Dude, I've been dying to start a thread on this whole topic for a while now so thanks! Especially with all this new stuff going on, they're everywhere! I'm always trying to get the lurkers to come out and play. I mean seriously, what do you have to lose? Once again lurkers, I dare you... and I promise, we won't bite (well most of us, anyway ;)).

Why are they lurking? What is the reasoning? When I see a stevie nicks or fleetwood mac site, I just sign up. Don't get it.

I was very shy and lurked for years because I felt my contributions would simply get lost in the very large sea that is the Ledge. The cliques intimidated me as well. But after joining and starting to become active, all of that went out the window. I really enjoyed sharing my thoughts and feelings, and eventually debating and befriending others. It's sooo much better to join and contribute to the Ledge than just watching from afar. So "come in out of the darkness" lurkers... it's a fun party here! :woohoo:

I suspect that a good chunk of these so-called "lurkers" are either ex-regulars, banned members or people belonging to other sites who, for whatever reason, hate to be associated with the Ledge and go on other boards to complain about it. Really... some of you haters need to get a life.

Nice to see the Ledge in "full swing" again. I was just telling my friend that it's like 1998 all over again with all the activity on the boards!

It's also quite possible that some people just have more interest in reading what people are saying that in chiming in themselves.

I lurked as well before I joined. I didn't want to waste my time joining a crappy board, so I checked out the membership.
What's the "vibe" of the board? Serious? Silly? Intellectual? Goofy? High energy? Laid back? Some or all of the above?
What's the demographic of the board? Is everyone a tween? A senior citizen? or is it a broad spectrum?
How do they treat newbies? Some communities are brutal on "newbies" who don't understand how message boards work and thus make netiquette blunders, ask "stupid" questions or questions that have been answered on the board a million times prior, etc.
How do they treat each other? Are there a lot of arguments and fights? Are there are a lot of judgmental people? Are there a lot of cliques?
If there are moderators, what are they like?
Finally, I lurked until I felt like there was a topic I wanted to reply to. I didn't want to post just for the sake of it. I think my first post was asking about Stevie's tour schedule for Trouble in Shangri-La.
Once I got up the nerve to join The Ledge, I enjoyed myself during the five years that I was a regular. I also encourage lurkers to sign up. If you don't like it, you can always go back to lurking.
I suspect that a good chunk of these so-called "lurkers" are either ex-regulars, banned members or people belonging to other sites who, for whatever reason, hate to be associated with the Ledge and go on other boards to complain about it. Really... some of you haters need to get a life.
Dang! Way to make the Ledge look good. lol
They could all be bots, you know. ;)
I lurked around a couple months before signing up. Now I'm signed up(obviously) but I have very lurkerish behaviors. So from a lurkerish/shy/insecure ledgie point of view these were/are some of my issues:
1. You must have a real grown up email address to sign up- not just a freebie gmail or aol or something. School emails work too I guess. Not everyone's job is cool with them using their work email to sign up (not that I would ever do that or anything).
2. I think I know a lot about the Mac but you guys know much much more. I don't want to say something wrong (or god forbid post something in the wrong thread) or say something that offends yall.
3. I worry that I'm not articulating my thoughts into words accurately. Durt, Durt, Durt.
4. I'm afraid that someone will think I'm a freak if I mention that I constantly wonder what Stevie smells like and if I ever meet her I'm going to sniff her...and I don't know what I will do if she smells bad.
5. I'm a shipper. There, I confess, I AM A SHIPPER. It's not the only thing that keeps me interested in the MAC, but yes, I'm a shipper until the bitter end baby.
Okay, I'll stop there. Silly to waste a bunch of time making silly excuses.
I think it would be nice to have a ledgie sponsor like in NA or AA (not that I know anything about that either- hehe.)

Yeah thats why I lurked for ages. I felt like I really didn't have a clue about FM or Stevie compared to some ledgies, but then I thought what the heck you have to start somewhere and I am learning more and more all the time :D

And sometimes a lurker is just a member who's not signed in...possibly because they're at work. Not that I would do that, of course, though for the record I'm not here right now :) Not that I post very often anyway, but I do jump in every now and then!

I'm not sure this is entirely true? I don't even have a 'real grown up email address', all of mine are web based like hotmail or yahoo or something of that sort. Pretty sure the one I used to sign up for The Ledge was yahoo...

I have been around for years on the Mac/Nicks boards. I stopped posting for the most part due to the fighting and bickering.
These are exciting times for Stevie fans! I am trying to enjoy every moment leading up to the release and the tour. I always hope for more new music from her and Mac, you never know when they will finally really retire.
Thanks for starting this thread! It's good to see people that normally keep quiet posting.

I understand what you mean Kena. I've been here for awhile but go through streaks of lurker behavior without replying to any threads for months. Sometimes my life is too busy to do much more than skim over what's going on, and over the years the intensity of my fanhood waxes and wanes. Also, I've never figured out what a shipper is. Can anybody help with that?
Thanks,

If nothing else, the ledge is pretty much the best place for the most up to date info on anything FM related. I cannot fathom why I read of fans on FB or whatnot wondering how a show went, what the set list was, when the next show is, etc when all you need to do is look here... And these people are not blind to the existence of this place. Wierdos...
As for lurking, what's the big deal? Not everyone has the desire to contribute. What are you missing out on by not being a member?

Thank you-I wonder how I missed the meaning of shipper for so long? Anywyas, I'm definately not one of those (even going so far as to think of shippers as being a little foolish (NO OFFENSE!!). Just think it's all part of the stage act now-after about 35-30 years of fandom there are certain things you get a little jaded about!
Thanks again Louie!

As for lurkers I think some people just don't want to talk in forums and prefer to lurk to just check out all the latest info. My brother is a huge Stevie/FM fan too and he has no interest at all in joining the ledge.

Lol. It wasn't TOO creepy... Hahaha(:
Okay. I'm gunna try to explain this as BEST as i can.!
Well..... when I was younger, my FAVORITE movie was Practical Magic (and it's still one of mine(; ). And my favorite song in it was Crystal. I remember always playing that same part with the song over and over again(:. I had always known EO17, SDMHA, and Dreams. But I never made the connection of realizing it was the same girl singing in the movie. So when I went to buy Crystal and IYEDB on Itunes last year, I found Rhiannon, GYOW, and YMLF. And I was just like, "OMG. I remember my mom and dad would always listen to these songs!" And then I just discovered more and more and more until my head was about to explode of Fleetwood Mac-ness! Lol. So now I'm obsessed(": You should all be proud. ;)

As far as the cliques go, they are still around. But as compared to around the SYW times it's not as bad. I used to get into it with some people, that I don't even remember who or what it was about. It seems to have calmed down a quite a bit.

I lurked for a looooooooooong time & eventually registered in 2007, but RARELY post anything. It's not that I'm the least bit shy, quite the opposite actually. My issue is that I had joined another Stevie board years ago & befriended quite a few people without realizing the cliques/weirdos/drama that I was stumbling into until it was too late. I had posted links on mediafire to numerous videos/demos that I uploaded & it seemed most anyone who took any interest in talking to me was simply after my collection & not really interested in anything other than what they could get out of me or to talk sh*t about others they didn't like on the board, etc. I frankly didn't have the time or patience to deal with it, so I dropped into obscurity & decided when I joined this board that it'd be less of a headache to simply lurk & avoid any B.S. ;)

Oh, I agree! There was a lot of toxicity on the board back then. And to be honest, the very people who today complain that the Ledge is not what it used to be are part of that toxicity. There was a period, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, when a good number of them either got banned or decided to leave on their own. I was like good riddance! But there is one individual from that era that I miss- Dissention. If the Ledge had a god, he would be sitting on the throne.

Word. I didn't post for quite a few years because of the hostile nature of the board and a rather nasty, vocal clique. The board may not be as edgy these days as compared to it's past, but I'll gladly take it's current friendly incarnation any day.

I guess we often look back nostalgically & put a golden halo around our past. But I will say that I like Michele best of the various owners.
I liked Distension, too. He up & split. The appeal of the conversation must not have had long-term staying power with him. With me, it's just the opposite. I'm as giddy with energy as I ever was over conversation. I loved conversation (by telephone & letter) in 1979 with other fans, talking about Tusk coming out, & I still love conversation (by Ledge, Facebook, & e-mail) with other fans, talking about whether anyone even remembers Tusk coming out.

Hello everyone. I have lurked on the Ledge coming on ten years now. I attended many many Say You Will shows and look back on those memories with such fondness. Welcome to the board, Katie -- if that is indeed an Elton John reference in the username, we should chat, I'm a big fan! :blob1:
I remember meeting some great people at the concerts in Dublin and being reminded that, in fact, not everyone in the Fleetwood Mac fan community, or even the online community, is on the Ledge. It's easy to get caught up in it all and think we're the only ones out there!

When I first found the Ledge, I read EVERY post there was on the Rumours, SN and LB forums. I had a lot to catch up on, because I'd not been really into music for many years, and this place was just great.
However, I think reading through all those posts did intimidate me for a while. Some Ledgies were/can be very judgemental about SN fans, and the last thing I can be bothered with is arguing with someone whose mind is closed.
There are also a few absolutely terrific writers on here, though, and their posts encouraged me to think that there might be the chance, as David says, of a conversation. And that is what I value most, because when my husband married me I forgot to warn him that I might fall back in love with FM and become a giant, y'know, bore.
Long live the Ledge, and hello to all newbies. :wavey::wavey:

ah, I might as well join in, too.
I lurked for quite a while, then joined and posted once.
I do enjoy just reading the threads and posts on here. There are so many different opinions, which is great.
anyway, I'm harry. I'm 16 and I'm from ballarat, australia
I agree. Plus I tend to be too lazy to sign in if I know I will only be on for a minute or two

Finally, I lurked until I felt like there was a topic I wanted to reply to. I didn't want to post just for the sake of it.
Word. I'll come forward. I've been lurking happily until yesterday when I finally felt like I had something worth saying.... (hopefully!).
Anyhow my name is Sadie, I'm 27, I used to post on the AOL Stevie boards as Rumours48 back in the days when people had AOL, like 1997-2001ish. I used to check out the old RMASN and AMFM boards but they were terrifying, all the catty bs that went on! It makes a person wary about message boards...
Also, it's really overwhelming to come back to the online community since the advent of widespread digital technology. When I was last around, there was no youtube or mediafire or facebook - people were still trading 2-for-1 tapes, CDs, and VHS. I'm kind of overwhelmed at the high-volume and -intensity digital trading that goes on now! It's awesome, but different. I've been watching and observing the social rules of what people offer and how - I don't want to commit any faux pas. Still getting the feel of Stevieland in the 21st century!

That's the one! I couldn't remember his name, but me and him just didn't click or maybe it was because I was 19,20 years old and didn't quite get his "style". But he did make some people feel like they were silly for being a chiffon head and would just be a real smart ass overall. But yes things are much more kosher around here these days.

Back in very early 2000, I found The Penguin. I'm not even sure if a forum section existed yet. I was not online very often at the time. Many years later (September 2009) we finally bought our own computer! I looked up The Penguin board, not even knowing if it still existed. I joined The Ledge right away! In fact, joining The Ledge was my birthday present to myself that year!:woohoo:

Well, I finally decided to "come in, out of the darkness"... (bet you didn't see that one coming a mile away!)
I'm a longtime Ledge lurker. I discovered this board when I got into the Mac back in 2003 after the release of Say You Will. I check it pretty much every day, and I love the insightful things you folks post. I would not know half as much about Fleetwood Mac (in all its various incarnations) and Stevie if it weren't for this board! All the hype for In Your Dreams has me pumped...as evidenced by my username. ;) I've seen Ms. Nicks solo twice (Two Voices and Crystal Visions) and the Mac once (Unleashed).
In my offline life, I'm a middle school Social Studies teacher. Huge music lover. Nerd. Everything else I suppose you'll find out in time...

I joined around the time of SYW. I didn't like the climate here really. So, I ignored the Ledge for several years.
And now you own it! :)
I joined in 2003, and this place was a hell of a lot of fun for about the first two years. But yes, things did get really toxic after that for a while. I left, and I dunno exactly how long I was gone for (seems like a year or two), but things got better, so here I am again. No, it's not as rowdy and over-the-top as it used to be, but I'm okay with that. There are lots of new regulars (but still a few pleasantly familiar usernames :) ) and things have really mellowed out - it's much more focused on FM than it was for a while there, which is a good thing.
And yes, dissention is missed very much. I kept up with him on LiveJournal for awhile, then he disappeared from that; he started posting again about a year or so ago, but I think he's gone MIA again. He claims that he forgot his password, and that's why he doesn't post here anymore, but frankly I think that's BS.

All right!! Another Rock A Little fan! :blob1: I find myself listening to RAL almost every day anymore. It's just the perfect pop rock album, and it really takes me back to being a kid in the '80s :). Not to mention Stevie's hot mess performances from the RAL tour are the stuff of legend. Glad you decided to join us, Jeremy! :wavey:

Hi everyone -
Thought I too would just officially "register" myself here! I posted a couple of times a while back but often just read.. I'm Luke, 22, another Stevie-starved UK fan who for better or worse has never given up on her! And I guess it looks like it's paid off since she's coming to my hometown this summer at long last : ) Glad to know there are other people who share the joy/frustration of being a Stevie fan!

Yeah, I've learned the hard way that NOTHING with Stevie comes easy or fast, so you just have to sit back & be patient. That's why I'm glad I have so many other artists I can fall back on while she's taking 10 years between albums. ;)

Truth be told, the battle between joy and frustration is probably what has kept my attention after all these years. Stevie is definitely an interesting character to follow because of that. Glad you decided to say hello, Luke! :wavey:

I did however bump the Facebook and Twitter one up if you want to share any of that info. Anyway, hello! :wavey:

I frankly didn't have the time or patience to deal with it, so I dropped into obscurity & decided when I joined this board that it'd be less of a headache to simply lurk & avoid any B.S. ;)
There have been times I considered leaving the Ledge because some people were very mean to me but I'm glad I stuck around. I now have many friends here and that feels very special.
So tell me, who is the hottie in your avatar?

I've been an active member for the past 2 years now and have loved my time on here! I feel I've made a few friends, who I still have to meet when I'm next in the US, and one who I have met and keep in touch with regularly (we're going to the Emmylou Harris gig latyer this year).
I lurked for a couple of months in early 2009 when there were rumours of the tour that became Unleashed because I knew tyhat dates/presales etc would hit here first. Then I just joined because the board looked so much fun!! Then I ended up being first to post UK dates (smug! Haha!)

I'm a lurker as well. Finally took the plunge and joined. My real name is Kendel (Elle) for short, and I live in Nashville.
My Stevie story is that my mom loved Fleetwood Mac growing up. She bought The Dance cd when it came out and played it in the car on the way home. It was actually the first cd any of us had bought at that point. Our car was new so playing a cd in it was a big deal. As it was playing, I was instantly mesmerized. At this point in my life I was solely obsessed with Reba so I kind of forgot about it, but would still come back to it from time to time because I put it on my ipod when I got one.
Towards the end of high school, I woke up and started obsessing over people like Pat Benatar, Cher, and Meat Loaf. In college, I really woke up when a lot of the songs kept coming on in itunes one day. It took me a little bit to realize that all the FM songs I loved were the ones Stevie was singing. I'm now a super fan and decided to come out of lurking with all the new album excitement!
Whew sorry for the novel! Hello all! :wavey:

Ok I posted for the first time yesterday in the Cheaper than Free thread so I'll sorta introduce myself in this one.
I'm from Texas, still here as of now but when I was in NYC I did attend a few NOTS shows (always had a blast)
I LOVE this forum!!!!!!!!!
Been lurking since 2005 when my love of Stevie and FM was once again at a peak (last time being The Dance era)
I first got addicted to FM when The Dance came out. I knew their songs growing up but never knew who sang them so when they reunited in 1997 it was like an awakening for me.
Everybody here has been cracking me up with their twisted sense of humor! That's why I lurked for so long. Reading the forum is far more entertaining than watching TV.
Take care!
