View Full Version : Is it time to retire the "Edge walk"?

It seems that there arent going to be any Edge walks on the heart and soul tour. I know all of us are dissapointed and it seems the reason is that there is a seperation from the front row to the stage so it cant happen. But maybe also Stevie at 62 just can't do it anymore. She's basically bent over in a tough position for 3 or so minutes and thats not easy on a person her age. I guess when she goes out on her own we'el find out for sure one way or the other. The one good thing she has going for her is being as short as she is it's not quite as hard on the back as it would be for someone of Mick's height. Thoughts?

I don't think she'll ever give up the Edge walk. She'll be doing it in a wheelchair eventually! She just can't do it this tour because of Rod's stage design :).

I too think it's because of the current stage design. I would think she'll bring it back on her own tour.

Agreed. The Edge walk BETTER not stop. I've had some great Stevie moments during it.

I was just thinking about this.... The thing is, if she had really
wanted to she could have just gone down the steps with her
security and walked over to the front row (where there's a
barrier) but - I think maybe what it boils down to is the logistics
involved in providing security for her - Being on the stage gives her
(and Mr. Bench-Presses 300 pounds ;) ) the classic "height advantage" -
which if you think about it really is considerable. That's gone - absent -
not there - when she's literally on the same level physically with the
audience. Add to that the extra time taken up to get there, and the time
and distance it would take to get her outta there if some nutbar went loopy,
and I would imagine it very quickly became time to say "AH screw it - NEXT tour!"

It won't be any great tragedy if she ceased doing the edge walk. Yes, it's one of her rituals, but at her age, you really can't expect her to be the same person she was in her early thirties. That said, I got to shake her hand during her walk at a Trouble in Shangrila tour. (It was the only time I had a first row seat at any big show...and I've gone hundreds of shows since 1978.)

She looks so youthful and hot in the recent concert clips, particularly in those skintight pants. And whoever thought you ever see Stevie in pants at this stage in her life! She has really trimmed down, and looks like she's in the best shape in years.

There is a part of me that says I'd rather have her stop doing it and be able to perform longer rather than risk serious injury. But as long as she and her people are comfortable with her continuing to do it, I see no reason for her to stop.

Something just occurred to me - kinda had a "DUUHHH!" moment there -
The orchestra seats, at least at Madison Square Garden, are at best glorified
folding chairs. Which presumably means that they can be placed anywhere.
So unless there's some sort of policy or regulation regarding where they place
them, that would of course pretty much eliminate the theory about this being
due to the design of Rod Stewart's stage, or any security concern based on Stevie
being higher than the crowd - they could have simply moved the chairs closer to
the stage. So i.m.o. there's "something else going on," I'm not so sure it's because
of the design of Rod Stewart's stage.

I feel for Stevie. She has complained about her back hurting, & I get the same pain every time I do self check-out at the supermarket. Then agin, if I got her paycheck, I might not complain. :)
Much as I liked the times I got to grasp hands with her, & though I hope others get the same chance, I can't stand the shove match that the Edge Walk can turn into for the fans. I've seen it get really ugly in places (especially when the people doing the shoving are drunk and loud), & the temperature can get stiflingly hot for a few minutes as well. Last time I saw her in concert a stranger behind me failed to shove me aside & then jumped up on my shoulders. I'm still proud of myself for keeping my cool.
As everybody knows, the Edge Walk just isn't the same with those gloves anyway.

I love the Edge walk but the last couple of years Stevie seems to be concerned about the mad rush of fans. At the Taj she was very upset when fans were being shoved when trying to get to the stage before the Edge began. And haven't you noticed how the number of rows allowed up there has decreased? It used to be a free for all, then it was the first five rows, then the first three rows, and recently it's been just for the first row. I think that's Stevie's request. As she got older she became more cautious, which we old people tend to do. lol And at her age, your right about the back issue. I don't know how she can bend forward like that without getting an injury, not to mention a head rush!
If she didn't have it anymore, maybe I could relax during the show instead of studying the layout and planning my mad dash. lol

She seems to abandon it when the stage isn't close enough. At her solo show in biloxi I was in the front row and she said "I can reach, so we'll just pretend"

I agree that I can relax and enjoy the show more when I am not in the running for the edge walk. But still, I want it LOL

Okay, I'm coming out of the woodwork right now.

This is the heart and soul tour. It is the Stevie / Rod Stewart show. It is in no way, the Stevie Nicks solo tour that we are used to.

I am sure that there are things Rod does in his solo shows that he is not doing due to the fact that he is sharing the stage with Stevie. The whole gimmick is there's two great legends on stage, right?

Being said, I firmly believe that once Stevie gets on her solo tour for In Your Dreams, we will see a change of setlist and the edge walk.

Think about it, if you had to share a stage with someone, would you really change up your setlist for an audience that only half of are probably there to see you? Or do the edge walk, that probably even less than half know what that is?

I think she'll definately continue to do it, but this Heart and Soul tour is a completely different avenue than the average Stevie show. Not everyone in the audience is there to see her. They don't know her back catalog nor her traditions for concert.

SO. In conclusion, I am willing to bet that we get out great ole' Stevie back during In Your Dream tour. Because I think for the Rod Stewart tour they're trying to market her as her radio image, playing that known songs, etc.

I agree, I think she loves it. Maybe the excitement or the adrenaline makes her back pain go away during the Edge walk?

What seriously concerns me is the "Standback kick" she does. I've seen her kick REALLY high, and it makes me cringe thinking she may fall. Anyone else feel this way? I know she had years of extensive ballerina training...lol...but at her age, a fall could do some damage!

I agree with all of the above.

The only thing I'd add is that even if Stevie DID manage to do the Edge walk during this H & S Tour, Rod's fans would be like, Why isn't Rod doing that?

I only like the Edge Walk if Stevie is collecting bunches of flowers & stuffed critters. Just plodding along, touching hands & saying, "I love you," is super-dorky -- & boring for the rest of the crowd (because they have to listen to the tag-out of the song for what seems like forever).

Either retire the Edge Walk or retire the huge audiences & sports arenas. Retire Barack Obama. Retire Al Pacino.

I hope not!!:( I'm 60 and still waiting to be able to afford a ticket in one of the rows so that I can shake her hand one day (It's on my bucket list ;) )

Any way, I can't wait to see her Wednesday in Boston!:blob2:

The main reason she isn't doing it this tour is the stage set up. She can't. And the fact that her setlist has been shortened because she is an opening act. I'm not buying the line that Stevie is 62 and she just can't do it anymore. If she can tour like she does, she can do a simple walk for 5 minutes across the stage. It's a chance for Stevie and her fans to make a physical connection, something very special to both. The Edge walk will never stop as long as Stevie is touring solo.

Stevie didn't do the Edge walk when she was touring with Don Henley either. She only walked to the edge of the stage and did a slow wave and a big smile...three times..one on the left, one in the center and one on the right.

I wonder whether Stevie antibacterializes her hands after the Edge Walk -- or does she want to come down with the flu, as Rod did?

Agreed with you and Louie. There was NOTHING as magical as getting to shake her hand during the "Edge" walk on my birthday one year.

I like the tag and I like her return to her mic after the extended stretch. There's something exciting about the resumption and return of energy after the lull, throwing you back into the thrill of the opening notes. Yes, I still know what it sounds like.

A career of pasts, presents and separations tumbling around me.

Edge Walk itself with fans pushing, standing, running and sniveling is not fun for me. In fact, I hate audiences in general. So, cutting out her interaction with frenzied fans is always something I would favor.

All those germs . . . can you imagine the super-bugs? Viruses, drug-resistant bacteria, etc.

Seriously, when Stevie wears the gloves, it really makes me laugh, because she touches fans with the gloves, but then she goes over and rubs them all over Sharon, Lori and (the erstwhile) Jana. I know they're on her payroll, but "Please after your gloves have been soaking up body secretions from the masses, don't put them on my skin. Thank you."

I really hope this is just a Heart and Soul thing. The Edge walk is what I look forward to most during her shows.

why is it called the edge walk ?

Because during "Edge of Seventeen," she walks along the front of the stage shaking hands with the fans in the first few rows who have rushed to the stage.

I feel fairly confident that it's just a logistical thing with this particular tour. She's not going to retire the Edge walk, it's not happening people so don't get your panties in a wod. Plus, I'm in the first row for the Indio show and if she was going to retire it she'd wait till after that show...:wavey:

That's in the can at present too. At least, I didn't catch one.
She did a mild kick later on, but nothing like what we've seen
in recent years.
Hate to say it but I think that's wise - she does NOT need an injury right now!

Don't forget, she's wearing The Boots all the way through now -
Harder for her to keep her balance in those during a high-kick, of course.

I agree with what Cristochango is saying about things being different since this is a combined Stevie/Rod Stewart tour; and that half the audience is Rod S. fans.
(Frankly, at MSG it was more than half - there were several signs of that.)

One other thing I'd like to point out though - I can KINDA see the sore back
thing being an issue but don't forget this is someone who "by definition" says
"So WHAT!?" to something like that. ;)

Can you imagine all the times she's gone on-stage with a splitting headache, for example?

Oh by the way though - I've also seen some speculation that there's a time issue as well -
Don't forget there's a curfew, if they don't finish by 10:30 or so the venue is hit with a big
fine - and guess who ends up paying that? Yeah. Then Stevie and Rod might have a big
spat over whose fault it is, the peace of the tour is disrupted, etc. etc. -
I have a general impression this is a "multiple reasons" kind of thing - Stevie got to a
certain point where she was like, "You know WHAT? SCREW it! Let's can the Edge Walk
and we'll just pick it up again this summer." (Or something along those lines.)
