View Full Version : Meet Stevie on Oprah

So last fall I sent in a letter saying that Stevie Nicks should be on the show
Dear Oprah
In all the years of having interviewed many singers and songwriters there is one person you have never interviewed and that is Stevie Nicks. I am one of the biggest fans of Stevie Nicks and have always wanted to meet her in person. I think her story is very interesting and she has such an amazing voice. I became a fan when my father was talking about a band that had a female singer and how he liked them. I didn't know who he was talking about until I started going through their LP collection and found the Rumours album. That was the start of a lifelong obsession with everything related to Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. I have travelled to NYC and Philadelphia to attend shows when she hasn't come to Canada which is where I live. Why I enjoy her music so much is that she has written most of her songs herself and she has this very unique voice that really pulls you in. Her stage presence always feels so magical and mysterious at the same time. My favorite songs of hers are Landslide and Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You. I would love to have the chance to hear her sing live on Oprah. That would be the dream of a lifetime. In my opinion she is the queen of Rock and Roll. She has a new CD coming out in the spring so it would be perfect timing to have her on your show.
Thank you very much
Matt Denison
I was at work this evening and I got this email from a producer at Harpo that stated that they want more information on my story including a recent photo and a contact number. The email looks very legit so I think it is on the up and up.
I can't believe this is happening. This is beyond amazing. I don't know what this all about in terms of me being on the show or just being in the audience. I will keep you posted as to what happens

I got a similar message this afternoon! I wrote a letter several weeks ago after reading a thread on this forum about it. Of course I wrote back ecstatically. Nobody has to twist my arm to get me to talk about one of my favorite subjects ever.
After years of perusing here, this is my first post. So I just wanted to chime in and say good luck to everyone involved in getting Stevie on the show. I think it's finally going to happen.

I'm not American, and know very little of Oprah, so forgive me if I sound ignorant, but, Stevie going on her show is like, a huge deal right? It's so cool that they emailed you about Stevie, though!

I hope something really great comes of this. Specifically, if Stevie is in fact invited & goes on the show, that Stevie, and particularly Oprah & her producers, pull out all the stops that someone of Stevie's legacy deserves.

Oprah is the equivalent of the top of the mountain here in the US. The fact Stevie has been in show business for 40 years and hasn't been on Oprah says it all. Oprah is probably the single most influential woman in the US... her influence is widely credited/blamed for getting Barack Obama in the White House. Fame alone won't get you on her show... you have to be a dynamic game changer. Somebody who has piqued her interest. Someone who has sent ripples of change throughout the world. If Stevie were to get a spot on her show, it'd definitely be a real coup for Stevie and her fans :).

It is on her website where I saw the add asking for suggestions for guests. As I recall there was a link to key in your info and type a brief letter. I don't know if it is still ongoing or not but when I sent the letter I never thought that anything like this would happen.

Any publicity that fans can generate is a worthwhile endeavor. Of course, we'd all love to see a Oprah conduct a substantial interview with Stevie, but even a segment regarding her fanbase will still be seen by 6 million viewers. It's the #5 syndicated show in the U.S.
Fingers crossed for Oprah, and performances on American Idol (average aud. 24 million ), Dancing with the Stars (average aud. 22 million), etc.

Oprah is massively influential. I think every book she has featured in her "book club" has become an instant bestseller. There is a segment of the population that literally hangs on every word she says.

That's my fear as well. Though, it can be somewhat charming, but we all saw how that VH1 fan show turned out in 2001.;)
I would really just love 4 Stevie to be featured - in all her glory, and having an in depth, terrific and *revealing* interview with Oprah, perhaps sharing something she has never shared before. And equally prominent, have Oprah celebrate & acknowledge Stevie's legend and legacy going into her 5th decade in the music inductry. Top it off with 2 performance's by Stevie, something classic, and something new - celebrating the return of Stevie and her career masterpiece of a new album.:p
But if it is a fan related show, I genuinely hope the fans bring it! Bring some terrific and heartfelt stories, and a strong demographic diversity of fans is represented.

Big time. I - and all of you - have been so looking forward to 2011 as the Year Of Stevie. I'm thrilled for everyone that's going to see she and Rod, but I hate the fact that so much of the lead-up to IYD has been eclipsed by the Heart and Soul Tour. She deserves her own platform - and an all-out media blitz. You couldn't get away from Stevie if you bloody tried in 2001 - Blockbuster Music Awards before the release, Rosie, countless media appearances. She did a huge media stop in Toronto where I lived for the release, and one of my favourite things to come out of that was an hour-long interview that aired on Much More Music (Canada's equivalent to VH1) called Speak Easy. Try to get ahold of that if you can, my American friends. But anyhow - this Heart and Soul tour is smart publicity for the album, sure - but you have no wonder where she'd be right now if she wasn't touring with Rod. I doubt she'd be reclusive. She'd be out there in the media doing more interviews and appearances, and maybe things wouldn't even be so tight-lipped. But here it is Tuesday again, and so far - squat! Throw us a frickin' bone...

I work for the Gap in DALLAS. Back in 1998, we had just discontinued the scent product called Grass in May 1998. In September 1998, Oprah said that Grass was her favourite scent from GAP and gave everyone gift baskets! Well, the company pumped that stuff back into production because of the INSANE demands for Grass because of Oprah!!!!!!

Totally not Stevie related...but I just sprayed Grass all over me on the way to work. I had no idea about the Oprah/grass thing. Not sure how popular the stuff is now though, I bought a small bottle of it for 97 cent the other day! It's my favorite Gap scent, but it's no Fracas. Ha ha.

Just submitted my "essay". O M G that was like hell, trying to keep it under 2000 characters! The Ledge seems kinda quiet with a lot of lurking. Is everyone off to the races, submitting their stories to Oprah? I really hope so. So that Oprah & her producers realize what a thing of beauty Stevie Nicks is! She is Rhiannon - a bright light, from a bright world - brought down to bring us hope and joy in our most difficult hours. Sorry, all this writing and contemplation of all thing Stevie to me, really almost burst my little ole chiffonhead .:p

This whole thing makes me wonder if Oprah is doing some sort of "meet your idols" kinda show, where Stevie would just be one of several stars in the episode. We all know how Oprah loves to dedicate shows to making people's dreams come true.

I suspect that the winner will be someone who has the most stuff- a Stevie shrine full of tchotchkes. Oprah will definitely dispatch a camera crew to the individual's home. I mean, anyone can come on and say, "I am the biggest Stevie fan because _____." But few people have the actual tangible evidence to back it up.

Yeah & that's sad. Just because someone has the most stuff doesn't make them the biggest fan etc. It might for some people, but yeah. Also, I do not have the money or resources to acquire such a collection so I hope this isn't the case. I sent in my story, because I feel it is a good one. I would not mind being on national television, it would be such a rush & my friends & family would go bonkers. I am praying my ass off, I might go down to the church & sit in a pew :\ Hahaha... joking... maybe,

LOL! I was going to say something like that too:
"Girlfriend, why do you talk about Lindsey Buckingham so much? 'Cuz you two broke up in like 1976, right? It was 1976? Or was there some hanky panky going on later?"
Yeah, Liz better get to work because Liza Minelli's people didn't stop Oprah from bringing up her last marriage even when Liza absolutely insisted she wouldn't talk about it.

Thanks guys for the encouragement for me to try for the Oprah thing but it didn't work out. I spent the last hour writing my letter in Word and when I tried to send it through the Oprah page not only was it more than twice the word limit but none of my pics were the right size so forget it. I'm taking that as a sign that it's not meant to be (plus my story cannot be compromised by shortening it). Someday she'll know and I wish all of you the best of luck! May the best fan win! lol

If you want Stevie to move forward and promote her new album, why the heck would you want her to rehash the past?
Everyone knows about. It's history that has been written about since 1977; it's in documentaries, it's been adressed in numerous interviews over decades. It reeks of tabliod explotation (which is the disgusting tone of today's info-tainment cluture).
Haven't we've already heard it all, over and over again? It's done! It's toast! With fans interested only in this ****, you start to realize why the band has stagnated under the pressure to perpetuate the past. The credible artists that are of Stevie's age today are not usually subject to this tedium.
No real depth to the pandering questions like "How did cocaine put a hole in your nose?"
Really? Is that a question that needs to be asked...or answered? So much for an insightful interview!
Although it wouldn't hurt, Stevie does not need Oprah. I hope she does interviews with more credible music-oriented/industry sources. And I hope questions are focused mostly on what she's doing currently, and not the ancient past.
How about questions about her solo career?
Her views on social media and how it plays into today's market?
The chemistry and influence her producers have on her music?
How Dave changed her set-in-her ways attitude about writing?
How she sees herself fitting in as an elder in a youth culture?
Her views on aging rock stars?
What songs on the new album are really important to her?
Her current interests outside of the music world?
Think outside the Lindsey/Drugs box! In a way, we put her in that box. I do understand how younger fans were not even born during the heydays, so all the stories are intriguing to you, but it's already been said, done and there to see and read. Do really want Stevie to just be a broken record? Unfortunately that is what has happened. This new album is a new breath of fresh air. The oft-told stories of the past are rankorously stale.
Having been a fan for nearly four decades, it's curious to see how the fan perspective has drastically changes with the advent of social media. Instead of just being focused on their music, now we are all focused on their marketing strategies! It's a weird ****ed-up world.

It's only a weird f'd up world if you see it that way. And that's fine. I don't feel that way, and that's fine.
In so many ways, Stevie has never let the past go, and isn't that what makes her so endearing to so many of us?
Some of us grew up with Stevie and yes, you are correct we all know the "stories" but to think Oprah wouldn't go for the sensational elements would be fooling yourself. I'm sure even Stevie knows she will always be asked about "Rumours" and always be asked about Lindsey, and in my opinion, she seems fine with it, enjoys it even, telling the same stories that we like to hear....even after all these years.
If everything has been "said and done" then why does this board even exist? It's ok, lighten up! Stevie is happy, and we are happy she is still with us, creating more music. What's stale to you may not be stale to us all.

I submitted an essay too, but more out of support for Stevie than a desire to end up on Oprah. I would be appalled, watching myself later, seeing myself so ridiculously fanatical on national TV. I would do it, though. :o I also hesitated on making my story too personal, knowing it could be broadcast for all to see.
I had to merge these threads, everyone. I hope they merged in a way that makes sense to new readers. Please, let's keep the Oprah conversations in one place. Thanks.

random thoughts...
Itunes killed the concept of albums and records stores, and irerrevocably changed the industry for the worst . Social media -- for all it's benefits -has a dark downside. Honoring the past is one thing. Pandering and living off of it is another thing. There is nothing endearing about stagnation. The board exists to celebrate and share critical analysis of our favorite artists!

It sounds like Oprah's producers are fishing. And some of the names tossed out there are so far-fetched. I mean, Tina Turner is a recluse living in Switzerland with nothing new to promote. Cher is no longer doing her Vegas show and has nothing new to promote. Cyndi Lauper released an album last year and has nothing new to promote. Sister Sledge? Really?
A couple of years ago Oprah did a special with Cher and Tina Turner together, each being infinitely more famous than Stevie. So I think having a solo Stevie episode would have been an impossible dream. I think an 80's theme show with Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Stevie and Pat Benatar is a likely scenario.

Exactly...I think it's a bit crazy to think that Stevie would get her own full-hour. If anything, maybe half of the show. But to feature her in a show on other women rockers, while a bit of a disappointment to the fans, makes more sense, I think.

Stevie might not be on that show. I bet it depends on the most heartfealt stories they get, and they don't have time to feature all those rockers.
By the way, Aretha Franklin did not get a full show either. I saw her on Oprah and she was only on there for like 10 minutes.

A few years ago there was an even weirder mix of singers- Mary J. Blige, Carly Simon and, I think, some female country singer that I can't remember. Each had a song and an interview segment. I can't remember the theme of the show. But there is always a common thread in there somewhere. The only time a celebrity gets a full hour is if they are unqualified A-list stars or if they are currently in the midst of a big controversy or about to make a big confession. She could have easily devoted a week of episodes to Whitney Houston!

This is what I thought originally, which immediately had me thinking Stevie & Rod might appear on the show together. Some sort of rock n roll retro show to also promote H&S before the Chicago April 9th Show. But ultimately, I've warmed a little to possibly see Stevie appear with the likes of Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry & Heart. But Sister Sledge!? Thats just freaky. I mean, I can even justify Donna Summer, but Sister Sledge!
Basically, if Stevie does appears on some future O show, it will be great exposure and good for In Your Dreams. And I suspect Stevie would be the featured *prized* guest out of all the names being thrown around by Oprah's producers for Rock Goddesses of the 70s and 80s.

I am sure they are doing a show about 70s and 80s rock goddesses. I think it's most likely just a tribute to 70/80s Female Rock Icons of some sort, highlighting the cult following they have etc, hence the fan submissions. Lol they definitely aren't going to disgrace her by marginalizing her to some one hit wonder has been, but I am sure thats how the episode will be structured. Neither Stevie nor Pat have released any new music sinve 2003, and tho many people regard both of them as legendary icons and know they are still around, most people have no clue what either has been up to over the past 8 years. I am not saying they are going to say, ROCK GODDESSES OF THE 70S AND 80S, WHERE ARE THEY NOW? what I am saying is they probably aren't going to do a show about fans or one completely geared toward Stevie. They are going to have a few "rock goddesses" and tell their story and bring them out and do an interview with them on their past and what they are doing now, just like the where are they now episodes.

I think Oprah's producers are going to be surprised at the "cult" of Stevie. I don't think they realize how loyal her fans are or how big her story is. She should definitely have 60 minutes to herself. Also, I can't see her doing a ladies of the 80"s thing.

The taping is on April 8th. I have a reservation for two to be in the audience. I wrote a paragraph on why I love the music of Stevie Nicks on nickslive.blogspot.com where they featured Oprah looking for the "Ultimate Stevie Nicks Fan". I also wrote a similar paragraph to be in the audience on Oprah's website. I'll be disappointed if Pat Benatar shows up instead of Stevie! Anyway I'm going to meet some friends from other parts of the country to have a girls weekend in Chicago. Should be fun!

That taping date is a good enough omen Stevie will be on the O show. :) April 8th is a day before the Heart & Soul tour stops in Chicago, and Stevie has that day off...on her way to Chicago in all likelihood April 7th, through April 9th.

Stevie performs in Chicago April 9th with Rod. Therefore, there is no reason she won't be on Oprah! I'd say you should snag up some tickets to the Rod/Stevie show on the 9th, but you may get some free ones at Oprah!

Being a fan of both Nicks and Benatar, I'd love to see them both on the show. Even a little exposure on Oprah is a lot of exposure, right?
It's the right age group for Stevie -- these are people who would never know she had a new album from the regular channels (like radio or MTV). It'll be huge for "In Your Dreams" to get a plug.
Benatar has a book to promote. Hers is a completely different story than Stevie's -- she was drug-free, got married to her guitarist, Neil Giraldo in 1982 and had two kids. I have to admit...it made for a bit of a dull book (it's more about her struggles with her sexist pig record company and her sweet romance with Giraldo than anything else).
I hope they're on stage together as I'd love to see them interact. They're both generous in spirit and they've been kind to one another in the press, so I am sure it would be a lovely exchange.

I got sucked in watching while on the elliptical at the gym. It was so ridiculous; Oprah was so full of s*&t saying how she was "rooting" for the Octo lady. Like she cares! I'm not a huge fan of Oprah, though I can see her appeal.

I definitely would not want to appear on the show, but I would love to be in the studio audience. Who knows what they could be putting in those goodie bags?

I will keep you posted as to what happens
well I hope it happens because I'm going to the April 8th taping of rock and roll fans and the rumour is from one of the producers that they are working on getting Stevie since she and Rod's show is the next night :)

To meet Stevie, or just to be in the audience. Are there two different things we're going after- I'm having a hard time understanding here!

I think it is two different things. One to be in the audience and one to be featured on the same show. I think a "superfan" will actually get to meet Stevie. Maybe it will be a surprise for the "superfan"? I don't know if filling out the "superfan" info gives you an advantage. I would think so. I'm thrilled to be in the audience. I have heard the audience is small and intimate. I couldn't find the link for the audience selection any more on Oprah's site. Anyone know if it's been taken down?
Good luck , I hope the audience is full of Ledgies!

I never read into it as a "contest" for her "#1 Fan", just that they were looking for fans in general. So I don't think anyone will be named her #1 Fan necessarily.
They were probably looking for a certain type of fan that fit in with what they want to do on this particular show.

My fear about Stevie appearing on Oprah is that we will hear the same old script that we've heard from her for the last ten years. Will she sing a new song, or will we get another performance of Stand Back? Will she address how and what she's doing now, and how she sees herself in today's world, the state of the music industry, or will it be a lot of pandering to her past?
Stevie is interesting and quirky, but she is not the most articulate and insightful person:sorry: Aside from featuring a bunch of gushing fans, I hope the dialouge will be on higher level--in the context of her longevity, her iconic persona, her unconventional lifestyle, her work and interests outside of the music industry (with various charities/military) etc...

Well it has been a week as of Monday that I was contatcted by Oprah's staff and I still haven't heard. I posted on her forum just asking about notification and their response was that you will hear back by phone or email if selected but they didn't specify how soon you should hear back.
This is all so very weird as they have not confirmed anything yet nor has anyone said they were picked to be a guest on the show.
I will keep hoping for a call. My friends think that they have to be serious about my letter if they asked for a photo and a contact numbe plus the publicity that my sister helped create. I still think that there had to be more then just me whom they contacted. I would love to go but if it doesn't happen oh well I still love Stevie's music and will hopefully see her solo this summer.

I was hesitant to post this, but I figure what the hell! I'll rock a little...
I wrote in an e-mail to the Oprah Show last Monday on a whim and I was contacted the next day (last Tuesday) by one of her producers. When I got that call saying "Hi, this is Allyson from the Oprah Show," I almost had a heart attack! I played it cool though, and we spent about 15 minutes talking about how Stevie has influenced my life, etc. She took all of my contact information and said that she would reach out to me again soon. I'm starting to get a liiiiiittle anxious, since it's been over a week since I heard anything.
Has anyone on here had a similar experience? I know Nicks_Fan received an e-mail. It would be fantastic to have the audience filled with Stevie fans.
