on the album. There are no change ups that take the song in a different direction and keep it interesting and there is no special ending. There is however, an honesty and truthfulness that reminds me of After of Glitter Fades.
I think people who love this song are really into the lyrics, not the the tune itself. However, songs can work because of the music (Ghosts are Gone) or rest on heartfealt lyrics like this one does. I think the edited version is punchier and much better than the album version. I'm glad it is on the album. It provides a folksy twist. However, I don't believe it should be up front on the album. It was definitely sequenced wrong. This album should start with In Your Dreams.

People seem to love this song.
I do not.
It sounds deadly, droning, droopy, dull, sleepy, charmless, and monotonous to me. In the vein of Street Angel and Rose Garden, to my ears (sorry, I can't stand either of those).
Can anybody help me to see why it is so lovable?
Does anyone else out there share my opinion?
Deadly, droning,droopy...? Wow, bummer for you. What do you think of the other tracks?

This is a cool Stevie song but not a hit on countryradio or anywhere else. Hits are hooky with a melody or lyric and this is neither. I like the song alot too...but this will not make it on radio today.
I tend to difer on this~I listen to cr everday...if Kid Rock could do it, then so could she.

I agree. Some of the most indelible songs ever written have that 'anyone could've written this' quality to them. Listen to the Beatles much, and it's easy to forget that there was a time when 'Yesterday' or 'Can't Buy Me Love' didn't exist. Someone had to sit down and hum that melody whilst noodling on a guitar or at the keys. And there's sometimes a sense that what is plucked out of the air was actually waiting there to be plucked, somehow already in the collective unconscious, hence the word 'zeitgeist' and the lawsuits that sometimes follow when two or more people pluck the same thing (*cough* 'Sara' *cough*).
Anyway, that's by way to coming to your second point. I don't think anyone can generalise that much about why other people are drawn to something. It's a bit like saying you know why someone chose to marry their partner: you don't. You only know what you find attractive or repellent in that person. Personally, I love the music in FWIW. I enjoy its rolling cadence; as others have said, it's sense of movement. I do like the lyric, and I do think it's SN's vocal quality that stirs my emotions when I listen to it, but the music is underpinning all of that.
Glad this thread was bumped! :blob1:

Well, to me, FWIW is the worst track on the album. I understand people's favourable comments on FWIW, but I think it ranks among the worst things she has ever recorded.
It's the melody, the arrangement, the vocal - all are so dreary and flat. The melody is monotonous and goes nowhere, the arrangement takes the tedious melody and accentuates its draggy, heavy aspect, and the vocal seems an octave too deep and lifeless, the whole thing sounds like it is playing on the wrong speed.
All together, this makes it sound like a klonopin hymn, an old woman grumbling to herself, an engine dying slowly.

like the video, a bit different i guess. Though, in saying that, don't like the fake strumming of the guitar. tisk tisk
I like the song, simple.

Best song on In Your Dreams. Effortless, sincere, sweet and simple. Even when she sings it live it appears she can enjoy herself. Like landslide, FWIW is Stevie at her best and simplest

I really love this song, including the lyrics AND the music. There is something tender and very sincere about it that really pulls me in.

I really really love this song! Like people have said it's simple, sweet and a story I think everyone of us can relate to...even if it's only one line of the song. This song mentions being in a bus and going on tour and because of all the guitar work, you can really feel that in the song. I agree that this was a really good choice to be released as a single. And as much as Stevie's "mimes" annoy people, I actually love this song performed live and to me it has beaten the album version every time.

The way her voice sounds when she says " what you did was you saved my life. I won't forget it" Best moment on the whole album for me. Brings tears to my eyes every single time. I don't really care for it live though, it loses that something for me, especially with the hand motions.

Thanks for the info!
At one of her most recent shows she said she wanted to film the video on the PCH but Dave insisted on El Mirage. I wonder how Stevie's vision would have been different.

I've had the same reaction to this song on occasion. Most memorably when I heard the song for the first time!! That line & her inflection on the final "you saved my life...I wont forget it" slapped me hard!! Every synapse in my brain was firing that morning. I knew at that moment ("here I am dramatic") of listening to IYD in its entirety, that this was going to be the BEST Stevie Nicks record to come along in a long long time! The sweet sentiment, story, musical arrangement (YES, the arrangement is perfect for this song.) & delivery is perfection! (shut up darklinen;))
Stevie hasn't recorded a song so sincerely sweet and wise since..."Leather And Lace", "After The Glitter Fades", "Beauty & The Beast", "I Sing For The Things" and "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You". It's been a long time since Stevie delivered a song in this vein successfully!! Had "Love Is" been recorded as close to the demo was, that would have qualified imo, but the Pierre Marchand/Sarah McLachlan gloss distracts from the core of the song a speck.
And Yea!!! about the Vid...Its one of her best...that is for certain!
